A Triumphant Return in Madrid

by jummy84 November 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Some nights don’t simply happen — they stay.
They hover above time, as if the universe knew it couldn’t expand without paying tribute to them.
Radiohead’s show at Madrid’s Movistar Arena on Friday, November 7th, was one of those nights.
After seven years of silence since A Moon Shaped Pool, fifteen thousand people felt it all at once: something was falling back into place. The world, maybe. Them, for sure.

They opened with “Planet Telex,” a song that hadn’t kicked off a concert since 2008.
The floor shook, lights spiraled, and the air turned electric.
It wasn’t just a comeback — it was a summoning, a 360-degree, immersive, circular experience of sound, image, and faith.
Then Thom Yorke appeared, moving like a preacher who has seen the future and can’t decide whether to warn us or celebrate it.
He moved at a different speed, detached from the gravity of the rest: the audience, the band, the world.
Watching him felt like seeing Heath Ledger’s Joker from Nolan’s The Dark Knight conducting a symphony — genius and danger, a crooked smile, beautiful chaos.
That look of someone who would burn the city just to watch the reflection in the glass.

Then came “There There.”
The first storm.
Perfect. Precise. Ascending.
A thunder that grew until it swallowed everything.
The crowd held it in suspense, knowing the explosion was inevitable.
And right when the storm reached its peak, “No Surprises” arrived.
And it was the rainbow after the end of the world…
The lights turned white, then golden, and the stage seemed to open itself to let peace in.
Yorke’s voice floated through the air, and fifteen thousand bodies surrendered, without resistance, to beauty.
No jumping, no shouting — just surrender.
It was the night’s first great ovation: a collective exhale.
Madrid breathed. Finally.

It was the third of four consecutive nights in the Spanish capital — the opening leg of a world tour that didn’t feel like a return but like redemption.
OK Computer anchored the setlist with six songs — “Lucky,” “Let Down,” “No Surprises,” “Paranoid Android,” “Subterranean Homesick Alien,” and “Karma Police” — while Hail to the Thief held its own with five, balancing dystopia and grace.
Together, they built the concert’s emotional skeleton, reminding everyone that the 21st century still sounds like Radiohead.
“Idioteque” — that electronic scream, that controlled chaos — was the alarm of a planet that no longer listens.

And then, “Just.”
Absent since 2009.
When it hit, the crowd erupted as if someone had hit reset on a collective heart.
It wasn’t nostalgia. It was resurrection.

Visually, the show drifted between cathedral and digital nightmare —
rotating screens, shifting projections, bodies dissolving into light.
At times, you couldn’t tell if you were watching Radiohead or your own subconscious trying to break free.
Yorke danced, spun, broke, rebuilt himself: an electric medium tuned to a frequency no one else could reach.

And “Creep” wasn’t there.
Nor was it needed.
Because Radiohead no longer play songs — they play concepts.
They don’t repeat the past; they dictate destiny.

They closed with “Karma Police.”
Fifteen thousand voices sang “For a minute there, I lost myself.”
Yorke smiled — half tenderness, half menace.
For a minute, we all lost ourselves.
And it was beautiful.
Because that minute — that moment — justified every silence, every wait, every winter.

It wasn’t a concert.
It was a planetary alignment.
A night when humanity remembered what it feels like when everything is in the right place.
Because yes: everything — absolutely everything — was in the right place.

Radiohead Reunite In Madrid – SPIN

by jummy84 November 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Radiohead began their first tour in more than seven years last night (Nov. 4) in Madrid with a 25-song show drawing on eight of their nine studio albums (sorry, Pablo Honey fans). The performance was also the live debut of second drummer Chris Vatalaro, who has previously collaborated with Radiohead drummer Phil Selway, among many other musicians.

Beyond the first airing of “Sit Down. Stand Up.” since 2004, there were no true rarities amid a set featuring six songs each from 2003’s Hail to the Thief and 1997’s OK Computer. Radiohead will apparently be drawing from a deeper pool of material for the tour and even soundchecked several extra songs earlier this week, including “The Gloaming” from Hail to the Thief.

Ahead of the tour, which continues through Dec. 12 in Berlin, Radiohead assembled vintage in-concert versions for the digital collection Hail to the Thief Live Recordings 2003-2009. The project was also just released as a one-off vinyl pressing from the band’s store.

Why such a long break for Radiohead, which hadn’t been onstage since 2018? “I guess the wheels came off a bit, so we had to stop,” frontman Thom Yorke said in a recent interview with the Times. “There were a lot of elements. The shows felt great but it was, like, let’s halt now before we walk off this cliff.”

Madrid Recap, Setlist, First Show Since 2018

by jummy84 November 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Just three months ago, the mere thought of a Radiohead concert in 2025 — or really, any future year for that matter — seemed impossible. Since the band wrapped their A Moon Shaped Pool tour in August 2018, they’ve been busy with various side projects. And we mean very busy: frontman Thom Yorke and guitarist Jonny Greenwood have released three albums as the Smile; Greenwood has scored several films, including the recent Paul Thomas Anderson epic One Battle After Another; Yorke released an LP with producer Mark Pritchard; drummer Phil Selway and guitarist Ed O’Brien both dropped solo albums; and bassist Colin Greenwood released a stunning Radiohead photo book. So, yeah, it’s been a long seven years since we’ve seen these five lads together onstage. Would it ever happen again?

When Yorke heard rumors of a band reunion last year, he shut them down quickly. “I am not aware of it and don’t really give a flying fuck,” he said. “No offense to anyone and thanks for caring.”

We care quite a bit. And that’s why it felt like a goddamn miracle when the lights dimmed at Madrid’s Movistar Arena for the kickoff to Radiohead’s 2025 European tour, and they took the stage after the longest break of their career. It was worth the wait.

They opened with the “Let Down,” marking the second time they’ve kicked off a set with the OK Computer stunner since Manchester in 2017 (it recently entered the Hot 100 a cool 28 years after its release thanks to TikTok, because the kids are just like us — hysterical and useless).

It immediately felt like the band was ushering in a new era, for several reasons. They were joined by drummer and percussionist Chris Vatalaro — a Selway collaborator who’s played with Imogen Heap, Anohni and the Johnsons, Jarvis Cocker, and more — who has seemingly taken over for Portishead’s Clive Deamer, their previous live drummer. But most notably, tonight was the first time Radiohead performed in the round. For the first few songs, they were concealed by a semi-translucent video curtain, which began to partially lift during a steadfast “Bloom,” off The King of Limbs.

The video screen split into panels that lifted up and down throughout the show, always obscuring a large part of the stage. At times, this made it difficult to see the band, but Yorke made sure to consistently shift positions so everyone in the arena could get a glimpse of him. And when we say “shift,” we actually mean “dance,” in the lovable Yorkian way we all know and love. It was joyous to see those moves again after so many years, whether it was while clutching his keyboard synth during “Ful Stop” or during “The Gloaming,” his arms wading through invisible water, shaking in his sneakers like a frenzied, enthusiastic child. It is now the witching hour. Are you ready?

Editor’s picks

“The Gloaming” is just one of the six Hail to the Thief songs the band tore through tonight, including the first “Sit Down. Stand Up.” since 2004 (we have a lot of “the rain drops” to make up for since then). “A Wolf at the Door” has only been played sporadically in the past, and Yorke nailed every single line of the spoken word Capitalist fairytale — investments and dealers! investments and dealers! — showing us just how much they’ve rehearsed for these momentous shows.

Going heavy on this 2003 album isn’t surprising, considering Radiohead just released the excellent Hail to the Thief (Live Recordings 2003-2009), packed with songs so great that they even caught Yorke by surprise. “I was shocked by the kind of energy behind the way we played,” he said at the time. “I barely recognized us, and it helped me find a way forward.” (As my colleague Rob Sheffield noted, “It’s welcome news to see Thom Yorke suddenly remembering that there once was a band called Radiohead, and that they were actually very good at playing music.”)

Related Content

“Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” will always be a highlight in any Radiohead show, if not just to watch O’Brien contribute those soulful backing vocals. The guitarist is often overlooked, but glance over at him during songs like this, and he’s singing his heart out, delivering magic. Another heartwarming In Rainbows moment: both Greenwood brothers facing each other during “Bodysnatchers,” with Colin beaming. We’re so back, baby.

Yorke isn’t one to address crowds during shows — he’s not going to tell a story about his childhood, like Bruce Springsteen. But when the band emerged to rapturous applause for the encore, he uttered two simple words while clutching an acoustic guitar: “Fair enough.” He then dove into “Fake Plastic Trees,” the only Bends material to fly in from Planet Telex tonight, complete with an audience singalong and cell phone flashlights (by this time, the video screen had officially lifted, leaving a clear view). The same goes for Amnesiac — we only got “You and Whose Army,” but it was absolutely killer, with a camera on Yorke’s mic, capturing his dramatic eyebrow raises and hand gestures.

Elsewhere, the encore portion featured the usual spectacular suspects, from a thrilling “There There” to a stop in OK Computer-ville, including “Subterranean Homesick Alien,” “Paranoid Android,” and their usual closer, “Karma Police.” A gut-wrenchingly beautiful rendition of the Kid A staple “How to Disappear Completely” was cushioned in between these, a reminder that we are indeed here, and this is really happening.

Trending Stories

This is the first Radiohead tour without a new album, and their first show of any kind since they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2019 (only O’Brien and Selway showed up to the ceremony). Several factors — grief, mental health, and intraband tension over the Israel-Hamas conflict — almost prevented them from returning at all. In a way, Yorke’s “Fair enough” sounds like an admission that they’re officially, unambiguously, classic rock. He reportedly sent around a 65-song setlist for the band to rehearse, and they plan on changing up the setlist from night to night — a major pivot from their past refusal to play the classics. It would be easy to call this a cash grab, but as they’ve proved over the last seven years, they don’t need to do these shows. This was for the fans.

AI Practical Usage Unpacked by the Madrid Audiovisual Cluster

by jummy84 October 1, 2025
written by jummy84

The real-world application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the audiovisual industry – controversies aside – will take center stage at Madrid’s Iberseries & Platino Industria on Oct. 1. Organized by the Madrid Audiovisual Cluster, an economic interest group comprising over 100 Madrid-based companies, the workshop will study seven case studies, some from members of the Cluster.

The intent is to study how AI can be a useful tool rather than delve into how it could be replacing jobs, according to Iberseries director Samuel Castro.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Marketing strategy and distribution of audiovisual content;
  • Workflow management for scripted and unscripted audiovisual productions;
  • Artificial Intelligence applied to VFX and post-production in fiction and advertising;
  • Visibility of web content in the new ecosystem shaped by AI engines and large language models,
  • And creation of sports audiovisual content

Moderator Henar León, a technology expert specializing in the cultural sector, will guide the workshop and facilitate dialogue among the participants.

These are:

Brandominus – Víctor Guerra – CEO
A Spanish digital marketing agency specializing in data-driven strategies. Its methodology combines creativity, data and analytics to deliver marketing strategies that are 100% results-oriented. They serve as a strategic agency for the Spain Film Commission and the Madrid Audiovisual Cluster, among other organizations. “Our participation in the panel is about the importance of AI in the visibility of brands and audiovisual content on search AI engines and on how the AI boom has changed the way we show up in search results – and what we need to change to adapt to the new search-ranking paradigm,” says Victor Guerra, CEO.

El Ranchito – Manuel Ramírez – President

Metropolitana de Muntatges – Ramón Arteman – Director
A Barcelona-based post-production studio founded in 1995, with additional facilities in Madrid. Specializing in visual effects, CGI, color grading, and compositing, the company serves the advertising, film, and television industries. Trusted by organizations such as the Australian Open and Premier Padel, Pendular combines cutting-edge technology with sports expertise to help clients maximize the value of their media assets efficiently and at scale. Says Ballesteros: “We’ll discuss how Pendular uses AI to generate real-time sports highlights using AI for broadcasters and leagues like the Australian Open.”

TBS – Telefónica Group – Óscar del Castillo (Head of Sports News) & Abel Muela Guerra (Head of Social Media for Sports)
Part of the Telefónica Group, one of Europe’s biggest telecoms, it specializes in entertainment and sports audiovisual content creation, production and distribution. The company offers a wide range of services including live sports broadcasting, streaming, technical production (studios, lighting, equipment), satellite and managed IP transmission and full production for specialized sports TV channels. In a joint presentation with Óscar del Castillo, Guerra will discuss the development of an AI-driven project for generating sports highlights on Movistar Plus+. “I will provide a practical demonstration showing how this AI tool automatically produces content for both the TV platform and Movistar Plus+ social media channels,” says Guerra.

Its services include tailored marketing strategies, the creation of premium visual materials (such as trailers, posters, promos, digital assets, and pitch decks) and digital campaigns during festivals and releases. In addition, its Think Data department offers data-driven services designed to support decision-making processes. “I will be presenting some case studies about how we use AI in early stages marketing. It is becoming central for our audience-oriented strategies, data-driven solutions and pitch decks,” says Calderón.
