French biochemist reveals how movement helps balance glucose spikes after meals, shares 4 tips: ‘Household chores like…’

Sitting down and relaxing immediately after meals can spike glucose levels. Instead, Jesse Inchauspé recommends 4 daily activities to help balance spikes.

Glucose-rich meals can cause sharp spikes in blood sugar, leaving the body struggling to bring levels back to balance. While many people instinctively sit down or relax after eating, this habit can actually worsen the problem. Simple physical movement – even light daily chores – can make a significant difference in curbing these spikes and supporting healthier glucose control.

Jessie Inchauspé, a French biochemist, NYT bestselling author, and health activist popularly known as the Glucose Goddess on social media, highlights why moving after glucose-rich meals is key to balancing out blood sugar spikes. In an Instagram video posted on October 2, she explains how physical activity impacts blood glucose levels, recommending simple movements – even everyday household chores – that can help lower both glucose and insulin levels.

Why moving helps balance glucose spikes

According to Jesse, your muscles contract due to movement, and this helps them absorb glucose faster. She explains, “When your muscles contract, for example, if you’re walking, you’re squatting, you’re cleaning your apartment, after you eat something high in glucose, your muscles will uptake the glucose from that meal without needing insulin.” She stresses that it is important to keep your insulin levels low in order to prevent spikes. “So, just 10 minutes of movement after a meal can help you reduce your glucose spike of the meal without increasing your insulin levels, which is two birds, one stone,” Jesse adds.

Recommended movements

Glucose and insulin spikes can be avoided by performing simple movements, and even daily household chores can help. Besides chores, activities like walking and performing air squats are effective in lowering glucose spikes. Jesse recommends the following:

  • Walking for 10 minutes.
  • Calf raises (also known as soleus push-ups).
  • Household chores like vacuuming, folding laundry, washing dishes, cleaning the bathroom.
  • Air squats.

Neuroscientist Robert W.B. Love says eating a specific food before meals may curb appetite, prevent blood sugar spikes and support weight loss.

A simple dietary tweak could help boost weight loss and improve overall health. Neuroscientist Robert W.B. Love shares in his September 14 Instagram post why eating a specific food right before meals may aid weight loss and offer surprising health benefits.

Which food should you eat for weight loss

Robert explains in his post, “Eat this food immediately before a meal and this will reduce your blood sugar spikes. This can help prevent blood sugar spikes. It can reduce appetite and, bonus, it’s even great for your brain.”

He adds, “So the food I’m talking about is walnuts. Walnuts are rich in fibre. This helps fill up your gut, which is really good, and your gut bacteria love fibre. That’s excellent for gut health.”

“Walnuts, the fibre in walnuts, will also help prevent blood sugar spikes by slowing down the absorption of food. You feel fuller, so you’ll eat less at your meal, which can help with weight loss. And as a bonus, walnuts are great for your brain. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Your brain, outside of water, is made primarily of fat, so eating walnuts or other foods with a lot of healthy fat is really great for brain health,” he concludes.

What science says

According to a study published in February 2020 in the journal Nutrients, regular walnut consumption may enhance memory and learning abilities, improve motor coordination, and boost overall physical activity. The study also found that walnuts could help reduce anxiety levels, indicating potential mood-stabilising benefits, making them a valuable addition to a brain-healthy diet.

French biochemist shares the ‘easiest way to reduce blood sugar spikes’: Do this simple 5–10 minute exercise after meals | Health

Managing blood sugar levels can be a daily challenge, especially for people with diabetes or those at risk. Jessie Inchauspé, French biochemist and New York Times bestselling author, shares in her August 25 Instagram post how simple techniques like ‘calf raises’ can help reduce blood sugar spikes and support better glucose control. (Also read: Fitness coach shares the best exercise to regulate blood sugar and lower diabetes risk: ‘Building muscle is key’ )

Simple calf raises help lower blood sugar spikes after meals, says Biochemist.

How to do calf raises to lower glucose

“Just eaten a donut or a big bowl of pasta? Try this: Feet on the ground, lift your heels up and down. This makes your soleus muscle (hiding in your calf) contract, helping soak up the glucose from your bloodstream. And boom, smaller glucose spike,” Jessie wrote in the caption.

In a video, Jessie explains, “The soluup pushup or the calf raise, imagine you’re at your desk, at work, or at school, wherever you’ve eaten something really high in carbs. Here is the easiest and most discreet way you can lower the glucose spike at that meal. You simply put your feet on the ground and go up and down, keeping your shoes on, for 5–10 minutes.”

Jessie shares the benefits of this exercise: “Your calves contain a muscle called the soleus, which studies have shown is especially good at soaking up glucose from the bloodstream after we eat.”

What are the benefits

Quoting the study, she explains, “The study, called ‘A Potent Physiological Method to Magnify and Sustain Cellulose Oxidative Metabolism Improves Glucose and Lipid Regulation,’ asked participants to do calf pushups or raises for five hours. That’s a lot, of course, but here’s what they found: five hours of calf raises reduced post-meal glucose spikes by 52% and lowered extra insulin levels by 60%.”

She clarifies, “We don’t have to do this for 5 hours. Even doing 10 minutes can have a strong impact. In my own test, I compared a pain au chocolat with and without 10 minutes of calf raises. The glucose spike was much smaller with the exercise, and it’s very discreet. It’s very, very easy. I recommend you test this out.”

Bhumi Pednekar’s 35 kg weight loss without strict diet: Vegetarian meals, 1 hour workouts, 7 to 8K daily steps and more | Health

Actor Bhumi Pednekar’s transformation is a testament to the effectiveness of a balanced and sustainable approach to weight loss. Her journey emphasises the importance of self-acceptance, healthy habits, and patience. In a 2021 interview with Vogue India, the actor, who made her debut in 2015 with Dum Laga Ke Haisha, shared her weight loss journey, revealing she lost over 35 kg through a combination of regular exercise and a balanced diet. How did Bhumi Pednekar loss weight?

She emphasised the importance of mixing up her workout routine, which included Pilates, running, strength training, and weightlifting. Bhumi said she started her day with running, followed by a nutritious breakfast with nuts and fruits, and dedicated an hour to exercise daily. She also prioritised completing 7,000-8,000 steps per day to stay active.

Vogue India quoted Bhumi as saying, “I’ve lost over 35kg, after gaining 30kg for a film. Since then, it’s been a constant process of improvement — but I didn’t do it by starving myself. I work really hard; it’s become an active part of my routine. I like to mix it up — Pilates, running, strength and weight training… running regularly and light exercises along with a balanced diet will help keep you active. Hence, I start my day with running followed by a healthy breakfast including foods like nuts, fruits that help maintain my energy levels and give me the boost of nutrition I need to go about my day. And during the afternoons I hit the gym to exercise.”

‘I am a vegetarian now – that truly changed my life’

Additionally, Bhumi highlighted the significance of mindful eating, adopting a vegetarian diet, and making conscious food choices to maintain her energy levels and overall well-being.

She also told Vogue India in 2021, “I make sure to dedicate an hour to exercise daily and have made a resolution to complete 7,000-8,000 steps in a day so I don’t feel lethargic. It may look difficult since you’re indoors all the time but it’s important to push yourself… I believe that you should, be mindful of what you eat, not how much you eat. I am a vegetarian now and that has truly changed my life and opened my eyes to the importance of conscious food choices.”
