There’s a Gary Cole for every TV fan. Now, he’s leading an ‘NCIS’ Veterans Day special

There’s a Gary Cole for everyone.

There’s a Gary Cole for every TV fan. Now, he’s leading an ‘NCIS’ Veterans Day special

Whether you know him from “The West Wing” or “Veep,” “The Good Wife” or “Office Space,” “Dodgeball” or “Midnight Caller,” you most likely know his face.

For a while he was the “hero of the schoolyard” with his daughter’s classmates for appearing in “Cadet Kelly” alongside Hilary Duff. These days, though, it’s his role as Alden Parker on the long-running CBS crime procedural “NCIS” that has him stopped in the street.

Centered on the U.S. Navy’s investigative unit in Washington, D.C., the show is currently airing Season 23.

“It’s pretty powerful, that impact,” says Cole of the program’s devoted broadcast audience. “So a lot of people have followed the show and they have followed it, some of them, forever,” he adds.

Cole’s character was brought in during Season 19 to run the team after Leroy Jethro Gibbs left. In a Veterans Day special, a first for the franchise, “NCIS” and “NCIS: Origins” will cross over with back-to-back episodes Tuesday. A historical mystery in “Origins” — featuring a guest appearance from Harmon on the show that follow Gibbs’ early career — will find its way to the modern day on “NCIS,” which airs directly after.

The Associated Press spoke to Cole about the success of the show, the real service members he’s met and those classic “NCIS” freeze frames. This conversation has been edited for clarity and brevity.

COLE: I didn’t really look at the effect of how big or small the audience would be, because today things are much different. I mean, nothing has kind of the large, overwhelming impact that television shows of 25 years did in terms of their audience, where you could be swallowed up by just one image.

…

I’m old enough to say that I was on television when, here in the States, there were three channels. That was it. Those were your choices. And once they were on and then rerun once, maybe twice if you were lucky, they really were gone.

Now … if you look hard enough, you can find pretty much anything you’ve done your whole career. It’s being broadcast somewhere.

COLE: Not so much a show. There’s probably a few network movies of the week, we used to call it, that I kind of cut my teeth on.

…

By that I don’t mean choice of material, although that was part of it too. But it was just kind of a laboratory to get comfortable in front of a camera without a lot of — if you’re on a series and it’s successful, your visibility is just there. If you’re doing a lot of learning and making mistakes and correcting them, you don’t want to do that on a weekly basis in front of everybody.

COLE: They didn’t want him to be similar to Gibbs. They certainly wanted, you know, they wanted somebody that you could buy as a leader. Our old producer, who has retired since, had a great line about, kind of, just an inside joke about the show, which is that: In the original “NCIS,” all the kids were eager to please the father, meaning Gibbs, right? They were like wondering what his reaction was going to be and would they be, you know, under the gun if they made a mistake or made a wrong move? There was a little bit of, you know, apprehension around him. And so now he flipped it and said, what if the father were to leave? And the crazy uncle shows up? And how are they going to react to them? And they’re not quite sure at first, like, “What is the story with this guy?” … And I liked that.

COLE: We’ve got a great tech guy with us named Mike Smith who has set up numerous field trips and interactions. Katrina and I visited an aircraft carrier about a year and a half ago and spent the day on what they call family day. … And we actually go to sea and they proceeded to do what they do and show us literally planes landing, planes taking off. And we got to see things that normally, you know, civilians wouldn’t see. And just to be with the sailors and interact with them. A lot of them knew the show. A lot knew other stuff I had done. We visited a real NCIS office out here in California.

COLE: They were very curious, but mostly about character stuff. They weren’t even worried about procedurals because they know, you know, it’s a television show, right? So, but, what I realized when I went in there, this is funny: Don’t tell anybody this, but I said, I looked at them and their average age, the guy that was leading them was probably 20 years younger than me. And every agent was barely 30 years old — if. So I was like, you know, based on this, if this is the reality, I should have retired 15 years ago.

COLE: No. We joke about them, they call them, what do they say? They call it a poof movement, or a poof moment. “Oh, that’s definitely gonna be a poof. You’re gonna get a poof.” POOF.

…

You know, somebody’s gonna choose it. And it’s certainly not gonna be me or anybody else in the cast, that is going to be in charge of figuring out where your poof movement is. So best to leave it to higher minds.

COLE: This might be mythological lore, I’m told that there is a sound that goes with that, right? That is, when it’s frozen? I’m told, I don’t know that I believe this, but that that is actually the voice of Don Bellisario, the original creator, into a microphone with reverb on it, where he just went, “poof.” Now, you can believe what you — let the internet go crazy now.

I was told that, and I have no reason not to believe it, you know, because I call Sean Murray the show historian, because he’s been there for 23 years, and I think he’s the one that told me that. I always forget who told me what, but you know, I’ll blame it on him.

The rising Hollywood heartthrob continues her ascent with back-to-back projects in film and television.

Hollywood newcomer Alyssa Matthews is quickly establishing herself as one of the industry’s most promising rising stars. Best known for her standout performance in the cult-favorite comedy Bottoms, Matthews is now poised for a major breakout with two exciting projects on the horizon.

Sources tell us the actor is in the final stages of joining the core cast of a highly anticipated slasher-horror television series, set to begin production in the next few months. Matthews’ role is expected to be one of the series’ core cast members, marking a pivotal step in her rapidly growing career. The series has already generated buzz within the industry for its cinematic approach to horror and its ensemble of emerging talent, with insiders noting that Matthews’ character will play a key part in the suspense-driven storyline.

Sources also confirm that Matthews has joined the cast of the upcoming feature film The Children, which is slated to begin filming soon. The addition further underscores her momentum, showcasing a range that spans both chilling horror and dynamic drama.

Trained under acclaimed acting coach Howard Fine, Matthews brings a grounded yet magnetic presence to every role. Her performances are marked by an emotional precision that feels both instinctive and cinematic, allowing her to fully disappear into character. Industry insiders note her ability to command the screen with quiet intensity, a quality that’s already distinguishing her as one of Hollywood’s most intriguing new talents.

Off-screen, Matthews’ influence is expanding into fashion. She is in the final stages of signing with a leading New York City modeling agency, signaling a crossover into high-fashion campaigns. She also recently wrapped a major campaign with a globally recognized fashion brand, further establishing her as a multifaceted force in entertainment.

Described by those who’ve worked with her as a Hollywood heartthrob in the making, Matthews exudes both poise and depth, the hallmarks of a true modern star. With a major television series and a feature film on the horizon, Alyssa Matthews is carving out a powerful space for herself in Hollywood, and her rise is only just beginning.

TikTok Is NOT the Leading Social Media Platform for Microdramas: Study

by jummy84 October 28, 2025
written by jummy84

TikTok, you’re on the clock.

A new study from Ampere Analysis has found that YouTube is the most popular social-media destination for viewers of microdramas, with nearly half (44 percent) of those who have consumed the trendy format doing so on YouTube. While vertical video may feel like the domain of TikTok (and to some degree it is: TikTok captures 38 percent of all microdrama views), YouTube’s sheer scale makes it so difficult to overcome. In September, YouTube accounted for 12.6 percent of all “TV” usage, according to Nielsen. Netflix was second with 8.3 percent — no one else claimed even five percent.

So, combined, YouTube and TikTok make up 82 percent of the microdrama viewership on social — Instagram is in there somewhere, trailer by X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Snapchat, Twitch and Threads. But who is watching these short-short drama episodes of 10 minutes or less? If not you, someone in the same room as you, statistically.

Twelve percent of internet users have consumed a microdrama on social media, Ampere found through a survey of more than 100,000 consumers. (Ampere polled 56,000 internet users aged 18-64, in two different waves, across 30 global markets.)

Leading shorts apps (and not social media ones) like DramaBox and ReelShorts have taken notice. Both are using social media platforms as distribution channels as well as feeder systems.

What should come as no surprise is the demo consuming these vertical videos. Viewers aged 18-34 are 21 percent more likely than the average viewer to have watched one of these “mini-dramas” in the past month. Nearly half (46 percent) of internet users that age watch microdramas.

The APAC (Asia-Pacific) region leads in consumption, which should also shock exactly no one. Nearly all of the existing microdrama platforms hail from China — the market is soon to be flooded with exceptions to that rule — but it is Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines, specifically, with the strongest engagement numbers.

Shraddha Kapoor confirms Chhoti Stree to drop these big hints leading into Stree 3’s storyline

by jummy84 September 27, 2025
written by jummy84

The Maddock Horror Comedy Universe is gearing up for an exciting new chapter, and this time, it’s animated. At the trailer launch event of Thamma, actor Shraddha Kapoor revealed that the franchise’s upcoming film, Chhoti Stree, will play a crucial role in setting the stage for Stree 3, including revealing Stree’s much-speculated backstory.

Bollywood star Shraddha Kapoor poses during the trailer launch of her upcoming film Thamma in Mumbai on September 26, 2025.(AFP)

Shraddha Kapoor talks about Stree 3

Calling Chhoti Stree her favourite part of the franchise, Shraddha shared her excitement: “When Dinoo (Dinesh Vijan) told me about it, I said, Sach mein aapka naam Dinesh Vision hi hona chahiye! (“When Dinoo (Dinesh Vijan) told me about it, I said, ‘Seriously, your name really should be Dinesh Vision’)”. The film, she revealed, will be a theatrical animated feature meant for kids, families, and fans of the franchise alike.

But the biggest surprise came from producer Dinesh Vijan, who confirmed that Chhoti Stree isn’t just a fun spinoff, but it’s a narrative bridge to Stree 3. “The most exciting part is that Chhoti Stree will end with a scene from Stree 3. It’ll transition from animation to live-action, and also answer the question, Stree ki backstory kya hai? (What is Stree’s backstory),” he said.

Set to release six months before Stree 3, Chhoti Stree promises both laughs and lore, making it a vital part of Maddock Films’ most ambitious horror-comedy storytelling experiment to date.

About Stree franchise

The Stree franchise has proven to be a major commercial success for Maddock Films, establishing a strong foothold in the horror-comedy genre. The first film, Stree (2018), starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, was made on a modest budget of around ₹20 crore and went on to earn over ₹180 crore worldwide.

Building on that success, Stree 2 has surpassed all expectations, grossing over ₹801.15 crore worldwide in just 35 days, according to box office reports. Alongside spin-offs like Roohi and Bhediya, the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe has now amassed a cumulative gross well over ₹1,000 crore, cementing its status as one of India’s most successful genre franchises.

Meanwhile, Thamma, which stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in pivotal roles, will be released on October 21.

Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil Had Three Strokes Leading Up to the “Big One”

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Earlier this month, Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil revealed that he suffered a stroke last Christmas, leading to the band postponing its planned Las Vegas residency. Now, the veteran rocker has disclosed that he actually had three other strokes leading up to the “big one.”

Mötley Crüe are currently in the midst of the rescheduled residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM, running through an October 3rd show (tickets available here). The concerts were originally slated to take place this past spring, but were postponed due to an at-the-time undisclosed medical issue affecting Neil.

In his interview with the Las Vegas-Review Journal a couple weeks ago, Neil revealed, “I had a stroke. My whole left side went out… I had to learn to walk again, and that was tough. The doctors said they didn’t think I’d be able to go back on stage again.”

In a new conversation with SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), Neil shared more details about his medical battle, saying he may have recovered a lot sooner had he caught the “big” stroke sooner.

“It was Christmas night, and I went to sleep,” recalled Neil. “I woke up and I couldn’t get out of bed. I’m, like, ‘What’s going on?’ And my left leg wouldn’t work, and my left arm wouldn’t work. So I had to get help out of bed. I couldn’t push myself up to get myself comfortable in bed. And I had to have help. And slowly but surely, the sensation came back in my legs.”

He continued, “[My then-girlfriend] Rain has an aunt who’s a nurse, and she called her aunt, and she said, ‘This is what’s going on with Vince,’ and [her aunt] goes, ‘He’s had a stroke.’ And by then it was just too late to go to the hospital because you have to get [there] within, like, 12 hours or something. And I was just kind of, like, ‘Oh, it’s gonna go away. It’s gonna go away.’ … I thought, ‘Oh, well, it’ll come back in a little bit.’ But it didn’t. Yeah, that was the hard part. Then I went to the hospital. They said I had a stroke, and they go, ‘We can’t do anything for you now because you’ve already had it and you’ve gone past that time’ where they give you this drug — it makes it so you’re not numb on the side.”

As for what caused the stroke, Neil explained, “Well, they said that I had a blood clot in my leg that ran up through to my brain. And they showed me — I had a neurologist come out and they took x-rays and stuff, and you see I had scars in my brain. [And they said], ‘See that’s where you had a stroke.’”

The singer also found out that he’s actually had “four strokes throughout the years. Two of ’em I didn’t even know I had. One of ’em was a mini stroke that happened and I just lost feeling in my hand. And that was it. And I got over that pretty quickly. But then this last one, it was a big one.”

Asked by Trunk about how doctors knew he had four strokes, Neil responded, “Because they could see it in your brain. It’s scarred right around the same spot. I had four scars in my brain, and the neurologist said those are all strokes.”

Neil, who’s father died of a stroke in 2021, went through months of physical therapy to get back onstage. He performed a solo show in early August, and is currently rocking at “95 percent” with Mötley Crüe as they continue their Vegas residency. “There’s things that I can’t do on stage still,” he noted. “It’s hard to run back and forth on that stage. That stage is so huge. But I’m getting used to it.”
