5 health benefits of line dancing – according to science

by jummy84 November 13, 2025

Rockhampton , Line dancing is enjoying a global resurgence, rising to a level of popularity not seen since Billy Ray Cyrus’ Achy Breaky Heart topped the charts in 1991.

5 health benefits of line dancing – according to science

But it’s no longer just for cowgirls and cowboys. While traditionally associated with country music, line dancing has evolved to include variations of waltz, swing, salsa, disco and rock’n’roll.

This kind of synchronised dance involves people in rows repeating choreographed steps. It doesn’t require a partner, so you can turn up solo and learn on the go. And its popularity is rising among people of all ages.

So, why has line dancing gone viral?

The craze is partly driven by social media users embracing line dancing’s easy-to-follow routines. But a post-COVID pandemic demand for gathering in community has also seen line dancing groups spring up in bars, clubs, community halls and outdoor areas.

It’s also nostalgic and accessible, with an emphasis on fun rather than skill.

While doing research on its health benefits, one of us decided to give line dancing a go. Unable to follow the steps at first, it was a lesson in humility. But a year later, Danielle is still happily pounding the floor each week in her line dancing group – and encouraging others to give this science-backed mood-booster a try.

Our research reviewed 16 studies about line dancing. Here are the health benefits we found.

1. It’s a workout

–

Line dancing is good exercise: it incorporates coordination and balance with a cardiovascular workout.

The steps can also be adapted to match the dancers’ abilities. Energetic young people might bootscoot and boogie while more mature dancers can shuffle and sway – all to the same tune.

Research has shown regular physical activity helps prevent many chronic conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and even some cancers.

In older people, line dancing has been shown to improve motor skills, flexibility and gait, reducing fall risk and helping to maintain good overall health.

2. Good for mental health

–

Our study showed line dancing boosts mental well-being, reduces anxiety and depression, and relieves stress.

This is largely due to endorphins, the pain-relieving chemicals the body releases during exercise. They improve mood and can leave dancers feeling elated and full of joy and self-confidence after a session.

But you don’t even have to participate to feel the benefits. There is evidence to suggest that watching dancing can stimulate some of the body’s mood-boosting responses and reduce stress.

3. It’s social – but you don’t need a partner

With more than 43 per cent of young people saying they feel persistently lonely, and elder isolation on the rise, finding connection with other people is more important than ever.

Research shows participating in sport – and particularly team activities – is a protective factor against loneliness.

Compared to partnered types of dance, such as ballroom, line dancing might seem like a solitary activity. But this actually means people can show up alone and still connect with others, uniting around an activity. People get involved with a community and may even develop friendships.

We found that line dancing can also break down cultural and social barriers and expand social support networks, helping to develop a sense of belonging and unity.

4. A workout for your brain, too

–

The combination of stomps, backsteps and kicks can be overwhelming at first. But the sense of achievement when you master these steps is worth it.

Studies have shown that, as line dancers become more proficient, their memory and brain function improve.

There is evidence that this can help prevent dementia and improve university students’ concentration.

5. Line dancing builds community

–

Our research found that line dancing has benefits beyond the individual.

For example, in one 2008 study, researchers interviewed 30 women aged over 60 about their involvement in line dancing. Many said it led them to become more engaged in the community, including volunteering.

But if you’re thinking of getting involved yourself, a word of warning: there may be no turning back. Line dancing can be profoundly addictive and seriously fun. SKS SKS

Watch: NYC Marathon Documentary ‘26.2: Journey to the Finish Line’

“Savor every minute of this journey.” Tribeca Films has just debuted a new documentary film titled 26.2, made by filmmaker Nicolas Heller – best known as the runner “New York Nico” on social media. The full title for it is Journey to the Finish Line of the NYC Marathon and the 34-minute short doc is out now to watch (view below). 26.2 follows four tenacious New Yorkers in the lead-up to the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon. A long time superfan of the race, Nicolas was inspired by individual stories & motivations of each runner (and walker) who chooses to participate in one of the world’s largest annual marathons. This is their honest story. “Between them, they’ve survived a stroke, cancer, a life-changing house fire, & finishing dead last in the 2023 race. They’re not professional runners. They’re people who’ve been knocked down and decided to keep moving. This isn’t a story about running fast. It’s a story about getting there at all.” This reminds me of another doc called 26.2 to Life, about a marathon inside of a prison. And this year’s other doc on running called Learning to Fly. 26.2 is another engaging & wholesome film that should inspire everyone.

Enjoy New York Nico’s doc 26.2: Journey to the Finish Line of the NYC Marathon, from YouTube:

The documentary 26.2 follows four New Yorkers training for the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon: a retired math teacher, an NYPD administrative aide, a public defender, and an elevator mechanic. Between them, they’ve survived a stroke, cancer, a life-changing house fire, and finishing dead last in 2023. This isn’t a story about running fast… It’s a story about getting there at all. Directed by Nicolas Heller, also known as @newyorknico, the film was inspired by his coverage of the NYC Marathon finish line. Created with support from New York Road Runners, and featuring NYRR’s Team Inspire. 26.2: Journey to the Finish Line of the NYC Marathon is directed by the runner / filmmaker Nicolas Heller, who has also directed quite a few other short films previously. Produced by m ss ng p eces, E 89th Street Productions, and Heller Films. This recently premiered in New York City at an event but not at any festivals, as far as we know. Tribeca will debut Heller’s 26.2 doc directly on YouTube – you can watch it above anytime. Thoughts?

Lululemon Teams Up With the NFL for First-Ever 32-Team Apparel Line

Lululemon Athletica has officially entered the licensed-fan apparel game by teaming up with the NFL to launch a collection covering all 32 teams.

Set to debut on October 28, the collection will span both men’s and women’s clothing and accessories. Items will feature team logos and draw from Lululemon’s iconic product lines—such as the men’s “Steady State” and the women’s “Define,” “Scuba,” and “Align” styles.

The rollout will happen across multiple channels: online via the NFL Shop and Fanatics platforms, in team retail stores, and internationally through localized NFL Shop sites.

For Lululemon, this marks its first foray into officially licensed NFL merchandise—moving beyond its usual yoga/athleisure stronghold and into more fan-centric sportswear.

The NFL views it as a way to bring fresher, higher-end apparel options to fans—beyond traditional jerseys—to capture a broader lifestyle-wear audience.

Hermes taps British designer to lead its menswear line

by jummy84 October 21, 2025
written by jummy84

French luxury company Hermes on Tuesday announced that a British designer, Grace Wales Bonner, is taking over its men’s pret-a-porter collection from a predecessor who held the position for nearly four decades.

Hermes taps British designer to lead its menswear line

Wales Bonner, aged in her mid-30s and a graduate of London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins art school, said in a Hermes statement she was overjoyed to be joining “such a magical house”, and called it “a dream”.

Her first collection is due to hit the catwalk in January 2027.

Wales Bonner takes over from French designer Veronique Nichanian, 71, who led the label’s menswear line for the past 37 years.

Hermes on Friday announced Nichanian’s departure, after she presents her last men’s collection in January, for the 2026-2027 Autumn-Winter shows in Paris.

The new blood at Hermes is just the latest in a series of artistic changes at the big fashion houses, notably at Chanel, Dior, Balenciaga, Loewe and Jean Paul Gaultier.

The luxury sector is currently going through a challenging period for sales globally that is impacting many companies, but Hermes has been well-protected from the buffeting.

Its sales have continued to increase, and its turnover grew more than seven percent in the first half of this year, to eight billion euros .

Wales Bonner, the daughter of an English mother and a Jamaican father, has picked up a string of awards for her innovative approach to menswear blending European tailoring and African influences.

In the past, and under her own label, she has explored themes of identity and post-colonial heritage.

In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, Wales Bonner said “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be a historian or an artist”.

Hermes’s artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas welcomed her, saying “her contemporary view of the world, of crafting and of culture, will continue to guide the men’s pret-a-porter collection”.

Vicky McClure plays down Line of Duty return rumours but hints at new project

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

The rumour mill continues to churn when it comes to Line of Duty, but while we may not have any concrete updates regarding the future of the BBC crime drama, Vicky McClure has teased a potential future project with her co-stars.

In an interview with Radio Times magazine for next week’s issue, McClure was clear that she didn’t “have any updates, I’m afraid”, regarding the future of Line of Duty.

“I don’t want to give anyone any false hope,” she explained. “We’ve all been very clear that we’d absolutely love to do another series.”

She did tease an entirely different kind of role, though, adding: “Adrian [Dunbar], Martin [Compston] and I have been talking about doing a travel show together, though. If any of us ever has any spare time, we’ll do it. Line of Duty gave us two brilliant things – our careers and our friendship.”

So, could we be getting a travelogue fronted by the Line of Duty stars sometime soon? While nothing of the sort has been confirmed, we’re sure audiences would be grateful to see the trio back on our screens in some form or another.

Line of Duty. BBC

However, it was more recently intimated that Line of Duty would be making its anticipated return with Dunbar previously stating that the BBC drama is ready to return for filming next year.

He’d told The Times: “We’re really excited about getting our hands on a Line of Duty script, to see what happens to us. Jed is writing. We’ve talked to the BBC.

“It is down to the BBC to make an announcement, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed that next year we’ll be working on a new series. No doubt Jed will think of some interesting twists and turns.”

A few months prior, it had been reported that the schedules of Dunbar, Compston and McClure had been lined up to film new episodes, with filming reportedly set to kick off in January 2026.

At the time, the BBC declined to comment on the news when approached by RadioTimes.com.

Read more:

Compston appeared to dispel those rumours though, saying that due to the actors’ busy schedules, if anything were to happen with a new season, it would be “a way off”.

While it all remains quite the mystery, we do know for certain that McClure will be back on our screens in the third instalment of heart-racing thriller, Trigger Point.

The series follows McClure’s Lana Washington, a Metropolitan Police explosives officer, who is set to investigate a bomb threat that “reveals itself to be the start of a sinister vendetta”.

The synopsis continues: “Someone is targeting individuals, and demanding revenge.

“Working alongside the Police Counterterrorism Unit, the Bomb Disposal Squad race against time to find the bomber before they claim their next victim.”

During Anushka and SRK’s appearance on the Yaaron Ki Baraat chat show nearly seven years ago, the NH10 actress shared an interesting story about her first meeting with her co-star, Shah Rukh Khan. Chanel’s New Line Under Matthieu Blazy Is Turning Heads (And Hearts) | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 October 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Chanel just stepped into a new chapter, and people are watching. Earlier this month, Matthieu Blazy revealed his first major collection for the house, and the reaction has been mostly positive. He didn’t toss out Chanel’s heritage. Instead, he tried to bring it alive again with softness, surprises, and a bit of cosmic wonder.

The runway was full of spectacle. The show was staged under giant planets and shimmering lights overhead, turning the Grand Palais into a kind of starry theater. In that setting, classic Chanel codes: tweed, camellias, structured jackets, showed up, but with fresh energy. Some jackets had frayed edges. Bags looked softened, edges less rigid. The camellia motif reappeared in abstract or shifting forms. Some pieces felt light, loose, easy-to-wear rather than stiff.

One moment people are still talking about: model Awar Odhiang closed the show with a spontaneous twist, she twirled, clapped, and embraced Blazy on stage. That unscripted burst of joy stood out. It felt like more than fashion, it was a statement about freedom inside the codes.

Blazy seems to be asking: can Chanel keep its soul but move forward? Some of the looks kept the house dress codes, but others broke them. Oversized shirts, longer hems, cleaner lines. A little edge. A little looseness. A balance of respect and experiment. In interviews, he’s spoken quietly about learning the brand from the inside out before pushing bold ideas.

This collection doesn’t feel like a radical reset. It feels like a bridge, between the weight of Chanel’s past and the energy of what might come. People at Paris Fashion Week called the debut a “reset” for the brand, a fresh start with roots.

Blazy’s challenge is steep: Chanel has an image, expectations, and a wild history. He’s only the fourth creative director in Chanel’s long story. But his debut showed a vision that feels grounded, playful, honest, and not just for the spotlight.

Fashion watchers will be curious now: how these clothes land in real streets, boutiques. How buyers and wearers respond. Blazy showed promise; now we’ll see whether that translates into real impact.
