The ninth form of Goddess Durga, Maa Siddhidatri, is worshipped on the final day of Navratri. Revered as the bestower of supernatural powers and spiritual wisdom, she is associated with the colour orange and pink. Devotees believe that worshipping her while wearing this colour brings prosperity, abundance and inner strength.

Maa Durga’s devotees celebrate the ninth day of Navratri as Maha Navami, which is one of the most important days of the auspicious festival of Navratri. This year, Navami falls on October 1. Bengalis celebrate Navami on the fourth day of Durga Puja.

Date and Time for Navmi:

Navami Tithi Begins – September 30, 2025 – 06:06 PM

Navami Tithi Ends – October 1, 2025 – 07:01 PM

Significance

Maha Navami celebrates the triumph of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. Across the nine days of Navratri, devotees worship the nine forms of Durga, known as Navdurga. On the ninth day, prayers are dedicated to Maa Siddhidatri.

Who is Maa Siddhidatri?

Maa Siddhidatri, the ninth form of Durga, is worshipped on the final day of Navratri. According to Hindu mythology, when the universe was created, Lord Rudra invoked Adi-Parashakti, the supreme Goddess of Power, who had no form at the time. She then manifested as Siddhidatri from the left half of Lord Shiva, leading to his form as Ardha-Narishwar.

Maa Siddhidatri governs planet Ketu, providing it with energy and direction. She is regarded as the Goddess who possesses and grants all Siddhis (spiritual powers or accomplishments) to her devotees. These include the eight Siddhis: Anima, Mahima, Prapti, Prakamya, Garima, Laghima, Ishitva and Vashitva. It is believed that even Lord Shiva attained all his Siddhis through her blessings.

She is also revered as the remover of ignorance, bestowing wisdom and clarity upon her devotees. Depicted seated on a lotus and riding a lion, Maa Siddhidatri holds a mace and Sudarshan chakra in her right hands, and a lotus and shankh in her left. She is worshipped by Gandharvas, Yakshas, Siddhas and even Asuras, who gather around her divine presence.

Rituals to perform

Devotees should wake up early on Navami tithi and begin the day with a mahasnan. They should wear new and clean clothes, and bathe the idol of Maa Durga and Maa Siddhidatri with Gangajal. Offer her white garments, bathe her and offer sweets, dry fruits, fruits and white flowers.

Maa Siddhidatri likes Night Blooming Jasmine (Raat Ki Rani) and is said to be fond of seasonal fruits, pudi, kheer, chana, coconut and halwa hence, one should offer these items as bhog to please her. Apart from praying to Maa Siddhidatri, devotees should also perform Kanya Pujan/Kanjak on Navami as it holds much significance on Namai tithi.

Navratri 2025: 5 sweat-proof, long-lasting makeup tips for garba nights and pandal hopping

Enjoy Navratri nights to the fullest without worrying about your makeup. These tips ensure it stays put through hours of sweat and dancing.

Navratri 2025: The nine days of Navratri see a lot of high-energy activity, whether it is dancing for long hours at garba nights or hopping from one pandal to another. While you glam up for the anticipated night, the sweaty humidity may make your makeup melt. But with the right makeup products and application tricks, the glam festive look stays intact.

Don’t let melting makeup get in the way of your festive fun.(Pexel)

Monika Khullar, makeup artist and head trainer atAnastasia Beverly Hills, shared with us these 5 easy makeup tips, from base to setting:

1. Start with the right base

  • Prepping your skin is as important as the makeup itself. Cleanse and hydrate well, then use a mattifying primer to control excess oil.
  • A lightweight, long-wear foundation or a foundation tinted works best; heavy layers only increase the chances of smudging.

2. Choose transfer-proof formulas

Make sure you choose smudge-proof products. (Shutterstock)

  • Opt for waterproof and smudge-proof products wherever possible. A long-wear base, concealer, blush, and cream-to-powder formulas hold up better under sweat.
  • Powder the T-zone lightly with a setting powder to keep shine under control without making the skin look cakey.

3. Eye makeup that lasts

Apply eye primer to ensure the makeup stays the entire night!(Adobe Stock)

  • For eye looks, an eye primer ensures colours pop and stay put. Gel or liquid liners are more resistant to smudging than pencils.
  • Waterproof mascara is a must, especially if you’ll be dancing for hours.
  • If you’re adding shimmer, press it onto the lid with your finger for maximum grip.

4. Lock in brows and lips

  • Well-defined brows frame the face, but sweat can make them fade quickly.
  • Use a brow gel to keep them in place. For lips, go for long-wear matte liquid lipsticks; they last longer than creamy formulas and won’t transfer easily.

5. Set and refresh

  • As a final step, set your makeup with a matte setting spray with a hydrating formula. This way, your makeup is well set and lasts longer.
  • Keep some quick-fix essentials handy in your bag for touch-ups, a powder puff with mini loose powder or blotting papers or mini setting spray, lip cheek tints, they’ll help control excess shine and absorb sweat without disturbing your look.

Your Navratri nights can become worry-free, especially from the requirement of frequent touch-ups if you choose the right makeup products and follow the right techniques.

Feeling lonely this Navratri? Therapist shares 6 tips to navigate through loneliness this festive season

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

The festive season is a time of joy, celebration, and the warmth of togetherness. However, it may not be a great time for everyone, especially those living far away or cut off from family and friends. Many people experience disappointment and despair during the holidays due to family conflicts, the death of a loved one, and other pressures, which exacerbates the all too prevalent feeling of seasonal loneliness – but rest assured, you are not alone.

The festive season can be difficult for some people.(Pexel)

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Mansi Poddar – a trauma-informed psychotherapist and mental health expert with over 15 years of experience – stresses that the holiday season can be an exceptionally difficult time for some people, which is a completely normal human response to loneliness. She outlines six therapist-approved tips to help cope with festive loneliness, making the season a little easier for those who find it challenging to navigate through the holidays.

1. Acknowledge your emotions

According to Dr Poddar, “Festive loneliness is more prevalent than most people realise. Recognise your feelings rather than ignoring them. By giving your emotions a name, you can lessen their intensity and keep them from turning into self-blame.”

2. Practice mindfulness

According to the therapist, some research indicates that practising mindfulness might help reduce feelings of loneliness. Even if you are only using mindfulness apps and practicing it only for a period of time every day, it makes a difference.

3. Keep a simple routine

Dr Poddar recommends making a to-do list of things you can do, be it daily activities or something special, over the holidays – it helps keep your schedule as well as your mind organised.

She elaborates, “Give yourself permission to let go of everything you are unable to do over the holidays due to emotional, mental, or physical limitations. Try making a menu of things you can do, broken down into high and low-energy activities, if you have trouble sticking to a schedule. It’s crucial that you determine what activities are truly engaging rather than merely something you ‘should’ do.”

It is important to be kind to yourself during the festive season.(Pexel)

4. Treat yourself with compassion

“Imagine a loved one approaching you to share their feelings of loneliness over the holidays. You would most likely listen to their worries, treat them with the utmost kindness, and tell them that you care about and love them,” says Dr Poddar, adding the question, “So why not do the same to yourself?”

She suggests treating yourself the way you would treat someone you love – be gentle with yourself, practice kindness and compassion, believe in yourself, and care for yourself just as you would for a friend.

5. Practice gratitude

“An excellent place to start is with a gratitude diary. Writing down all of your blessings, from the more philosophical to the more mundane, could be a good place to start,” suggests the mental health expert.

Practising gratitude and counting your blessings can help you see the good in people, point out the things you are blessed with, which helps you appreciate what you have – directing your attention to life’s good aspects and eventually, aiding your recovery.

6. Engage with communities

The festive season is a time of celebration and togetherness, so it is only natural to feel lonely. Dr Poddar emphasises that it is a common human sensation and should not be viewed as a personal weakness. “Even if the holidays don’t look like traditional festivities, you may make them a time of healing and purpose by establishing deliberate connections, rituals, and self-care routines,” she highlights.

“The impacts of social isolation can be countered even by conversing with complete strangers. Attend local gatherings like concerts, sporting events, or open-mic nights where you may meet others who share your interests. Become a member of a book club. Make use of social media to broaden your network and get in touch with former acquaintances. Engage in forums and social media groups related to your interests.”

Nutritionist reveals 5 common Navratri fasting mistakes: ‘Too much sabudana…’

by jummy84 September 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Many devotees fast during Navratri, abstaining from different food groups. These commonly include flours, grains like wheat and rice, legumes, lentils, and non-vegetable foods. Instead, certain foods, like sabudana and potatoes, are permitted in the vrat diet. But while vrat is for spiritual devotion, it’s also important to ensure your vrat diet is healthy.

Often, vrat meals include potatoes and sabudana, both of which are high in carbs.

ALSO READ: Planning to fast this Navratri? Doctor shares 5 tips for people with diabetes and hypertension

Nutritionist Kiran Kukreja shared in a September 21 post some common mistakes people may make during the Navratri diet.

1. Too much sabudana

Sabudana is a common ingredient seen in vrat dishes. There are many, from the comfort vrat sabudana khichdi to sabudana dosa, chilla, and more, making this ingredient very versatile. But nutritionist Kiran warned against going overboard with sabudana, saying, “It is mostly starch, which can spike sugar and leave you tired quickly.”

2. Skipping protein balance

Since primarily non-veg, lentils, and legumes are not consumed, there’s a shortage of adequate protein intake. Kiran urged being mindful of this habit because most vrat recipes are carb and fat-heavy, which, according to her, makes “you feel drained quickly.”

3. Thinking vrat chips and namkeens are safe

You will find many snacks labelled Navratri vrat-safe, but it’s vital to stay within limits and not give them a free pass just because they are Navratri-safe.

She shared the reason: “Most packaged vrat snacks are fried in poor quality oils, which defeats the purpose of fasting.”

4. Avoid using potatoes for every meal

Potato is often relied upon heavily as it is permitted during fasting and is one of the most versatile vegetables that can go with everything, from sabudana khichdi to aloo tikki and aloo chips. But making potato the base has the potential to backfire. Why? Kiran explained that vrat recipes are loaded with starch and can cause blood sugar to spike.

5. Not rotating ingredients

The last vrat mistake that the nutritionist pointed out was not rotating ingredients. Because of the limited permissible foods during the fast, one may often eat the same dishes, which can cause nutritional gaps. She added, “Eating the same kuttu cheela or samak rice pulao every day can leave nutrient gaps and trigger more cravings.”
