Kiran Rao’s Kindling Pictures Backs Bosco Bhandarkar’s ‘Shadow Hill’

Kiran Rao‘s production banner Kindling Pictures is backing commercial director Bosco Bhandarkar’s feature directorial debut “Shadow Hill: Of Spirits and Men,” which has been selected for the WAVES Film Bazaar‘s Co-Production Market.

The Bazaar is the market component of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

The film follows two men on a treasure hunt in Goa — one seeking closure about a hidden truth and the other looking for an escape from drudgery. A mysterious woman who tells tales of the past helps both men find resolution. Set against the backdrop of Goa’s transformation from a tranquil coastal region to an urban sprawl, the story blends comedic and tragic moments while exploring themes of memory, loss and human connection.

“The idea is to find love as a counterforce to cynicism,” says Bhandarkar, who drew inspiration from childhood summer vacations spent at an ancestral house in a Goan village. “We are living in times when one hopes for some faith in humanity, and I hope our film helps reflect this in some small and beautiful ways.”

The director said he wanted to address the ecological destruction caused by Goa’s booming real estate market and political corruption, noting that “the very concepts of space and time have shifted drastically for the locals in present times, and not for the best.”

Rao, who co-founded Kindling Pictures with producer Tanaji Dasgupta, has known Bhandarkar for over 25 years. “His perspective is unusual, mischievous, and deeply human,” says Rao. “Through humor and irony, he is able to peel back the surface of ordinary life and reveal its hidden layers, often through striking, poetic imagery.”

Bhandarkar has spent most of his career directing commercials. He describes himself as a daydreamer who loves “films made by filmmakers who have school bags filled with empathy.”

At Film Bazaar, Kindling Pictures is seeking co-producers, financiers and film funds. The company has invested 25% of the budget and is looking to raise additional financing while attaching strategic partners to help execute Bhandarkar’s vision.

“We believe it embodies a rare balance of humor, poignancy, and danger,” said Rao. “We are very excited about this film because it promises to be an extraordinary cinematic experience,” adds Dasgupta.

Kiran Rao on star kids vs outsiders: ‘Nepo kids’ have the obstacle of perception

The debate around the rising cost of entourage has taken over the Hindi film industry, and director Kiran Rao admits the high cost of teams is one of the reasons that pushes her tow work with newcomers. She launched three new actors–Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta and Sparsh Shrivastava–with Laapataa Ladies last year, and she asserts that they came without any such baggage.

“Organically, they just fit the scenario of an independent film and I make films that way. Even if the budgets have grown from Dhobi Ghat to Laapataa Ladies, in spirit, my filmmaking is very independent, the idea being that everybody on set is treated kind of equally. We believe in having fair working hours, but making things as tightly as possible, with as few resources and trying not to be wasteful. Fresh actors are much easier following those rules,” she says.

Having launched three outsiders with her film and seen her ex-husband, actor Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan, make their acting debuts around the same time, did she see any difference in the audience’s perception towards them? “When you have a so-called ‘nepo kid’ coming into the industry, they have a certain kind of baggage that they cannot avoid. They are constantly looked at through the lens of privilege, that they are getting there with all the kinds of shortcuts that other kids don’t have. I understand that but in most cases, now that I know so many film families, I’ve seen how hard and equally difficult sometimes their journey is. The obstacles that they have are different, they may not be worse or better, but they are the obstacles of perception,” she responds.

Elaborating further, Kiran Rao says, “In the case of any other new actor, there is no perception of you and people are willing to grow with you, understand your strengths and love you for your weaknesses. Whereas they come at a nepo kid with a different set of perceptions and expectations. So those are the things that any child from a film family has to deal with. Ultimately, your work will speak for itself and many times, it takes a film family child, many films in order to become successful. That’s the journey of most star kids in front of the camera.”

Ask her if she feels it’s actually easier for an outsider to make a mark in the film industry than a star kid, and Kiran answers in the affirmative. “I actually agree with it. I also feel that in today’s world people want to discover talent. They don’t like to be told that this person is there. They have a curiosity about stars and their children, but in order to make a person a star, they feel a responsibility,” she says.

However, Kiran highlights a much important issue. “Honestly, the conversation here to talk about is the death of stardom in some ways. There is no star system today. Stars are now being found in different ways. It’s in people with a following, who the audience look forward to seeing. They could come from a Reel, a series, a film, or it could even be a director. Those are the new stars, whose work is being followed more closely and sometimes it won’t be somebody even you and I know because everybody has their own little sort of echo chambers and following. That’s now the new world, the idea of stardom has changed,” she ends.

Kiran Abbavaram rues Telugu heroes not getting screens in TN like Pradeep Ranganathan does in AP, TG: ‘Want love too’

Kiran Abbavaram’s K Ramp and Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dude will clash in theatres later this month. The Telugu actor rued about the state of affairs in TN.

Telugu actor Kiran Abbavaram lamented the fact that Telugu actors don’t receive the same level of love in Tamil Nadu that Tamil and other language actors do in Telugu states. In an interview with Galatta Plus, Kiran compared the release of his upcoming film K Ramp in TN to Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dude in Telugu states and said this.

Kiran Abbavaram compared not getting theatres for K Ramp in Tamil Nadu to Pradeep Ranganathan easily getting them for Dude in Telugu states.

Kiran Abbavaram says no young Telugu actor has market in Tamil

Kiran stated in the interview that he recently watched Kalyani Priyadarshan’s Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra in theatres, and it was running houseful in Hyderabad even in the second week. Talking about Telugu films not receiving the same kind of attention in other states, particularly in TN, he said, “My only concern is that even Telugu heroes are making good content. But it’s not rolling there like how we are watching. People say it will be watched if the content is great. But young Telugu heroes are also making great content. Almost ten Tamil heroes have a prominent market in Telugu now. No young Telugu hero has the same in Tamil.”

Says Pradeep Ranganathan doesn’t have to struggle for screens in Telugu states

Kiran then drew parallels between how his film K Ramp will never get enough theatres in TN, but Pradeep’s Dude will not struggle in Andhra Pradesh or Telangana. “Now I want to release K Ramp in Tamil theatres, as Pradeep Ranganathan has secured theatres in Telugu for his film. I also wanted my film to be released there in that way. But I know I won’t get it. Now, when I say this, everyone will discuss logistics, stardom, and other related topics. I can’t say it’s a mafia, it’s just a business. We just want the same kind of love we are giving. I hope I get it at least for Chennai Love Story,” said Kiran.

About K Ramp and Dude

K Ramp is directed by Jains Nani and stars Kiran and Yukti Thareja in lead roles.
