Actor Boman Irani Talked About His Struggle With Dyslexia
Boman Irani Stated How One Should Never Let Difficulties Define Them (Photo Credit –Instagram)

Boman Irani is one of the most versatile actors in the Bollywood industry. He is popularly known for his outstanding roles in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., Housefull 3, Jolly LLB, and 3 Idiots, among other notable films. Boman marked his acting debut at the age of 42 with the film Josh in 2000. However, his life before entering Hindi cinema wasn’t always easy since his father passed away before he was born. Let’s revisit the time when he opened up about childhood struggles with stammering. Read on to know more.

Boman Irani Reflected On Childhood Struggle With Dyslexia

According to iDiva, in an interview with ANI, Boman Irani shared his struggle with dyslexia and highlighted that no one should ever let their learning difficulties define them. He said, “No human being’s DNA is identical. Right? Their structural, or maybe their dyslexia, or some aptitude, or the left brain, or the right brain, or there are different forms of autism, light spectrum, heavy spectrum. And everybody should use their ability or their disability to their advantage.”

Boman Irani On His Memory

“I always thought that when I was in school, I could not understand mathematics. And that does not define me. What defines me then? My ability to communicate. My ability to tell stories. My ability to use my body. My ability to use my voice. Use that,” the actor further stated.

“I have a great memory for certain things. I have no memory for numbers. Zero. So, you can teach me arithmetic for hours, I will never understand it. So, that is society’s way of judging you. I don’t get judged like that. I get judged by my own personal competence. So, when I was 11 years old, I saw this scene in a movie. I still have that clear memory, maybe because of some disability or ability. So, I just feel, one must never feel inferior to anybody,” Boman Irani went on to say.

Boman Irani On Working In Khosla Ka Ghosla

Further talking about his film Khosla Ka Ghosla, Boman said, “Khosla Ka Ghosla was a big, big thing for me as an actor. As a performer. Everybody was very sceptical of me doing this role, because I’m a Parsi from South Bombay, and I’m playing a Punjabi from Delhi. And, yeh nahi kar payega (won’t be able to perform it). So, I said, ‘No, no, no, the moment you say nahi kar payega na, toh maine challenge le liya (took it as a challenge). Khatam ho gaya (and that was it).’ And then you work harder and harder and harder to do the insurmountable.”

The actor then said, “So, in that sense, it was, for me, very special. And then people couldn’t believe that I’m Parsi from South Bombay, behaving the way this character was behaving.”

However, she’s now embracing these tags as her crown. She shares the day she stopped explaining herself was the day she felt truly free.

Malaika Arora’s last public relationship was with actor Arjun Kapoor.

On taking control of her own narrative

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Malaika opened up about being judged throughout her life, often labeled as ‘too bold’ or ‘too outspoken’.

Looking back at how tough it was to take control of her own narrative, Malaika reveals that the criticism and judgments stopped when she stopped justifying herself. That being said, she doesn’t feel the need to explain herself anymore.

“It was tough because people love to tell you what you should or shouldn’t be. I was judged for my career, my clothes, my relationships – you name it. But the day I stopped explaining myself was the day I felt free. My biggest takeaway? The only narrative that matters is the one you write for yourself,” Malaika said.

Malaika, who was previously married to actor-producer Arbaaz Khan, with whom she shares a son, admits that people called her “too loud, too much, too bold” all the time.

“I’ve been called too bold, too outspoken, too everything. And honestly? I wear it like a crown now. If I’m “too much” for someone, they’re probably not enough for me,” shares the star, whose last public relationship was with actor Arjun Kapoor.

On her work reflecting her life

There are times when Malaika stumbles upon projects and collaborations that mirror her journey. She grabs it with pride and joy. Her latest association with cosmetics brand HYUE as the face of its new campaign titled Own It.

“Whether in fashion, fitness, or just the choices I’ve made, I’ve never followed a formula. I’ve always believed that real confidence comes when you stop performing for the world and start living for yourself,” says the mother of one.

“It (the association) felt like they were telling my story through beauty. I’ve had to fight labels, opinions, and expectations all my life. So Own It isn’t just a tagline to me – it’s my lived reality,” she added.

On struggle with self-doubt

Like many, Malaika isn’t immune to self-doubt, and there are days when uncertainty creeps in, leaving her questioning herself. However, she has learnt to embrace those moments with kindness.

“Self-doubt is human—it never really disappears. There are days when I question myself, just like anyone else. But over the years, I’ve learned to meet those moments with kindness rather than criticism,” Malaika confesses.

She adds, “Confidence, for me, isn’t about never doubting—it’s about moving forward with grace despite it.”
