One of the biggest surprises at New York Comic Con on October 11 came during the Mortal Kombat II panel, where co-writer Jeremy Slater announced that work has already begun on the third installment in the franchise. Slater revealed that Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema were so impressed with the upcoming sequel’s momentum that they’ve already hired him to write Mortal Kombat III, teaming up once again with series co-creators Ed Boon and John Tobias.

“Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so convinced there’s a giant fanbase out there that they already brought me on to start writing the next film,” Slater told an excited crowd. He encouraged fans to show up strong for Mortal Kombat II when it hits theaters, saying, “We want to keep making them for you.”

Slater was joined by director Simon McQuoid and cast members Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Martyn Ford. Boon, who co-created the original video game series, moderated the panel.

Mortal Kombat II introduces Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), who must fight to bring back Earthrealm’s protector against the villainous Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford). Returning stars include Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero. New characters include Adeline Rudolph as Kitana and Tati Gabrielle as Jade.

Originally set for release in October 2025, the sequel has been pushed to May 2, 2026. “We’ve created a massive summer blockbuster,” said McQuoid. “It’s going to feel huge.”

Urban teased Johnny Cage’s arc: “He starts as a broken man, forgotten by the world. But across the film, you’ll see him transform into a true Earthrealm hero.”

“Filmmaking doesn’t get much bigger than this… This is the way Mortal Kombat is meant to be seen.” WB has unveiled a quick making of featurette during New York Comic-Con for action sequel Mortal Kombat II (MK2), based on the popular video game series. This is a follow-up to the most recent live-action Mortal Kombat movie in 2021, returning again for another martial arts showdown. Fan fave champions—joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders. Let them fight! “We had up the ante on every aspect,” says the actor playing Shao Kahn. Karl Urban stars as Johnny Cage (and his movie his movie Uncaged Fury), alongside Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, and Damon Herriman, with Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, & Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion. This is just a very short promo video – and a reminder they’ve delayed the release of this movie from October (it would be out now!) until May 2026 kicking off the summer season next year.

From New Line Cinema comes the latest high-stakes installment in the blockbuster video game franchise in all its brutal glory, Mortal Kombat II. This time, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of Earthrealm & its defenders. Mortal Kombat II, also known as Mortal Kombat 2 or MK2, is once again directed by Australian filmmaker Simon McQuoid, his second movie following Mortal Kombat and many years working in the video game industry (on Call of Duty & Playstation ads, etc). The screenplay is written by Jeremy Slater. Based on the successful video game series originally created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Produced by Todd Garner, Toby Emmerich, Simon McQuoid, E. Bennett Walsh, and James Wan. Warner Bros will release McQuoid’s Mortal Kombat II sequel in theaters nationwide starting May 15th, 2026 next summer. Everyone still excited to watch this sequel?
