Drinking coffee on empty stomach? AIIMS-trained gastroenterologist shares 7 coffee mistakes wrecking your gut and liver

Love your daily cup of coffee? It can actually be great for your liver – but only if you’re not making some common mistakes. From drinking it on an empty stomach or late at night to overdoing your caffeine intake in order to fight off tiredness, certain habits can quietly harm your gut and liver health over time.

Dr Saurabh Sethi, a California-based gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford Universities, has revealed seven common coffee mistakes that could be harming your gut and liver health. In an Instagram video posted on November 12, the gastroenterologist explains how daily habits – such as drinking coffee on an empty stomach or consuming more than four cups a day – can negatively impact your health.

Coffee on an empty stomach

According to Dr Sethi, drinking coffee on an empty stomach increases stomach acid levels, which can lead to acid reflux, nausea, and even gastritis if done regularly.

Sugar, creamers and syrups

The gastroenterologist explains that flavoured coffees are loaded with unhealthy calories, containing around 30 to 50 grams of sugar. These empty calories fuel fatty liver disease and even diabetes.

More than 4 cups of coffee per day

Dr Sethi highlights, “Over 400 milligrams of caffeine or approximately four cups leads to cortisol spikes, gut irritation, palpitations, and anxiety.”

Late-night coffee

Caffeine’s half-life – the time it takes for half of the consumed amount to leave your system – is approximately five to six hours. Dr Sethi stresses, “An evening cup can delay sleep, impairing liver repair.”

Masking fatigue with coffee

We often use coffee as a way to boost energy and beat tiredness due to lack of sleep but the gastroenterologist emphasises, “Using caffeine instead of fixing sleep worsens burnout, brain fog, and gut stress over time.”

Artificial sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners like sucralose and aspartame are often touted as ‘zero calories’ but Dr Sethi warns that this does not mean they are harmless. In fact, these artificial sweeteners can disrupt your gut microbiome.

Light roast is not gentler

The gastroenterologist debunks the common belief that light roast coffee is gentler on the stomach, clarifying instead, “dark roast is actually less acidic and may be better tolerated in reflux or GERD.”

With Deadbeat, Tame Impala Gets Stuck in a Loop: Review
Music

Tame Impala Makes the Same Old Mistakes on Deadbeat: Review

by jummy84 October 17, 2025
written by jummy84

You’re at a house party and you’re not sober. The music thuds through the walls as you slip into the bathroom, lock the door, and find yourself face-to-face with your reflection. The fluorescent light is unforgiving. You stare back at this person in the mirror and think: Who the fuck is this clown? But you’re not angry. You’re not having a meltdown. The drugs keep the emotions present but manageable, like they’re happening to someone else. Instead, you just stand there, locked in this moment of clarity that isn’t quite clarity — more like a psychedelic dissociation from yourself.

This is where Deadbeat lives, Kevin Parker’s latest album as Tame Impala. Throughout the project’s 56 minutes, Parker assumes the role of the man in the mirror multiple times, lamenting his constant fuck-ups, his deepest insecurities, and his inability to truly connect with people — before stumbling out of the bathroom and rejoining the party. Deadbeat toggles between unflinching self-awareness and euphoric avoidance, Parker attempting to rave his way toward some resolution that never quite arrives.

Get Tame Impala Tickets Here

It’s necessary to mention that this is a completely different Tame Impala than the one most fans are familiar with, and Parker almost goes out of his way to make this clear throughout Deadbeat. Such was the intention behind “End of Summer,” the throbbing, strangely inert club-psych experiment that served as the album’s lead single. Ever wanted to hear what a Tame Impala acid house song sounds like? Do you long to be in Kevin Parker’s brain at 4am, mid-dance party? This is the album for you.

Related Video

Inspired by the Western Australia rave scene and extended free parties held in the countryside, Deadbeat is a major departure from the psych rock sound that captivated leagues of Millennials and Zoomers over a decade ago and a much closer step towards whatever RÜFÜS DU SOL are currently doing. There’s some solid guitar riffage and the occasional organic drum beat here and there, but the usual instrumental staples of a Tame Impala song are ditched for smooth, metronomic electronics and the spartan toolkit of the rave: kick drums, synth bass, and just enough ornamentation to remind you this is still a Kevin Parker production.

It’s a bold sonic reinvention, and the new direction certainly adds some dynamism to Tame Impala’s sound. But Parker’s ambitions are slightly mismatched. Tackling weighty subjects like shame and self-hatred against lean, sanitized beats creates a strange friction; there’s a disconnect between the rawness of these emotions and the distance employed in their presentation. Parker approaches nearly every song drenched in some kind of reverb, bemoaning some cyclical pattern and chalking it all up to the idea that this is just who he is.

But far too often, the instrumental backdrops are rendered weightless and devoid of passion. “Not My World” is rooted in a pleasant, pulsating rhythm, but nothing about its kaleidoscopic beat drop suggests Parker is an outsider peering in. The ’80s-esque “Piece of Heaven” follows follows the same pattern, starting with genuine tenderness — strings, crooning, all the signifiers of romantic longing — but soon, a boom-bap beat straight from Timbaland’s computer flies in, almost like Parker is hitting the eject button on his own vulnerability. Far too often on Deadbeat, the songs gesture toward emotional depth without ever fully committing to the messiness required to reach it.

Deadbeat works best when Parker ditches the hypnotic sprawl of house music and fully dons his pop star hat. At first listen, “Oblivion” is a bit of a confusing detour with a dembow beat behind it — but the moment the chorus cracks open and Parker croons “I would,” with glorious harmonies enveloping him, it sounds like the faintest echo of an old Tame Impala song squeezed inside a beat originally written for Bad Bunny.

Meanwhile, “Dracula” is an outstanding cut and one that totally achieves the dichotomy he’s set out to depict on Deadbeat: its effortlessly groovy, vibrant beat captures the allure of a party in the wee hours of the night, the seductive pull of being irresponsible and making bad decisions. Parker even leans into silliness; “Now I’m Mr. Charisma, fuckin’ Pablo Escobar,” goes one line, which could’ve been eye-roll-inducing but instead adds to the song’s playful menace. It’s a track that finds Parker almost too desperate to return to the party, where numbing out feels better than being alone and facing whatever’s waiting in the mirror.

But even below the surface, Parker comparing himself to “Dracula” beyond “running from the sun” is fascinating because he’s casually positioning himself as a villain; Parker never quite goes full ‘Goblin Mode’ on Deadbeat, but he does deliver on the title’s promise by frequently referring to himself as a fucking loser and a lowly, humble, almost pathetic lover boy.

“No Reply” is a great example of this: After a handful of apologies and excuses to his crush for not texting back, Parker confesses that he just wants to “seem like a normal guy” and croons, “You’re a cinephile, I watch Family Guy/ On a Friday night, off a rogue website/ When I should be out/ With some friends of mine/ Runnin’ rеckless wild in the streets at night/ Singin’ ‘Life, oh, lifе,’ with our arms out wide.” Parker slightly overwriting this line suggests that one small comparison — she watches artistically-riveting films, he watches a cartoon show — triggers an entire mental spiral, showing how even the smallest perceived inadequacy can totally unravel his sense of self-worth. It’s no wonder he can’t text her back; just the thought of her makes him desperate to retreat.

But while some of Parker’s exercises in contrast are effective, stagnation and fatalism dominate the album’s lyrical themes. It’s fitting that a lot of the beats on Deadbeat, especially “Not My World,” “Ethereal Connection,” and “End of Summer,” are pulsing and repetitive, because much of his musings end up feeling the same way.

So many lyrics circle back to the idea that he’ll never change, he’s doomed to be a disaster, and he has no choice but to surrender to his inner dirtbag. “Obsolete” is a good example of this, with Parker so fixated on the idea that he’ll screw up a relationship that he confesses to his partner, “I’m already talkin’ like it’s done/ Sayin’ things like, ‘At lеast we had some fun’/ And things like, ‘I guеss we met too young’” At least “Loser” brings a little more drama in the mix, with Parker asking rhetorically, “Do you wanna tear my heart out?”

It’s only towards the end where Parker finally reclaims a little bit of agency. “Afterthought” finds him fed up with being treated as disposable, the quick tempo propelling his frustration forward rather than trapping it in another throbbing loop. It’s a welcome departure from the album’s fatalism, even if it arrives too late to shift the overall mood.

At its core, Deadbeat is an album about someone completely trapped in a cycle of bad habits and self sabotage — which makes its album cover all the more odd. It’s an image of Parker embracing his daughter, smiling with contentment. It’s a sweet, sentimental photo, sure, but it feels remarkably incongruous to the content of the album it advertises. Parker has discussed that the image is meant to represent a reclamation of the idea of the “Deadbeat Dad,” that perhaps he’s allowing himself to acknowledge his shortcomings while owning the reality that he has gotten older, that responsibilities are more important, that there is someone bigger than himself depending on him.

But on an album that spends 56 minutes running from itself, that realization never makes it past the cover art.

Govinda Opens Up About Wife Sunita Ahuja’s Past Mistakes: Is Their Marriage Strong Enough? | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 October 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Bollywood actor Govinda is speaking out on his marriage and forgiveness, giving unusual personal details on his long-term relationship with wife Sunita Ahuja. On the chat show Two Much with Kajol and Twinkle, the veteran actor opened up on the highs and lows of their marriage and why he has forgone his wife on several occasions in the past.

Govinda, who wedded Sunita on March 11, 1987, defined their relationship as warm and funny. Talking about their relationship, the actor of Bhagam Bhag said, “She is a child herself. My children treat my wife like a child. Sunita is like a kid, but the tasks she was entrusted with—she looked after our home only because she is what she is. She is an honest child.”. Her words are never incorrect. It’s just that she speaks what she should not.”

His endearing comments pointed out how, in spite of problems, their marriage has endured. Govinda admitted that forgiveness has been a key factor in their marriage surviving. He intimated that, like any couple, they also have had misunderstandings and errors, but he always preferred to comprehend her instead of storing up resentments.

The Sandwich star went on to ponder the various ways men and women look at life, citing the tenacity and sense of wisdom that women contribute to a relationship. “The issue with men is that they are not able to think on such lines. I always feel that a man heads the house, but women head the entire world,” he claimed, as the audience applauded.

Govinda also mentioned that it’s not always simple to view the world as a woman would, but acknowledging her contribution is vital. For him, Sunita has been the cornerstone of their house, taking care of both family and duties and yet keeping her liveliness intact.

For those who don’t know, Govinda and Sunita’s marriage has from time to time been the target of media gossip. Some years ago, rumors went round they had sought divorce after decades together. But both categorically dismissed the gossip, assuring their loyalty towards one another.

Their strong relationship is a beacon of mutual understanding, tolerance, and forgiveness principles Govinda insists are critical to any lasting relationship.

Breakfast is a crucial meal for gut health, but mistakes can lead to bloating. Gastroenterologist Dr Sethi highlights 10 common breakfast errors.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. What you eat first thing in the morning to break your fast after the last meal you ate the previous night, after waking up, sets the tone for the day you will have. However, even with this knowledge, we still make mistakes that can create issues for our gut health, such as bloating.

We all may be guilty of skipping breakfast on some days, but being a frequent offender could impact our overall health. (Freepik)

Dr Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford Universities, shared in an Instagram post on October 9, the 10 mistakes we unknowingly make during breakfast that may be causing bloating.

10 mistakes that cause bloating after having breakfast

Sharing the post, Dr Sethi wrote, “10 breakfast mistakes that cause bloating, according to a stomach doctor. Which of these mistakes do you think you might be making?” Let’s find out what these mistakes are:

  • Skipping breakfast and then overeating later
  • Starting the day with sugar cereals or pastries
  • Overloading on milk if you are lactose sensitive
  • Drinking coffee on an empty stomach
  • Eating too fast without chewing properly
  • Using artificial sweeteners in drinks or foods
  • Relying on ultra-processed protein bars or shakes
  • Having carbonated drinks first thing in the morning
  • Not including enough fibre-rich foods in your breakfast
  • Large high-fat fried breakfast options (greasy oils, processed meats)

Why is skipping breakfast harmful?

We all may be guilty of skipping breakfast on some days, but being a frequent offender could impact our overall health. In a 2022 interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Ashit Bhagwati, honorary consultant in internal medicine and honorary academic director ICU at Bhatia Hospital, Mumbai, revealed skipping breakfast can be responsible for weight gain, slow metabolism, high BP, headache and dizziness, uncontrolled blood sugar levels, acidity, low energy, and low immunity. Are you eating sprouts the wrong way? Nutritionist explains how common mistakes can make this healthy snack unhealthy

by jummy84 October 5, 2025

Sprouts are often hailed as a superfood – tossed into salads or chaats, blended into smoothies, or eaten raw for their crunch and “clean” health appeal. Many believe that eating them uncooked preserves nutrients and boosts digestion. But is this popular health habit really as beneficial as it seems? Turns out, not quite!

The nutritionist shares healthier ways to consume sprouts.(Unsplash)

Khushi Chhabra, a holistic health nutritionist and diabetes educator, explained why eating raw sprouts might not be as healthy as it seems – and why they’re best consumed cooked. In an Instagram video posted on October 4, the nutritionist breaks down why the craze for eating raw sprouts is more fad than fact, how it can impact your gut and digestion, and shares healthier ways to enjoy sprouts for maximum nutritional benefit.

How eating raw sprouts can be unhealthy

According to Khushi, “Sprouts are one of the most nutrient-dense foods because they have protein, fibre, and vitamins. But a lot of people get bloating, constipation, and gas when they eat raw sprouts.” She further mentions that sprouts are rich in fibre, enzymes, antioxidants, vitamin C, folate, and around three to four grams of protein per 100 grams. However, they are higher in carbohydrates than proteins – about 60 – 65% – hence, overeating is not ideal. She also explains, “Raw sprouts can cause bloating, gas, and even constipation because they’re hard to digest and may carry bacteria when eaten uncooked.”

What’s the right ways to eat sprouts

Khushi recommends steaming or lightly sauteing sprouts before eating them, as this breaks down tough fibres that are harder to digest. She suggests, “Add heating spices like ginger, black pepper, cumin, and rock salt as they help in digestion and keep your gut happy.” According to the nutritionist, practising portion control is key – about half to one cup is sufficient for most people to reap the benefits without overdoing it. Lastly, she advises pairing sprouts with pure protein sources like paneer, curd, or eggs to balance the meal.

Prince William won’t make ‘same mistakes’ as his parents

by jummy84 October 3, 2025
written by jummy84

3 October 2025

Prince William doesn’t want to make the “same mistakes” as his parents when raising his own children.

Prince William wants to learn from his own upbringing

The 43-year-old royal – who has Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven, with wife Catherine, Princess of Wales – has pledged to “learn from” the way his own life was impacted when King Charles and his late first wife Princess Diana separated because he’s aware of how any “drama” his brood are exposed to can have an effect when they are older.

Speaking to Eugene Levy on his Apple TV+ series The Reluctant Traveler, William said: “You have to have that warmth, that feeling of safety, security, love.

“That all has to be there, and that was certainly part of my childhood. My parents got divorced at eight, so that lasted a short period of time.

“But, you take that and you learn from it and you try and make sure you don’t do the same mistakes as your parents. I think we all try and do that and I just want to do what’s best for my children, but I know that the drama and the stress when you’re small really affects you when you’re older.”

William prioritises finding the right “balance” with his work that works for his family and he and Catherine try to be present for the start and end of the school day.

Asked if he keeps a 9-5 schedule, he said: “Not really, no. It doesn’t quite work like that, but I do try and stick to school time tables as best as possible. So, most days we’re in and out of school doing pick-ups and drop offs.

“Getting the balance of work and family life right is really important. Because for me, the most important thing in my life is family, and everything is about the future and about if you don’t start the children off now with a happy, healthy, stable home, I feel you’re setting them up for a bit of a hard time and a fall.

“And so, it’s about making sure that we can look after our families, look after our children, in a way that is best for their future.”

And the family always have dinner together.

Asked if they sit at the dinner table together, William said: “Yep, absolutely, yep definitely. So, we sit and chat; it’s really important. None of our children have any phones, which we’re very strict about.”

The prince and his wife encourage their children to stay active and take part in various sports.

He said: “Louis loves the trampoline, so he’s obsessed with trampolining and actually Charlotte does a lot as well.

“As far as I can tell, they just end up jumping up and down on the trampoline, beating each other up, most of the time. Apparently, there is an art to it.

“Charlotte does her netball as well, and her ballet, and so keeping them busy with sports and being outdoors is really important.

“They’re trying to learn musical instruments. I’m not sure how successful we’re being with that. George loves his football and his hockey.”

Nutritionist reveals 5 common Navratri fasting mistakes: ‘Too much sabudana…’

by jummy84 September 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Many devotees fast during Navratri, abstaining from different food groups. These commonly include flours, grains like wheat and rice, legumes, lentils, and non-vegetable foods. Instead, certain foods, like sabudana and potatoes, are permitted in the vrat diet. But while vrat is for spiritual devotion, it’s also important to ensure your vrat diet is healthy.

Often, vrat meals include potatoes and sabudana, both of which are high in carbs.

ALSO READ: Planning to fast this Navratri? Doctor shares 5 tips for people with diabetes and hypertension

Nutritionist Kiran Kukreja shared in a September 21 post some common mistakes people may make during the Navratri diet.

1. Too much sabudana

Sabudana is a common ingredient seen in vrat dishes. There are many, from the comfort vrat sabudana khichdi to sabudana dosa, chilla, and more, making this ingredient very versatile. But nutritionist Kiran warned against going overboard with sabudana, saying, “It is mostly starch, which can spike sugar and leave you tired quickly.”

2. Skipping protein balance

Since primarily non-veg, lentils, and legumes are not consumed, there’s a shortage of adequate protein intake. Kiran urged being mindful of this habit because most vrat recipes are carb and fat-heavy, which, according to her, makes “you feel drained quickly.”

3. Thinking vrat chips and namkeens are safe

You will find many snacks labelled Navratri vrat-safe, but it’s vital to stay within limits and not give them a free pass just because they are Navratri-safe.

She shared the reason: “Most packaged vrat snacks are fried in poor quality oils, which defeats the purpose of fasting.”

4. Avoid using potatoes for every meal

Potato is often relied upon heavily as it is permitted during fasting and is one of the most versatile vegetables that can go with everything, from sabudana khichdi to aloo tikki and aloo chips. But making potato the base has the potential to backfire. Why? Kiran explained that vrat recipes are loaded with starch and can cause blood sugar to spike.

5. Not rotating ingredients

The last vrat mistake that the nutritionist pointed out was not rotating ingredients. Because of the limited permissible foods during the fast, one may often eat the same dishes, which can cause nutritional gaps. She added, “Eating the same kuttu cheela or samak rice pulao every day can leave nutrient gaps and trigger more cravings.”

Is your posture putting you at risk of a slipped disc? Orthopedist reveals 4 common mistakes and 7 tips to fix | Health

by jummy84 August 24, 2025
written by jummy84

Not all postures are healthy for your spine. People with a sedentary lifestyle are particularly at risk of a slipped disc due to poor sitting, standing, or walking habits. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr S. D. Abrol, orthopaedics and joint replacement surgeon, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals said, “Our spine has natural curves that distribute weight and absorb shock. Each vertebra is cushioned with soft, gel-like discs that act as shock absorbers. Poor posture places uneven stress on these discs, causing them to weaken and, in some cases, weaken, protrude or herniate commonly known as slip disc.” Also read | Physiotherapist shares five exercises to improve posture and mobility if you sit for long hours

People who lead sedentary lives, run the risk of getting slip disc, because of the way they sit, stand or walk.(Freepik)

Common posture habits that can harm the spine:

1. Slouching while sitting, and hunching over a desk or leaning forward, puts excessive pressure on the lumbar discs, especially the lower back.

2. Constantly looking down at phones or laptops misaligns the spine, increasing stress on cervical and upper back discs.

3. Standing for prolonged hours and leaning on one leg with the weight unevenly distributed strains the lower spine.

4. Improper lifting, such as bending forward from the waist instead of squatting with the knees, forces the discs to bear excess load, making them vulnerable to herniate. Also read | Reasons why we should pay attention to our posture

Early warning signs of slipped disc:

Poor posture may not cause immediate pain, but a slipped disc can lead to:

  • Sharp pain in the lower back or neck
  • Pain radiating to arms or legs (sciatica is common in a lumbar slipped disc)
  • Numbness or tingling sensations
  • Muscle weakness
  • Difficulty in bending, sitting, or walking for long durations

How to do posture correction?

Dr S. D. Abrol shared 7 lifestyle and posture changes that can reduce the risk of getting a slip disc:

1. Sit smart: Use an ergonomic chair with lumbar support, keeping your feet flat on the floor, avoiding crossing legs, and ensuring your screen is at eye level.

2. Strengthen core muscles: A strong core reduces spinal strain. Gentle yoga, pilates, and physiotherapy-guided exercises help build stability.

3. Lift properly: Lift by bending at the knees, keeping objects close to the body, and avoiding bending at the waist.

4. Take regular breaks: Move your body by standing, stretching, or walking every 30–40 minutes if you sit for long hours.

5. Sleep position matters: Choose a medium-firm mattress and sleep on your side with a pillow between the knees, which helps maintain spinal alignment. Also read | Are you sleeping correctly? Spine surgeon shares 5 best positions to sleep

6. Correct forward head posture: Keep your screen at eye level and practice chin-tuck exercises to restore cervical alignment.

7. Seek medical help when needed: Persistent pain may require physiotherapy, medications, or, rarely, surgery.
