Spotify’s Joe Hadley Talks ARIA Awards Partnership

The Kid LAROI has seen the world, and, at times, owned it with a string of chart hits, awards and records smashed. On Monday night, Nov. 17, the inner-Sydney raised, Los Angles-based singer returned home in triumphant fashion for a secret gig, a launch pad for ARIAs Week.

Performing with a four-piece backing band, and wearing an all-black ensemble, including a black tie and leather jacket, LAROI is grateful and in a soulful mood, laughing at times as he slides through a mid-tempo collection of songs.

Gone are the hoodies, baggies and the floppy blonde locks. This 22-year-old is all grown up.

“It’s been a crazy last year. I don’t know how to process it still,” he tells the gathering at Cell Block Theatre in Darlinghurst, where the likes of Ninajirachi, Baker Boy and members of the Wiggles watch on.

When he last time performed on home soil, exactly a year ago, LAROI played arenas for his The First Time tour, and at Accor Stadium, for the NRL Grand Final. On Monday, for this inaugural Spotify Artist Party, LAROI played to a space smaller than some of the L.A. parties he attends.

ARIAs Week is always a special time of year. The Australian sun is typically baking in mid-to-late November, the holiday period is closing in, and the ARIA Awards, the national recording industry’s flagship event, is the crescendo for the year in music.

Homegrown stars Dom Dolla, Missy Higgins, Amy Shark and many more will stroll the red carpet, and brave the heat, alongside internationals Kacey Musgraves and Olivia Dean.

LAROI won’t be there. He bailed for a flight early Tuesday. The Kid admittedly has work to do setting up his next record, but he played his part in this annual celebration of Aussie music.

Spotify wants in, too. 2025 marks the first in the streaming giant’s three-year partnership with the ARIA Awards, and comes at a time when domestic artists are struggling to impact the national charts, the official singles tally in particular.

According to data supplied by Spotify, this campaign has already driven hundreds of thousands of additional streams for ARIA-nominated artists, and included 800-plus “high-impact” placements across Australia and key global markets, including the United States, United Kingdom, Korea and Japan.

Ahead of the big show, more than 250,000 Australians have already cast votes in-app for the public-voted categories, including best music festival, a new category. That result is said to surpass total engagement for the past two years combined.

Billboard caught up with Joe Hadley, Spotify’s global head of music partnerships & audience, to peel back the layers on the ARIAs collaboration.

Picasa

Billboard: Let’s talk about the three-year partnership, how that came about and why?

Joe Hadley: If you were to just zoom out and look at our partnership strategy as a whole, we really want to show up as a company where culture is happening, in a way that we can be supportive of both the industry and the artists.

When we were looking at the ARIAs, it was a no-brainer to show up here for this community.

It’s not about sponsoring an event. It’s about creating something together with the artists and the labels and our partners to build long-lasting impact.

You worked closely with the Music Awards Japan. Were there any lessons to learn from that?

That was a little bit different. It was the first year that something like that had happened in Japan. It was an incredible moment, so we were really in it with them from the beginning, to build something special. The ARIAs are long-established. We wanted to make sure that if we were to partner, we could amplify and take a national event and make it truly global, so we’ve worked really hard in partnership with the ARIA to do that. One thing you’ll hear me keep repeating through this is we’re taking something that has been a truly incredible national event and helping to globalize it.

Spotify is traditionally looked at as a digital company. We wanted too show up in real life in places where it matters, so seeing the artist-facing billboards in-person adds another layer of realness, to what we’re doing. But then having the event, the party with some incredible performances, that was also a key part of bringing this all together.

Do you have any takeaways from the ARIAs’ in-app voting?

What I think is more interesting is that the last couple of years, the most voted-for category has been international artist of the year, and with this shift to in-app voting on Spotify, that’s now changed to song of the year, which is obviously local artists. Which is a really incredible moment for us in the ARIAs to really push local music.

Is Australian music having a moment, or is it anywhere near having a moment?

Australian music is always having a moment. Dance and electronic music is leading the global breakthrough story. Dom Dollar, FISHER, Ninajirachi are in that genre and it’s having a real explosive moment right now.

Bad Company’s Rock Hall Performance Features Chris Robinson, Bryan Adams, Joe Perry, Nancy Wilson

Bad Company were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by Mick Fleetwood on Saturday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

After Fleetwood sang the praises of the band during his speech, founding Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke was joined onstage by the Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson, Heart’s Nancy Wilson, and Aerosmith’s Joe Perry for a performance of “Feel Like Makin’ Love” that started out with a little technical glitch.

Bryan Adams then took over the mic for “Can’t Get Enough,” and while Robinson and Adams both gave it their all, it’s hard to match the powerhouse vocals of legendary Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers.

Unfortunately, Rodgers had to bow out of the ceremony a week ago due to health reasons, stating, “My hope was to be at the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and to perform for the fans, but at this time I have to prioritize my health. I have no problem singing, it’s the stress of everything else.”

Following the performance, Kirke accepted the honor from Fleetwood, and immediately acknowledged Rodgers, calling him one of the greatest singers of all time. The drummer also paid tribute to late member Mick Ralphs, who died earlier this year, and Boz Burrell, who passed away in 2006.

A video message from Rodgers followed, who dedicated the honor to the band’s fans, ending with, “My prayer for us is that we all choose love.

The 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony aired live on Disney+ on Saturday, November 8th, and will be available to stream on-demand following the ceremony. Find our full coverage here.

Joe Jonas Reacts to Backlash Over Jonas Brothers’ World Series Set

by jummy84 October 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Jonas Brothers, who are Stand Up to Cancer ambassadors, gave a surprise performance during the 2025 World Series that had some baseball fans taking to social media to criticize their appearance.

On Saturday, the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers competed in Game Two of the World Series at Toronto’s Rogers Centre. After the fifth inning, the game was paused for a Stand up to Cancer tribute. A Major League Baseball tradition since 2009, the tribute features those in attendance holding up placards honoring people who have been affected by cancer. At the game yesterday, baseball fans and players alike participated in the moment.

Then, the band were surprise-introduced by an announcer, who said Jonas Brothers would perform “I Can’t Lose,” which was “dedicated to everyone standing up to cancer.” Kicking their performance off with Joe Jonas holding up a placard for their dad, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2017, the band delivered their performance in the stadium in an area overlooking the field.

While they performed, they were surrounded by fans who sang along, but once they were done, it appeared some baseball fans were less enthusiastic about their surprise set. Some who were displeased took to the internet. One person posted “Do this pregame… not interrupt the World Series” and another wrote “This is the World Series not the All Star game” in the comments on the MLB YouTube video featuring their performance.

Trending Stories

Over on Instagram, their appearance was also taken to task. “Horrible idea to have a half time show AFTER a moment of silence for those impacted by cancer, in the middle of the WORLD SERIES. So bad,” wrote one person, while another called it the “worst part of the whole broadcast.” Another was more diplomatic, writing, “They might be good performers, but please never do this in the middle of a game again. Do it to start the game. This just changes the entire atmosphere.”

Joe Jonas appeared to take it all in stride, humorously posting, “Why these guys ?” on MLB’s Instagram post. And despite the backlash from some, thousands of others “liked” Jonas’ response and hundreds of others commented in support of him and the band. Besides, there was at least one pretty evident reason why they were there with the sign he held up at the beginning of their performance, given their dad, Kevin Jonas Sr., is a cancer survivor. Perhaps a better battle to pick is a unified one against cancer rather than over a band’s surprise set.

A$AP Relli Scores Legal Victory As Judge Denies A$AP Rocky’s Attorney Joe Tacopina’s Motion To Dismiss $500K Defamation Lawsuit

A$AP Relli just scored a significant victory in his ongoing legal fight against A$AP Rocky’s attorney, Joe Tacopina.

On Thursday, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge denied Tacopina’s motion to dismiss Relli’s defamation lawsuit, allowing the case to move forward.

Judge Randolph Hammock ruled that Tacopina’s media comments calling Relli a “liar” and “gold digger” were not protected by litigation privilege but were instead “spin” meant to harm Relli’s reputation.

Tacopina previously told Rolling Stone that Relli’s shooting allegations were “an extortion attempt by a former associate,” adding, “He’s a failed associate–ex–associate of Rocky’s and he’s jealous.”

Relli claims the remarks led to online dath thrats and severe emotional distress. He has spent over $500,000 in legal fees pursuing the defamation and civil a$$ault cases against A$AP Rocky. A jury trial is expected to begin in early 2026.

What are your thoughts on this ongoing battle?

Joe Westerlund: Curiosities From the Shift Album Review

Joe Westerlund: Curiosities From the Shift Album Review

by jummy84 October 25, 2025
written by jummy84

After recording alone at Sylvan Esso’s studio, Westerlund had friends like Califone’s Tim Rutili, saxophonist Sam Gendel, and violinist Libby Rodenbough make their marks, drawing out the songfulness of his pitched percussion and electronic washes—his kaleidoscopic mills of hand drums, shakers, metallophones, thumb pianos, flutes, field recordings, and so on. To call it a percussion album probably gives the wrong idea of austerity and intensity, when the music is really driven by its transparent density and uncanny efflorescence of textures and colors. It’s vivid and exciting in the manner of techno, though dancing to it would be a path to insanity, and it’s beautiful and subtle in the manner of concert music without taking itself quite so seriously.

For all of his evident technical ability, Westerlund’s music seems most concerned with vibe and feel, and each track on Curiosities gives us a different way to perceive meaning in motion. “Nu Male Uno” is moist-eyed like Animal Collective, draping a swaying theme over a sashaying ant-line of little pulses. “Peebles ’n’ Stones” is an array of seemingly disparate parts—unwinding clockwork, essayistic constructions of mixed percussion, glassily shattering piano phrases—inextricably linked like falling dominos. “Can Tangle” distills a knack for coating sweet, tiny songs in glittering scales of rhythmic and timbral elaboration.

There are still many surprises to come—the dubby noir of “Persurverance,” the computerized scramble and galumph of “Furahai,” the perfumed Italo splashes of “Midpoint,” and the mighty churn of “Elegy (for OLAibi),” which begins in sinuous reverie and ends in rapture. Throughout his work, Westerlund makes beats feel less like unilateral lines and more like vast webs vibrating with sympathetic reactions—percussion as ecosystem, not the bulldozer plowing through it. This approach, rigorous yet flexible and fluid, has a natural synergy with the clave on Curiosities From the Shift. Though clearly born out of strenuous study and effort, it’s an easy and captivating listen, which is the essence of his generous, endlessly generative approach to music.

Billy Magnussen, Lulu Wilson Join Joe Lynch’s ‘Buzzkill’

by jummy84 October 23, 2025
written by jummy84

EXCLUSIVE: Billy Magnussen and Lulu Wilson have signed to co-star in Joe Lynch’s horror comedy Buzzkill ahead of an early 2026 shoot in Texas, as Anonymous Content and The Veterans join forces to launch sales on the film at the AFM.

Billed as a blend of A Quiet Place and Another Round, the movie is set in a small Texas town terrorized by a creature that can only be seen by people who are drunk.

Magnussen stars as recently widowed and recovering alcoholic Sheriff Red, who launches an investigation as locals begin turning up murdered and dismembered one by one, discovering that the monster feeds on the blood alcohol content of its victims.

With the annual brewery festival fast approaching, the whole town is about to get wasted. Red must face his demons and pick up the bottle one last time to take down the monster and save his town for good. Wilson co-stars as Lydia, Red’s vengeful little sister.

Lynch – whose previous credits include action-thriller Everly and action-horror Mayhem as well as Netflix’s Point Blank, Shudder’s original fantastic horror anthology Creepshow (2021), and the pilot episode of Tales from the Void (2024) – will direct from a screenplay written by Colin McLaughlin.

Brothers Dane and Cole Eckerle are producing through their company Bad Grey, the credits of which include titles like Last Straw and Mother, May I?.

Individually, Dane produced I Love My Dad which won the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize at SXSW in 2022 and then sold to Magnolia. He also served as an EP on Greedy People with Joseph Gordon Levitt, Lily James, Himesh Patel, Simon Rex and Jim Gaffigan, which was released by Lionsgate last year.

“Colin has crafted a story that’s equal parts hilarious, scary and action-packed — an entertaining romp from start to finish,” said Dane Eckerle.

“Joe Lynch’s track record and ability to create high-octane genre chaos makes him the perfect filmmaker for the job. Add our stars, Billy and Lulu, plus our partners at Anonymous Content and The Veterans — and we couldn’t think of a better team to be brewing this movie alongside.”

Jonathan Schwartz and Nick Shumaker will produce on behalf of Anonymous Content with David Levine executive producing. Magnussen will also produce under his company HappyBad Bungalow, alongside partners Anne Hollister and Shane Andries who serve as co-executive producers.

AC Studios division AC Independent and The Veterans will have a sizzle reel and script available for buyers at the AFM. The Veterans will handle international territories and AC Independent will sell U.S. rights with UTA Independent Film Group.

Magnussen broke through with Rob Marshall’s Into the Woods with other credits including Guy Richie’s Aladdin, the Black Mirror TV Series, and No Time to Die.

He also starred as Pleakley in Disney’s live-action hit Lilo & Stitch and Road House alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor for his role in the play, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. He will next star as the lead in AMC’s upcoming 2026 series The Audacity from creator Jonathan Glatzer.

Wilson will be seen next in an upcoming Hulu feature alongside Gaten Matarazzo and Sean Giambrone, directed by comedy duo BriTANicK, while she is best known for her horror roles in Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) and Annabelle: Creation (2017), as well as Mike Flanagan Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House (2018), and The Fall of the House of Usher (2023) and the soon-to-be triptych Becky (2020), The Wrath of Becky (2023) and the upcoming third instalment.

Magnussen is repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern. Wilson is repped by UTA, Authentic Talent & Literary Management, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trattner Auerbach Hynick Jaime LeVine Sample & Klein. Lynch is repped by Anonymous Content and Eclipse Law.

Joe Jonas Denies Using Cocaine Onstage

by jummy84 October 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Joe Jonas is sticking with cake by the ocean.

After a TikTok video featuring the “Work It Out” singer appearing to fidget with his nose during a recent Jonas Brothers concert went viral, fans began to speculate that he may have been using cocaine on the side of the stage.

However, Joe, 36, firmly put a stop to the rumors with an unflinching declaration about his drug use—or lack thereof—telling Esquire in an interview published Oct. 21, “I’ve never touched cocaine in my life.”

In addition to the firm denial, Joe noted that taking the stimulant in front of thousands of fans during the Greetings From Your Hometown Tour wouldn’t exactly be subtle.

“If I did,” he continued, “I think I’d be a little slicker about it than doing it onstage.”

Shortly after the video in question began circulating online in September, Joe—who shares kids Willa, 4, and Delphine, 2, with ex-wife Sophie Turner—offered a more playful take on the situation, commenting on the post, “lol you never had a booger?”

Joe Absolom reveals Emmerdale villain Ray's truth behind Laurel connection amid "subservient" dynamic with mum Celia

Joe Absolom reveals Emmerdale villain Ray’s truth behind Laurel connection amid “subservient” dynamic with mum Celia

by jummy84 October 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Joe Absolom has revealed the truth behind Emmerdale villain Ray Walters’s romantic attachment to Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy), and shared some insight into his relationship with adoptive mum Celia Daniels (Jaye Griffiths).

Ray has been manipulating April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) and her boyfriend Dylan Penders (Fred Kettle) into delivering and selling drugs for him.

Things took an even darker turn when Ray led April into sexual slavery.

But when we learned that Celia has been pulling the strings all along, it became clear that Ray, while ruthless, isn’t half as dangerous as her!

Chatting to RadioTimes.com and other media, Absolom explained: “To April and Dylan, he’s at the top. But to actually most people watching him, people realize he’s one of the many, one of the cogs.

“And you see above him is [Celia], who he’s terrified of and attached to in a sort of maternal sense. He’s very much the child and the subservient one,” he added.

“Whereas with Dylan and April, he’s kind of the dominator, if you like, or the driving force of most of those things. Most of my scenes are different with those two guys to what you see with [Celia], who’s this very formidable, strident character.”

Celia (Jaye Griffiths) with an unsuspecting Moira (Natalie J Robb) ITV

Describing a moment on set where a co-star had yet to find out the nature of Ray and Celia’s relationship, the actor revealed: “We did a scene the other day and Jaye touched my cheek, and one of the other actors went, ‘wait, are you two dating?'”

While Celia’s more tactile moments seem to be used to keep Ray in line, there’s another, warmer opportunity to see Ray’s softer side when he takes a genuine shine to Laurel!

“I think when he meets Laurel, there’s something that brings a side out to him that he didn’t know he was going to have, but the writers did. I like it because it has a different side of it. It’s more human.

“I think he sees a family,” Absolom added. “Sees her with her kids and sees a family life that he never had because he was adopted very early on by Celia when he was eight.

“So we see in episodes later, not flashbacks, but little hints of what his life has been like. So I think to me, Laurel is this kind of woman who has a business and a family and children are kind of, you know, interesting. She lives in a nice house.

“Yeah, I think it’s attractive to Ray in lots of different ways.”

But despite the possibility of love on the horizon, Ray will turn his attention back to crime, discovering that Dylan has gone behind his back and stolen some money after a job.

Ray with DS Carter in Emmerdale. ITV

“He’s got the backpack and he’s been double crossed, I guess,” muses the star.

“So it’s a real moment where he realises he may be losing a grip on these two people and that he has to now take it to a different level and try and get them back and get the money back and get them back onside. So it’s a risk of losing everything, really.”

As Dylan and April make a desperate bid to escape, we’ll have to wait and see if Ray will catch up with them.

But Absolom is enjoying his time on Emmerdale, summing up what he’s been up to since stepping into the role of Ray.

“Since I’ve arrived, I’ve been paying kids to deliver drugs, I’ve been delivering drugs myself, I’ve been pimping out other characters. And I’ve taught Dylan how to drive. There’s a real gamut of opportunity for the Dales!”

First Trailer for Joe Carnahan’s ‘Not Without Hope’ Boat Rescue Movie

by Alex Billington

“Hope is the strongest thing we have.” VVS Films has revealed the first official trailer for a survival movie called Not Without Hope, adapted from the book of the same name. This is set for release in theaters this December. Directed by Joe Carnahan, it’s one of two upcoming movies he has coming out back-to-back – he also has The RIP scheduled for January. Not Without Hope tells the true story of four friends stuck in the Gulf of Mexico when their fishing boat capsizes during a storm. The book description sums it up nicely: “an inspiring and unforgettable story of courage and strength, friendship and loss, and, most importantly, hope, in the vein of Touching the Void, Into Thin Air, Between a Rock and a Hard Place, and Piers Paul Read’s classic survival tale, Alive.” This intense open water survival thriller stars Zachary Levi as Nick Schuyler, Quentin Plair as Marquis Cooper, Terrence Terrell as Corey Smith, Marshall Cook as Will Bleakley, with Josh Duhamel as the Coast Guard Captain and JoBeth Williams as Marcia. Of course this reminds me of The Perfect Storm, but it looks nowhere near as good as that movie. This doesn’t look that great at all.

Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Joe Carnahan’s film Not Without Hope, from YouTube:

Not Without Hope Poster

An extraordinary true story. Best friends Nick Schuyler (Zachary Levi) and Will Bleakley (Marshall Cook), and NFL players Marquis Cooper (Quentin Plair) and Corey Smith (Terrence Terrell), depart Clearwater, FL for a fishing trip 70 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico. While attempting to free a trapped anchor before a storm hits, their boat capsizes, throwing the friends violently into the freezing water. US Coast Guard Cpt. Timothy Close (Josh Duhamel) and his crew, beaten back in their air rescue efforts, summon their largest ship to cut through the raging ocean as the group battles massive waves, dehydration, hypothermia, and even sharks, in their epic struggle to survive & return to their loved ones. Not Without Hope is directed by American action producer / filmmaker Joe Carnahan, director of the movies Blood Guts Bullets & Octane, Narc, Smokin’ Aces, The A-Team, The Grey, Stretch, Boss Level, Copshop, and Shadow Force previously. The screenplay is by E. Nicholas Mariani and Joe Carnahan. Based on the book of the same name by Nick Schuyler and Jere Longman. VVS Films will debut Joe Carnahan’s Not Without Hope in Canadian theaters starting December 5th, 2025; it also opens in the US on December 12th later this year. Look any good?
