There’s a tendency, from the usual suspects, to cry about the Duchess of Sussex’s lack of success in between her massively successful As Ever product drops. Those people have just decided, without evidence, that As Ever is not doing well, or that Meghan’s brand is in shambles. When really, the progression of As Ever has been quite organic and massively successful from the word go. Yesterday, Meghan launched As Ever’s holiday collection. People could buy a gift box full of multiple fruit spreads (jams), new jars of honey, a Spiced Cider mulling kit, a Hot Toddy mulling kit, and significantly (for me!) there was finally a restock on the much-loved raspberry jam. If you buy the jam gift box, you can also try a new flavor: strawberry!!

But people are talking about two other new items on offer: As Ever candles. One candle is No. 084, which is Meghan’s birthday (August 4) and the other candle is No. 519, named after the Sussexes’ wedding date. Both candles are $64. Now… I’m a candle person, I burn candles by my desk as I work/write most days. It’s calming and I love the scent. Because I’m burning candles for at least four hours every day, I do tend to buy the less expensive ones. I’ve experimented with some of the more expensive ones here and there and they’re nice, but so are the “cheaper” ones if you know enough to go by certain brand names. Basically, I gulped at the price and decided maybe I should do without. I did order a jam gift box and a raspberry restock though. Please let me know if the candles smell nice! I got some FOMO when I saw how many people were buying the candles and if they’re still in stock in a week, I might order one (the No. 084).

And yes, I know that As Ever candles are in the “nice candle” price range, if you’re comparing them to Jo Malone or what have you. Stop calling me broke-ass! I’m not broke, I’m just too cheap to spend $60-plus dollars on a candle! There’s a difference! Still, I really do want to hear about how the candles smell and if people like them.

The Duchess of Sussex’s As Ever brand is doing a product drop today, in a short time. The items will apparently come online at noon on the East coast, 9 am on the West coast. I had my fingers crossed for a raspberry jam restock and I was hoping for some interesting new products. I didn’t expect Meghan to venture into candles! And mulled wine! And more! Women’s Wear Daily got a preview of the new As Ever items:

Meghan Markle has introduced the first holiday collection from her lifestyle brand, As Ever, marking the label’s expansion since its launch this past spring. Available exclusively on asever.com, the curated range includes candles, California-harvested honey, artisanal fruit spreads, mulling spice kits, and a limited-edition sparkling wine from Napa Valley.

The collection is inspired by the spirit of gifting and gatherings, reflecting the brand’s focus on home, celebration and everyday ritual. Among the highlights are two hand-poured candles crafted in California. Signature Candle No. 519, named after Markle’s wedding date (May 19) with Prince Harry, features Moroccan mint and white tea notes, while Candle No. 084 draws from her Aug. 4 birthday and carries hints of sandalwood, lotus and poppy. Both are housed in ceramic vessels and inspired by personal memories.

Also new this season is the 2021 Vintage Napa Valley Brut ($89), produced using the traditional méthode champenoise from pinot noir and chardonnay grapes. The sparkling offers crisp notes of green apple, pear and citrus, presented in a matte black bottle embossed with gold details.

Gift-ready provisions round out the line. The Fruit Spread Gift Set ($42) includes raspberry, orange marmalade, and a new strawberry variety made with simple, fruit-based recipes. The Honey Duo Gift Set ($62) contains Wildflower and Orange Blossom honeys sourced entirely from California apiaries, while Sage Honey with Honeycomb ($32) offers a raw, textured alternative tied to the herbs grown in Markle’s own garden.

Finally, two seasonal mulling kits — Spiced Cider and Hot Toddy ($16 each) — blend cinnamon, citrus peel, and ginger for home entertaining.

You don’t understand, I’m THRILLED that she’s doing candles now. More candles! Everyone loves a candle and so many people give candles as gifts. I’m sure the honey-enjoyers will love the new honey offerings, and I’m sure that’s what will sell out the fastest too. Friendships will be broken over that honey, I’m sure – people are always fighting over it! The fact that Meghan is now on her fourth wine drop is amazing, and it shows that she has a real “taste” for what people want to drink. Are we only able to get the raspberry jam as part of a gift set? OMG. I can’t wait to buy some of this stuff.

Update: $64 for a little candle???? Nah. But raspberry jam is FINALLY back in stock! And some of those boxes will make nice Christmas presents.

For the past nine months, I’ve complimented the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s improved communications strategy. After five years, they finally freed themselves from the “never complain, never explain” bullsh-t strategy of dealing with the daily onslaught of false reports about every part of their lives. Well, late last week, the Daily Mail gleefully reported that Meghan had “lost her tenth publicist in five years.” Much like the number of bathrooms in the Sussexes’ Montecito palace, the number of staffers “lost” is always inflated by the British press. The latest story was about Emily Robinson, who used to work for Netflix, specifically doing publicity for The Crown. She only worked with Meghan for about five months and then moved on. Now we know why, because of the responsiveness of the Sussexes’ comms team:

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s team is seeing some major changes. Five months after Emily Robinson was named the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s director of communications, she has decided to bow out of the role.

“Ms. Robinson oversaw project-based work for a very successful season of With Love, Meghan and additional support for the production company,” a spokesperson for Meghan told E! News in an Oct. 24 statement. “She did an excellent job and completed these projects with great success.”

Indeed, Emily—who was previously Netflix’s senior director of publicity for eight years until May 2024—had proven to be a shining diamond in the Sussex crown. After all, thanks to the success of seasons one and two of With Love, Meghan, the Suits alum was able to explore a new chapter in her lifestyle series.

“The holiday special is coming out in November,” she shared at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit earlier this month. “It’s a really good one.”

So, Robinson was hired on a temporary basis and her work was focused on With Love, Meghan. I actually suspect that Robinson leaving that job says more about Meghan’s plans for WLM more than anything else, you know? Robinson leaving tells me that Meghan probably doesn’t have plans to film another season of WLM right away. She indicated as much during her Fortune Q&A session, where she basically made it sound like WLM is a huge time commitment and her focus needs to be on As Ever. In any case, the British tabloids certainly made a mountain out of a molehill. Gee, I wonder why they all decided to attack Meghan after a week of ghastly headlines about Prince Andrew, Jeffrey Epstein and an incompetent, dithering king.

Speaking of As Ever, Meghan’s been teasing a new product drop on the 28th (Tuesday). She posted this on her Stories… is that tomato sauce? It looks tomato-y and not raspberry-esque. Yes, I’m still pining away for the raspberry jam! But if Meghan is selling tomato sauce (???) then I will try it. I love tomatoes.

It seems the British media is done talking about Prince Andrew’s depravity and all of the crimes he’s committed. They’ve successfully deflected everything to “should Andrew be kicked out of Royal Lodge” and “look, the Windsors are doing another dumb half-measure to punish Andrew.” Another key part of Operation Deflect From Andrew is the British press’s favorite standard: attacking the Duke and Duchess of Sussex no matter what. Throughout this week, Mail columnists have been trying to keep up the attacks, even as it became abundantly clear that the monarchy has done the most to protect a serial sexual predator for decades. “But Meghan went to Paris,” they cried. “But Meghan’s business is struggling, we swear!”

Well, the Mail’s Alison Boshoff has a new exclusive: Meghan lost another staffer! Back in June, the Sussexes did a major housecleaning on their comms team, letting go of some of their comms people and hiring Emily Robinson, who used to work for Netflix (and did publicity for The Crown). I said at the time that Meredith Maines – the comms guru who was hired in February – was probably behind all of the June streamlining. Well, now it looks like Emily Robinson has left the Sussexes’ employ!

The Duchess of Sussex has parted company with her tenth publicist in just five years after a big name she poached from Netflix quit after just three months. Emily Robinson joined Harry and Meghan’s team as director of communications in June, but she has already jumped ship.

Ms Robinson was always a controversial hire as she had worked on The Crown for years – a show which aired a number of damaging narratives about the Royal Family. The final series included scenes in which the ‘ghost’ of Princess Diana appeared to speak to The Queen and Prince Charles, which many found insensitive.

One friend of LA-based Robinson, who built up a reputation as a ‘tough cookie’ at Netflix, said: ‘It was her decision. She left a few weeks ago. She’s not a quitter, so things must have been pretty horrible for her to go.’

Ms Robinson’s LinkedIn profile does not currently include any reference to having worked with the couple, but other roles which she has held are listed.

Ms Robinson is at least the tenth publicist to leave the employ of Meghan and Harry since they left the UK for California five years ago (although two former publicists, James Holt and Miranda Barbot, have been promoted into non-PR roles). Remaining on their team are Liam Maguire, director of communications in Europe, and Meredith Maines, their chief communications officer. They met the King’s press secretary, Tobyn Andreae, this summer – which is thought to have paved the way for Prince Harry to briefly see his father last month.

The couple have suffered numerous PR disasters, most recently the duchess’s surprise trip to Paris Fashion Week.

She was like, no, I cannot have my client getting so much attention at Paris Fashion Week! It’s far more likely that Robinson left for a better job, or maybe there’s another restructure happening within Archewell, especially with Meghan focusing so much on As Ever. I’m defending the Sussexes’ comms team FINALLY because this year, they’ve really turned things around. Some of us had begged them for years to be more responsive, and to not allow these evil f–king narratives to fester unchallenged. And this year, we saw those changes. I believe it’s because of Maines as well.

Prince Harry’s lawsuit against the Daily Mail will go to trial early next year in the UK. Harry is not the sole plaintiff, but you wouldn’t know that from the coverage of the pretrial motions and hearings. You wouldn’t know it from the way the Mail has been waging an unhinged hate campaign against Harry and Meghan as well. Over the weekend, the Mail Plus published a particularly psychotic piece from Alison Boshoff, all about how Harry is totally baffled as to why his wife would have gone to the Balenciaga show in Paris, and how Meghan’s trip caused deep fissures in their marriage. The whole piece is wildly offensive and full of lies, but the part which aggravated me the most is that almost all of the quotes are attributed to “friends of Harry” or “friends of the couple,” and the quotes are completely trashing Meghan. Like… if the Mail feels it necessary to smear the Sussexes this wildly, so be it, but just admit that the quotes are coming from royalists, palace courtiers and friends/associates of the left-behind royals. Some lowlights from this bullsh-t exclusive:

Sussex friends are agog! A week on from that surprise appearance at Paris Fashion Week, and sources close to Meghan and Prince Harry remain agog. The British friends of the Prince characterise her appearance at the event as ‘beyond belief’, the Californian end are more expressive and say things such as: ‘This was f***ing wild!’

Meghan & Harry are totally miserable!? More disquietingly, though, sources close to the Duke and Duchess have indicated to me that Meghan’s choice of the French capital for her latest ‘relaunch’ has caused them deep concern. Certainly, their appearance on Thursday night in New York, where they were named ‘Humanitarians of the Year’ at the Project Healthy Minds gala will not have helped. They arrived hand in hand, with Meghan in an Armani power suit. But although the former actress shot a number of soupy glances in her husband’s direction, he looked largely furious, and his occasional smiles were tight little grimaces. Granted, when on stage they were talking about their ‘crusade’ against online harm to children, but both looked utterly miserable.

Meghan posted an IG Story a mile away from l’Alma: Extraordinarily, this was a parallel journey to that made by Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, who died in the tunnel of the same Pont de l’Alma bridge, on her final night in August 1997. Some have told me of their shock at the seeming tactlessness of using this route for the Duchess’s publicity purposes. Because Paris, to put it mildly, is not a neutral location for Harry. One perfectly placed source says they are ‘so astonished’ at all this because both Meghan and Harry have turned down numerous invitations to attend events in Paris over recent years. The reason given, I’m told, is always the same – that city’s association with the tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales. A source told me there was always a hard line from him – a total, blanket ‘No’. Harry, they said, would consistently make it clear that he would not go to Paris, because of his mother. I’m told by the same source: ‘Meghan would explain when asked: ‘I cannot go to Paris because of H’s mom.’

Meghan knew what she was doing! When it comes to Meghan, say a number of former friends, nothing happens by accident. One friend of Harry’s told me: ‘She’s driving around in that city where his mother died. She knows exactly what she is doing!’ Their view is that the visit said much about Meghan’s ‘need’ for attention, and they wonder what’s going on with her and Harry. One said: ‘Harry must have been sick from trauma and worry. I simply cannot understand it.’

Why would Harry join Meghan at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit? It remains to be seen if Harry puts in an appearance on Tuesday next week, when Meghan is due to speak at Fortune magazine’s Most Powerful Women event in Washington, DC. One suspects not. One associate said: ‘They want different things and there are times when it is really not great. I mean, really not great at all.’

Meghan’s interviews: A source tells me: ‘The Bloomberg interview [in August] was odd because it felt as if Meghan had no idea what she was talking about. She said that everyone associates her with fashion, and that’s not the case. She has given quite a few print interviews in her career and more often than not they are a disaster. It’s not her best medium, she doesn’t tend to come across very well.’ Despite this, a well placed source says the word is she is currently involved in putting together a cover for a glossy magazine, maybe Vogue. An obvious explanation, then, would be that the Paris trip was necessary for that media commitment. Perhaps the cover story is ‘Meghan takes Paris’ – and the idea of that kind of prestigious media hit was simply too tempting for her to overthink Harry’s feelings.

As Ever is struggling too, lolz: But away from her marriage, where does the Duchess’s Paris sojourn leave her main business concern, As Ever? According to one friend: ‘At the moment she is literally lost because the whole jam making business did not work out in the way she thought it would. Nobody has seen any figures, but I don’t think they are that good. I know they just released a Sauvignon Blanc, but it’s not going to make her lots of money because Netflix owns the business.’ I understand that mid-range retail stores Target, Bristol Farms and Williams Sonoma have been discussed already.

Meghan wants to be financially support her family, how ghastly: A friend reveals: ‘She just wants to make money, she wants to be a billionaire. The trouble is, she doesn’t know how.’ And you have to wonder – is her husband Harry on the same page?

Do you see what I’m saying about the attribution on the quotes? This piece was likely commissioned by Kensington Palace. It’s William and his courtiers, not Harry, who are salty about Meghan’s trip to Paris and Meghan’s business success and Meghan’s possible Vogue cover (which I really hope is the one true thing in this piece). The part about “she is literally lost because the whole jam making business did not work out in the way she thought it would” tells you everything you need to know about the lack of accuracy in this piece – As Ever’s first three product drops sold out immediately. She’s had to vastly increase her inventory, and she could literally just do jam and wine and she would be able to support her family financially for the rest of her life.

As for all of the hand-wringing about Paris and the Sussexes’ appearance in NYC… just… lmao. The desperation to convince people to not believe their eyes. No, really, Harry was grumpy, he doesn’t want to be around Meghan! Meanwhile, Harry was groping her ass to the point where she was like, babe, stop, we’re in public. I also don’t buy that Harry thinks Paris is off-limits for himself or his wife. He was almost definitely fine with Meghan making the trip.

Their marriage is struggling, the British media swears!!!

In 2016-17, the Windsors did the most to discourage Prince Harry and then-Meghan Markle’s relationship. The Windsors and Middletons began their character-assassination campaign against Meghan in particular in the fall of 2016. Prince William was discouraging Harry from getting serious with “the actress.” Charles panicked and claimed that he couldn’t “afford” Meghan. Once engaged, Meghan and Harry withstood a serious effort to ruin their engagement and wedding, including that bullsh-t with Meg’s father. Once H&M were married, the royal establishment, aristocracy and British establishment convinced themselves that Meghan was a “degree wife” who could easily be pushed out of her marriage and the country with a wall-to-wall smear campaign. William in particular was convinced that he could physically attack Harry in an attempt to force H&M to divorce. Harry disrupted all of these machinations by taking his wife far away from those horrible people. In their California exile, the Sussexes have been targeted the entire time. Harry and Meghan are fine. They’re probably the most successful royal marriage in a century. But according to Paul Burrell, Harry and Meghan are going to break up any day now.

A former royal butler believes Meghan Markle wanted a ‘starring role’ in the British Royal Family – and her marriage to Prince Harry is doomed to fail. Paul Burrell has lifted the lid on royal life in an interview on the Daily Mail Royals Channel.

‘I don’t think Meghan ever considered being a supporting actress,’ Burrell said. ‘I think she wanted to be a star.’ In his new book The Royal Insider: My Life with the Queen, the King and Princess Diana, Burrell writes: ‘She wanted to be the star but she would always have second billing to the future Queen Catherine. While Meghan wanted celebrity status, she did not want to conform to the rules of the House of Windsor. Being American, she struggled to understand the culture of the Royal establishment with its rules and protocols.’

Later in the bombshell book, Burrell writes that the downfall of Harry and Meghan’s marriage is ‘inevitable’.

Expanding on this in the interview with the Daily Mail, he said: ‘I think the two cultures which came together in the marriage of Harry and Meghan, there is a fault line down the middle of it and I feel that will crack one day. Think about it. Harry came from this very busy world of the Royal Family with lots to do. Even in his spare time, he could play polo and do whatever he wanted. He is sat in Montecito, twiddling his thumbs, thinking: “What do I do next? What is my role? Where is my work?”‘

Burrell said he believes this mentality will ‘wear thin’ for the Duke of Sussex.

‘As Meghan rises in Netflix firmament into whatever she will do,’ he said, ‘I think it won’t be enough for Meghan and it won’t be enough for Harry. She will just go off and her next step is a billionaire because she’s got millions so why not step up to a billionaire?’

As we discussed last week, it seems like Burrell’s new book is almost exclusively about Harry and Meghan, two people he barely knows. He knew Harry when he was a child and that’s it. He’s never met Meghan, never spoken to her, never been in the same room with her. What is Burrell getting out of this ham-fisted attempt at a royal book again? Because this sh-t is just like reading aggregated Daily Mail stories. Anyway, Harry is fine, Meghan is fine, and Harry clearly has plenty to do. This caricature they have of California Harry, bored and lounging around the house, has nothing to do with the reality. In fact, I’m pretty sure this is all one big projection about the “other” couple. Prince William is the one who is bored and lazy, William and Kate’s marriage is in shambles, Willy is the one who will “crack.”

This week, I finally got my “replacement” apricot jam from As Ever, as well as the two bottles of orange marmalade jam I ordered in the most recent As Ever product drop. I’ve tried both flavors and I prefer the apricot, for what it’s worth, but I’m still dreaming of a raspberry restock. The most recent product drop was coordinated alongside the premiere of With Love, Meghan’s second season. It feels like the Duchess of Sussex has finally worked out the supply lines for As Ever, right? Meghan’s biggest haters have been screaming about how the most recent products haven’t sold out, but that’s a good thing – Meghan and her team have finally got enough in stock to ensure that people can buy her products whenever they want, like a real functional business. While the scarcity business model works for a time, when you’re selling jams, wine and crepe mixes, people want to buy products whenever they need/want them. It’s bad business to have a sold-out product line for months at a time.

One of the most bizarre conversations happening around As Ever is the “why doesn’t Netflix sell Meghan’s products in their Netflix shops??” Because As Ever is a stand-alone thing? Well, that answer is not good enough for the Mail, or Richard Osman and Marina Hyde.

Meghan Markle’s tie-up with Netflix to sell her jam, pancake mix and flower sprinkles is already ‘petering out’ after just seven months, it was claimed today. The Duchess of Sussex’s As Ever brand is partnered with the streaming giant but none of her products are listed on the Netflix website. Netflix is also opening its first bricks-and-mortar stores in the US later this year so fans of shows such as KPop Demon Hunters, Squid Games and Stranger Things have the chance to buy merchandise. But there are growing doubts that As Ever products will be sold on the shelves despite her formal partnership with the streamer only being announced in February, the Daily Mail understands.

Speaking on her The Rest is Entertainment podcast with Richard Osman, journalist Marina Hyde suggested that Netflix is quietly dropping Meghan’s As Ever.

‘Meghan’s jam is supposedly for sale in the Netflix store. But they don’t even have a tab for her show’, she said. ‘She has gone into a product partnership with them but I’m afraid that will just peter out’.

It came after Meghan and Harry agreed a new TV deal with Netflix but experts said it was a ‘downgrade’ on their previous $100million contract, marking a loosening of ties between them. Her second season of With Love Meghan is only at 136 in the Netflix chart, under two weeks after its release. And it also appears that the Duchess of Sussex, 44, has quietly shut down her ShopMy website, which sold items from £20 ($26) grey t-shirts to £1,600 ($2,000) silk gowns.

The As Ever range was widely expected to be featured in the Philadelphia and Dallas branches of Netflix House, the streaming giant’s first physical stores. But a Netflix source has insisted that no final decisions had yet been made on any of the products that will be on the shelves later this year.

It’s surprising that no one has a real explanation for why Meghan’s ShopMy page is blank right now. While the Mail and other tabloids have screamed about it all week, no one has an actual Sussex source explaining what Meghan is doing there. I suspect that it’s not a bad thing, and I also suspect that Meghan is not shutting down her ShopMy completely. But we’ll see. As for Marina Hyde and Richard Osman’s pocketwatching and gossip-mongering… lmao. They can’t cry about “Netflix is cutting their ties with the Sussexes” anymore, so now it’s “Netflix is cutting their ties with As Ever!” Girl, why?? Netflix suddenly doesn’t like to make money?

Yesterday, at noon EST, As Ever dropped another product line to coincide with the season season of With Love, Meghan. Minus a limited-edition honey, all of the old favorites were back in stock, including all of the teas, the flower sprinkles, the shortbread mix, etc. Meghan added a new jam flavor: orange marmalade. Raspberry is STILL not in stock, and there’s no indication that apricot will ever be offered again! Still, I’m really into As Ever’s “hero product,” the jam/spread, and I like oranges, so I bought two jars. I will let you know when I get them, and when I get my replacement/gift apricot jam. I swear to God, if the As Ever system steals these jars like it did with my apricot jam, I will march straight to the Daily Mail to complain!!

Interestingly enough, I double-checked As Ever’s site this morning, roughly 18 hours after the product launch. None of the items are labeled “sold out.” So… either the products aren’t selling like they were back in April and June, or… Meghan finally worked out her supply line and she understands the demand for these products now. I think it’s the latter – the orange marmalade might be As Ever’s first jam flavor with a huge amount in stock.

Meanwhile, as everything was happening all at once on Tuesday, Prince Harry surprised his wife with a special gift – a huge, blown-up photo of Meghan and Guy Markle, her late beagle son. Meghan posted the video of the art piece, with Lili running around excitedly. An appearance of Lili on Meghan’s IG Stories has already caused at least one hilarious meltdown – The Royalist Substack was huffing and puffing about “WHAT ABOUT PRIVACY.” These people really have to stop banging their heads against a wall every single time Meghan posts something personal and sweet on her social media.

The Duchess of Sussex gave people a lot to consume this week. The new season of With Love, Meghan came out on Tuesday, as did a new As Ever product drop. A new interview with Meghan also came out on Tuesday: a great piece with Bloomberg’s The Circuit with Emily Chang. Meghan came across really well (imo) and she seemed pretty loose as she chatted and joked around. At one point, Chang asked Meghan about relatability, and Meghan’s answer has caused a lot of fury in the British press. I can’t help it, I’m laughing my ass off at everyone over there freaking out because Meghan basically rolled her eyes at royal pantyhose protocols! From The Sun:

Meghan Markle has made yet another dig at the Royal Family as she claimed she “couldn’t be as vocal” when in the UK. The Duchess of Sussex, 44, opened up about how her life felt “inauthentic…several years ago” in an interview with Bloomberg Originals.

The mum-of-two, who lives in a £12million Montecito mansion and spends her evenings learning French on Duo Lingo, was asked if it’s hard to appear “relatable”.

She replied: “No, I’m just being myself. I think it was probably different several years ago where I couldn’t be as vocal and I had to wear nude pantyhose all the time. Let’s be honest, that’s not very myself, I hadn’t seen pantyhose since movies in the eighties when they came in that little egg. That felt a little bit inauthentic, but that’s a silly example, but it is an example of when you’re able to dress the way you wanna dress and you’re able to say the things that are true and you’re able to show up in the space really organically that’s being comfortable in your own skin.”

The Sun’s Matt Wilkinson referred to this as a “veiled dig.” It’s the pantyhose story which brought down the British empire! Meghan’s pantyhose is a slap in the face to the dead queen! Queen Elizabeth told all of her friends how furious she was about Meghan’s pantyhose!! Would you like to see someone else freak out about the pantyhose story? Behold, Tom Sykes’ Royalist Substack, where he threw a full-on tantrum about Meghan DARING to mention the royal pantyhose protocol!

Meghan Markle promoted the second season of her Netflix lifestyle series today by accusing the British royal family of making her wear “nude pantyhose” in yet another retread of her signature theme of portraying palace life as an unbearable system of micro-aggression and control.

Instead of taking a prime sofa on Today or GMA, which she could book with a text message, she chose Bloomberg Originals’ The Circuit. The interview dropped this morning on Bloomberg’s YouTube lineup and, at last check, had drawn 14,000 views—a respectable tally for a business-news franchise but hardly the roar of mainstream morning television. The Circuit, to be fair, is no minnow. Emmy-nominated, running across Bloomberg’s many platforms, and with the company touting 62 million monthly video viewers in 2024, it carries weight in financial circles. But it is still not network TV. That feels deliberate. Meghan long ago stopped doing the obvious media rounds, preferring niche settings where the conversation can be guided gently around anything inconvenient.

So here she was with Emily Chang, whose opening order of an oatmeal chai latte set the tone for what followed: a string of friendly prompts that allowed Meghan to sketch, once again, her favored self-portrait—conscious founder, authentic businesswoman, victim of stifling royal dress codes. Chang’s best question—whether there’s a tension between being relatable and being a duchess—produced the line that has gone viral: “No, I don’t find— I’m just being myself. So I think, probably, it was different several years ago where I couldn’t be as vocal… I had to wear nude pantyhose all the time… That felt a little bit inauthentic.”

I can’t be alone in finding Meghan’s habit of painting the British royal family as an oppressive straitjacket deeply hypocritical, when every ounce of her fame, wealth, and celebrity springs from her membership of it. Without “Duchess of Sussex” stitched into her bio, there would be no Netflix deal, no glossy rosé launch, and certainly no Bloomberg chair. The very institution she dismisses as repressive is the foundation of her brand!

This hosiery detail is a retread of her biggest selling product to date: grievance.

It would be incredibly refreshing if, just once, Meghan could simply acknowledge the obvious. She was not well known before she married Prince Harry, and that marriage made her world-famous. She could also do herself a favor and clarify afresh that Queen Elizabeth, whatever Meghan’s personal disagreements with the institution she ran, embodied duty and service in a way that commanded global respect.

Meghan does not have to endorse everything the monarchy did to concede that the late Queen was an extraordinary example of showing up in the world and doing good work. Instead, she continues to present herself as if the family spent all its energy controlling her passport, her wardrobe, and now her underwear. The claims feel unconvincing and aimed at reheating the grievance cycle that keeps her in the headlines.

It would be incredibly refreshing if, just once, these royalists would acknowledge that they’re going to throw screeching tantrums about every single little thing Meghan says, does, sells, wears and cooks. She was, at the time, a Californian in her 30s who was not used to wearing pantyhose, but she did it because there was a whole-ass royal pantyhose protocol about it. Now, years later, she can use the pantyhose protocol as an example of how asinine and controlling those people are. “Instead, she continues to present herself as if the family spent all its energy controlling her passport, her wardrobe, and now her underwear.” The family actually DID spend a lot of energy controlling her, smearing her, defaming her, and abusing her. Don’t just shrug off the fact that those f–kers TOOK HER PASSPORT. Don’t shrug off the fact that they refused to allow her to access mental health counseling. Don’t shrug off the fact that to this very day, Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace still brief royal reporters on the Sussexes’ activities, even when those activities have nothing to do with the left-behinds.

Also: all of the bitching about Meghan not going on network TV is bizarre? She was literally on the Drew Barrymore Show this spring. If Meghan went on the Today Show, Sykes (and all of the royal reporters) would have thrown hissy fits about that too.
