In a recent interview with News18 Showsha, Soni revealed that her acting career was flourishing when she first started. However, everything shifted after she married Mahesh Bhatt. She added that following her marriage, work opportunities seemed to vanish. She shared:
“I’ve grown up in this industry – in the sense that I’ve been here for so many years. There has been a huge change over the years. I find it to be an almost different world altogether. When I started out, I was doing really well. And then, suddenly, I got married. I wasn’t getting any work after that.”

In the same interview, Soni revealed that the TV series Buniyaad, created by Ramesh Sippy and Jyoti Sarup, marked a turning point in her career after she faced a lull following her marriage. She opened up about the judgments she faced after marrying Mahesh, admitting that the criticisms often left her feeling frustrated. She was quoted saying:
“I got a feedback from somewhere that since she’s now so and so’s wife, why does she need to work? I got so angry! But then, luckily, Buniyaad happened and after that, I got to work in some really good films. But before that, I was so upset. But this is what has changed today.”

During the interview, Soni revealed that for much of her life, she has often been recognised more as someone’s wife or mother than as an individual in her own right. She spoke about how her identity felt confined after becoming Mahesh’s wife and Alia Bhatt’s mother, emphasizing that her struggle is entirely personal and not related to her family. Soni also expressed joy for those around her, acknowledging their success in their respective careers. In her own words:
“All my life, even now, I’m somebody else’s somebody. Let me be very loud and clear… My struggle is still to be known by who I am. I’m happy for the people around me, who’re doing so well in their lives. How could I not be? I’m grateful. But perhaps that’s how my journey was meant to be. Now I laugh at it. It’s funny, but I just go on, thinking that it’s okay.”
