Lowell’s Universal Deal, Mgk’s Grey Cup Gig & More Canada Music News

Lowell is embarking on a new creative partnership with Universal Music Canada.

The Canadian songwriter and producer, born Elizabeth Lowell Boland, has struck up a strategic collaboration with the major label, fusing her creative knowledge and hitmaking prowess with UMC’s A&R team.

Lowell is a proven powerhouse in the music industry, working with artists like pop it-girls Beyoncé, Charli XCX, Tate McRae and homegrown talent including The Beaches, Lu Kala, Sofia Camara and more. From producing to writing to A&R, Lowell has a skilled hand in artist development.

Lowell was a part of the Grammy-nominated songwriting behind Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter hits “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “Bodyguard,” and she helped pen Camara’s charting hit “Girls Like You,” which has made waves across the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 and Billboard Canada airplay charts.

“Universal Music Canada and I have been unofficially working together all the way back to our joint work with bülow, and more recently, Valley, Sofia Camara, and more. I’m so excited to be able to be even more involved with the team and all their amazing artists,” says Lowell.

In this new partnership, Lowell will work alongside UMC’s A&R team, led by Amanda Kingsland and Shawn Marino, who were named co-heads of A&R this year.

“Her remarkable success as a songwriter and her ability to craft global hits speak volumes, but more than that, Lowell has an exceptional gift for finding and nurturing talent while helping artists grow into their best selves,” shares Kingsland.

UMC’s president & CEO Julie Adam (and Billboard Canada Women in Music Executive of the Year) emphasizes the label’s renewed mandate to sign, develop and elevate the next generation of Canadian artists globally.

“Lowell is a creative force,” says Adam. “Her incredible passion and fearless approach to music make her one of one. We exist to help artists achieve artistic and commercial success on a global stage out of Canada, and we are so excited, and grateful Lowell is joining us to supercharge that mission.”

Lowell echoes a similar sentiment, detailing her excitement to work with Adam, calling them “kindred spirits,” as she embarks on this new journey.

“I have so much respect for her, not only what she has already achieved in a short time in her position but what I know she will do moving forward,” she shared. “She has quickly shown me her uniquely immense respect for creatives, and in thinking outside of the box, which is imperative in this rapidly changing industry. Her willingness to grow and learn even from the top inspires me.”

MGK To Headline Grey Cup Halftime Show in Winnipeg

Mgk is headed to Winnipeg.

The rapper and singer will headline this year’s Grey Cup halftime show at Princess Auto Stadium on Nov. 16, the Canadian Football League (CFL) has announced.

The Grammy-nominated hitmaker, born Colson Baker, is known for defying boundaries and crossing genres to reach fans of hip-hop, pop, rock and alternative — making him a prime performer for the football crowd. Mgk’s work has been a success on the charts, with his most recent album, Lost Americana, reaching No. 9 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart.

“Canada has some of the best fans, so I’m excited to play the Grey Cup halftime show and to see some epic Canadian football,” the singer said in a statement.

While the CFL’s flagship game often includes Canadian performers, the last few years have seen American artists take the stage for halftime. Last year, the Jonas Brothers headlined the halftime show at the Grey Cup in Vancouver, while Green Day played the year before.

It’s clear Mgk has an affinity for Canada. In August, he played a surprise show at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern, debuting a couple of unreleased tracks before his seventh studio album came out.

Following his Grey Cup halftime show performance, Mgk kicks off his highly anticipated Lost Americana Tour in support of his seventh studio album of the same name, with stops in Calgary, Edmonton, Hamilton, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Billboard Canada Women in Music Global Rising Star Julia Wolf will join for select dates.

Joining Mgk as Grey Cup performers are Canadian alt-rockers Our Lady Peace, who are opening the festivities at the Grey Cup kickoff show, and emerging singer Catie St. Germain, who will perform the national anthem.

“We’re delivering a remarkable sound and atmosphere that will match the world-class action and entertainment on the field,” said CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston in a statement. “An iconic Canadian band to kick things off, a powerful Manitoban voice to honour our anthem and a rising megastar to electrify halftime. It’s going to be a show as unforgettable as the game itself!”

Canadian Music Organizations Raise Concerns About Artificial Intelligence at the House of Commons

Music industry stakeholders are speaking up about AI before the Canadian House of Commons.

On Wednesday, Oct. 8, representatives from some major music industry groups (SOCAN, Music Publishers Canada and Music Canada) appeared before the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage, which is studying the effects of technological advances in artificial intelligence on the creative industries.

Related

The Spotify app is displayed on a smartphone screen.

The committee is talking to many groups in the cultural and creative industries, but it is an especially hot topic within music, where the use of AI has exploded at a rapid rate.

One of the people who spoke in Ottawa was Music Publishers Canada (MPC) CEO Margaret McGuffin.

“The committee was very interested in hearing our perspectives,” she tells Billboard Canada. “Nearly every song ever written by a Canadian songwriter has already been scraped and stolen by these AI companies without consent, credit or compensation. Imagine that someone accessed your paycheque without permission and that this behaviour was normalized. This is an important issue for creators and businesses in the creative industries and it is wonderful that the Heritage Committee is listening.”

SOCAN CEO Jennifer Brown also spoke at the hearings. Along with MPC, the organization has major concern for fair compensation and royalties for rightsholders.

“The Standing Committee engaged in a good dialogue with the witnesses,” says Andrea Kokonis, SOCAN chief legal officer and general counsel.  “Jennifer Brown reinforced the importance of a healthy licensing market, as well as SOCAN’s long-standing expertise in licensing and royalty distribution — across every new technology that’s reshaped the music industry — positioning us to help ensure fair, practical solutions for both creators and AI companies.”

To McGuffin and MPC, the current situation is alarming.

“Unfortunately, the music industry has seen mass theft of copyright-protected songs by AI companies, both on the input side — for the purpose of training AI models — and output side — the development and publication of unlicensed generative AI models.”

“This poses serious risks for Canada’s creators and the companies that invest in them. To derive fair value for the use of this copyrighted material, the music publishing industry routinely grants licences to technology companies. AI developers should be no different. The emerging market for licensing music to AI developers should be encouraged, including by requiring AI companies to disclose and maintain records of all their training data,” she explains.

Taylor shared, “We wanted to remember every moment leading up to the culmination of the most important and intense chapter of our lives, so we allowed filmmakers to capture this tour and all the stories woven throughout it as it wound down. And to film the final show in its entirety.”

Charlie Puth has announced his fourth studio album, Whatever’s Clever! will be out on March 6, 2026. He released a new single, “Changes,” where he reflects on both personal and professional changes. His wife Brooke Sansone makes a sweet cameo in the music video and they reveal a baby is on the way as they both place their hands on her stomach. Last month, Charlie kicked off a series of sold-out underplay residencies at Blue Note New York and continued this week in Los Angeles where he debuted his new song “Changes.”

The newly added shows are set for May 21, 23, 24, 27, 29, and 30. The residency marks their first extended run of performances in nearly 14 years, following their historic Seven Night Stand in Los Angeles in 2012.

Beatport expands into ticketing, bridging the gap between recorded and live music

by jummy84 October 17, 2025
written by jummy84

Beatport, the world’s largest music store for DJs, producers, and fans, today announced the launch of Beatport Tickets, a new ticketing platform designed exclusively for the dance music community. Powered by a strategic partnership with Weeztix, Europe’s fastest-growing self-service digital ticketing company, this marks the next phase of Beatport’s evolution evolution, extending its platform from music discovery and streaming into live event access.

Launching in October 2025, Beatport Tickets will enable labels, promoters, and venues in the UK and EU to sell tickets directly through Beatportal, Beatport’s dedicated platform for dance music news and nightlife culture. In the coming months, the platform will expand its self-service solution to event organizers in the US and integrate event listings into the Beatport store. In 2026, upcoming events will also appear on artist and label profiles, with tickets directly linked to their Beatport pages.

The ticketing landscape has traditionally kept music discovery and live events separate, with large-scale events thriving while the economics for recorded music remain challenging. At the same time, independent promoters and grassroots venues often lack the tools to compete, whereas artists and labels struggle to turn online engagement into real-world connections. Organizers will be able to enhance event listings with custom playlists, transforming ticket pages into immersive previews of the sounds and scenes behind the show.

“Beatport has always been the home for DJs and fans to connect with the music that drives dance culture,” said Helen Sartory, Chief Revenue Officer at Beatport. “This year, we expanded into the live space, creating a dedicated Live & Interactive team who executed ambitious initiatives like The Block, giving emerging artists opportunities to perform at major festivals. With Beatport Tickets, we’re taking the next big step, bridging the gap between digital and live experiences, supporting promoters, helping artists expand their reach, and giving fans a richer way to engage with dance music. Because without live music, there is no dance scene.”

Powered by Weeztix: Beatport Tickets is built on Weeztix’s proven ticketing technology, which forms the foundation of this new offering. These include the following, with the first three available exclusively through the Beatport–Weeztix partnership:
● Integrated Music + Ticketing: Easily create event pages on Beatportal, linking tracks and playlists directly for promotion and ticket sales, driving deeper fan engagement.
● Upcoming Events on Artist + Label Profiles (coming soon): Tickets will be directly linked to Beatport artist and label pages.
● Expanded Reach: Events featured across Beatport’s store, mobile app, and Beatportal, reaching 40M+ annual users.
● Flexible Sales Tools: Standard tickets, accommodation, tokens, and merchandise.
● Advanced Analytics: Data-driven insights for promoters and labels.
● API Connectivity: Events can connect to third-party apps and services.
● 24/7 Customer Service: Provided by Weeztix to ensure smooth operations for promoters and fans alike.

With this launch, Beatport strengthens its role as a 360 platform for dance music culture, supporting the entire journey from discovery to live experience.

British Composers Unite to End Ghostwriting in Film, TV and Game Music

by jummy84 October 16, 2025
written by jummy84

A number of leading British composers have joined The Ivors Academy’s call to “End Ghostwriting” in a campaign to ensure media composers are credited and compensated fairly for their work.

Calling for an end to the practice of ghostwriting in music for film, TV and video games – the activity of contributing creatively to a soundtrack, without a writing credit being disclosed – the academy is encouraging composers to commit to changing industry practice by signing a pledge.

Related

Ghostwriters in these sectors often receive no screen or IMDb credit, and therefore are excluded from cue sheets, meaning they lose the royalties they are legally entitled to.

According to the academy, the three pillars of the End Ghostwriting pledge are: To be fully transparent with productions about who will compose the music; To ensure that all contributing composers are credited on cue sheets, on screen where possible, and on IMDb; To accurately submit work for awards consideration that fairly credits everyone involved in the composition.

The campaign has been backed by a series of renowned media composers and members of The Ivors Academy, including Sheridan Tongue (Silent Witness, Wonders of the Universe), David Arnold (Casino Royale, Sherlock), Aisling Brouwer (The Buccaneers, White Riot) and more.

Other names involved include Ben Foster (Happy Valley, Torchwood), Daisy Coole and Tom Nettleship (The Pay Day, The Wives), Jessica Jones (The Tinder Swindler, Our Universe), and Sofia degli Alessandri-Hultquist (Dickinson, Red, White and Royal Blue), along with Jenna Fentimen, head of agency at Manners Faber, among others.

In a press release, Roberto Neri, CEO of The Ivors Academy, said: “We’re calling time on ghostwriting, where talented media composers can work on high-profile productions without ever being acknowledged. Thanks to our Media Council of composers, we’re bringing transparency, integrity and fairness back to the heart of audio-visual music. We must give composers credit where credit is due.”

David Arnold, fellow and board member of The Ivors Academy, added: “Our Industry is changing rapidly. Budgets and schedules are becoming more compressed and workloads are becoming more complicated to manage. So sometimes we need help. This campaign is here to ensure that help doesn’t go unrecognised and unrewarded. It’s only decent and it’s only fair.”

The Ivors Academy also runs the Ivor Novello Awards, which recognize excellence in songwriting and composing. The End Ghostwriting campaign will impact the 2026 edition of the event, as entrants will now also be asked to confirm that cue sheets list all composers who wrote a cue from scratch or made a significant new creative contribution. Entries that do not include all qualifying writers will be ineligible for consideration.

Elsewhere, earlier this month (Oct. 2), RAYE received an Ivors Academy Honour in recognition of her songwriting advocacy, led by a campaign that resulted in U.K. major labels committing to cover expenses for songwriters attending their studio sessions.

Upon accepting the award at an event in London, she said: “Being a songwriter is also one of the greatest privileges, and I think it’s something that should be about grafting and talent, not about how rich you are, or to be in a good situation financially to be a songwriter. It shouldn’t be about that.”

Ice Spice Shares ‘Baddie Baddie’ Music Video Featuring Anok Yai

by jummy84 October 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Ice Spice is putting herself first and sitting in the front row at fashion shows in the video for her latest single “Baddie Baddie.” Built around a sample of M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls,” the song name drops designers and calls back to the Bronx rapper’s pop breakthrough. “I was just poppin’ my shit,” she raps. “I ain’t even really mean to go pop.”

Directed by New York duo Evil Twins, the “Baddie Baddie” video follows Ice Spice as she attends various events and dinners. She also struts around with model Anok Yai and poses in a Tiffany Blue hallway.

“I need me a bag, like, you know that we love a Chanelly/I’m feeling like Destiny’s Child, I need my bae to go get me a Kelly,” Ice Spice spits on the second verse. “And I back up a yacht/I’m still getting paid off of ‘Deli.’”

“Deli” appeared on the rapper’s 2023 EP Like..?, which preceded her debut album Y2K. Released in July 2024, the record featured “Gimmie a Light” and “Think U the Shit (Fart).” “It just feels like time is fleeting, so I have to take advantage of the time I do have now while I’m still young, healthy, and everything like that,” Ice Spice told Rolling Stone last year. “It’s funny, because once ‘Munch’ dropped, I started to feel like a clock started ticking up until I drop another smash record or a hit. I feel like every time you do that, the clock resets.”

Trending Stories

“Baddie Baddie” is Ice Spice’s first solo release since she dropped Y2K!: I’m Just A Girl (Deluxe) last December. Earlier this month, she teamed up with Latto on “Gyatt,” which marked the first collaboration between the two rappers. She also made her film debut in Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest starring Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky.

Earlier this year, Ice Spice told Rolling Stone her creative process has stayed the same throughout her career. “Everything kind of changes a little bit slowly throughout the years, but, it’s pretty consistent,” she said. “I usually get into the studio and pull up some beats that I already know that I kind of vibe with, and I like to just start coming up with the top line. And once I come up with the first line, I usually just move on into the hook and I build slowly from there.”

Kylie Jenner makes official music debut as King Kylie

by jummy84 October 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Kylie Jenner has made her official music debut as King Kylie. Check it out below.

Anticipation for Jenner’s first foray into music has been building since 2016, when she launched a campaign for a new range of lip glosses from her beauty brand, Kylie Cosmetics.

In the ad, she played a getaway driver in a Spring Breakers-style scenario, in which three gun-yielding young women cheat some gangsters out of a bag of money in the middle of the desert.

The commercial made headlines for the song used in the background, which was ‘3 Strikes’ – a debut single from a pop group called Terror Jr. At the time, there was little information about the band, leading fans to speculate that the singer was actually Jenner.

Later, it was revealed that the group was actually comprised of former The Cataracs band members David “Campa” Benjamin Singer-Vine, Lisa Vitale, and Felix Snow.

Now, Jenner has teamed up with the group to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Kylie Cosmetics, this time featuring on the track.

A new campaign sees the story continue, with Jenner in an interrogation room being grilled by detectives. “We’ve got you on multiple counts of being the baddest bitch on Earth, slaying 24/7, just being an all-around impressive young lady,” they tell her.

Later, she’s released, and her mother, Kris Jenner, is waiting to pick her up in a Rolls-Royce with a glove compartment full of the upcoming Kylie Cosmetics lip gloss launch.

The film is soundtracked by ‘Fourth Strike’, a new song by Jenner and Terror Jr. Jenner performs only on the bridge of the track, singing: “One strike, two strike, let me get the mood right / I just wanna tell you, ‘I’m sorry’ / Touch me, baby, tell me I’m your baby. Write your name all over my body / Cross the line, I might do it again / Do it on purpose just to see how it ends / King Kylie.”

Watch it below.

Jenner has now set up profiles on Spotify and Apple Music as King Kylie – her famous moniker from the 2010s.

It marks the first official music release from Jenner, though in 2016 she did make a brief cameo on the track ‘Beautiful Day’ from producer Burberry Perry.

Kylie Jenner Makes Her Music Debut in ‘Fourth Strike’ With Terror Jr

by jummy84 October 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Kylie Jenner has officially entered the music scene as the breathy vocalist featured on a new single by Terror Jr called “Fourth Strike.” The single is a continuation of Terror Jr’s song “Three Strikes,” which was featured in an ad campaign for the launch of Kylie Cosmetics lip glosses nearly a decade ago.

To celebrate that milestone, Jenner was featured in “Fourth Strike” and sings a small snippet at the end of the song. “One strike, two strike, let me get the mood right,” Jenner sings and raps in the song’s bridge — “Do it on purpose just to see how it ends.” She ends her verse by whispering her purported artist name, “King Kylie.”

The song is used in a new commercial for Kylie Cosmetics that leans into the teal-tinted visuals of “King Kylie” — the edgy alter ego Jenner launched back in 2014, the same year she began to conceptualize her beauty company. Over the weekend, Jenner announced that she’s re-launching some of her signature Kylie Cosmetics products from that timeframe under the “King Kylie” banner.

In the commercial, Jenner shows off her acting chops, playing a prisoner who has been just been released. Her mother, Kris Jenner, picks her up in a black convertible, and the pair drive off into the sunset.

“This King Kylie Collection is truly for you!!!” Jenner wrote in an Instagram post. “You’re the reason my biggest cosmetic dreams came true, and I wouldn’t be here 10 years later! without your support.”

Terror Jr consists of singer Lisa Vitale and David “Campa” Benjamin Singer-Vine (Felix Snow left the group in late 2017). The first song that the group released was “Three Strikes,” which they debuted in the Kylie Cosmetics lip gloss commercial. At the time, few people new who Terror Jr were, and their image encouraged that approach as there were no faces or names attached to the music.

Several fans assumed Jenner was the main vocalist, though Jenner shut down the rumors via Snapchat, stating that she was not involved in the music. The group revealed their identities after the release of their debut EP, “Bop City,” in late 2016.

Fans will soon be seeing more of Jenner’s acting when she appears in Charli xcx‘s upcoming A24 film “The Moment.” Directed by frequent Charli collaborator Aidan Zamiri, “The Moment” stars Jenner, alongside Alexander Skarsgard, Rachel Sennott, Shygirl and more.

“In this office – my office – we believe in Bruce Springsteen.” “Let’s burn this place down, Jon.” 🎸 20th Century Studios has launched their final official trailer for the music biopic movie Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, a look back at the early days of Bruce Springsteen in the 80s creating his album called “Nebraska”. This rock ‘n roll musical biopic celebration will hit theaters nationwide in late October. In just a few weeks! Inspired by the book of the same name, it follows Bruce Springsteen’s journey in creating and recording his 1982 album “Nebraska” in his Jersey bedroom, which emerged just as he was recording “Born in the USA” with the E Street Band. The movie stars Jeremy Allen White as “The Boss”, and is written & directed by Scott Cooper. The full cast also includes Jeremy Strong as Springsteen’s long-time confidant & manager, Jon Landau; Paul Walter Hauser as guitar tech Mike Batlan; Stephen Graham as Bruce’s father, Doug; Odessa Young as his love interest, Faye; Gaby Hoffman as Springsteen’s mom, Adele; Marc Maron as Chuck Plotkin; David Krumholtz as record exec Al Teller. The studio has already posted so many trailers for this, and featurettes, we’ve seen plenty and it looks pretty good. Rock on, Bruce.

Here’s the final official trailer (+ poster) for Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, from YouTube:

You can rewatch the first trailer for Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere right here / second trailer here.

Made by 20th Century Studios, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere chronicles the making of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 “Nebraska” album when he was a young musician on the cusp of global superstardom (starring Jeremy Allen White as The Boss), struggling to reconcile the pressures of success with the ghosts of his past. Taped on a 4-track recorder in Springsteen’s New Jersey bedroom, the album marked a pivotal time in his life & is considered one of his most enduring works—a raw, haunted acoustic record populated by lost souls searching for a reason to believe. Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere is directed by acclaimed American filmmaker Scott Cooper, director of the films Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace, Black Mass, Hostiles, Antlers, and The Pale Blue Eye previously. The screenplay is also written by Scott Cooper, based on the book “Deliver Me from Nowhere” by Warren Zanes. It’s produced by Cooper, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Eric Robinson and Scott Stuber. 20th Century Studios will release Cooper’s Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere film in theaters nationwide starting on October 24th, 2025 this fall. In support of the weekly New Music Latin roundup and playlist, curated by Billboard Latin and Billboard Español editors, music fans voted for the Mexican artist’s new album as their favorite music release of the week. Ortiz came in first place with 60% of the votes for Discontrol. In second place, with nearly 40 percent of the vote, was La Nueva Ola de la Cumbia’s “Lucha Libre.”

Released via Esaú Ortiz Azuara and distributed by Sony Music Latin, the 14-track LP cements Ortiz as a rising force in música mexicana, opening with the title track that is a bona fide party anthem, fusing disco-tinged beats with regional Mexican instrumentation — showcasing the singer-songwriter’s versatility from the get-go. “Discontrol” sets the tone for Ortiz’s experimental essence in the album, dabbling in hip-hop, pop, cumbia and electronica.

The album also includes his global viral hit “Triple Lavada,” which landed in Billboard‘s Best Songs of 2025 (So Far). The song’s remix, featuring Mexican heavy hitters Luis R Conriquez, Oscar Maydon, Alemán and Victor Mendivil, closes Discontrol.

In April, Ortiz signed with Sony Music Latin and said in a statement, “I have the best team to take my music to the next level and to the ears of everyone.” He added, ” I believe we will do great things together, which makes me very happy.”

The poll also included new releases by Nathy Peluso, who teamed up with Rawayana for “Malportada,” Santa Fe Klan’s “Wuare” and Shakira’s “Zoo” for Zootopia 2.

Editor’s Note: The weekly New Music Latin poll results are posted if the poll generates more than 1,000 votes.
