Movie Review: Some tragedy, some romance, and a regretful helping of corn in ‘Regretting You’

They have cup holders at the multiplex. But as yet, they have not installed Kleenex holders.

Movie Review: Some tragedy, some romance, and a regretful helping of corn in ‘Regretting You’

That might have been a good idea once it was clear that director Josh Boone was going to helm another adaptation of a popular YA novel, this time “Regretting You” by Colleen Hoover. As fans may recall, Boone’s “The Fault in Our Stars” sent millions of overactive tear ducts and sniffly noses into overdrive. It would have been good to have a whole box of tissues at hand.

Of course, that story was about not only about teen love but teen cancer. It was hard not to cry just thinking about it, let alone seeing it. “Regretting You,” a tragicomic intergenerational romance adapted by Susan McMartin, has its share of grief. But the strange way the tears give way to smiles, quips and then full-on rom-com corniness feels a little awkward — and then just weird and annoying. It’s a two-Kleenex ride, at most — definitely not the whole box.

Allison Williams and Dave Franco play Morgan and Jonah, and when we first meet them in high school, they have definite chemistry . But Jonah’s dating Morgan’s sister Jenny, and Morgan is with Jonah’s buddy Chris. This prelude, at a teen gathering on the beach, introduces us to the quartet but also informs us of Morgan’s unexpected pregnancy, which she’s just discovered in a convenience store restroom.

“How did we end up with our exact opposites?” Jonah asks on the beach, as hunky Chris parties and gets drunk, along with Morgan’s fun-loving sister.

And then 17 years later, we meet the foursome again. We’re more than a little disappointed to know that the couples remained intact — sort of. Did Morgan REALLY marry the boyfriend who told her on the beach that she was more fun when drunk? Yes, Morgan married Chris. And sister Jenny is with Jonah — but only because a one-night stand has led to a baby, which they’re co-parenting.

Then there’s the other baby — Morgan’s daughter Clara , about to turn 17, lovely, smart and aiming for drama school. There’s some conflict with her mother about this ambition, though like so much here, it really doesn’t ring true that Morgan, as portrayed by the always-appealing Williams, would oppose such a thing. But whatever. Who are we to question the stuff between teen daughters and their moms, right?

Then Miller turns up. Known as the coolest guy in school but also a slightly sketchy sort , Miller, played sweetly by Mason Thames, enters Clara’s life when he hitches a ride with her. She knows he has a girlfriend, but is smitten. Theirs is a rocky road to love. Kidding! Only a few pesky pebbles stand in the way, seemingly meant to take up pages in a meandering script.

But back to the main event: Everyone is coexisting with a minimum of turbulence … until tragedy happens, leaving a jagged streak of grief that cuts across the family.

Hoover’s readers will know what we’re talking about. So, partial spoiler alert: An accident cuts down the character list. And throws every single relationship into turmoil.

It’s hard to discuss much of this without further spoilers, but let’s just say we have the requisite zigs and zags but literally no real suspense. Along the way, the wittiest moment is when Jonah’s baby finds himself on a shopping cart in the supermarket wedged between large bottles of white wine, with which Morgan is self-medicating. Speaking of medication, one assumes the cheery line, “Acetaminophen always helps!” was written before it became a political statement.

Last year’s adaptation of Hoover’s “It Ends With Us,” directed by Justin Baldoni as you may have heard, was a big hit, and so expectations have been considerable for “Regretting You.” There are some sweet kisses and some nice declarations of motherly devotion but the cheese factor is regretfully high. And the whole thing ends with a wrap-it-all-up scene so corny, I literally felt myself blush in the darkness of the multiplex.

If there had been a box of Kleenex beside me rather than a Diet Coke, I would have covered my eyes.

“Regretting You,” a Paramount Pictures release, has been rated PG-13 “for sexual content, teen drug and alcohol use, and brief strong language.” Running time: 117 minutes. One and a half stars out of four.

“We’ve all been wrong about her…” Universal Pictures has revealed the first official trailer for a movie called Reminders of Him, an adaptation of the bestselling novel of the same name by Colleen Hoover. Another romantic drama with heavy emotions – brought to the big screen by an all-female filmmaking team. Set for release in theaters nationwide starting March 2026 early next year. “There was before you and there was during you. For some reason, I never thought there would be an after you.” After returning home from prison for a tragic accident in the past, Kenna attempts to reconnect with her young daughter but faces resistance from everyone except a bar owner with ties to her child. As the two begin to grow closer, Kenna must confront her past mistakes to build a better future – and hopefully not end up in heartbreak again. Starring Maika Monroe as Kenna, Tyriq Withers (from Him) as Ledger, Lauren Graham, Bradley Whitford, Rudy Pankow, Lainey Wilson, Jennifer Robertson, & Zoe Kosovic as Kenna’s daughter Diem. This actually looks pretty good – much better than these cheesy romances usually do. Worth a watch.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Vanessa Caswill’s movie Reminders of Him, direct from YouTube:

“You can’t rewrite the past, but you can start again…” The literary phenomenon from bestselling author Colleen Hoover becomes a transformative film about motherhood, forgiveness and the power of love to overcome even the worst mistake. After a perfect outing with her boyfriend, Kenna (Maika Monroe) makes an unbearable mistake that sends her to prison. Seven years later, Kenna returns to her hometown in Wyoming, hoping to rebuild her life and earn the chance to reunite with her young daughter, Diem, whom she has never known. When Diem’s custodial grandparents adamantly refuse Kenna’s attempts to see her daughter, Kenna discovers unexpected compassion, and then something truer & deeper, with former NFL player & local bar owner Ledger (Tyriq Withers). As their secret romance develops, so do the dangers for both of them – leading Kenna closer toward heartbreak and, ultimately, the hope for a second chance…

Reminders of Him is directed by filmmaker Vanessa Caswill, of the film Love at First Sight previously, plus episodes of the series “Thirteen”, “Little Women”, “Gold Digger”, and many short films. The screenplay is written by Colleen Hoover and Lauren Levine, adapted from Hoover’s novel of the same name published in 2022. Produced by Lauren Levine, Gina Matthews, Colleen Hoover. Universal debuts Caswill’s Reminders of Him movie in theaters nationwide starting March 13th, 2025 early next year. How does it look so far?

Fans shave heads to see sci-fi movie ‘Bugonia’ starring Emma Stone

LOS ANGELES, – Fans arrived for an early screening of the absurdist sci-fi comedy film “Bugonia,” on Monday night in Los Angeles with one unique condition—the theater only admitted bald people.

The film’s distributor, Focus Features, challenged audiences to shave their heads to see “Bugonia,” starring Oscar-winning actor Emma Stone.

Stone and Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos gained a powerful fanbase after teaming up for Oscar-nominated films “Poor Things” and “The Favourite.”

“Bugonia” will be released in select theaters on Friday and then across the U.S. on October 31.

In “Bugonia,” Stone plays a powerful pharmaceutical CEO named Michelle Fuller, who is kidnapped by two conspiracy theorist-cousins who are convinced that she’s an alien – so much so, they shave her head.

With a barber in the foyer, fans like Sam Sherman from Los Angeles stepped up to get their buzz cut to gain entry to the screening.

“I was already thinking of shaving my head,” Sherman said.

“I saw, like, a post about this and I was like, that’s a perfect excuse because I want to see ‘Bugonia’ anyway and I get to see it two weeks early or whatever it is, and then I get a free haircut and a free movie. It’s hard to say no to that,” he added.

Matthew Lopez, 29, from Los Angeles, thought the bald screening inspired by Stone’s shaved head was a great idea.

“It’s almost feeling immersive, like, ok, ‘I did it, she did it.’ I can feel some connection to the story,” he said.

For Richard Chong, 36, it was a chance to appease his friends and family.

“I like the director. I think he’s really good, very weird and my friends hate my bowl cut, so this is for them, also my wife, she really hates it,” Chong said.

“Any last minute advice?” 20th Century has revealed a second trailer for Ella McCay, a new half political / half family comedy arriving to watch in theaters in December later this year. This is the first film directed by James L. Brooks since he made How Do You Know way back in 2010 (which we covered for its release!). As long as he can still make us laugh. In Ella McCay, Emma Mackey stars as an idealistic young woman who juggles her family and work life. A comedy about the people you love and how to survive them. She’s taking over the job of her mentor, the state’s longtime incumbent governor, and now starting a whole new life (in politics). The full ensemble cast features Emma Mackey as the titular Ella McCay, along with Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Lowden, Kumail Nanjiani, Ayo Edebiri, Spike Fearn, Rebecca Hall, Julie Kavner, Joey Brooks, Becky Ann Baker, with Albert Brooks and Woody Harrelson. This is a better trailer than the first one, but still not sure this is going to be a big surprise this year. It looks light and charming and funny – which is more than most movies and enough to make me want to watch it anyway. Check it out.

Here’s the second official trailer (+ new poster) for James L. Brooks’ comedy Ella McCay, from YouTube:

Ella McCay is both written and directed by iconic American comedian / producer / writer / filmmaker James L. Brooks, director of the hit movies Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News, I’ll Do Anything, As Good as It Gets, Spanglish, and How Do You Know, and a writer on many others (including “The Simpsons”). Produced by James L. Brooks, Richard Sakai, Julie Ansell, Jennifer Simchowitz. This hasn’t premiered at any festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. 20th Century Studios debuts James L. Brooks’ Ella McCay movie in theaters nationwide starting December 12th, 2025 right at the end of this year. So who wants to watch this film?

Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat Movie REVIEW: Harshvardhan Rane’s Shoulders Aren’t Strong Enough To Carry This Obsessive Love Story

Film:
Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat

Bubble Rating:
1.5 stars

Director: Milap Milan Zaveri

Writer: Milap Milan Zaveri, Mushtaq Shiekh

Cast: Harshvardhan Rane, Sonam Bajwa, Shaad Randhawa, Sachin Khedekar

Runtime: 141 minutes (2 hours, 21 minutes)

Platform: In Theatres

Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat Review

Milap Milan Zaveri’s Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat is a story we’ve seen time and time again in Bollywood just repackage with some stellar acting chops. The premise is simple – an entitled brat belonging to a rich and powerful family – who thinks he can buy the world, falls obsessively in love with a strong woman and crosses all limits to make her his. But does he succeed? Does the strong woman give into his relentless courtship or does she stand strong and take a stand? Well, that’s all EDKD is all about, punctuated with well placed songs and narrative that would have being a money maker in the 80s and 90s.

Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat tells the obsessive love story that follows when politician Vikramaditya (Harshvardhan Rane) gets captivated with the beauty of leading Bollywood star Adaa (Sonam Bajwa) and decides she will become his wife. From clearing her schedule to make sure she spends time with him to approaching her family with shagun while telling them about the soon-to-take place marriage, this loving and community serving politician moves mountains and sees to make the female fall for him. However, she’s a strong woman who has a mind of her own and sticks to ‘NO’ is a statement. Will they have a happily ever after – like we’ve seen in 100s of films in the past, despite the ‘hero’s’ obsession increasing?

Read our review to know if the film is worth watching in theatres.

What Works

The actor’s face cards and Harshvardhan’s acting talent

What Doesn’t Work

Every thing aside from the lead actor’s acting and the manner in which the songs are incorporated into he story.

Conclusion

Skip this movie and save your money – you can burn it in another manner if you want by gambling or buying crackers, and time. While Harshvardhan and to a certain extent Sonam’s performances are strong, the problematic story is regressive, misleading and something that doesn’t belong in 2025.

Massive Indian Action Movie ‘Baahubali: The Epic’ Re-Release Trailer

“Strangers look up to me like I’m God. Who am I?!” Variance has revealed the new trailer for Baahubali: The Epic, a brand new version of the two-part Baahubali epic series of movies. This is pretty much India’s Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair (also finally getting released this year). Directed by S.S. Rajamouli, who later went on to make the world-shattering RRR, directed these original two action movies Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017). Now he’s re-edited & remastered both of them into one single movie, combining footage from both with technical enhancements and previously unseen scenes. When a lost prince is rescued and raised in exile, he grows up unaware of his past. Years later, he returns to uncover the truth about his father’s murder & his mother’s imprisonment, and will rise to reclaim his place as the rightful king. Baahubali: The Epic stars Prabhas in dual roles, with Rana Daggubati, Anushka, Tamannaah Bhatia, Ramya Krishnan, Sathyaraj, and Nassar. I actually went to see this in theaters back in 2015 and it’s proper awesome. I bet even players better now as this final version. Give it a shot and experience a real epic like no other on the BIGGEST screens around – including IMAX worldwide.

Here’s the new official trailer (+ poster) for S.S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Epic, direct from YouTube:

Baahubali: The Epic Trailer

Baahubali: The Epic Poster

10 years before RRR took the world by storm, master filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli redefined Indian Cinema with his two-part Baahubali saga – from 2015 & 2017. Now, the epic tale of royalty, revenge, kings, and wars has been personally re-edited by the master himself into a single unforgettable cinematic experience, with fully remastered picture and sound (and a few new surprises), so audiences can reunite to experience the euphoria the way it was intended: on the big screen. When a lost prince (Prabhas) is rescued & raised in exile, he grows up unaware of his past. Years later, he returns to uncover the truth about his father’s murder and his mother’s imprisonment, and must rise to reclaim his place as the rightful king. Baahubali: The Epic (aka Bahubali) is directed by acclaimed Indian filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli, his 10th feature film at the time – he later directed RRR in 2022. Produced by Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni under Arka Media Works. Made in the Telugu film industry (in both Telugu & Tamil). Baahubali: The Beginning first released in 2015; Baahubali: The Conclusion in 2017. Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Epic opens in theaters worldwide starting October 31st, 2025 – with special screenings October 29th. Who wants to go watch it?

“Hope is the strongest thing we have.” VVS Films has revealed the first official trailer for a survival movie called Not Without Hope, adapted from the book of the same name. This is set for release in theaters this December. Directed by Joe Carnahan, it’s one of two upcoming movies he has coming out back-to-back – he also has The RIP scheduled for January. Not Without Hope tells the true story of four friends stuck in the Gulf of Mexico when their fishing boat capsizes during a storm. The book description sums it up nicely: “an inspiring and unforgettable story of courage and strength, friendship and loss, and, most importantly, hope, in the vein of Touching the Void, Into Thin Air, Between a Rock and a Hard Place, and Piers Paul Read’s classic survival tale, Alive.” This intense open water survival thriller stars Zachary Levi as Nick Schuyler, Quentin Plair as Marquis Cooper, Terrence Terrell as Corey Smith, Marshall Cook as Will Bleakley, with Josh Duhamel as the Coast Guard Captain and JoBeth Williams as Marcia. Of course this reminds me of The Perfect Storm, but it looks nowhere near as good as that movie. This doesn’t look that great at all.

Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Joe Carnahan’s film Not Without Hope, from YouTube:

Not Without Hope Poster

An extraordinary true story. Best friends Nick Schuyler (Zachary Levi) and Will Bleakley (Marshall Cook), and NFL players Marquis Cooper (Quentin Plair) and Corey Smith (Terrence Terrell), depart Clearwater, FL for a fishing trip 70 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico. While attempting to free a trapped anchor before a storm hits, their boat capsizes, throwing the friends violently into the freezing water. US Coast Guard Cpt. Timothy Close (Josh Duhamel) and his crew, beaten back in their air rescue efforts, summon their largest ship to cut through the raging ocean as the group battles massive waves, dehydration, hypothermia, and even sharks, in their epic struggle to survive & return to their loved ones. Not Without Hope is directed by American action producer / filmmaker Joe Carnahan, director of the movies Blood Guts Bullets & Octane, Narc, Smokin’ Aces, The A-Team, The Grey, Stretch, Boss Level, Copshop, and Shadow Force previously. The screenplay is by E. Nicholas Mariani and Joe Carnahan. Based on the book of the same name by Nick Schuyler and Jere Longman. VVS Films will debut Joe Carnahan’s Not Without Hope in Canadian theaters starting December 5th, 2025; it also opens in the US on December 12th later this year. Look any good?

Adam Driver Pitched Kylo Ren ‘Star Wars’ Movie With Steven Soderbergh

by jummy84 October 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Adam Driver and Steven Soderbergh almost brought their own twist to a galaxy far, far away.

In a recent sit down with AP, Driver said that over the span of two years, he and Soderbergh developed a script called “The Hunt for Ben Solo.” The film would have taken place after the events of “The Rise of Skywalker,” and followed Driver’s Kylo Ren, aka Ben Solo, on a search for redemption.

Soderbergh roughed out the story with “Logan Lucky” screenwriter Rebecca Blunt. Scott Z. Burns later joined to pen the script.

“I always was interested in doing another ‘Star Wars,’” Driver said. “I had been talking about doing another one since 2021. Kathleen [Kennedy] had reached out. I always said: ‘With a great director and a great story, I’d be there in a second.’ I loved that character and loved playing him.”

Driver described the film as “handmade and character-driven,” comparing it to 1980’s “The Empire Strikes Back.” The “White Noise” star said that that film is the “standard” of what a “Star Wars” movie should be.”

Soderbergh and Driver pitched “The Hunt for Ben Solo” to Kathleen Kennedy, Dave Filoni and Cary Beck at Lucasfilm, who “loved the idea.” However, when they took the script over to Disney, they were shut down.

“We presented the script to Lucasfilm. They loved the idea,” Driver recalled. “They totally understood our angle and why we were doing it. We took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was that.”

Lucasfilm declined to comment.

Soderbergh told AP of the experience, “I really enjoyed making the movie in my head. I’m just sorry the fans won’t get to see it.” Driver agreed, calling the project “one of the coolest (expletive) scripts I had ever been a part of.”

Driver debuted as Kylo Ren in 2015’s “The Force Awakens,” and reprised the role in 2017’s “The Last Jedi” and 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.”

‘Filming the Bruce Springsteen movie was incredibly difficult’

by jummy84 October 19, 2025
written by jummy84

19 October 2025

Playing Bruce Springsteen in a new biopic took a terrible toll on Jeremy Allen White.

Jeremy Allen White: ‘Filming the Bruce Springsteen movie was incredibly difficult’

The 35-year-old actor plays the legendary rocker, 76, in the movie Deliver Me From Nowhere but admitted it was difficult to be away from his daughters during filming and put himself in “painful places” to accurately portray Bruce.

He told The Sunday Times: “I feel like I’m pain for hire. Like I’m getting paid to put myself in painful places.

“On The Bear it’s not like I walk around punching walls and screaming in my closet. But I stay close to that energy and it’s uncomfortable – and filming the Bruce movie was incredibly difficult.

“I was in isolation. I was far from my children. I didn’t travel home much. It made me unwell and when I came out of it I thought, ‘There has to be a better way’.”

Jeremy – who has won rave reviews for his work as troubled chef Carmy Berzatto on TV series The Bear – shares daughters Ezer, seven, and Dolores, four, with ex-wife Addison Timlin.

Meanwhile, Jeremy previously admitted preparing to portray Bruce took months of “tough” work.

Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, he said: “There was a lot of prep. It was tough. I am such an admirer of Bruce, so it took a long time to accept I could do it.

“It was daunting and I had scary days, but I trained six times a week for six months so I could sound a bit like Bruce. The rasp came naturally after singing the songs over and over and over again.”

However, Bruce revealed Jeremy was always his first choice to play him on screen as he is a big fan of The Bear.

He said: “I’d seen him in The Bear and saw how the camera read his internal psychology. His performance is very, very real and authentic. He was my first choice, and fortunately, he took the job.”
