Laufey’s Massive Rise Was Just a Matter of Time » PopMatters

Three-quarters of the way through the annus horribilis that has been 2025, as many of us have to strain our minds for the tiniest hint of optimism, a 26-year-old Chinese-Icelandic music prodigy, Laufey, has been packing arenas across North America. Including two sold-out dates at New York’s Madison Square Garden and another pair of sold-out dates in Toronto, all within one week.

It’s the latest in what has been an astonishing ascent for Laufey Lín Bing Jónsdóttir, who in 2020 was just another young person on TikTok during the lockdown, seeking to connect with others. Five years later, she’s in a sparkly Margot Fonteyn-inspired Bode dress, skipping along to a bossa nova tune in front of thousands of adoring fans who sing along to every word. The best part is that she did it on her own terms.

Barely a year removed from her much-ballyhooed multi-show appearance at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Laufey was back in a venue five times the size, packed with a diverse collection of humanity. Most of the young girls in the audience sported homemade felt crowns and were clad in costumes that matched Laufey’s sparkly aesthetic, while groups of queer youngsters giddily bought merch by the bagful. Peppered throughout the crowd were not just parents of costumed kids, but boomer jazz aficionados, curious Gen-Xers like myself, and clusters of the young “performative males” that Laufey loves to poke fun at.

On more than one occasion, I’ve attempted to describe Laufey to the uninitiated and explain why she’s so popular. “Picture an artist drawing inspiration from the Great American Songbook like Lana Del Rey does, only instead of singing about the death of the myth of the American dream, she’s a band/theater kid who’s into Broadway, Snoopy, matcha, and bunnies.” She didn’t just attend the esteemed Berklee School of Music; she graduated, contrary to the running joke that most famous Berklee alums drop out before completing their studies.

She plays cello, guitar, and piano. Her resonant voice is a blend of Ella Fitzgerald and Diana Krall, and her compositions draw from the influences of Tin Pan Alley, George Gershwin, Chet Baker, and Norah Jones. To label her as a jazz interloper or worse, “Starbucks music”, does her a disservice; her deep love of mid-20th-century pop and jazz vocals is palpable in every song she sings.

Laufey’s first swing for the mainstream fences, A Matter of Time is a Technicolor fever dream that embraces the past, present, and future of popular music, expanding her sound well beyond the jazz-folk of 2023’s Bewitched and showcasing her versatility and range as a songwriter, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, and singer.

The stage design for her 2025 tour, brought to life by London architects Stufish, gracefully reflects the ambition of the record. The main stage represents a palatial ballroom, while a sleek catwalk (inspired by the scroll of stringed instruments) connects to a smaller second stage shaped like a clock, its numbers illuminating one by one during a four-act show to reflect the passage of time. Orchestra risers flanking the main stage house Laufey’s eight-piece backing band, while two curved staircases move to create specific effects, such as a carousel for (you guessed it) “Carousel”, and a stormy Nordic cliffside for the epic “Forget-Ne-Not”.

Accompanied by four dancers, Laufey kicked off the show in full Doris Day mode on the utterly charming “Clockwork”. As someone more accustomed to the huge pop of a superstar’s grand entrance, it was disarming to hear the adoring screams quickly die down, allowing the gentle swing of the music to take over. It was a magical little moment, though the young crowd gave their idol license to take them on a languid musical journey. They were there to listen. No one was screaming lyrics with liturgical fervour; instead, kids dreamily sang along to their favorite numbers and gleefully provided joyous (and surprisingly on-point) claps to punctuate Laufey’s latest twinkly bossa nova revival, “Lover Girl”.

Later on, “Silver Lining” pulled out all the 1950s pop stops, reminiscent of the starry-eyed ballads of Connie Francis, its gloriously melodramatic chorus becoming a gigantic sing-along. With Laufey on grand piano, the sumptuous “Too Little, Too Late” hints at Carole King. Still, her strong, mid-range timbre actually bears an uncanny similarity to the powerful chest voice of the underrated Ronee Blakley, adding an extra touch of anguish to an already heartbreaking tune.

The smaller second stage became a showcase for Laufey’s “jazz club” second act. Clad in an embroidered miniskirt with copious, flapper-style beaded fringe, she and her jazz trio launched into a cover of 1940s standard “Seems Like Old Times” (famously covered by her hero, Ella), followed by jazz interpretations of early songs “Valentine”, “Fragile”, and “While You Were Sleeping”.

Back on the main stage, “Carousel” and “Forget-Me-Not” were spectacles in themselves thanks to that understated yet dazzling stage design, which then segued into the surprising inclusion of A Matter of Time’s musical interlude, “Cuckoo Ballet”. A cute medley of the first six tracks on the album (another charming nod to mid-century musical theater), it was an opportunity for Laufey to strut her stuff further, this time performing a cello solo.

The Golden Age of Hollywood was a prominent theme of the show’s giddy fourth act, which focused primarily on A Matter of Time, more contemporary-leaning material. “Mister Eclectic” is a humorous, witty takedown of performative males that translates well to a live setting. “Castle in Hollywood” and “Tough Luck” flirt with modern pop tropes without compromising Laufey’s retrofuturist persona. The brutal, confessional “Snow White” served as a fitting emotional climax to the main set. Laufey’s lyrics about her own body dysmorphia are echoed gracefully by her dancers, choreographing full-body mirrors that stalk the singer during the performance.

Her beguiling breakthrough single from 2023, “From the Start”, is showing no sign of slowing down, and to no one’s surprise, it received a euphoric reaction from the audience, who were swept away by Laufey’s little scat solo as she danced across the sparkly stage. However, it was A Matter of Time‘s closing track, “Sabotage”, that left a bigger impression.

It wasn’t so much the brilliant execution of the song’s dissonant jump scare, but rather that the jump scare (and the song’s blustery outro) echoes the more abrasive moments of the late Scott Walker, hinting that there’s more to Laufey than self-referential mellow bossa nova tracks and cute bunny mascots. After all, glitter shines brighter when juxtaposed with darkness, and the way “Sabotage” built to its cacophonous crescendo was thrilling to witness in person.

Laufey’s final song was her poignant “Letter to My 13-Year-Old Self”, which includes the line, “I’m so sorry that they pick you last / Try to say your foreign name and laugh.” As soon as she sang it, shouts of “Laufey!” echoed from the darkness, her expression of vulnerability met with a chorus of affirmation that was, frankly, quite moving.

Laufey is a prodigious talent, but also immensely relatable: she’s a nerd, and everyone was at the show because, well, we’re all nerds too. Forty years ago, I was a band geek in junior high and didn’t fit in either. I’m not wild about matcha, but I’ve grown to love musical theater. Snoopy is awesome. Mei-Mei the bunny is indeed super cute. I’ve been humming those bossa nova tunes all year long. I turn 55 tomorrow, and I can’t wait to see what Laufey does next.

Emmerdale star Joshua Richards on Bear’s shocking descent into modern slavery – and past role exploring “horrifying” subject matter

by jummy84 November 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Joshua Richards has spoken at length for the first time about his Emmerdale character Bear Wolf’s shocking new storyline.

Bear, who has been missing for several months while his son Paddy Dingle (Dominic Brunt) assumed he was staying with a friend in Ireland, has actually been manipulated as a victim of modern slavery.

Shedding light on Bear’s circumstances, Richards told RadioTimes.com and other press that “basically it’s something that you can slip into, and if you’ve been manipulated a certain way”.

“And being a certain age as well, where maybe you do think that you’re useless and redundant, if someone convinces you that no, you are worth something, that you do have some kind of currency. Currency being the operative word,” he emphasised.

It’s a harrowing new story for the soap. ITV

“You can be somehow manipulated into a situation that you didn’t envisage seeing yourself in, in the first place. So it’s quite fascinating how these things actually do happen.”

The actor has described Bear’s ordeal as “one of the most horrifying things you can possibly think of”.

“Some are in the dark web of life, there are people who are gangs, who are criminals, who are ready to exploit people. Because the biggest bill you’ll ever get for anything you have done, for example your house extension, the biggest part of your bill is the labour,” he explained.

“And if criminal gangs can take that essence out, that you don’t have to pay for that labour, then that’s where big profits are made, people are exploited and misery begins.”

Richards went on to share how he prepared for such a harrowing storyline.

“All I can do is be a very old-fashioned actor and read the script because I don’t hold with the method way of things,” he said. “I didn’t lock myself away in a tent or hide in the countryside and try to scrabble along.

“No, I just read the scripts and used my imagination to put myself in the position of other people, who are in the real position. Basically it’s done by the auspices of the great researchers and the writers of the drama.”

Something that helped the star, who joined Emmerdale in 2019 as Paddy’s long-lost father, was that he has already portrayed modern slavery in his career.

Paddy looks worried in Emmerdale

Paddy thinks the police aren’t taking the situation seriously. ITV

“But also what’s fortunate for me, in 2007 I did a play written by John Godber and Jane Thornton from Hull Truck [Theatre Company] called Sold. Which was all about modern slavery.

“That was 18 years ago and we did it in Hull and also in Liverpool University, so it’s not a new subject for me; it’s something I’ve been aware of for many years and even before I did that play.

“It is quite frightening that even as we speak, there are about [50] million people in modern day slavery, which is horrific.”

Asked about the instalment in which Emmerdale will detail how Bear was targeted, Richards revealed: “Yes, it’ll be a standalone episode, where we’ll have some kind of explanation of what exactly happened to him after he got in his car and drove away.

“We did see a few weeks after he’d left the village that he was still with his car and not with his friend Gnasher in Ireland at all. So we will find out exactly what happened to him.”

The episode was filmed backwards, meaning that, after being assured that he would be coming back to the show, Richards had one specific assignment during his time off.

Celia Daniels grabs April Windsor and threatens her in Emmerdale

Celia and Ray – who are already grooming Amelia and Dylan – are his captors. ITV

“Clare Golds in make-up said: ‘Whatever you do, don’t cut your hair and don’t shave your beard. Go raggedy’. So I became a raggedy old man while I was off.

“You first see Bear when he’s at the real bottom, looking really filthy and scraggly and unkempt. Then bit by bit we took it away.”

While soaps have briefly explored modern slavery in recent years, this is the first time it will be covered in depth – and with an older character like Bear, who, notes Richards, typically considers himself strong and capable of defending himself.

“I thought it would be interesting, because of course Bear has been experiencing this depression and confusion. So maybe it’s a great thing to find him so vulnerable – a big strong man being vulnerable and exploited.”

On the message he hopes this story can send, Richards told RadioTimes.com and other media: “Be aware – it’s going on under our noses.

“We all have our cars cleaned and say: ‘Ooh, that’s cheap’. But who are the people cleaning your car? I mean, that’s just a very tiny part of it.

“It’s other things, it’s people who are picking your spuds, it’s people who are fixing your driveway, maybe there’s somebody doing work on your roof. You really don’t know. I mean, there are bona fide proper people – builders, farmers, other people – out there,” he said.

“I’m very proud to be part of what ITV is doing with these wonderful writers and the great research which has gone on. And maybe hopefully something… it will prompt something and there will be action.”

How does Richards think the viewers will react to the revelations about Bear?

“They’ll be furious!”

“I do get people coming up to me and saying: ‘How is Bear? We’re worried about him?’ You think ‘this is great’ because people who watch this soap really do care.”

Emmerdale is working with the Salvation Army on Bear’s story, which has also seen teens April and Dylan groomed in recent weeks.

Is Alex Vesia OK? Why He’s Away From Dodgers Bullpen

Alex does not appear to have an injury or an illness, but since he has yet to publicly comment on his hiatus, it’s unclear if he is managing a physical issue. As previously noted, the Dodgers stated that Alex is off the World Series roster for a “personal matter.”

When Will Alex Vesia Return to the Dodgers?

Since it’s unclear what is going on with him, Alex’s estimated return date to the Dodgers is still unknown. If he is placed on the family emergency medical list, Alex could be activated later on during the World Series.

What Happened With Alex Vesia & His Family?

Neither Alex nor Kayla has publicly addressed the reason behind his departure, but they were expecting their first child.

Do Alex Vesia & His Wife Have Children?

Not at the moment, but Alex and his wife, Kayla, were expecting their first child this year. As seen in their respective Instagram posts, Kayla was pregnant. She was on the field with Alex to celebrate the Dodgers’ NLCS victory less than a week before the Dodgers announced his “personal matter.”

Neither Alex nor Kayla has publicly commented on their family’s situation.

Yankees Alum Brett Gardner’s Son Miller Has Preliminary Cause of Death Revealed

The Los Angeles Dodgers are missing a teammate.

The day before the MLB team is set to return to the 2025 World Series to face off against the Toronto Blue Jays, they announced that their pitcher Alex Vesia is currently absent due to a private matter with his pregnant wife Kayla Vesia.

“It’s with a heavy heart that we share that Alex Vesia is away from the team as he and his wife Kayla navigate a deeply personal family matter,” the organization wrote in a statement shared to Instagram Oct. 23. “The entire Dodgers organization is sending our thoughts to the Vesia family, and we will provide an update at a later date.”

No further details about Alex’s absence were provided, and neither he nor his wife—who announced in April they were expecting a baby—have provided any updates of their own.

Amid the hiatus of one of their star pitchers, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts detailed how the team is attempting to pivot, given the fact that the team must submit a World Series roster by 10 a.m. ET on the day of the first game, per ESPN.

“This is the only time I’ll speak on this matter”

by jummy84 October 3, 2025

D4vd‘s manager, Josh Marshall, has spoken out for the first time after a body was found in a car registered to the musician.

The deceased was identified last month as a teenage girl, who was said to be between the ages of 14 and 15. The body has since been identified as Celeste Rivas Hernandez, 15, with the exact cause of death currently listed as “deferred”.

“Deferred cases can take a few months before a cause of death is determined,” said the medical examiner’s office. According to a recent report by People, the LAPD’s robbery-homicide division is still investigating the case.

LAPD Captain and Commanding Officer Scot M. Williams said officers were yet to determine “if anyone has any criminal culpability for her death beyond the concealment of her dead body”.

However, he said police do “know for sure that Celeste Rivas Hernandez died and someone placed her body in the front trunk area of David Burke’s Tesla”.

The Tesla in question was registered in Hempstead, a city near Houston in Texas, to D4vd (real name David Anthony Burke).

As Far Out reports, a TikTok user under the name ‘Girl Town’ recently shared a video on the platform, accusing Marshall of being involved in the death of the teenage girl.

He has categorically denied any wrongdoing in the comments section, writing: “How dare you say something like this with no facts.”

Marshall added: “This video is false and the person is misinformed. This is the only time I’ll speak on this matter. FOR NOW. This has been a tough time for my family as I am a father of 3 children.”

The manager and music executive, who runs the label Mogul Vision, also denied the claim that he had been living in a mansion in the Hollywood Hills with D4vd and Hernandez. Additionally, he refuted an allegation that he had received an email from a “family friend” of Hernandez in 2024, containing her missing person’s report.

@girltownnj

Allegedly. Justice for Celeste Rivas Hernandez🙏. What do you guys think?! #d4vd #truecrime #truecrimetok

“I received no emails and I’m no one’s roommate, I live full-time at home with my wife and kids,” Marshall responded. “My daughter is 14 and this news is affecting so many lives. I never received any emails. I had zero knowledge of anything and I don’t live in California.”

He continued: “Also I work remotely 95 per cent of the time and my job doesn’t require me to have much interaction with any of my clients/David, as there are many others that work with him on a day-to-day capacity, not me.”

Marshall went on: “This news is tragic for so many and for her family. I hope the proper authorities get to the bottom of it soon.

“Let me remind people a lot of this is speculation and alleged. In the meantime, I am with my family helping them emotionally get through the news of this tragedy. Please report on factual information. – Josh Marshall.”

The body was discovered on September 8 after police responded to a report of a foul odour coming from an impounded vehicle at a tow yard in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Sources in the neighbourhood where the Tesla was parked previously reported that the vehicle had been seen in various places over the past few months. It was reportedly left in its final spot on Bluebird Avenue in the Hollywood Hills for about three weeks. Before this, it was said to have been parked a few blocks away as far back as May.

After the body was found, it was revealed that Burke had been informed of the investigation and was “cooperating” with the authorities. He has since been linked to the home that the LAPD had searched in connection with the deceased’s disappearance.

D4vd recently cancelled his US tour and shelved plans to release a deluxe edition of his debut album ‘Withered’. His headline tour dates in Europe and the UK have since been cancelled too.

The musician was out on tour when the body was discovered, and initially continued with the dates as planned. During a gig in Minneapolis last month, he thanked fans for their support and threw Labubus into the audience.

Salish Matter Is Your Average Teen (Who Shuts Down a Mall and Sells Out Sephora)

by jummy84 October 2, 2025
written by jummy84

Basically, just on an average day like today, I wake up. Too early. [Laughs.] I go to school. I sometimes hang out with friends after, unless I have sports that I do. Then, that’s kind of it. It’s pretty normal, average, typical teenage life.

When you need some downtime or a moment for yourself, what do you like to do?

I feel like I don’t have too many of those moments. I hate being alone, so probably hanging out with friends because I don’t like being alone.

When do you feel the most like yourself—like the most confident, the most you? What are you usually doing?

Obviously just being with people I love, like my friends and my family, but definitely now, in front of the camera. I love filming videos, and I feel so confident and myself in front of the camera.

Could you describe your style in three words?

[Both laugh.]

Wait. Okay. I mean, probably, typical and average and comfy. I’m always wearing sweats and hoodies, like right now. I’m not dressing up for school.

What’s your proudest achievement, personally or professionally?

I think Sincerely Yours is a huge achievement. I’m so happy with everything that’s been happening.

Who do you look up to or consider a role model?

Jordan: You’re looking at him.

Salish: Honestly, actually, not even as a joke, my dad. He’s taught me so many things. He teaches me a lot.

Jordan: I was joking. Are we recording this? Because I want that. Can somebody get me that clip?

What’s your dream job, Salish?

Honestly, I’m not sure. I don’t know whether or not it’s going to be YouTube. I definitely think I want to do something with business, because I really enjoyed everything we’ve been doing [with Sincerely Yours]. I want to do YouTube for as long as I can. I’m not sure. I often think about that, and I don’t know.

Young Thug Says He’ll “Never Look At Gunna The Same No Matter What”

Young Thug has opened up a bit further about his rift with his longtime friend and collaborator, Gunna.

On Monday’s (Sept. 29) episode of the It’s Up There Podcast, the Atlanta rapper spoke candidly about their fractured relationship, revealing that the bond they once shared is irreparable now following their two-year YSL RICO case.

Thug served two years in jail, while Gunna spent seven months behind bars after pleading guilty to racketeering charges. “I’m not gonna be able to look at [Gunna] the same no matter what,” Thug told the host. “We can go get a trillion dollars together. I’m not gonna be able to look at you the way I looked at you before we went to jail.”

Once inseparable, the two artists’ relationship hit a turning point after Gunna was allowed to leave jail only after acknowledging that YSL functioned as a gang. Thug, meanwhile, remained incarcerated until October 2024, when he reached his own plea agreement.

“I love you to death,” Thug admitted about Gunna. “I know you love me. We love each other to death, but we just going our own ways.”

Both rappers were among 28 individuals swept up in a 2022 RICO indictment, which prosecutors described as “targeting a hybrid entity” — part record label, part street gang. The case dragged on for nearly two years, becoming one of the longest criminal trials in Georgia history.

“The only reason why I’m looking at it like some bullsh*t is because you my brother,” Thug said speaking indirectly to Wunna. “On top of that, you my man, you my best friend.” Though he emphasized that he has no resentment towards him, Thug admitted that Gunna’s plea felt like a betrayal of their bond.

“It ain’t even no sense for you to trying to be back cool with me because we gonna be around each other and it’s gonna be weird,” he added. “The dap-up gonna be different, everything gon’ be different ’cause I already look at it like a different situation.” Despite the tension, Thug insists he’s not rooting against his former friend. “I still want you to eat, just not at my table,” he clarified.

The “Slat” rhymer made it clear that if he was to be around Gunna and “happy” he’ll “just feel like a f**k ni**a.” He explained, “I’mma feel like not a real person. I gotta be real, bruh.”

Take a look at his latest remarks on his relationship with Gunna below.

The Fall 2025 Menswear Trends That Matter, According to Mytheresa

by jummy84 September 30, 2025
written by jummy84

Summer may be over (sad), but with fall’s arrival, it’s time to start thinking about cool-weather outfits. Yay! To help us make sense of the season ahead, we tapped the supremely stylish Sophie Jordan, the menswear buying director of Mytheresa. Here, she tells us which fall trends to consider, how she would style them, what you should buy to shake up your wardrobe for the months ahead, which classic pieces are worth investing in, and so much more.

Hi, Sophie! What are some of the big trends and ideas you saw in the fall collections that you’re picking up for the Mytheresa man?

Tailoring was for us. It’s a key story we see every season, but for fall 2025, it’s evolved with a more fashion-forward point of view. There were a lot of pinstripes for a strong sartorial take—a real 1980s, “Patrick Bateman in American Psycho” vibe. The Tom Ford runway is a key reference here and also Brioni tailoring, which they styled with striped shirts with contrast white collars and a pattered tie. It made for a really polished look.

We interpreted this as a “smartening up” or “making an effort” look. We also really considered the male customer who’s buying into this category for the first time. Maybe he’s buying into Auralee suiting, which was also styled with a shirt, tie, or even a knit. The result is super elegant but still cool.

What’s a new brand that the Mytheresa customer should have on their radar this season?

A.Presse is a new brand from Japan that we introduced for fall, and it’s already getting a fantastic reaction. The sweatshirts and jackets are already selling well. The fabrications are incredibly special ([everyone] mentions how lovely they are when you touch them), and the attention to detail and authenticity in their vision for the brand is very unusual to see. We’re so happy to be partnering with them.

Saman Amel is a personal favorite but also a brand that continues to grow for us season after season. Their modern approach to tailoring and wardrobing is really exciting. Their silk shirts and pants are best sellers alongside the linen they introduced for high summer. The trajectory of this brand—and how much more room they have to develop their vision—is truly exciting.
