Directors Mira Nair and Bijoy Shetty on Changing How the World Sees India

by jummy84 November 15, 2025
written by jummy84

When Nair and Shetty meet over Zoom for a conversation with Vogue, they exchange notes about each other’s work and discuss the tug-of-war between authenticity and representation. Most of all, they talk about resisting the pressure to flatten identities into marketable tropes. For both filmmakers, the challenge and the joy are the same: to show India as it is—in all its messy, irresistible complexity.

Vogue: Mira, you’ve often said that you’re an Indian filmmaker at home in the world. Your films have helped change how the world sees India and its diaspora. Bijoy, your music videos, particularly your recent work with Hanumankind, are strongly rooted in Indian culture. How important is the idea of representation in your work?

Mira Nair: I am not into being an ambassador and saying my country is so wonderful, so rich. I don’t approach filmmaking like a Benetton ad. The point is to plunge into the layers of life in front of you and extricate the humanity that is local to that place, and to do it in a way that is so truthful that it becomes universal. The point is that we’re not islands among ourselves; we are actually all utterly human. That said, as an Indian filmmaker living in New York, then in East Africa, I was always in these places where I was a novelty, where I may have been forced to explain myself. But I grew up with a kind of fierceness—I’m not going to justify myself or give you lessons on my bindi. I refuse to let people who haven’t lived in our streets take our culture and bugger it up.

Bijoy Shetty: Sadly, colonization is in our DNA, where we assume that Western culture is the superior one. But in all honesty, I’ve benefited from that perception. With “Big Dawgs,” a lot of the reaction was because they never thought that an Indian could rap like this. It’s not like this tremendous video with high production value. It’s just the shock of it being an Indian rapper and an Indian music video that has taken it wherever it’s gone. But once that novelty wears off, does your work have a strong enough identity to keep the viewer’s attention? That’s what really matters.

Mira, you’ve spoken about how your primary influence is the street, whether it’s where your stories come from or your tendency to cast non-actors in your films. Bijoy, hip-hop was born on the streets of the Bronx. Can you talk about what the street means to you as a character, and how you look to it for inspiration?

Zohran Mamdani was victorious in winning the New York City mayoral race, but he wouldn’t have gotten there without his family. The politician was raised by his dedicated parents, Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani, who brought Zohran over to the United States when he was a child.

After Andrew Cuomo conceded the June 2025 mayoral Democratic primary election, Zohran thanked his supporters and his family in a speech.

“And as I thank you, I must thank those who brought me into this world,” he began, before his parents joined him on stage. “I must thank my mother and my father, Mira and Mahmood.”

Below, learn all about Zohran’s parents as he prepares to step into his new role as mayor of NYC.

Where Is Zohran Mamdani From?

Zohran was born in Kampala, Uganda. When he was 5, the Mamdani family moved to Cape Town, South Africa, then moved to New York City two years later. Zohran lived in the city for most of his life, having graduated from the Bronx High School of Science, before attending Bowdoin College in Maine.

Mira Nair

Mira is Zohran’s mother and an accomplished Indian-American filmmaker. Among her most notable films are Mississippi Masala, The Namesake, Queen of Katwe, Monsoon Wedding, and Salaam Bombay!, the latter of which received nominations for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and a BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language.

Mira obtained her bachelor’s degree from Harvard University. She was married to her ex-husband, Mitch Epstein, until their divorce in 1987. Later, Mira met her husband, Mahmood, in Uganda while she was doing research for the film Mississippi Masala.

Mahmood Mamdani

Mahmood is an academic, author, political commentator, the Herbert Lehman Professor of Government and a Professor of Anthropology, Political Science and African Studies at Columbia University and the Chancellor of Kampala International University in Uganda.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh, Mahmood obtained his PhD from Harvard University. He married his wife, Mira, in 1991.

Who Is Zohran Mamdani’s Wife?

Zohran is married to his wife, Rama Duwaji, a Syrian illustrator and animator. The couple met on Hinge and exchanged vows in early 2025 in a civil ceremony in New York City. Zohran has called Rama the love of his life and thanked her in his victory speech after the Democratic mayoral primary election in June 2025.

Does Zohran Mamdani Have Kids?

Mira Rajput Kapoor Slams Diwali Crackers Amid Toxic Air Crisis: ‘Stop Normalising This’

by jummy84 October 22, 2025
written by jummy84

7In a powerful and resonant Instagram message this week, actress and entrepreneur Mira Rajput Kapoor called out the ongoing practice of bursting firecrackers during Diwali — at a time when Indian cities like Delhi and Mumbai are grappling with dangerously poor air quality. The post, which unapologetically highlighted the hypocrisy of ‘environmental’ pledges versus practised behaviour, struck a chord with thousands.

A No-Holds-Barred Call

Mira used her Instagram Stories to urge fans to rethink their festive habits. She wrote: “Why are we still bursting crackers? It’s not okay even if it’s ‘just for the kids to see once’ or ‘we’re just doing it once for them to have the experience.’ Neither is it okay for your pataka aesthetic to hold a phuljhadi for the gram. Let’s please stop normalising this.”

With air-quality indices hitting the “severe” range in Delhi and “very poor” in Mumbai, Mira’s timing was hard to miss. She added: “Say no to crackers cannot be the poster you get your kids to make for Earth Day and then forget about it when Diwali comes along. AQI news is not just for the next Instagram story — it’s the air our children breathe. And what’s sad is, despite the privilege, education, awareness and affluence, what lacks is common sense. So no, I won’t send my kids to watch while you’ll have some cracker fun. Please stop.”

When Awareness Clashes with Tradition

The post reads like a direct punch to the festive status quo. For many, Diwali isn’t just about lights and sweets — it’s fireworks, family laughter and all. But in 2025, as stubble burning, pollution-filled winter skies and clogged lungs become the backdrop to celebrations, Mira’s words highlight a broader reckoning: Can tradition stand up to consequence?

Her message isn’t about denying joy or festivity — it’s about asking whether culture should override conscience. If the air around us is choking, is bursting fireworks still “harmless fun”?

A Personal Note Amid Warnings

Mira isn’t lunging from a moral high ground unreachable by most. As the wife of actor Shahid Kapoor and the co-founder of skincare brand Akind Beauty and wellness retreat Dhun Wellness, she sits at a place of influence — which also means her words carry weight. She put both back in their Diwali post, while making it clear: her concern is structural, not seasonal.

With two young children—daughter Misha and son Zain—Mira’s appeal touches a parental nerve: the air we hand down is just as important as the traditions we pass on.

Social Media Echoes

As expected, the Instagram message lit up feeds. Many applauded her for speaking up:

“Yes Mira! Finally someone saying what needs to be said.” “This needs repeating every year.”
Few voices pushed back, suggesting that fireworks were “part of tradition” and harmless if done responsibly.

Perhaps that’s precisely her point: “responsible fireworks” is no longer enough when the air is turning hostile.

Looking Beyond One Night

Mira’s post asks more than whether you burst a firecracker this year. It points to a pattern: We sign petitions for Earth Day, we click selfies under lights, we get the kids to draw anti-pollution posters. And then December skies fill with smoke again. She wants to connect the dots.

When she says, “It’s not just for the next Instagram story—it’s the air our children breathe,” she flips the narrative. The question becomes: if an image ready for social display doesn’t translate into action, what’s its value?

The Bigger Picture

Bollywood stars draw headlines for glitz and festivals. But here, Mira Rajput’s voice shifts the focus from spectacle to sustainability. Her words resonate because they come not from a contest of who’s brighter, but from a shared recognition: if we light up the night, we must also clear the air for the morning.

In a year where “quiet Diwali” is becoming more of a necessity than a choice, her reminder is simple: we can still celebrate — but maybe not at the cost of our lungs.

As millions across the country text “Happy Diwali,” Mira Rajput asks: “Happy for whom, exactly?”

And that pause, that question, may just be the spark worth lighting this year.

Mira Mikati Spring 2026 Ready-to-Wear Collection

by jummy84 October 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Mira Mikati is her florist’s best customer. “It makes or breaks my day, so I go early in the morning two or three times a week before Pilates class,” the designer said over tea at Toraya during Paris Fashion Week. She paused a beat, and added: “Once I am done with fashion, maybe I will open a flower shop with a Japanese tea place and sweets, because we don’t have that in London.”

Until Café Mira takes shape, the designer offered up a flowerbed of a collection for spring. Blooms sprouted in 3D on sweaters, a belt, and a white sundress; as sequined pansies on jammies; as bouquets of hollyhock, daisies, anemones, and magnolias arranged herbarium-style on a “Fleuriste” sweatshirt featuring some of her perennial favorites; and as negative space as laser cut-outs on a grass green shorts and top ensemble. A denim jacket had a flower stall embroidered on its back, and even a trench coat had little patches of flowers, butterflies, hearts, and clouds.

Mikati is leaning into knitwear this season, for example a handmade crochet cardigan with patches or a joyful mashup of rainbow stripes, as on a rainbow skirt turned on the bias with beaded straps (“when it’s high quality, even when it’s hot you don’t fry,” she noted). Also kawaii: an orange cashmere sweater embroidered with a little bunny wagashi like the ones served over at her favorite meeting spot in Paris. But it was the back of one striped shirt that best summed up the Mikati way of life: “Stay close to the people that feel like sunshine.”

With all this color swirling about, it’s easy to overlook the fact that Mikati has added a new hue for spring, showcased as an otherwise unadorned sundress in the very last image here. “I’ve never used red, but it’s starting to grow on me,” she said. “I find it glamorous and a really big statement, so for the first time I thought, why not?” That was the kind of one-and-done piece that makes vacation packing a breeze.

Mira Rajput Opened Up On Facing Isolation From Friends After Getting Married To Shahid Kapoor And Having Babies

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Bollywood’s most loved celebrity couple, Shahid Kapoor and Mira Rajput, got married in the year 2015. At that time, while Shahid was 34 years old, Mira was 21 years old. In the year 2016, Mira gave birth to a daughter, and in 2018, she became the mother of son Zain. Mira Rajput talked about arranged marriage and its initial years in a podcast some time ago, and how she felt isolated because she was distanced from her friends.

Mira Rajput

In a recent podcast, Mira Rajput said that when she was newly married to Shahid Kapoor, she was isolated. She and Shahid were in different phases of life, due to which she often felt like this. Mira had said that while settling down in married life and starting a family, she also had to struggle a lot to maintain connections with friends. While Mira Rajput was seeing her friends pursuing higher studies, travelling, or taking a gap, she herself was focusing on married life and starting a family.

Mira Rajput

Let us tell you that Mira had said that when she used to see her friends, she used to wish that she could also do everything that her friends were doing. Mira Rajput also said that she found it very difficult to maintain contact with friends after marriage. According to her, initially, her friends could not understand why she was in so little contact, but later, when they themselves came into the same phase, they understood Mira’s situation.

Mira Rajput

Mira Rajput said, ‘For a long time I kept thinking that my friends have gone for higher studies or are travelling. Life is going on perfectly well. You are changing the city. There is a family, there are children. I could not talk to friends that much. Earlier, they could not understand, and their reaction was, what? You got married and left from here? Does it mean that you have forgotten us? Then, on hearing this from friends, I used to tell them that I have not forgotten them, but am really busy.’
