Karan Johar reveals his dream cast for a modern remake of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

In 1998, Dharma Productions saw success when Karan Johar made his directorial debut with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji. The film achieved phenomenal blockbuster status, reviving the studio and solidifying its position in Bollywood. This success was followed by Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and the achievements ahead are well-known. 

 

Approximately three decades later, Karan was asked about his casting choices for the modern-day Rahul, Anjali, and Tina if Kuch Kuch Hota Hai were to be remade today. During a conversation with Sania Mirza for Myntra’s Glam Stream, Karan shared his thoughts. He said, “I think Alia would be an absolutely great Anjali. I think Ranveer Singh would be a great Rahul, and Ananya would be a great Tina.” 

To this, Sania replied, “And none of them would actually be acting that much,” to which Karan responded, “I think it would be a great pairing.” Karan added, “I think Tina could be Ananya, Janhvi, Sara — it could be any of the younger nepo babies.” 

 

Amused by the comment, Sania asked, “Have you ever launched someone because their parents told you to?” Karan firmly replied, “No. I knew their parents, but no parent ever called me and said, ‘Launch my kid.’ Never. Not once.” 

 

When Sania noted that many people might not believe him due to his image, Karan clarified, “I know they are nepo babies. I know their parents. I’ve seen them grow up in front of me. But none of their parents have ever called me — I have always been the one to call. And let me tell you, I’ve even been refused a few times.” 

 

Karan, however, has not directed any of the new generation of nepo babies. Ananya, Janhvi, and Sara, however, appeared briefly in his recent directorial film Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani for the song Heart Throb.

Filmmaker Karan Johar’s hit talk show Koffee With Karan has hosted many stars, but one big name still missing is Indian cricket star Virat Kohli. While Anushka Sharma has appeared multiple times, Karan has revealed that Virat’s absence traces back to the infamous Hardik Pandya–KL Rahul controversy.

Karan Johar has revealed he is not in favour of inviting cricketers to his chat show now.

Recently, Karan sat down with Sania Mirza on her podcast, Serving It Up With Sania where he revealed why he has never invited Virat, who is married to actor Anushka Sharma, to the show.

During the conversation, Sania asked him about the celebrity he wishes to have on the show “who keeps refusing,” Karan named Ranbir Kapoor. He shared, “He’s come before, but for the last three seasons, he’s said no.” Ranbir’s last appearance was with Ranveer Singh in 2016.

When Sania asked Karan to name someone who’s never made it to the Koffee With Karan couch, the filmmaker paused to think. As she mentioned Virat, Karan admitted that he’s never actually invited the cricketer to be on the show.

“I have never asked Virat. And now, I am not asking any cricketers after what happened with Hardik (Pandya) and (KL) Rahul. There are many who I just felt wouldn’t come, so I never asked them in the first place,” Karan revealed.

About the infamous episode

Back in 2019, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul faced massive backlash on social media after they appeared on Karan Johar’s chat show. Many called out their sexist comments and called them disrespectful towards women.

Amid controversy over the ‘inappropriate’ comments made by cricketers Hardik and KL Rahul on Koffee With Karan (KWK), their episode was pulled down by Disney+ Hotstar at that time. Both of them were suspended before India’s first ODI against Australia despite their apologies. Karan had also added that he felt responsible for what the cricketers had to go through.

Karan Johar Opens Up About Feeling Lonely After National Award Win

Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar is a single parent to twins Yash and Roohi. However, in a recent podcast with Sania Mirza on Serving It Up with Sania, Karan discussed feeling lonely without a romantic partner. He recalled how, when he went to receive his National Award in Delhi, he was asked about his plus one, and he had nobody. 

 

Karan shared that he is currently single and, referring to the song “Har Kisiko Nahi Milta Pyaar Zindagi Mein,” expressed his feelings of loneliness regarding the absence of a partner in his life. He said, “You feel the loneliest in your highs and not your lows. In your lows, you have your family, friends, parents and kids. I have two cousin sisters I am very close to, and I have my best friends. But in your highs, what do you do? I remember I got a call that I was getting a National Award. I hung up the call, and for one minute all I thought about was, ‘What do I do tonight? Whose house do I go to? Whose hand do I hold? A little pat on the back, I needed and wanted to feel happy.” 


He added, “When I went to the awards, they asked me who my plus one was, and I had no one. Everybody was coming with their partners, and my mum was not well enough to travel, and my kids were too young. It hits you hard. I do get lonely and, on many nights when I am eating alone, I don’t go to my dining table. I eat in my room so I can dilute the loneliness. But they say never say never, and when it happens, I am standing with my arms wide open like Shah Rukh Khan.” 

 

Karan further shared that the feeling of loneliness is particularly felt around New Year’s, a time when many celebrate with their partners. He copes by venting his frustration about his single status to his single friends and consciously avoids social outings with couples. He light-heartedly added that he has an impulse to “kill” those who engage in PDA when he is present. 

Karan was honoured with a National Award this year for Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in the category of Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. This film marked his return to directing after a nine-year hiatus.

Kal Ho Naa Ho remains one of Bollywood’s most classic films. Produced by Karan Johar, it features Saif Ali Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Priety Zinta in pivotal roles that are still engraved in the audience’s hearts. Kareena Kapoor Khan Made A Bold Request

During the casting of Kal Ho Naa Ho, Karan Johar wanted Kareena Kapoor to play Naina in the film. However, she demanded to be paid the same amount as Shah Rukh Khan. Eventually, Karan replaced her, and Priety Zinta came on board. In his autobiography, An Unsuitable Boy, KJO has mentioned that he was hurt and decided to replace her, as per News18.

Karan Johar wrote, “On the weekend of Mujhse Dosti Karoge’s release, I offered Kareena Kal Ho Naa Ho, and she asked for the same money that Shah Rukh Khan was getting. I said, ‘Sorry’. I was very hurt. I told my father, ‘Leave the negotiation room,’ and I called her. She didn’t take my call, and I said, ‘We’re not taking her.’ And we signed Priety Zinta instead. Kareena and I didn’t speak to each other for a year and a half. For a year, we looked through each other at parties. It was very idiotic. She was a kid; she’s a decade younger than me.”

Cold War Between Karan Johar & Kareena Kapoor Khan

This disagreement led to a rift between Karan and Kareena, which lasted nearly 18 months. It was until Karan’s father, legendary filmmaker Yash Johar, died in 2004. In the same book, he has also shared how they reconciled after a long time.“We didn’t speak for a year and a half. It was only when my father was diagnosed with cancer that she called me. She was silent, and I was silent.”

KJo further added, “She said, ‘I don’t know what to say.’ I said, ‘Don’t say anything, I know you are there.’ When he (Yash Johar) passed away, she was in Bangkok, and we still had not mended things. The moment she landed from her shoot, she came home. We spent all night just chatting. We went back to where we were. When we had fought, I said, “I am never going to speak with her again.”

Twinkle Khanna, Karan Johar and Kajol Say Physical Infidelity Is Not a Deal Breaker

In a recent episode of the talk show Two Much with Kajol and Twinkle, Twinkle Khanna, Kajol, Karan Johar, and Janhvi Kapoor had a discussion about the complexities of fidelity and relationships. During the This or That segment, the conversation highlighted the generational differences and different perspectives on infidelity. While Janhvi Kapoor expressed that physical infidelity would be a relationship-ending factor for her, Twinkle, Kajol, and Karan said that such actions might not always be considered dealbreakers.

 

The conversation shifted with the question about the comparative impact of physical versus emotional infidelity. Janhvi Kapoor then shared her perspective, saying, “No, the deal is broken.”  Karan Johar said, “Physical infidelity is not a deal breaker,” a statement which was supported by Twinkle and Kajol. Twinkle reflected on generational differences, saying, “We’re in our 50s, she’s in her 20s, and she will get into this circle soon. She hasn’t seen what we have. Raat gayi baat gayi (What’s happened, has happened).” 




 

 

The discussion highlighted that, while Janhvi Kapoor considered physical infidelity unacceptable, others emphasized more on emotional fidelity. This conversation highlighted how perspectives on fidelity and forgiveness can change with age and experience, as the guests explored the evolving nature of relationship priorities and boundaries.

 

Earlier in the episode, the panellists were asked whether love or compatibility held greater importance in marriage. Twinkle Khanna and Janhvi Kapoor highlighted the importance of love, whereas Kajol and Karan Johar prioritized compatibility. Kajol then said, “Love is the first thing to fade after marriage if you aren’t compatible.” Karan also mentioned that, as time passes, factors beyond love play a crucial role in sustaining a relationship.

 

On the question of which form of betrayal, emotional or physical, is harder to forgive, the majority of the panellists seemed to believe that emotional infidelity is more damaging. Twinkle, Karan , and Kajol expressed the view that emotional connections formed outside the relationship could potentially be more damaging to a marriage than a physical act. This perspective was in contrast to Janhvi Kapoor’s strong disapproval of physical infidelity.

Director Karan Johar has once again demonstrated that no one can beat his sense of humor combined with candor. On Twinkle Khanna and Kajol’s talk show Two Much, Karan finally broke his silence on the ongoing gossip regarding his sudden weight loss — and did so with his characteristic sense of humor.

The internet has been buzzing about Karan’s makeover for months, with many congratulating his healthier appearance and others speculating that he had been using Ozempic, a diabetes medication now trending for speeding up weight loss. Putting the speculation to rest, Karan joked about the rumors at the beginning of the episode. When Twinkle jokingly referred to him about the opulent buffet arranged for him, he retorted, *”But if you read anything on the internet, they think I don’t eat because I am on chemical substances — like Ozempic!

Twinkle played along, teasing him further: “Beta, itna injection mat liya kar! Itna dubla ho gaya hai. Mummy kya bolegi?” (Son, stop taking so many injections! You’ve become so thin. What will your mother say?). Laughing, Karan replied, “Mummy bechari kuch nahi bolti aajkal.” (My poor mother doesn’t say anything these days).

As the three approached the food table, Karan appeared visibly tickled at the number of dishes laid out. “I haven’t seen so many carbs in a while,” he stammered before joyfully spotting his favorite — katsu curry. Co-guest Janhvi Kapoor chipped in as well, revealing her comfort food of preference was paya curry.

Karan’s physical make-over has been extensively debated ever since 2024, with the director attributing his fitness regime to discipline, rigorous diet, and regular exercise. Even after his explanations, the internet gossip regarding weight-loss shots never really dissipated — until his tongue-in-cheek on-air acceptance brought the buzz full circle.

The episode also included one of Karan’s signature raw moments. In a lighthearted “Truth or Lie” segment, Janhvi dared him to tell a juicy truth and a lie. Without batting an eyelid, Karan said, “I lost my virginity when I was 26 years old, and I’ve been intimately involved with a member of your family.”

The comment left Janhvi speechless and Twinkle and Kajol laughing out loud. A few seconds later, Karan explained, “I was late to that party — that part is true — but I have not been intimate with any member of your family. Though the thought has crossed my mind a couple of times!”

With his signature blend of self-deprecating humor and frank candor, Karan Johar again converted gossip into humor — demonstrating that there’s no controversy too big when dealt with a grin.

Janhvi Kapoor has enjoyed a long association with Karan Johar and his Dharma Productions. She entered Bollywood in 2018 with Johar’s banner-backed romantic drama Dhadak. The movie was a box office hit and starred Ishaan Khatter alongside her.

Janhvi was also a part of Homebound, a Karan Johar production by Neeraj Ghaywan. The movie had its world premiere at Cannes 2025 and was shown at TIFF and IFFM. It has been chosen as India’s official entry for the 2026 Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category.

He was a fine actor and an even finer human being. His contribution to cinema will always be remembered. My prayers are with his family. Om Shanti.”

Notably, Sunny’s brother Bobby Deol co-starred with Pankaj Dheer in the 1998 film Soldier.

On the work front, Sunny is preparing for the release of Border 2, a sequel to the iconic 1997 war film. Directed by Anurag Singh, the film will feature Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, Ahan Shetty, and more. The film, reportedly set against the backdrop of the 1999 Kargil War, is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, J.P. Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta.

Taking to Instagram on Thursday, Karan shared a post featuring pictures of actors and crew members from the film’s set. What caught fans’ eyes was that Karan didn’t share a single photo of actor Salman Khan.

Karan shared behind-the-scenes photos of Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerji, Anupam Kher, Reema Lagoo and Archana Puran Singh, among others. He also shared photos of himself, his father Yash Johar and choreographer Farah Khan.

Sharing the post, Karan wrote, “27 years!!! Some beautiful and candid memories from our set of #KuchKuchHotaHai…a set filled with love, too much banter and happiness (red heart emojis). Thank you to everyone for the love you continue to give this film…it means everything to me! @dharmamovies.”

Fans ask about Salman Khan’s missing pic

Reacting to the post, Anupam Kher posted red heart emojis. Alia Bhatt dropped clapping hands. Aditi Rao Hydari shared red heart and heart eyes emojis. Manchu Lakshmi wrote, “Ufffff.” A fan of Salman Khan wrote, “Where is Aman’s pic in ur post? That was the best cameo till today.”

A person said, “No post of @beingsalmankhan, he was one of the most important characters.” A comment read, “You should have posted at least one picture of Salman Khan…!!” “Where is Salman Khan’s picture?” asked another Instagram user. “How conveniently you missed out on posting even a single pic of Salman! Exactly how she forgot and ran to SK in the movie!” read another comment.

A few fans got nostalgic too on seeing the old photos. A fan said, “A masterpiece. A film ahead of its time.” “I’ve grown up watching this movie. It’s the closest to my heart and forever will be. Thank you for this,” read a comment.

A person wrote, “One of the immortal films of Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan, which will never be repeated, and no one will come like them. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), a romantic comedy-drama film, was written and directed by Karan and produced by his father, Yash Johar. It also stars Sana Saeed, Farida Jalal, Himani Shivpuri, Johnny Lever and Parzan Dastur. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was a major commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film of 1998.

Karan’s recent directorial

Karan’s last directorial was Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023), a romantic comedy film written by Ishita Moitra, Shashank Khaitan, and Sumit Roy. The film stars Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi.
