Sabrina Carpenter Performs “Manchild” and “Nobody’s Son” on Saturday Night Live: Watch

Sabrina Carpenter was the host and musical guest on last night’s (October 18) episode of Saturday Night Live, where she performed songs from her new album Man’s Best Friend. Dressed in SNL-themed underwear, Carpenter sang the single “Manchild” into a hairbrush; later, she donned a gi and did some karate for the album track “Nobody’s Son.” Carpenter also starred in sketches throughout the evening as a 12-year-old boy podcast host, a girlboss motivational speaker who suffers a head injury, and a singing washing machine.

In her opening monologue, Carpenter addressed the controversy around the Man’s Best Friend album cover. “What people don’t realize is that’s just how they cropped it,” she joked. “If you zoom out it’s clearly a picture from the [Saturday Night Live] 50th anniversary special of Bowen [Yang] helping me up by the hair after Martin Short shoved me out of the buffet line, saying something like ‘Daddy need his mini quiche.’” Carpenter also touched on her brand as a “horndog popstar”—“I’m not just horny, I’m also turned on, and sexually charged”—did some sexually charged crowd work, and was nearly arrested by Keenan Thompson. Watch Carpenter’s full speech and performances, plus her SNL promo video with cast member Marcello Hernandez, below.

Last night marked Carpenter’s third appearance on Saturday Night Live—fourth if you count her cameo in this year’s Quinta Brunson-hosted episode. She first stopped by Studio 8H as musical guest on the heels of her 2024 album Short n’ Sweet, and was a part of SNL50: The Anniversary Special, where she performed a duet of the Simon & Garfunkel song “Homeward Bound” alongside Paul Simon. On Thursday, Carpenter will kick off a run of North American arena shows, with stops in Pittsburgh, New York, Nashville, Toronto, and Los Angeles.

Season 51 of Saturday Night Live premiered on October 4. The season debut was hosted by Bad Bunny, with Doja Cat serving as musical guest. After taking this week off, SNL’s next three episodes are set to feature Miles Teller and Brandi Carlile, Nikki Glaser and Sombr, and Glen Powell and Olivia Dean, respectively.

Sabrina Carpenter Performs ‘Manchild,’ ‘Nobody’s Son’

The pop star plays the lead single and another track from her latest album, Man’s Best Friend

Two-time Saturday Night Live musical guest Sabrina Carpenter—also the host of Saturday’s show—performed two tracks from her seventh and latest album, Man’s Best Friend.

Carpenter opened with the lead single “Manchild,” which she co-wrote with Bleachers’ Jack Antonoff and Amy Allen. The pop star, who graced Rolling Stone‘s July-August cover, quipped to us when asked if it’s about anyone in particular: “It’s about your dad.”

Carpenter’s second song was “Nobody’s Son.” The reggae-pop tune—sixth on the track list—was co-written by Carpenter, Allen and John Ryan.

About Man’s Best Friend, which hit the top spot on the US Billboard 200 shortly after its late August release, Rolling Stone‘s Brittany Spanos wrote in a positive review: “Her new songs are united in their grooviness as Carpenter’s heartbreak and disappointment in her male options takes her on a thoroughly modern tour of what dating, embracing, and then flipping the script on the humiliation ritual that is being a woman who dates men.”

Trending Stories

Carpenter debuted on SNL in May 2024. During the season 49 finale, she performed her hit single “Espresso,” which she would later include on her album Short n’ Sweet, as well as a medley of two songs from 2022’s Emails I Can’t Send. The singer-actress was last in Studio 8H in February during the 50th anniversary special, joining Paul Simon for a rendition of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound.”

Carpenter will be back in New York next week as she hits the home stretch of her Short n’ Sweet tour. After that, she’ll be in Nashville, Toronto, and then Los Angeles.

Sabrina Carpenter Performs “Manchild” in Campy SNL Bedroom Set

Pulling double duty as host and musical guest on this week’s Saturday Night Live, Sabrina Carpenter staged a pair of instantly iconic performances in support of her latest album, Man’s Best Friend.

Carpenter first performed “Manchild” on a bedroom-themed set, dressed in SNL-branded pajamas, and singing into a hairbrush like a microphone. Leaning into the song’s tongue-in-cheek spirit — a playful takedown of a man who looks grown but still acts like a boy — she fully embraced the camp, turning the stage into a sleepover fantasy complete with exaggerated choreography, dramatic camera winks, and tongue-in-cheek theatrics that brought the track’s biting humor and empowering message to life. There was even an homage to the Cameron Diaz’s mirror dance scene in Charlie’s Angels.

Later in the episode, she delivered the live debut of “Nobody’s Son,” complete with choreography inspired by a karate dojo.

Elsewhere during her hosted episode of SNL, she reprised her role in Kelsey’s crew for a new Domino sketch, starred in a horror-themed movie trailer about a couple who suddenly found themselves with plans, interviewed Donald Trump as a host of the Snack Homies podcast, hocked a provocativew neck pillow on QVC, and was Bowen Yang’s date for a school dance. Check out the highlights below.

Carpenter is set to head out on the latest fall leg of her “Short n’ Sweet Tour” later this month. Tickets can be purchased here.

Re-Creating Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild” Music Video Look

Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild” video was full of her serving face and hair, and we’re taking you through how to re-create the exact look. From getting her voluminous curls to re-creating her shimmery shadow and rosy cheeks, keep watching for the full breakdown of how to achieve the look!

Meghan Mahar:

Today I’m going to show you how to rock the look. We’ll be re-creating Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild” music video, look, oh boy.

Dominique Noëlle:

What did you really like about her look in the video?

I love Sabrina Carpenter’s hair. You know, people are always talking about it online, wondering if she’s wearing a wig. But in the “Manchild” video, in particular, the curls were so big, voluminous.

I really love, like, the big, voluminous curl looks particularly because it’s very, very retro. It gives me, like, those ’70s vibes. I think that she really liked Sophia Loren, when I was looking through some of her references because that’s just, like, I just love the hyper-femininity that’s happening right now. I started off by just spraying some dry heat protectant on your hair. We always have to protect our hair while we are using heat. Right now, I’m using a T3 curling iron just to, like, get some of that curl in there, you can use any one inch, one and a half inch barrel roller to get these curls, and then just a Velcro rollers just helps with setting it.

I really love Sabrina’s take on country pop. Yeah, I think that a lot of people are trying to do country, country hybrids, country features across the board. It’s so cute on her when she does the whole like powerful, feminine, little country girl thing. She’s been putting in work for years. For me, ‘Emails I Can’t Send’ has to be my favorite album of hers.

Keep watching for more!
