The Labubu Craze Hits Season 5 in ‘Ballgame’ Episode With Philadelphia Phillies

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Abbott Elementary Season 5 Episode 4, “Ballgame.”]

Abbott Elementary took the teachers out to a ballgame in the latest Season 5 episode, as select faculty enjoyed a Philadelphia Phillies game in celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week.

Before the educators hit the ballpark, though, Gregory (Tyler James Williams) observed his students playing with “Lafufus,” the knock-off version of the uber-popular toy, Labubus, which resembles little fuzzy monsters. Wondering aloud how the kids can afford Labubus, since they’re so expensive, one student, who is selling Lafufus clarifies that they’re more reasonably priced.

While you may wonder what this has to do with the Phillies game the Abbott faculty attends, it all connects to Janine’s (Quinta Brunson) close call with a stray ball, which bumps her in the head. It turns out, Janine is more than reluctant about attending the game, despite her boyfriend Gregory’s excitement, and she even pads her head with a helmet and a giant foam hat on top of that.

Eventually, she loosens up enough to take the helmet off just in time for her to get hit with the ball. As a means of compensation, the Phillies offer to have Janine and her colleagues meet their mascot, the Phillie Phanatic. While they’re pretty excited about the special treatment, it’s their opportunity to meet Phillies left fielder Kyle Schwarber.

Taking time to chat with them and sign souvenirs, Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) ends up selling some of the autographs back at school, only to learn that the student who purchased them had attached them to her stash of Lafufus, raising their prices in the process. But instead of admonishing the girl for her business acumen, Melissa is rather impressed, and so are we.

And while a Schwarber signature might be worth +$50 to an Abbott student or teacher, the player’s appearance surely means a whole lot more to viewers at home tuning into this exciting episode. What did you think of Abbott Elementary‘s venture into the live sporting event space? Let us know in the comments section below, and let us know your take on the Lafufus empire being built by one of the students.

Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan is once again the talk of the internet, and this time it’s not just because of his iconic acting. Known for his constant engagement with fans and keeping up with the latest trends, Big B recently posted a quirky video on Instagram, showcasing a new addition to his car, a Labubu doll. While the doll itself caught some attention, it was the contents of his car dashboard that got fans buzzing.

Labubu, a viral trend that has been taking over social media with celebrities flaunting the plush toy, now has a place in Bachchan’s car. In the video, Amitabh, always in high spirits, introduces Labubu with a playful message in English: “Brothers and sisters, I’m showing you Labubu, who is now in my car. See you tomorrow, Labubu. Bye.” He added the hashtag #Labubu and a few other hashtags to his post. His lighthearted interaction with the doll left fans entertained, but it was his dashboard that grabbed even more attention.

As viewers zoomed in on the video, they noticed something unusual on his car’s dashboard, a paused Hanuman Chalisa track, accompanied by a picture of Bajrangbali on the screen. The presence of the spiritual image and the paused prayer song prompted several curious reactions from his followers. Actor Karanvir Sharma humorously commented, “Sir, Hanuman Chalisa with Labubu is a must,” suggesting a fusion of spirituality and fun.

Other fans chimed in with their own takes and said, “Labbu’s meeting with Jayaji. Epic battle”. Another user lightheartedly noted, “Thank God Hanuman is there, no tension,” acknowledging the calming effect of the spiritual presence amidst the playful vibe of the doll. Yet, a few users took a more critical approach, questioning the pairing: “Sir, do you believe in all this?” while others suggested he “throw it away” due to concerns about the doll’s appropriateness.

Labubu Is Turning 10! To Celebrate, Its Creator Kasing Lung Is Collaborating With Moynat

They’re everywhere: You see them in the subway, on the streets, all over your social media feeds, and even in our street style galleries. They’re at the US Open with Naomi Osaka and on tour with pop superstar Lisa. From high-brow fashion folk to your colleagues’ toddlers and even your adult friends themselves—everyone’s succumbed to the beguiling, mischievous little creature known as Labubu, the monster toy popularized as a bag charm earlier this year. Now, you can find Labubu not just hanging from your accessories, but on the accessories themselves: Labubu creator Kasing Lung has partnered with French luxury trunkmaker Moynat to release a special capsule collection.

For those new to the Labubu craze—the creature has been something of a cult figure in Asia for a few years now—here’s one thing you should know: Labubu has siblings. Inspired by Nordic folklore, Lung created the character 10 years ago in 2015 with a trilogy of books under the franchise Monsters, which eventually gave way to an entire universe of products, from books and prints to toys and figurines, including the beloved Labubu figurines that have become so omnipresent these days.

“I will tell you, I never imagined that this would happen,” offered Lung, calling in from Hong Kong, about the ongoing Labubu craze. “The starting point of The Monsters was the story, I wanted to make a picture book about different kinds of monsters, my fans loved it, and then year after year it became more serious,” he said. “But what’s most important to me is that the project is about storytelling, that is what I’m working on with Moynat as well, about telling a story. I like to have my paintings on the bags because I want to tell stories with my painting.”

The capsule features Labubu and its siblings, Zimomo and King Mon, all on black monogram coated canvas tote bags and mini trunks. They also appear as all-over prints on leather handbags and two passport holders. Labubu specifically turns up exclusively on the small leather goods, primarily on colorful bag charms that see him rendered with the Moynat monogram all over its body.

The partnership with Moynat marks the first time Lung has opened up The Monsters to a Western luxury label. (Pronounce, the independent Shanghai-based label, has an ongoing collaboration with PopMart and Labubu—as I write this I can see a purple edition of the toy hanging from a colleague’s handbag at the Vogue offices.) “My fans, everyday they leave a message on Instagram or [via] email asking about The Monsters,” Lung said. “The question they ask the most is when we were working with a luxury brand.”

The capsule is being announced today, but will become available from October 11 in Shanghai. It will then embark on a world tour, landing in Paris during Art Basel from October 21st with further stops in Taipei in November and Hong Kong in December. It will then arrive in the US in early 2025. Did you think that the Moynat Labubu would be easier to get than the perennially sold-out figurine? Think again!
