Cardiothoracic surgeon says ‘every minute without defibrillation drops survival by about 10%,’ explains how AEDs work

Defibrillators are life-saving devices designed to restore the heart’s normal rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest. They are widely available in schools, airports, gyms, and public spaces – but despite their accessibility, most people don’t know how to use them. However, even basic knowledge and quick action in an emergency can make the difference between life and death.

Dr Jeremy London, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon with more than 25 years of clinical experience, is raising awareness about the crucial role defibrillators play in saving lives during sudden cardiac arrests. In an Instagram video shared on October 22, the cardiologist breaks down how defibrillators work, emphasising that swift action during a sudden collapse can be lifesaving.

How does AED work?

According to Dr London, an AED, or automated external defibrillator, is a simple device commonly found in airports, gyms, schools, and other public spaces – yet most people pass by without a second thought. In critical moments, however, knowing how to use one can literally be the difference between life and death.

The cardiologist explains, “An AED doesn’t restart the heart like you see in the movies. It works by delivering a quick electrical shock that depolarises the heart muscle, stopping the chaotic rhythm just long enough for the heart’s natural pacemaker to reset and start beating normally again. It’s used for sudden cardiac arrest when the heart’s electrical system goes haywire and stops pumping blood.”

Knowing how to use AED can save lives

Dr London highlights that time is of the essence when someone experiences sudden cardiac arrest, hence every second matters. He stresses, “Every minute without defibrillation drops survival by about 10%. The good news, AEDs are fully automated and talk you through each step, where to place the pads, when to stand clear, and if a shock is actually needed.”

You don’t need to be a doctor to use an AED – “You just have to know where the AED is and have the courage to actually use it. Because when someone collapses, seconds matter. And you might be the one who saves their life,” emphasises Dr London.

“What are the odds of that, right? We deeply apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused.” Wow. Another remarkably clever, ingeniously shot new short film from filmmaker Jon Walkup. After recently premiering at a film festival, the 5-minute short is now available online to watch below. A Minute on Each Side is about James making a microwave burrito for dinner. But there is a bit more to it than that… Here’s the intro: A man’s life falls apart in the time it takes to microwave a burrito. Starring Jake Lewis as James, and director Jon Walkup as the voice on the other end of the phone. It’s also the winner of an Audience Award from the 2025 Nashville Film Festival. Walkup also produced a few other worth watching shorts The Cowboy & The Samurai and Such Good Friends which we’ve featured, and he directed Big Fun. He’s getting better and better with every new film he makes. And this is another impressive dark comedy – watch below.

A Minute on Each Side - Short Film

Thanks to Jon for the tip on this film debuting online. Brief intro via YouTube: “In this comedy-thriller, a man’s life falls apart in real time while a frozen burrito cooks in the microwave. Shot in a single five-minute take from inside the microwave, the film turns an everyday convenience into a front-row seat to a personal nightmare.” A Minute on Each Side is directed by up-and-coming indie filmmaker Jon Walkup, director of many other short films & music videos (producer on The Cowboy & The Samurai, Such Good Friends), as well as his first feature Big Fun a few years ago. You can also follow him on IG @jonwalkup. Written by Jon Walkup & Bri Klaproth. Produced by Bri Klaproth, Rachel Rambaldi, Jon Walkup. With cinematography by Cooper Shine. This just premiered at the 2025 Nashville Film Festival in their “Graveyard Shorts” section. For more info on the film, visit YouTube. To enjoy more shorts (including animation), click here. Fitness trainer who lost 20 pounds in 4 months says doing this ‘2 minute trick after dinner’ can help you burn more fat

by jummy84 September 13, 2025

While the way forward from being overweight or obese may seem to be exercise or dieting, the reasoning may be far more complex, ingrained in how your body processes food and, in turn, manages vital hormones like insulin. Weight loss is not all rocket science, as the solution is about embracing smart habits, one of them being walking after meals.

Your body is less likely to store fat if the blood sugar levels are not high,(Shutterstock)

Christine Stines, who lost 20 pounds (9 kg) in four months, often shares weight loss tips based on her experience. In an August 12 Instagram post, she revealed: “Fat loss becomes so much easier just by doing this two-minute trick after dinner. ”

What goes on when you eat something?

Let’s first zero in on the missing piece of weight management and how it all revolves around how the body handles sugar and insulin. Christine explained the process, “So when you eat, your blood sugar naturally rises and in response your pancreas releases insulin, which is the hormone that carries that out of your blood sugar and tells and tells your body to store this as energy.”

But here’s where the problem lies, as the fitness trainer highlighted that when insulin levels are high, fat burning stops, and if the body keeps producing insulin, due to frequent snacking, high stress, poor sleep, hormonal changes, or inactivity, it can lead to insulin resistance.

But how is the blood sugar management related to fat burning? She added, “Your body needs more insulin to do the same job that keeps you stuck in fat storage mode twenty-four seven, even if you are eating really healthy and clean, and the more fat you have, the more your body craves sugary food, which then makes this even harder.”

How to lose belly fat?

The belly fat is stubborn, more so if it stems from hormonal imbalances, like insulin problems. (Shutterstock)

Belly fat is often the result of blood sugar problems. She revealed that there are two ways to go about dropping belly fat. One is limiting glucose and insulin spikes, and the other is making sure you remain sensitive to insulin, so when it does go up, it comes back down quickly, and you can get right back to burning fat.

Christine cited a study published by the Journal of Sports Medicine from 2022. The findings suggest that just a two to five-minute walk after meals can lower post-meal blood glucose by up to 30 per cent. While standing is also good, the benefits are not extensive.

So why does a brief walk after meals work? Christine revealed, “It works because your muscles act like a sponge, and when they move, they pull glucose out of your bloodstream without needing extra insulin, and if it gets stored in your muscles, it doesn’t get stored in fat cells. So less blood sugar equals less insulin, equals less fat, equals more fat burning.”

But if you think you need to hit a specific step count or hop on a treadmill, the fitness trainer explained that a simple walk works just as well, as it signals the body that it’s active and doesn’t need to store extra fat. So you don’t need to really store fat.

Ameesha Patel On Why She Couldn’t Play The Village Belle In Aamir Khan’s Iconic Lagaan
Bollywood

Did You Know Ameesha Patel Was Rejected From Aamir Khan’s Lagaan At The Last Minute For THIS Reason?

Ameesha Patel On Why She Couldn’t Play The Village Belle In Aamir Khan’s Iconic Lagaan ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Ameesha Patel is one of the most loved actresses in Bollywood. With a career spanning over two decades, she has managed to carve a niche for herself in showbiz. Let’s look back at the time when Ameesha reflected on her acting journey while talking about her role in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha and its box office clash with Aamir Khan starrer Lagaan in 2001. Read on to know more.

Ameesha Patel Says She Was The Correct Choice For Gadar: Ek Prem Katha

In an interview with Bollywood Buble, Ameesha Patel revealed that she was rejected from Aamir Khan’s Lagaan for being ‘too educated.’ She shared, “During Lagaan, I was finalized for the film. The dates were fixed, and everything was set. The reason I was chosen for Gadar was because of my education, inherent sophistication, a certain posture, and body language. And my background is coming from a political family. Sakina’s character, which in real life also was a background for Ameesha, was an educated girl, English-educated girl, someone who went to an English school. So, for all these things, I was the correct choice for Gadar.”

Ameesha Patel On Being Rejected For Lagaan

“I got selected for Lagaan, and I was shooting for Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai in New Zealand when my secretary called me and said that Lagaan dates were shifted for Gadar. I said, ‘Why?’ He said, ‘They don’t feel you’re right for the casting for no apparent reason, but she has to play a village belle, and you don’t look convincing enough for that.’ I looked too educated for that, too well exposed to the world, which I was. I was well-read and well-travelled from a very young age, and I was foreign-educated,” Ameesha continued.

Ameesha Patel Praised Gracy Singh’s Work In Lagaan

However, destiny had its own plans and the role was eventually played by Gracy Singh.“So, maybe my director felt that would interfere with getting the characterization on-screen. Of course, if given a chance, I’m sure I would have worked around it and done a good job. But no hard feelings because Gracy Singh did a fabulous job,” Ameesha Patel concluded.

French biochemist shares the ‘easiest way to reduce blood sugar spikes’: Do this simple 5–10 minute exercise after meals | Health

Managing blood sugar levels can be a daily challenge, especially for people with diabetes or those at risk. Jessie Inchauspé, French biochemist and New York Times bestselling author, shares in her August 25 Instagram post how simple techniques like ‘calf raises’ can help reduce blood sugar spikes and support better glucose control. (Also read: Fitness coach shares the best exercise to regulate blood sugar and lower diabetes risk: ‘Building muscle is key’ )

Simple calf raises help lower blood sugar spikes after meals, says Biochemist.

How to do calf raises to lower glucose

“Just eaten a donut or a big bowl of pasta? Try this: Feet on the ground, lift your heels up and down. This makes your soleus muscle (hiding in your calf) contract, helping soak up the glucose from your bloodstream. And boom, smaller glucose spike,” Jessie wrote in the caption.

In a video, Jessie explains, “The soluup pushup or the calf raise, imagine you’re at your desk, at work, or at school, wherever you’ve eaten something really high in carbs. Here is the easiest and most discreet way you can lower the glucose spike at that meal. You simply put your feet on the ground and go up and down, keeping your shoes on, for 5–10 minutes.”

Jessie shares the benefits of this exercise: “Your calves contain a muscle called the soleus, which studies have shown is especially good at soaking up glucose from the bloodstream after we eat.”

What are the benefits

Quoting the study, she explains, “The study, called ‘A Potent Physiological Method to Magnify and Sustain Cellulose Oxidative Metabolism Improves Glucose and Lipid Regulation,’ asked participants to do calf pushups or raises for five hours. That’s a lot, of course, but here’s what they found: five hours of calf raises reduced post-meal glucose spikes by 52% and lowered extra insulin levels by 60%.”

She clarifies, “We don’t have to do this for 5 hours. Even doing 10 minutes can have a strong impact. In my own test, I compared a pain au chocolat with and without 10 minutes of calf raises. The glucose spike was much smaller with the exercise, and it’s very discreet. It’s very, very easy. I recommend you test this out.”
