“Why are you doing this to me?” Jump right in! Independent Film Company has revealed the first official trailer for The Plague, one of the most intriguing indie film discoveries of 2025. This first premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews from critics, calling out everything from the cinematography to the haunting score (heard in this trailer) to these performances from the kids. From writer / director Charlie Polinger – a socially awkward tween endures the ruthless hierarchy while at a water polo camp, his anxiety spiraling into psychological turmoil over the summer. This stars Joel Edgerton as their coach, Everett Blunck as Ben, Kayo Martin as Jake, and Kenny Rasmussen as Eli. The film is a clever, slick thriller about bullying and the way kids pick on other kids; it’s not horror despite the title. I’m lucky to be quoted in this trailer from my Cannes review: “this is proper filmmaking firing on all cylinders.” It’s out in theaters at Christmas first, then expands to more theaters in early 2026. Keep an eye out for this film coming up soon.

Here’s the first official trailer for Charlie Polinger’s film The Plague, direct from IFC’s YouTube:

The Plague Film Trailer

“Have you been exposed?” 🤽 At an all-boys water polo camp, a socially anxious twelve-year-old is pulled into a cruel tradition targeting an outcast with an illness they call “The Plague.” But as the lines between game and reality blur, he fears the joke might be hiding something real. The Plague is directed by up-and-coming American filmmaker Charlie Polinger, making his feature directorial debut after many other short films previously. Produced by Derek Dauchy, Roy Lee, Lucy McKendrick, Steven Schneider, Lizzie Shapiro. This initially premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year (read our review). IFC Films will debut Polinger’s The Plague film in select US theaters starting on December 24th, 2025 at the end of the year – with a wide release on January 2nd, 2026 just after New Years. Highly recommend catching this…

NBA Star Joel Embiid Fined $50K for Grabbing His Crotch After Scoring vs. Celtics

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid, the reigning 2023 NBA MVP, has been fined $50,000 for making what the league called a “lewd gesture” during Friday’s game against the Boston Celtics.

According to the league’s statement, Embiid celebrated an and-one play in the first quarter by grabbing his crotch while facing the Boston crowd — a move that violates the NBA’s conduct policy.

This isn’t the first time the 30-year-old All-Star has been penalized for similar on-court behavior. He was fined $25,000 in January 2023, $35,000 in October 2023, and $75,000 in December 2024 for the same type of “crotch-grab” celebration.

After the latest fine, Embiid posted on social media, saying, “Y’all better start fining the refs for doing the ‘blocking foul’ gesture since I’m not allowed to do it.” The post quickly went viral as fans debated whether the league was being overly strict or simply consistent.

Despite the backlash, Embiid remains one of the NBA’s most dominant players — averaging over 30 points per game and serving as the face of the Philadelphia 76ers franchise.

Lazarus ending explained | What does Joel find out about his father and sister’s deaths?

by jummy84 October 22, 2025

*Warning: This article contains spoilers for the final episode of Lazarus.*

After receiving the tragic news that his father (Bill Nighy) had died by suicide, Joel “Laz” Lazarus (Sam Claflin) not only started to obsess over what really happened to his esteemed dad, but also started to literally live through his memories.

The six-part series follows Laz as he struggles to make sense of the events leading up to his father’s death, with all manner of supernatural happenings unfolding once Laz steps foot in his father’s office.

Getting a better idea of his father’s clients and his way of working with them, Laz thought he found the guy who could’ve murdered Dr L in the form of serial killer and former client Arlo Jones (Jack Deam). But one mention of another character by Arlo puts Laz further down the path for answers.

So, what happened to Joel’s father? Read on to find out what unfolded in the final episode of Prime Video’s Lazarus.

Lazarus ending explained: What does Laz find out about his father’s death?

Laz is convinced that something untoward had happened to his father, floating around the theory that he could’ve been murdered. When Laz thinks he’s found all the clues leading back to serial killer Arlo Jones, Arlo actually drops a name that Laz wasn’t expecting: Detective Alison Brown (Kate Ashfield).

Knowing that Alison is Seth’s (David Fynn) boss, Laz takes the information he’s gathered so far on her to him in confidence. He’s found clear lies that she’s told him, such as Alison lying that she knew anything about a cold-case that Laz had information about. In reality, she had actually been the lead detective on the case. Immediately suspicious of her, Laz tells Seth what he’s found and Seth is initially trepidatious to confront his boss, with the pair even getting into a physical altercation. But when he reads the files, the next thing we see is them both waiting to meet Alison.

Laz informs her that both cases of Arlo and murdered Imogen Carswood (Virge Gilchrist) have links to his father, with Arlo being a patient and Imogen being Dr L’s lover. They weren’t the only ones, with Laz explaining that Father Frank (Keith Bartlett) made a video before his death stating his innocence and said that the real killer is still at large. The very video was never released or seen by anyone but was apparently given to Alison.

Laz says that he thinks that Alison was seeking out vulnerable people at Dr L’s practice and scapegoating them for violent crimes, eventually getting into a heated confrontation with Dr L over it and killing him.

When Alison asks Seth to go and get her a glass of water, we don’t see the conversation that unfolds between her and Laz but we do see her knock Laz over then run over and tase Seth. Laz chases her in his car and then it turns to on-foot after she crashes her car. Alison runs out into a road and trips over a bike, but is then run over by an oncoming bus and killed.

Afterwards, we see Laz remembering his final interaction with Alison where she tells Laz to let everything go and presents a cassette tape. At the crime scene, he picked up said tape from her pocket and takes it for himself.

Elsewhere, we see Aidan going to visit Laura (Roisin Gallagher) to speak to her about his father, Laz. He talks about secrets and promises, but we don’t see the extent of their meeting.

Laz returns to his father’s office with the tape and starts to play it, surprised to hear Alison confronting Dr L on it. The scene plays out before us and we see a stressed Alison confronting Dr L about what they’ve done. She feels guilty but Dr L explains that there’s no need to feel guilty, labelling it as a “useless emotion”.

It becomes clear that for years, the pair of them played the system for their own benefits. Dr L believed these patients were violent individuals and as a way of imprisoning them, got Alison to link them to crimes they hadn’t committed.

Alison got lots of awards and acclaim but saw the light and no longer agrees with Dr L’s way of working. She confronts Dr L about his murder of Imogen, which he doesn’t deny and instead, says he loved her but killed her to “end her suffering”. Alison realises that the information that Dr L has been giving her is not only untrue, but only as a way of deflecting attention away from him and his own crimes.

Alison says that she can’t just let all of this go, with it becoming clear that Alison has already arrived with a plan in mind. She hands Dr L a gun, telling him what he could write a suicide note and offering it up as a solution where his secrets die with him. While he does hold up the gun and point it at Alison, he’s unable to pull the trigger and resolves himself to her proposed plan.

He has a vision of Sutton and wonders whether he’ll see her in an afterlife, appearing to make peace with the impromptu suicide plot. While Alison says that she wishes there was another way to end this, Dr L says that there isn’t and asks to be alone. He calls Joel but we see Joel reject the call whilst working so Dr L writes a note and then shoots himself.

In the present, Laz is visited by the ghost of his father and confronts him about his murders. Dr L states that Alison killed him and seems to double down on his own crimes, talking about the ways in which his violent crimes “saved” them. They then share a heart-to-heart about their love for each other, with Dr L saying that there’s always the fear that sons will end up like their fathers. He then says goodbye to Laz for what appears to be the final time.

In a montage of scenes, we see how things have ended up for all the characters who appear resolved but stony faced in their decisions. Laz shows his father’s suicide note to his sister Jenna (Alexandra Roach) and proclaims that it’s over, appearing somewhat lighter as he makes his way to go and see Laura.

Has Laz been imagining things all along?

Once Laz leaves the house, Jenna finds multiple boxes of tapes of their father’s in Laz’s room. It’s clear that he’s been listening to them all, with Jenna listening to the tapes of Arlo, Cassandra and more.

So, that begs the question of whether or not everything he had been experiencing had just been in his head all along.

While we know that Laz has obviously been imagining these meetings with his father and former patients, it becomes more apparent that perhaps he’s just been holed up in his room listening to the tapes rather than going to Dr L’s office.

What happens at the end with Laz and Aidan?

Making his way to Laura’s home, we then see Laz approaching her house and finding her door unlocked. Once inside, he doesn’t hear Laura after he calls out for her and looks for her.

When he reaches her living room, he sees things looking like an altercation has unfolded and it’s clear something has happened. When he turns around, he sees Aidan standing in the doorway with a curved knife in his hand, looking blankly back at Laz before saying “I’m sorry”.

So, it’s clear that Aidan has attacked Laura but in terms of whether she’s alive or not, that’s left on a cliffhanger.

Joel Kinnaman in Frozen Lake Action Thriller ‘Ice Fall’ Official Trailer

“I found it…” “Where’s the rest of it?” Aura Entertainment has unveiled an official trailer for a movie called Ice Fall, an action thriller made by filmmaker Stefan Ruzowitzky (best known for The Counterfeiters movie in 2007). Alas this is another of these junky action movies being dumped direct-to-video like the old days, but now that just means out on VOD right away. And, surprise surprise, it doesn’t look any good. The story revolves around a young Native American game warden who captures a notorious poacher only to learn that the poacher is aware of the location of a plane carrying millions of dollars that has crashed in a frozen lake. When criminals & corrupt cops close in, the unlikely pair must fight to survive & escape across the ice. This stars Danny Huston, Joel Kinnaman, Graham Greene, Frida Gustavsson, and DeVaughn Nixon. Aside from this being a Cliffhanger ripoff, this whole movie looks absolutely awful… Not even VOD worthy.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Stefan Ruzowitzky’s action movie Ice Fall, direct from YouTube:

“To Find Redemption, You’ll Have to Break Through.” 🧊 A young Indigenous game warden arrests a notorious poacher, only to learn he knows the location of a plane full of cash that crashed in a frozen lake. When criminals and corrupt cops close in, the unlikely pair must fight to survive and escape across the melting ice. Ice Fall is directed by Austrian filmmaker Stefan Ruzowitzky, director of the films Tempo, The Inheritors, Anatomy 1 & 2, All the Queen’s Men, The Counterfeiters, Deadfall, Radical Evil, Cold Hell, Patient Zero, Narcissus and Goldmund, Hinterland, and the series “8 Days” & “Barbarians”. The screenplay is written by Steve Isles and George Mahaffey. Produced by Dimo Aleksandrov, Vladimir Artemenko, Addam Bramich, Gary Hamilton, Ryan Hamilton, Robert Van Norden, & Ying Ye. Aura Entertainment will debut Ruzowitzky’s Ice Fall movie direct-to-VOD starting November 4th, 2025 this fall. Anyone want to watch?

“Do you think bad things that we do follow us through life?” Netflix has revealed the stunning main official trailer for one of the best films of the year – Train Dreams, by filmmaker Clint Bentley (writer / producer on Sing Sing, director of Jockey before this). Train Dreams premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to great reviews (here’s mine). Netflix is properly giving this a theatrical release – playing in theaters exclusively in November for two weeks before it arrives for streaming. The breathtakingly beautiful film is the moving portrait of Robert Grainier, a logger and railroad worker who leads a life of unexpected depth and beauty in the rapidly-changing America of the early 20th Century. It follows him throughout a great deal of his life, through trials and tribulations, as he watches the world change right before his eyes. It’s an incredible film. With a score composed by Bryce Dessner. Train Dreams stars Joel Edgerton as Robert, Felicity Jones, Nathaniel Arcand, Clifton Collins Jr., John Diehl, Paul Schneider, with Kerry Condon and William H. Macy. Narrated by Will Patton. The film has been earning more raves playing at festivals all year & I’m looking forward to it releasing soon so everyone can finally watch it. Enjoy.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Clint Bentley’s film Train Dreams, direct from Netflix’s YouTube:

You can rewatch the initial teaser trailer for Clint Bentley’s Train Dreams film right here for the first look.

“A staggering work of art.” Based on Denis Johnson’s beloved novella, set during the early 20th Century, Train Dreams is the moving portrait of Robert Grainier (starring Joel Edgerton), a logger and railroad worker who leads a life of unexpected depth and beauty in the rapidly-changing America of the early 20th Century. Train Dreams is directed by acclaimed American filmmaker Clint Bentley, director of the film Jockey previously, plus a few shorts, and a produce / writer on the Oscar-nominated film Sing Sing. The screenplay is written by Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar (director of Sing Sing), based on the novella of the same name by Denis Johnson. It’s produced by Marissa McMahon, Teddy Schwarzman, William Janowitz, Ashley Schlaifer, Michael Heimler. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (read our review). Netflix will debut Bentley’s Train Dreams in select theaters first on November 7th, 2025, then streaming on Netflix worldwide starting November 21st. How does that look? Want to watch?

Joel Dommett admits NTAs 30th anniversary hosting pressure and reveals his standout TV show

Joel Dommett admits NTAs 30th anniversary hosting pressure and reveals his standout TV show

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

The likes of the critically-acclaimed Adolescence will be going head-to-head with Rivals, MobLand, Code of Silence and Ludwig in the New Drama category. Meanwhile, Alison Hammond, Claudia Winkleman, Stacey Solomon, Gary Lineker and Ant & Dec are all nominated in the TV presenter category.

One presenter missing from that list is Joel Dommett, and for good reason. The comedian steps back into his hosting role for a fifth year, which he admitted was rather daunting prospect as the ceremony heads into its 30th year.

“It does add to the pressure a little bit because it makes everyone sort of go back and look at how it’s been in the past,” Dommett told RadioTimes.com in an exclusive interview ahead of the NTAs.

He continued: “This show has been hosted by Trevor McDonald, by Dermot [O’Lear], obviously, and David Walliams, like these really great, huge people. And it feels really, really cool to be a part of whatever that history is.

“Obviously everyone’s looking back and looking at all those amazing moments that have happened over the over the years, and it just feels really mad to be the 30th, but it’s really exciting to put the show together, because [it] means you’ve got a context for the whole show. So it feels like there’s something that we can hang everything on a little bit, making it more intriguing to the viewer.”

As for what Dommett and the NTA team have planned, the presenter was careful not to reveal too much. He did admit it would be “fantastic” if Giant Joel made an appearance.

However, fans of The Masked Singer shouldn’t get their hopes up too quickly, as the host told RadioTimes.com: “The trouble is to get Giant Joel out of storage and then you don’t win, would be quite a big expense.”

Taking place at London’s O2 arena, the awards will be broadcast live on ITV on Wednesday 10th September, with a host of famous faces in attendance to see if the public has voted in their favour.

Additional nominees include Owen Cooper and Stephen Graham for their powerful performances in Adolescence, as well as Tom Hardy for MobLand, Rose Ayling-Ellis for Code of Silence and Brenda Blethyn for her emotional final turn in Vera.

Owen Cooper and Stephen Graham as Jamie and Eddie Miller in Adolescence. They are in a prison cell, looking ahead.

But it’s not just drama leading the crusade, with the likes of Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel, Richard Osman’s House of Games, The 1% Club and The Chase all nominated in the Quiz Show category, as well as The Traitors, I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, Love Island and Race Across the World nominated for Reality Competition.

When asked which of the many programmes aired throughout the year across major broadcasters and streamers was his favourite, Dommett picked two TV shows that aired in the time period he’s been hosting the event.

He told RadioTimes.com: “You look at something like Mr Bates vs The Post Office, [that was] so important. Adolescence this year, which is really important for [getting] us all talking and conversation and politicians talking about all that stuff. I think it’s really interesting. Those are some huge shows.”

If you want to know who else is up for an NTA this year, you can find a full list below – vote free online.

The National Television Awards 2025 will be broadcast live on ITV on Wednesday 10th September from 8pm.
