Screenwriter says Kerala State Film Awards jury owes women apology over Best Lyricist to alleged abuser Vedan

The Kerala State Film Awards were announced on Monday evening. There has been backlash since then, including from Deedi Damodaran.

Filmmaker-screenwriter and founding member of Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), Deedi Damodaran took to her Facebook account on Wednesday to slam the jury of the Kerala State Film Awards. She called them out for giving the Best Lyricist award to Hirandas Murali, better known as rapper Vedan, who was accused in a rape case earlier this year. She also stated that the jury owed the women of Kerala an apology. (Also Read: Child actor Deva Nandha slams Prakash Raj after he snubs children’s categories at Kerala State Film Awards)

Vedan received bail from the court after a case was filed against him in July this year for the alleged rape of a doctor.

Deedi Damodaran slams state awards jury over platforming Vedan

Vedan was given the Best Lyricist award for penning the lyrics of the song Kuthanthram from the 2024 hit Manjummel Boys. The winners of this year’s awards were decided by a jury headed by Prakash Raj. In her Facebook post, Deedi stated that the lines by Vedan, “viyarppu thunnititta kuppayam” (the shirt stitched with sweat), were “magnificent”, but the award was“stained by blood” from the wounds of the victims. She also wrote that no song can erase or conceal that.

Deedi further wrote, “The jury’s decision amounts to a breach of trust against the government’s policy declarations at the recent film conclave that those who exploit women will not be protected,” adding, “Even if this decision cannot be reversed through legal means, the film jury owes an apology to the women of Kerala for etching such a verdict into the history of cinema.” The screenwriter made her post after Vedan celebrated his win on Instagram by writing the exact lyrics she pointed out.

Sexual assault allegations against Vedan

In 2021, Vedan was accused of alleged sexual misconduct during the MeToo movement. However, no formal complaints were filed. In July this year, a rape case was filed against Vedan at the Thrikkakara police station in Kochi, Kerala. A young doctor accused the musician of sexually assaulting her multiple times between August 2021 and March 2023 under the guise of marriage after they met via social media.

In August, the Kerala High Court granted him anticipatory bail in the case, stating that “labelling physical intimacy as rape after a relationship ceased to exist is illogical and harsh.” He was arrested on record in September and released on bail. In August, a music researcher had also filed a sexual harassment complaint against Vedan, and the Ernakulam Central police registered a case against him. A chargesheet was filed against him in October. In November, the HC amended a previous condition imposed on him, allowing him to travel abroad for work.

Kerala), Kerala offers immense potential as a destination catering to both luxury and budget travellers, travel experts said at Yaanam 2025, India’s first travel literary festival, which is being held in this coastal town.

Kerala appeals to both luxury, budget travellers: Experts at Yaanam 2025

Speaking at the session ‘Writing on Travel Destinations,’ travel documentary filmmaker Priya Ganapathy said Kerala’s tourism sector has successfully balanced luxury and budget segments, making the state a versatile destination for all travellers, according to a statement on Saturday.

“Beyond regular destinations and packages, the tourism sector should now focus on offering unique experiences through lesser-known attractions that provide travellers with memorable, offbeat encounters,” she added.

Travel documentary filmmaker Anurag Mallick highlighted North Kerala’s culturally rich traditions and vibrant rituals, such as Theyyam, as having vast untapped tourism potential. He stressed the need to showcase such festivals and regions to wider audiences to maximise their tourism benefits.

Food expert Karen Anand observed that over the past two decades, travel habits have changed significantly, with more people exploring new destinations.

This period has also seen a rise in the popularity of travel writing, photography, and video documentation of journeys, Anand said.

Actress and vlogger Anumol, sharing her solo travel experiences, said, “Travel is not just about visiting places but also about meeting people, understanding their lives, and immersing oneself in those experiences.”

During the session ‘Couch Surfing, Anyone?’ Dr Ginu Zachariah Umman, Chairman of the Kerala Food Commission, emphasised that the essence of tourism lies in leading people to authentic and unique experiences.

In a session titled ‘My Cuban Days’, journalist and author N P Ullekh, in conversation with culture and travel writer A U Faizal Khan, recounted his experiences visiting Cuba.

Citing Kerala’s captivating landscape, panellists said the state offers immense depth for travel writers to explore and discover remarkable stories.

In the session ‘Over the Mountain, Under the Sea’, Sri Lankan author and travel writer Andrew Fidel Fernando said India is a brilliant travel destination, full of untold stories.

“Once you experience one layer, you can go deeper and discover even more,” he said, commenting on India’s diversity. Fernando is also a cricket writer for ESPN Cricinfo.

Organised by Kerala Tourism at Ranga Kala Kendram at the Cliff, the October 17-19 festival brought together leading travel writers, vloggers, and social media influencers from around the world, who shared insights on sustainable and inclusive tourism to meet the needs of modern travellers.

The three-day festival is themed ‘Celebrating Words and Wanderlust’.

The Kerala Story Director Slams Filmfare Awards, Calls It A ‘Tamasha’ After Laapataa Ladies’ Big Win

The Kerala Story Director Slams Filmfare Awards, Calls It A ‘Tamasha’ After Laapataa Ladies’ Big Win

The recently concluded Filmfare Awards 2024 in Ahmedabad celebrated what many called a landmark year for Hindi cinema, with Laapataa Ladies emerging as the night’s biggest winner. The film bagged 13 trophies, including Best Film, while Abhishek Bachchan and Kartik Aaryan jointly won Best Actor, and Alia Bhatt took home Best Actress. However, not everyone was impressed. Director Sudipto Sen, best known for The Kerala Story, has lashed out at the awards, calling them a “tamasha” and accusing the organisers of promoting hypocrisy in the name of art.

Taking to Instagram, Sen shared a strongly worded note criticising the Filmfare Awards and the films that dominated this year’s ceremony. “This year Filmfare truly is an expose of Indian ‘nouvelle vague’… A blatantly plagiarised film… a film which is a tutorial of brutality and a film which did not survive the box office for more than 72 hours took away most of the crowns,” he wrote. “As expected, the best work of 2024 remains elusive. Realised why Filmfare was so vocal against The Kerala Story receiving National Awards. I am happy that this ‘wood’ community does not recognise, invite or choose us.”

Sen didn’t hold back as he criticised the glamour and perceived insincerity of Bollywood’s award culture. “We are spared from faking smiles, faking camaraderie, and most importantly, not indulging in any sycophancy,” he continued. “In the end, I am happy that we are saved from hobnobbing with this tamasha in the name of cinema in Mumbai and clicking selfies in Cannes. At least we are spared from these ugly hypocrisies and fake tapestry in the name of cinema.”

In his caption, the filmmaker elaborated further on his disillusionment with the Indian film establishment: “I never expect anything great from any Indian cinema establishment, particularly when it is media or cinema journalism. Mostly enamored by the glamour and rich world of the stars, exactly the way people from villages and small cities gather in front of Mr. Bachchan or SRK’s house. They actually have zero contribution towards cinema, cinema art, the way world media does for world cinemas.”

While Sen refrained from explicitly naming the films he criticised, many inferred his targets from the context. The “blatantly plagiarised film” appeared to be a dig at Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao. The “tutorial of brutality” was widely understood as Kill, a high-octane action film backed by Karan Johar, and the one that “did not survive the box office for more than 72 hours” likely referred to I Want To Talk.

Sen’s post quickly caught attention online, reigniting debate around credibility, favoritism, and artistic merit in Bollywood award functions. Some agreed with his sentiments, praising him for calling out what they saw as a long-standing culture of superficial celebration. Others accused him of bitterness, pointing out that The Kerala Story had already received national recognition and that dismissing other films’ artistic merit was unfair.

This isn’t the first time Sudipto Sen has stirred controversy. Just last month, he won the National Award for Best Director for The Kerala Story, which also earned the award for Best Cinematography. The film, based on the story of women from Kerala allegedly forced to convert to Islam and join ISIS, polarized audiences and critics alike. While it was hailed by some as a bold and necessary story, others condemned it as propagandist and divisive.

Despite the backlash, The Kerala Story proved to be one of the most commercially successful and talked-about films of the year, grossing over ₹250 crore worldwide. Sen’s strong words against Filmfare now underline his ongoing rift with Bollywood’s mainstream circles — a clash between what he perceives as “authentic cinema” and what he calls “fake glamour.”

For many, Sen’s post has once again raised uncomfortable but necessary questions about whether Indian film awards truly celebrate cinematic excellence or simply reward popularity and influence within the industry.

The inaugural function was marked by a traditional lamp-lighting and pooja. Director Jeethu Joseph and producer Antony Perumbavoor joined Mohanlal at the event.

The shooting of Drishyam 3, the sequel in the Drishyam series, began at SN Law College, Poothotta in Kochi on Monday. Actor Mohanlal, who recently won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, essays the lead role in the film.

Mohanlal shared several new photos as Drishyam 3 shooting started.

The inaugural function was marked by a traditional lamp-lighting and pooja. Director Jeethu Joseph and producer Antony Perumbavoor joined Mohanlal at the event.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mohanlal shared a bunch of photos. He wrote, “Bringing Georgekutty’s world alive once again…Today marks the beginning of Drishyam 3 with the Pooja. #Drishyam3 #JeethuJoseph #AashirvadCinemas #Drishyam.”

Speaking to reporters, Mohanlal expressed his happiness over receiving Indian cinema’s highest honour. On his role as Georgekutty in Drishyam’s new series, he said, “No doubt Georgekutty will create some trouble. But I have been told not to reveal much. The suspense is the excitement and catch of Drishyam 3.”

Mohanlal said that he would be travelling to New Delhi to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke award after the movie shooting inauguration event.

Drishyam (2013) and Drishyam 2 (2021) were pan-India hits and remade in multiple languages, including Hindi, Sinhala, Mandarin and Korean.

Director Jeethu Joseph said that audiences should not come with over-expectations but with curiosity. “This film is not a thriller but a family drama, focusing on how Georgekutty’s family has changed over the last four years,” he added.

Producer Antony Perumbavoor called it an unforgettable day. He also spoke about the symbolic significance of beginning Drishyam 3 soon after Mohanlal’s award announcement.

Param Sundari Review: Love, Comedy And Beauty Of Kerala But The Story Is Weak | Glamsham.com

Siddharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor’s film ‘Param Sundari’ is now in the theatres. This is a romantic comedy film, which shows a love story with a combination of North and South. The film is directed by Tushar Jalota, and Sanjay Kapoor and Manjot Singh have also played important roles in it. The film was promoted a lot. Its story, its subject and its music, along with the chemistry between Siddharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor, were discussed a lot. The promotion of the film was also put in a lot of effort. So let’s see how the film Param Sundari is.

Story
The story is very simple. The story of the film Param Sundari revolves around Siddharth Malhotra, who belongs to a rich family. The character named Param Sachdev, played by Siddharth Malhotra, asks for help from his father. In return for help, Sanjay Kapoor, playing the role of his father, gives him a challenge. Param wants to launch a dating app. His father challenges him for a month that if he finds a life partner through this app, he will invest in it. To fulfil this, Param sets out for Kerala with his friend Jaggi (Manjot Singh). Here he meets Sundari, i.e. Janhvi Kapoor. After this, many situations arise in which Param and Sundari get trapped. What will happen next in IMAX? You can guess this now.

Writing and Direction
The film Param Sundari has been written by Aarsh Vora, Tushar Jalota and Gaurav Mishra. Tushar Jalota has directed the film. If we talk about the story, there is nothing new. This is a romantic comedy film, in which a love story with a combination of North and South will be seen. The film looks good at some places. The beautiful locations of Kerala look good on screen. The cinematography of the film is colorful and grand, especially in the filming of the songs. The first part of the film is fine but the second part is particularly weak. After the interval, the film seems to be dragged due to which the pace of the film slows down.

Acting
The audience may like the chemistry between Siddharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor in the film Param Sundari. Both of them are seen together on screen for the first time. Siddharth Malhotra’s acting is fine. At some places, his cuteness and physique can attract the audience. Janhvi Kapoor’s work is good. In some scenes, she has overacted, but since the film is a comedy, it can be ignored. Sanjay Kapoor’s work is good. I liked Manjot’s work the most. His comic timing is good in the film.

Music
Sachin Jigar has given the music of this film. The music of the film Param Sundari is fine. Some songs are good. The song Pardesiya sung by Sonu Nigam is good to listen to, although this song seems to be inspired by Hariharan’s song Kehna Hi Kya.

Overall
The film Param Sundari has romance, comedy and the beauty of Kerala. Siddharth and Janhvi have chemistry but unfortunately the story made the film average. If you like Siddharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor’s films, are their fan, then you can watch the film Param Sundari. But if you are looking for something new and unique, then you may be disappointed. The film gets 3 stars from Glamsham
