Doctor reveals regular plant protein intake can lower blood pressure naturally; shares 6 dietary changes for high BP

High blood pressure is one of the most common cardiovascular concerns in the country – often fuelled by poor dietary choices, high salt intake, and sedentary lifestyles. While medication is sometimes necessary, many cases can be managed through simple, sustainable changes in daily habits. Small shifts in diet, such as incorporating heart-healthy foods and reducing processed ingredients, can help lower blood pressure naturally and support long-term cardiovascular health.

Dr Kunal Sood, an anaesthesiologist and interventional pain medicine physician, shares six simple dietary habits that can naturally lower blood pressure and boost heart health.

In an Instagram video posted on October 9, the physician notes, “Each of these foods or habits supports vascular health in a different way. Together, they form a strong foundation for non-drug blood pressure control.”

Limit salt

According to Dr Sood, excess sodium makes the body retain more water, which raises blood volume and arterial pressure. He explains, “Lowering sodium can reduce systolic BP by six to seven mmHg on average. Aim for less than or equal to 2,300 mg per day (approximately one teaspoon of salt), or 1,500 mg per day if hypertensive. Use fresh foods and herbs instead of packaged salt mixes.”

Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines play a vital role in supporting heart and overall cardiovascular health. Dr Sood highlights, “EPA and DHA from fish improve endothelial function and reduce vascular resistance. A two to three gram daily intake can lower systolic BP by approximately two to three mmHg.”

Legumes and plant proteins

According to the physician, plant proteins from legumes like beans, lentils, and chickpeas are loaded with potassium, magnesium, and fibre. He explains, “They may help blood vessels relax and reduce ACE activity. Regular intake (about half to one cup, three to five times weekly) is linked with modest BP drops of approximately one mmHg and better control overall.”

Nitrate-rich veggies

Dr Sood notes that vegetables like beetroot, spinach, and arugula are rich in nitric oxide, which promotes vasodilation. He elaborates, “A portion daily (approximately 80 grams spinach or 100 to 200 mL beetroot juice) can lower systolic BP by about five mmHg in hypertensive adults.”

Nuts

According to the physician, nuts like walnuts, pistachios, and almonds supply the body with magnesium, arginine, and unsaturated fats that improve vessel flexibility. He adds, “Pistachios show the greatest effect, lowering systolic BP by approximately two mmHg. Use unsalted nuts a few times per week.”

Fermented dairy

Dr Sood explains, “Yoghurt and kefir may produce ACE-inhibiting peptides that aid vasodilation. Some studies show approximately five mmHg systolic reduction after eight weeks, though effects vary. Choose plain, low-sugar, live-culture versions several times weekly.”

Physiologist shares 3 strategies to naturally lower blood sugar levels quickly: ‘Drinking at least 2 glasses helps…’

Sudden spikes in blood sugar can be concerning, but the good news is there are natural ways to bring those levels down quickly. Small, everyday habits – whether it’s how you move, hydrate, or eat – can make a powerful difference in stabilising glucose and supporting better overall health.

According to Jose, eating veggies before meals can prevent blood sugar spikes.(Unsplash)

Jose Tejero, a ‘dietitian and exercise physiologist’ specialising in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, is sharing three effective strategies to help naturally bring down blood sugar levels quickly. In an Instagram video posted on September 17, the physiologist breaks down his blood sugar lowering strategies, explaining the science behind them and emphasising how simple daily actions can create a big impact.

Walks + squats

Jose recommends going for a 20 minute walk followed by 20 body squats. He explains, “The reason why this works is because muscle contractions increase the rate at which glucose is transported from the bloodstream and into the cell to be used as energy.” The physiologist further elaborates, “When muscles contract, they trigger contraction-stimulated glucose uptake – meaning your cells pull glucose from your blood even without insulin. This makes your muscles act like “glucose vacuums,” lowering blood sugar fast.”

Drink water

While drinking water, in itself, does not lower blood sugar levels, dehydration leads to higher blood sugar concentration, according to Jose. He explains, “While water doesn’t directly lower glucose, dehydration concentrates the sugar already in your bloodstream, making values higher. Drinking at least 2 glasses helps your kidneys filter excess glucose and reduces overall blood sugar concentration.”

Eat non-starchy veggies before meals

Jose recommends eating at least two cups of non-starchy vegetables, like broccoli, spinach, or zucchini, before your meals – it adds more fibre in your diet and slows down gastric emptying. He explains, “This means glucose from carbs enters your blood more gradually, reducing spikes and improving insulin response. Studies show sequencing meals this way can significantly blunt post-meal glucose elevations.”

Plastic surgeon shares if facial yoga can give the same result as cosmetic treatments and tighten your face naturally

The eternal quest for youthful skin! While natural approaches, like face yoga, can promote skin health, there is a perception that cosmetic treatments, like Botox, provide more dramatic and lasting results. Is it true? Also read | Herbal beauty expert Shahnaz Husain shares top 7 anti ageing face masks for younger looking skin

Facial yoga can help tighten your face naturally. However, as per doctors, diet, facial yoga, and collagen boosters can’t compete with clinical treatments, but they can support and maintain the body’s natural processes.(Pexels)

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, experts shared that diet, facial yoga, and collagen boosters can promote skin health; however, their effectiveness compared to clinical treatments — think Botox, fillers, or lasers — may be limited.

Dr Rachana Tataria, consultant, breast reconstruction and plastic surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, Mumbai, said, “Definitely, diet, facial yoga, and collagen boosters cannot compete with or give comparative results to clinical treatment. At the same time, anti-ageing procedures cannot substitute for a healthy lifestyle.”

According to Dr Raina Nahar, consultant dermatologist at PD Hinduja Hospital and MRC, Khar, Mumbai, diet and facial yoga, along with skin treatments, can give you the best benefits. She explained: “None of them can be independent of each other, especially without diet and a disciplined lifestyle. You cannot achieve the best treatments for even the skin sessions that we do, the procedures that we do. So this is mandatory and non-negotiable — you follow a diet which is rich in protein, protein as per the body weight requirement, depending on your physical activity.”

Best approach: combining natural, clinical methods

She added, “The aim of these overall — the holistic approach that you’re following or the skin treatments that you’re doing — is to stimulate the body to age gracefully, to slow down or delay the ageing process by stimulating collagen and elastin. These are the protein, fibres formed in the dermis which give you the tenacity, elasticity and youthful appearance; production of hyaluronic acid, your natural proteins, all these will hold water and give you that hydrated and tight skin.”

Dr Tataria explained that healthy eating, exercise, yoga, and supplements aim to support and maintain the body’s natural processes effectively. “Equally important are sufficient sleep, stress management, and avoiding habits like smoking and drinking. These can help you age well rather than focus on anti-ageing,” Dr Tataria said.

She went on to add: “Various clinical treatments, both surgical and nonsurgical, aim to improve and enhance the body’s features to a more youthful appearance. Diet and exercise work by improving biological age, increasing longevity, and enhancing the body’s immunity to age-related diseases via reducing oxidative stress and improving metabolic health. But they cannot reverse the existing age-related damage and changes. Anti-ageing procedures cannot help improve these dramatically through various procedures that are quick and effective, some with less or more downtime.”

Quick and effective results

Chemical peels, skin boosters, and anti-pigment medications can improve skin texture and quality. Face lifts, blepharoplasty, and neck lifts can address loose skin and volume loss. Dr Tataria shared that various non-surgical procedures available in India include chemical peels, skin boosters, and anti-pigment medications and can ‘help improve skin texture, quality and clear dark spots’.

She added, “Outpatient procedures like Botox, fillers, endolift, laser help with wrinkle and skin tightening treatment. Surgical procedures like face lift, blepharoplasty, neck lift, and fat grafting can help with ageing in people with loose skin and volume loss to a great extent.”

How to use diet as part of your anti-ageing routine?

A balanced diet rich in protein, fibre, and complex carbs supports skin health, Dr Nahar said and explained: “All of this is important. So if you are having three meals in a day, plan it according to 20 grams approximately of protein and 10 grams of fibre per meal. Include your essential fatty acids and complex carbs so that you can digest the protein very well. This will help you age slowly. The fibre will add to your gut bacteria again, which will help.”

She added, “When you are taking care of everything — your mental well-being, your gut — your skin will reflect the good health. So diet forms a very, very important part. It is basic, wholesome protocol for any good treatment, be it for your heart, for your kidney or for your skin. Diet forms the basis. It is the nutrition or the boost that you give.”

How to use facial yoga to look younger?

Dr Nahar further said, “The facial yoga that you’re doing will stimulate the muscles, improve your blood supply, improve the elasticity of your skin, and tighten your muscles. Also, along with that, you can do certain procedures that help you drain the lymphatic fluid in the skin. So, your lymphatic drainage, de-puffing, all this will help you get tighter skin. You will improve the elasticity, fluid retention, water retention, and muscle.”

Collagen boosters for youthful appearance

She added that while dietary collagen is difficult to obtain, consuming greens rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids can help slow down ageing. Asked if you need to add collagen to your diet after the age of 25, Dr Nahar said: “All foods have collagen. It is difficult to get that from the diet, but it can be in a lot of greens that you include in your diet. They will help you age gracefully — your fibre, your antioxidants, your omegas, all these will slow down your ageing process.”

She also shared how skin boosters, exosomes and such skincare procedures, help the skin: “They work directly when injected in the skin or applied on the skin. Some mesotherapy, mesoporation, and microneedling will directly stimulate your dermis to produce collagen, improve your hyaluronic acid, and water retention. So you’re directly doing procedures at the level that you want, and you’re anti-ageing. You cannot compare eating clean to doing an angioplasty. So, these two are independent, but when you combine the two — ‘I had to do the procedure, but along with that, I’m eating clean, I’m maintaining my lifestyle’ — you get the best benefits. We’re all going to age, but a clean diet, a good lifestyle like doing yoga, and treatments, along with skincare, are the way to go.”

Gynaecologist lists 3 red flags of PCOS in teens; shares tips to manage naturally

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is increasingly affecting girls as young as 13 or 14, but its early signs often resemble normal puberty changes, leading to delayed diagnosis. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Yashica Gudesar, director and unit head, obstetrician and gynaecology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dwarka said, “Early detection and timely management can prevent long-term health consequences and help young girls lead healthy, balanced lives.” Also read | Gynaecologist shares 7 lesser-known symptoms of PCOS: Fertility problems to hair thinning

Early signs of PCOS often mimic the symptoms of puberty.(Pixabay)

Dr. Yashica Gudesar further listed the early warning signs of PCOS in young girls that parents should be aware of:

1. Watch for irregular periods

One of the first warning signs of PCOS in teens is irregular or missed periods. While some fluctuation is normal during the first couple of years after menarche, consistently skipped cycles, very heavy bleeding, or fewer than eight periods a year may signal hormonal and inflammatory imbalances that require medical attention.

2. Notice physical changes

High levels of male hormones (androgens) in PCOS frequently lead to overt physical signs like excess face or body hair, severe acne (especially along the jawline), oily skin, dandruff, and dark patches of skin on the neck or underarms. Sudden weight gain, particularly excess belly fat, without an apparent cause is another frequent sign. Also read | Doctor reveals 6 PCOS supplements that actually work and how they benefit hormonal health: Cinnamon, omega 3 and more

3. Emotional and mental health matters

PCOS doesn’t just affect the body, it can impact emotional well-being too. Symptoms might include mood swings, fatigue, anxiety, and poor sleep. Since many PCOS symptoms mimic normal teen stress, they might be downplayed and go unnoticed, unless parents and caregivers are observant.

Why early diagnosis is important?

“Identifying PCOS early allows for better management and helps avoid complications down the road. Importantly, PCOS is treated according to symptoms, not every girl needs medication. Proper evaluation with a gynaecologist or endocrinologist, along with blood tests and ultrasounds (if required), ensures that treatment or lifestyle guidance is tailored to individual needs,” said the doctor.

Tips to manage PCOS naturally:

He gynaecologist said, “Making lifestyle modifications is critical for teenagers with PCOS. Eating a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, and tracking menstrual cycles can all help reduce inflammation, balance hormones, and improve overall health. Establishing these habits early builds a strong foundation for the future.” Also read | Gynaecologist lists 5 PCOS symptoms in teens that parents often overlook: Rapid weight gain, severe acne

The Surprising Confession! This Bollywood Star Admits His Role “Didn’t Come Naturally” | Glamsham.com

Known as the Greek God of Bollywood, this versatile actor has been a part of numerous iconic performances in a career spanning over two decades. With a range of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, they’ve established themselves as a prominent figure in Indian cinema. Starting from Jodhaa Akbar to Dhoom 2, Koi Mil Gaya to Agneepath, Hrithik has left everyone mesmerized again and again. However, one film where even he felt he had come short was the 2003 romantic drama Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, alongside Kareena Kapoor.

“I Wasn’t Mature Enough for That Role” – Hrithik Confesses
During an honest interaction with fans through a Film Companion interview (as pointed out in a Reddit thread and covered by BollywoodShaadis), Hrithik spoke of how difficult it was for him to deal with the character Prem Kishan. As per a question of whether he ever found any role difficult to relate to, Hrithik immediately mentioned Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon.

“I wasn’t mature enough to appreciate that side of myself,” he admitted. “I usually don’t do characters that are so far from my natural self. That hyper, euphoric, uppity ‘wo ho ah ah’ energy don’t come so naturally to me.”

To the delight of the audience, Hrithik made light of one of his own scenes from the film, mimicking a popular line, “Oh Aunty, oh no,” in a squeaky voice. His mock self-deprecation elicited laughter, demonstrating his capacity to laugh at his own earlier faux pas.

Hrithik Gears Up for ‘War 2’
In the coming days, Hrithik will be back in action on the big screen with War 2, helmed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Aditya Chopra. Featuring Jr NTR and Kiara Advani alongside him, the action entertainer sequel to the 2019 blockbuster is set for a worldwide release on August 14, 2025, in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. The film will face a box-office clash with Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’.
