Screenwriter says Kerala State Film Awards jury owes women apology over Best Lyricist to alleged abuser Vedan

The Kerala State Film Awards were announced on Monday evening. There has been backlash since then, including from Deedi Damodaran.

Filmmaker-screenwriter and founding member of Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), Deedi Damodaran took to her Facebook account on Wednesday to slam the jury of the Kerala State Film Awards. She called them out for giving the Best Lyricist award to Hirandas Murali, better known as rapper Vedan, who was accused in a rape case earlier this year. She also stated that the jury owed the women of Kerala an apology. (Also Read: Child actor Deva Nandha slams Prakash Raj after he snubs children’s categories at Kerala State Film Awards)

Vedan received bail from the court after a case was filed against him in July this year for the alleged rape of a doctor.

Deedi Damodaran slams state awards jury over platforming Vedan

Vedan was given the Best Lyricist award for penning the lyrics of the song Kuthanthram from the 2024 hit Manjummel Boys. The winners of this year’s awards were decided by a jury headed by Prakash Raj. In her Facebook post, Deedi stated that the lines by Vedan, “viyarppu thunnititta kuppayam” (the shirt stitched with sweat), were “magnificent”, but the award was“stained by blood” from the wounds of the victims. She also wrote that no song can erase or conceal that.

Deedi further wrote, “The jury’s decision amounts to a breach of trust against the government’s policy declarations at the recent film conclave that those who exploit women will not be protected,” adding, “Even if this decision cannot be reversed through legal means, the film jury owes an apology to the women of Kerala for etching such a verdict into the history of cinema.” The screenwriter made her post after Vedan celebrated his win on Instagram by writing the exact lyrics she pointed out.

Sexual assault allegations against Vedan

In 2021, Vedan was accused of alleged sexual misconduct during the MeToo movement. However, no formal complaints were filed. In July this year, a rape case was filed against Vedan at the Thrikkakara police station in Kochi, Kerala. A young doctor accused the musician of sexually assaulting her multiple times between August 2021 and March 2023 under the guise of marriage after they met via social media.

In August, the Kerala High Court granted him anticipatory bail in the case, stating that “labelling physical intimacy as rape after a relationship ceased to exist is illogical and harsh.” He was arrested on record in September and released on bail. In August, a music researcher had also filed a sexual harassment complaint against Vedan, and the Ernakulam Central police registered a case against him. A chargesheet was filed against him in October. In November, the HC amended a previous condition imposed on him, allowing him to travel abroad for work.

Cannes Un Certain Regard Jury Winner ‘A Poet’ Reps Colombia at Oscars

by jummy84 September 17, 2025
written by jummy84

Colombia has picked Cannes Un Certain Regard jury prizewinner “A Poet” as its submission to the 98th Academy Awards international feature category.

Expressing his delight at the honor, helmer-scribe Simón Mesa Soto said: “Since its release in Colombian theatres, ‘A Poet’ has been beautifully received by audiences. Many Colombians have seen it and have connected with our poet. That’s what has excited us the most. Now, knowing that we will represent Colombia on the road to the Oscars is a huge honor and the beginning of a journey that we hope will open a new chapter for Colombian cinema.”

Described by Variety as a “hilarious fable about trying to lead a creative life and failing miserably at making ends meet,” the dark comedy follows failed poet Oscar Restrepo, played by non-pro Ubeimar Rios, whose life is falling apart. He finds a chance at redeeming himself when he meets a talented young poetess and takes her under his wing. But as he gets more involved in guiding her, he begins to wonder if poetry really is the best thing for her.

The film shifts tonally between comedy, drama, parody and tragedy – making it, according to Mesa Soto, his most personal work to date.

“Those films about writers or poets often seem made for the First World – I wanted to create a version of that from the perspective of Colombia, from this tropical, complex, and unique place,” he told Variety in an earlier interview.

“As I was finishing my first film, I felt overwhelmed and somewhat disillusioned with filmmaking and art – it’s so hard, especially in Colombia. I even considered quitting cinema altogether. I’m also a university professor, so I thought maybe I’d just focus on teaching. I imagined myself in 20 years as a kind of bohemian professor, living off his past, like some of the poet-like teachers I knew in Medellín – eccentric, stuck in a surreal world where they believed they were great artists. That image haunted me. I thought: what if I made a film about the worst version of myself in 20 years if I gave up on cinema?” he said.

“A Poet” was shot in Medellín with a combined cast of pros and non-pros that includes Rebeca Andrade, Guillermo Cardona, Allison Correa, Margarita Soto and Humberto Restrepo.

Colombia has been nominated for an Oscar once so far with “Ciro Guerra’s “Embrace of the Serpent” in 2015. Its next opportunity came with “Birds of Passage,” co-directed by Guerra and Cristina Gallego, which made the shortlist in 2018.

Juan Sarmiento G., Manuel Ruiz Montealegre and Mesa Soto serve as producers in the Colombia-Germany-Sweden co-production. Its co-producers are Katharina Bergfeld, David Herdies, Michael Krotkiewski, Heino Deckert and Kristina Börjeson.

Arthouse distributor 1-2 Special releases the film in North America while Luxbox handles international sales.

The Oscar international feature shortlist will be announced on Dec. 16 and the final five nominees will be announced on Jan. 22.

Deepika Padukone has added another feather to her global cap, being shortlisted as one of the jury members of the coveted LVMH Prize 2025. The luxury fashion group made the announcement on Instagram with a striking image of the actress, hailing her global impact and influence. The announcement read: “DEEPIKA PADUKONE FOR LOUIS VUITTON: 2025 LVMH PRIZE JURY MEMBER.”. We’re thrilled to announce that the iconic Deepika Padukone will serve as a jury member for this year’s LVMH Prize final.”

The Jury and Prize Details

Some of these include Sarah Burton, Jonathan Anderson, Nicolas Ghesquière (Louis Vuitton Women), Marc Jacobs, Nigo (Kenzo), Phoebe Philo, Stella McCartney, Silvia Venturini Fendi, and Pharrell Williams, among others.

On the 3rd of September 2025, at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, this distinguished panel will crown one winner out of eight finalists of the 12th installment. The LVMH Prize has long been considered a platform for up-and-coming designers, sending numerous young brands to the international fashion stage.

Deepika’s Chic Airport Look

She is also announced as the leading lady in director Atlee’s next untitled project with Allu Arjun. Bong Joon Ho To Serve As Marrakech Film Festival Jury President

by jummy84 August 29, 2025
written by jummy84

Bong Joon Ho will serve as the jury president of this year’s Marrakech Film Festival.

This year’s event runs from November 28 to December 6. The jury awards the Étoile d’Or to one of the 14 first and second feature-length films in the international competition.

“For many years, Marrakech has been a champion of fresh, beautiful films. I’m delighted and honored to be part of that tradition,” Bong said in a statement. “I look forward to sharing a powerful cinematic experience with the festival audience and reflecting on the true value of ‘cinema.’  Our anticipation and excitement will be palpable in front of the big screens of Marrakech.”

Director Bong is coming off the release of his eighth feature, Mickey 17. Adapted from Edward Ashton’s 2022 sci-fi novel of ‘Mickey 7’, Mickey 17 revolves around a directionless man living in a near future who signs up for a job as an “expendable”, or disposable employee sent on dangerous missions who is automatically regenerated if he perishes on the job. Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo star in the film.

Bong’s other credits include Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000), Memories of Murder (2003), The Host (2006), Mother (2009), Snowpiercer (2013), Okja (2017), and the history-making Parasite (2019).

In March, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles opened the exhibition Director’s Inspiration: Bong Joon Ho. It is the first-ever exhibition dedicated to the Oscar-winning director and traces his creative development through his films and the films that most influenced him. The exhibition will run until January 10th, 2027.
