As the temperature drops, it’s common to find yourself reaching for a lip balm to combat the stripping effects of brisk winds and frosty chills, but if those aren’t enough to help you find relief, you may need to augment your lip-care routine with the best lip mask. While lip balms are designed for use throughout the day, “lip masks are typically used overnight to do their job,” explains Kseniya Kobets, MD, board-certified dermatologist and director of cosmetic dermatology at Montefiore-Einstein Advanced Care in Westchester, New York.

Lips are more susceptible to dryness because unlike the skin on the rest of our face and body, they lack sebaceous glands. “Vaseline and Aquaphor are great for chapped lips and help prevent moisture loss, but sometimes aren’t enough to replenish lost moisture,” says Connie Yang, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at PFRANKMD in New York.
To really quench your lips’ thirst, consider using both, especially if you’re prone to dryness or if winter is wreaking havoc on your lips: your lip balm provides daily protection, while your lip mask helps stave off future chapping and irritation. Pulling back the curtain for a moment, one of the perks of reviewing albums is that when you fall in love with a new album, you have an outlet to shout about it. But sometimes it’s a double-edged sword, as writing a review also forces you to put into words why you love an album beyond, “It’s awesome. You should listen to it.”
I share this because my immediate reaction to hearing the Belair Lip Bombs sophomore album Again is simply: It’s awesome. You should listen to it.
A big reason for this is that Again is a big tent, crowd-pleasing album that I could recommend to just about anybody. You don’t get indie rock with this kind of wide appeal all that often these days. Many artists (understandably) play to their niche, their genre. The Belair Lip Bombs seemed to be playing that game too, on their 2023 album, Lush Life. It’s a solid debut, full of hooky songs with earnest vocals, but it’s also squarely post-punk. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Many great bands have long, fantastic discographies solely in that lane.
But Again finds the Belair Lip Bombs ditching genre allegiances to create songs that, frankly, would’ve been alternative and even mainstream radio hits in the 1990s. This is Buzz Bin rock for 2025. They still have their established propulsive rhythms and angular riffs, and now have added shimmering guitars, soaring vocals, and joyous melodies that you’ll be bopping to in your head for days afterwards.
Put all together, the songs feel like new old friends. You recognize elements, but the band isn’t aping any one particular artist or era. Like the song “If You’ve Got the Time” feels like if Sheryl Crow and the Beths collaborated on a summertime anthem, down to the post-chorus handclaps. “Back Of My Hand” is a jangly, rolling Waxahatchee-esque love song that—spoiler—goes on to feature crunchy Weezer guitars. It’s refreshing to hear an indie rock band that’s not afraid to go this big and inviting, and it’s great that they’re able to do so on their new label, Jack White’s Third Man Records. Hopefully it’s the right fit for such ambitions.
At the same time, the band keeps Again from ever feeling like a calculated major label sell-out album—a real danger for Buzz Bin bands!—thanks to the open-hearted yearning of lead singer Maisie Everett. Her melodic vocals keep the songs honest and grounded at all times, whether it’s a powerpop look at the ex you can’t shake (“Cinema”), an expansive new wave take on what could’ve been (“Another World”), or even a cathartic rocker like “Don’t Let Them Tell You (It’s Fair).” Her voice keeps these songs feeling equally ready for both your headphones and an outdoor amphitheater, or even an arena.Here’s hoping the band gets that chance. Again shows the Belair Lip Bombs finding their voice, and they know it. You can hear their bold, bright confidence on these songs. So one more time: It’s awesome. You should listen to it.
Lip liner—a bonafide ‘90s beauty hero—has had a major comeback in recent years. But before jumping on the bandwagon, it’s worth learning how to apply lip liner correctly. With the proper prep and technique, you can easily create a long-lasting look that takes your lip combo to the next level.
Like any makeup product that requires precision, practice makes perfect with lip liner. Once you’ve mastered the basics, there are so many ways to experiment and play. “Think of lip liner as both the blueprint and the barrier for your lip color,” Sara Kuhl, makeup artist and product education director at SeneGence tells Glamour. “It’s a small step that makes a big difference in your final look. That added definition instantly elevates your entire makeup look, giving it that refined, finished touch.”
Below, we asked professional makeup artists for a complete crash course in lip liner, from an easy step-by-step application guide to how to customize your look.

Whether you’re looking to draw more attention to your lips, or just polish up your go-to lipstick look, there are plenty of upsides to adding a liner to your routine. Even at its most basic application level, “Lip liner defines your shape, helps prevent feathering, and extends wear for long-lasting color confidence,” Kuhl says.
Once you’re comfortable with the product, your liner can act like a makeup magic wand—creating subtle illusions that bring major variety to your lip combos. “I like using a lip liner because it allows you to be super precise, and you can adjust the shape of your lips a little by making them appear fuller and more even,” Jake Warden, says Dolce & Gabbana beauty’s global makeup expert.
“Healthy, hydrated lips make for a smooth canvas,” Kuhl says. She recommends starting with a lip exfoliant or conditioning polish to gently remove any dead skin. “Follow with an antioxidant-rich juicy lip mask or a shea butter infused moisturizing gloss to nourish and hydrate, then blot lightly to remove excess moisture before applying your liner.” Warden recommends letting your lip mask sit while doing the rest of your makeup to maximize hydration.
“Start by identifying your natural border and tracing using short, light strokes for precision,” Kuhl advises. If you’re new to using lip liner, try to follow the contours of your natural lips exactly. Once you’ve created your initial outline, “use your finger or a small blending brush to softly diffuse the liner. This makes the process very forgiving and should be simple to follow.”
Once you’ve created a subtle outline, you can decide if or where you want to build up definition. Depending on your look, you might want to retrace certain areas or your full lips for a darker, higher-contrast look.
Step 4 (optional): Exaggerate
“Once you’re comfortable and feeling confident with your true shape, you can gradually start experimenting with soft, subtle enhancements,” Kuhl says. To start, you might try rounding out the center of your bottom lip to add fullness, or carving out your cupid’s bow with more liner.
While you’re learning the ropes, Warden says that it’s a good idea to pick a shade that’s close to your natural lip color—or a shade or two darker, to make sure it shows up. When picking a shade based on your skin tone, Warden recommends:

My biggest struggle with my makeup routine has always been my lips, mainly because of my overbite. lipstick and I have never gotten along—it always ends up transferring onto my front teeth—and so I usually stick to simple, sheer lip looks.
That all changed recently when viral lip-stain liner pens hit the scene. They’ve been a total game-changer, letting me add both colour and definition to my lips without any transfer. They stay put all day, and I can easily top up with a tinted lip balm or lip oil if I need to.
Now, you might think lip contouring is just about lining your lips—but it’s so much more. Similar to permanent lip blushing, which enhances definition and fullness, lip contouring works on the same principle. The difference? It’s temporary and washes off at the end of the day. Since discovering lip contouring, I’ve realised I can create the look of fuller lips—no needles or tattooing required.
To learn more, I spoke with two experts in the field: makeup artist Lisa Eldridge, whose lip looks are always flawless, and BareMinerals education manager Maria Xavier-Jackson. Ahead, they share their best tips on mastering lip contouring, plus the go-to products that make it easy to achieve.
Eldridge says that lip contouring “is choosing shades and using methods that sculpt and shape the lips, to allow you to create beautiful, natural-looking volume and dimension”. It’s essentially, as Xavier-Jackson explains, “an optical illusion. You use light and dark shades to make the lips appear fuller and more defined.”
In order to contour your lips, you’re going to need two similar shades of lip liner and lip product. You want to opt for a darker liner and then a lighter product to fill your lips in. This will allow you to create that dimension. To make things really easy, Eldridge has shared her step-by-step process for lip contouring with a pencil liner with us below.
Eldridge says you should start by “holding the pencil really lightly, so you’re not using too much pressure at all. Work in circular movements, starting at the centre of the cupid’s bow and gently buff the shade (not draw a direct line) all around the outer perimeter of your lip shape. You can use the side of the pencil to shade softly.”
“When it comes to doing the same on the lower lip, you need to smile gently, keeping your lips together, which will help you to slightly overdraw your lip shape without making them look too overdrawn.”
Now it’s onto the sculpting element. Eldridge explains that this “is a bit like pencil drawing. Take your pencil and shade at the corners and edges, creating a strong edge at the outer corner, and buffing inward toward the centre into something much softer.”
Xavier-Jackson says that you can add extra definition to certain parts of your lips at this stage to achieve the look you want. Make the ‘v’ of the cupid’s bow a harsher line, to make it more prominent and your top lip look fuller. Or, if you want your bottom lip to look fuller, you can do a greater overline in the bottom centre of your lips compared to the rest of the outline.
“To finish, take your lipstick straight to the centre of the lip. And that’s how I create a perfect, sculpted lip with volume and dimension that still looks natural” says Eldridge.
Personally, I like to use a tinted lip gloss, balm or oil instead of lipstick, as I find that the glossy shine helps to make my lips look plumper and juicier.
