James Cameron Says Merger Can’t Shut Down Theatrical

by jummy84 December 12, 2025
written by jummy84

EXCLUSIVE: Three-time Oscar winner James Cameron remains eerie on a Netflix-Warner Bros marriage, particularly in its impact on the theatrical business and the window. However, Cameron plans to stand in the way of any steamroller making a path toward the big screen.

Deadline Awards Editor Antonia Blyth caught up with the Avatar: Fire and Wash filmmaker, who shared his feelings on the pending merger, now that Warners has accepted Netflix’s bid (yes, nothing is done yet, as Paramount has launched a hostile takeover over the 102-year-old studio).

“Look, it’s no secret that Netflix, they’ve kind of, in a funny way, they’ve had to make an accommodation with a few filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro and so on to keep a foot in theatrical, but I think it’s no secret that they want to replace theatrical,” Cameron told Deadline today.

20th Century Studios

“OK, I mean, maybe that happens, I don’t know, maybe I’m a dinosaur,” he continued, “I happen to think that there’s something sacred about the movie going experience and just the ease and broad access of streaming is not the complete answer. Maybe the universe adjusts around those two principles, but you can’t just steamroll theatrical out of existence and I’m going to stay opposed to that.”

On Monday, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos walked back his comments of recent months, and exclaimed that he’s pro-theatrical, particularly for those greenlit Warner Bros titles that are being developed and made for multiplexes. He’ll even honor the downstream window. However, sources says that Sarandos is a champion of a 17-day exclusive theatrical window, which is far apart from the 45-day window which exhibition craves. For many, 17-days theatrical to Netflix is a shotgun to the moviegoing business.

Cameron said, “Now, maybe Netflix modifies its game once it has the responsibility for the survival of theatrical as well. If they prevail in this, they’ll become a major and we’re down to half the number of majors that existed when I came into the business. This is going to sort itself out, but I’m pretty four-square on the side of let’s keep that theatrical experience alive. Clearly, I make movies for that, primarily.”

“They play well through the waterfall because a good story is a good story. You put it on the smallest screen you want, it’s still a good story. You look at it through a fricking pinhole, it’s still a good story, right?” said the director whose last movie, 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water became the third highest grossing movie worldwide at $2.3 billion and cleared $531M in profit after all ancillaries. Again, you don’t get to those numbers, Netflix, on a 17-day theatrical window. Duh.

Then bringing back to home, meaning Avatar: Fire and Ash, which runs 3 hours and 15 minutes long, the longest of any Avatar movie, Cameron added, “But the way it’s meant to be enjoyed is in a theater in 3D, in an unbroken stream of consciousness, three hours long, because that’s when the emotion will wash over you and through you in a way that it never will on a smaller screen in an interrupted flow.”

“The second you’ve got a remote and you composite, you just lost half of the impact,” Cameron continued, “Boom! Mic drop. I’ve never said it that concisely.”

Avatar: Fire And Ash opens next Friday and is expected to clear $100M+ at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.

Former EastEnders star James Bye lands major new role

by jummy84 November 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Nine months after his character Martin Fowler was killed off in the 40th anniversary live episode of EastEnders, James Bye has officially landed a major new role, joining the cast of hit stage show 2:22 A Ghost Story.

Bye will be playing Sam in the show’s new UK tour in 2026, alongside Hollyoaks, The Bill and Footballers’ Wives star Gary Lucy, who has been cast as Ben. Lucy also had a role in EastEnders, playing Danny Pennant between 2012 and 2014.

The news of Bye and Lucy’s casting was announced on 2:22 A Ghost Story’s Instagram account, alongside the news that Shvorne Marks will be reprising her role as Jenny, having played the character opposite Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton, while Natalie Casey will be playing Lauren.

The play, written by Uncanny’s Danny Robins, has been running since 2021, with other stars who have featured across various productions including Lily Allen, Stephanie Beatriz, Mandip Gill, Cheryl, Louisa Lytton, Jake Wood, James Buckley and Tom Felton.

The synopsis for the play reads as follows: “Jenny believes her new home is haunted, but her husband Sam isn’t having any of it. They argue with their first dinner guests, old friend Lauren and new partner Ben.

“Can the dead really walk again? Belief and scepticism clash, but something feels strange and frightening, and that something is getting closer, so they’re going to stay up… until 2:22… and then they’ll know.”

This is the second stage show that Bye will have starred in since finishing his time on EastEnders. This year, he has also been starring in a new production of Death Comes to Pemberley.

When his role in that show was announced, Bye said of playing Mr Darcy: “I am leaving EastEnders on an absolute high after the explosive live 40th anniversary episode.

“After a decade of gritty storylines, it’s going to be quite a switch to put on period clothes as one of literature’s romantic leading men, but I can’t wait for this new chapter to begin.”

'Nuremberg' Star Rami Malek, Director James Vanderbilt Interview On Post-WWII Pic

‘Nuremberg’ Star Rami Malek, Director James Vanderbilt Interview On Post-WWII Pic

by jummy84 November 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Rami Malek admits that while the subject matter of his latest film Nuremberg is sobering and grim, the story and characters were so compelling that he and his castmates couldn’t help but feel giddy when diving into the work.

“What’s odd is the juxtaposition of the word ‘fun’ in Nuremberg,” Malek mused during Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles panel Saturday alongside writer-director James Vanderbilt. The Bohemian Rhapsody Oscar winner described the whipsaw between the tension being generated on set and the actors’ joy of creating indelible characters and soaking in the lighter moments that added humanity to the story of prosecuting top Nazi officer Hermann Göring, played by Russell Crowe.

“There are moments where you’re laughing, and that’s what James has done so brilliantly in the script, that’s what drew me to it,” he said. “I love stories that take us back into history and allow us to retell the story that we think we know – and I promise you when you see this, if you haven’t, there’s so many surprises and twists and just a part of history that really will shock you.”

Malek said he and his fellow actors “were salivating as we were watching or taking part in it. And I know Michael [Shannon] and Russell just enjoyed every second of that to be able to go through these takes.”

The sense of place added to the gravitas of the story, Malek added. “We were shooting in Hungary, and at the end of each take there was a standing ovation,” he explained, noting that the locals “kept applauding because there’s so many links in that part of the world to what happened – very, very closely. And so you could feel that. You could feel the tension in that courtroom scene. It was palpable every day. You hold that with you and yeah, there’s something uniquely special about that.

“I just threw myself into the nature of what this guy was going through,” he added about his role as an Army psychiatrist tasked with evaluating Göring at a critical turning point in post-war world, matching wits with Nazis who had committed or ordered some of the most heinous atrocities in history.

RELATED: ‘Nuremberg’ Wows TIFF: Why It Took 13 Years To Stage The Post-WWII Trial And Tribulations Of Hitler Henchman Hermann Göring

“You have to come in there with a sense of charm and a sense of being as engaging and smart,” he said. “And I think being able to play that psychological chess match well enough to be in the room, pulling that off with all, not just [Göring], but 21 other Nazis as well. So there was a sense that I had to bring every level of humanity into that room — whether it was wit, charm, being able to be disarming, being able to be incredibly intelligent and being as powerful and having as much steeliness as I could at moments going toe-to-toe in that room.”

As he continues to add to his acting résumé, Malek also made it clear he wouldn’t be going backward in any sort of Mr. Robot reboot or spinoff with that 2015-19 series’ creator Sam Esmail. “No,” he affirmed definitively, though he said a collaboration on an unrelated project might arise. “Sam and I just talked about working together again, but that’s it.”

Is James Pickens Jr. Leaving ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Amid Cancer Battle? – Hollywood Life

James Pickens Jr., who’s best known for playing Dr. Richard Webber in Grey’s Anatomy, shocked fans upon revealing his cancer diagnosis. What made the news even more unsettling was that his on-screen character’s cancer battle was revealed in the season 22 midseason finale. As fans grapple with the revelation, many are wondering whether or not James is leaving the show.

The actor spoke with BlackHealthMatters.com in November 2025 to discuss his illness.

“It’s not the kind of news anyone wants to hear, but to be honest, prostate cancer has run through my family,” James pointed out. “My father had it. He had a lot of brothers; several of them had it. I would have been surprised if I hadn’t gotten it. I’ve got a 90-year-old first cousin, who’s still alive, actually; he had it. His son has it. A couple of his brothers had it. No one, as far as I know, has succumbed to it.”

Below, Hollywood Life has the latest updates about James’ presence on Grey’s Anatomy.

Does James Pickens Jr. Actually Have Cancer? What Type He Has

Yes, as previously noted, James was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2024.

“We caught it really early, and so they thought that would be the best route to take,” the Ohio native told BlackHealthMatters.com. “I do have a rare variant that you don’t see very often. They wanted to err on the side of caution and keep an eye on it. It was rare enough that they wanted to make sure that they were crossing all the T’s and dotting all their I’s. But they hadn’t seen one that was detected as early as mine.”

During the interview, James recalled going back to the doctor and, “when my PSA numbers came back, my primary said, ‘Yeah, you know what? It’s ticked up some more. I want to send you back to the urologist.”

“The urologist looked at him and said,” Yeah, there’s something here. Let’s do an MRI,’ which we did, and it revealed, as he called it, something suspicious,” James elaborated. “They scheduled a biopsy, which revealed a tumor.”

Is James Pickens Jr. Leaving Grey’s Anatomy?

At the time of publication, James has not announced his departure from Grey’s Anatomy.

How Is James Pickens Jr. Doing With His Cancer Battle?

James appears to be managing his prostate cancer well. According to BlackHealthMatters, he underwent a prostatectomy to fight the disease, and he was hospitalized for about a day.

James Van Der Beek to sell ‘Dawson’s Creek’ memorabilia amid cancer battle – National

James Van Der Beek is parting ways with some of his Dawson’s Creek memorabilia amid his cancer battle.

The 48-year-old actor, who has been battling Stage 3 colorectal cancer, is selling several items from TV teen drama Dawson’s Creek and movie Varsity Blues in a partnership with auction website Propstore, where interested buyers can place their bids.

“I’ve been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and with all of the recent unexpected twists and turns life has presented recently, it’s clear that the time is now,” Van Der Beek told Propstore in a statement.

“And while I have some nostalgia tugging at me as I part with these items, it feels good to be able to offer them through Propstore’s auction to share with those who have supported my work over the years.”

Van Der Beek, who starred as Dawson Leery in the hit show, is auctioning off items including wardrobe, props and set pieces, like Dawson Leery’s flannel, the necklace he wore in the series before he gifted it to Joey Potter (Katie Holmes) and Van Der Beek’s chair back from the set of the series.

All of the proceeds from the items sold will go to Van Der Beek to help “with the financial cost of fighting cancer,” People reports.

Van Der Beek first revealed that he had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer last November in an interview with People.

“I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,” the star told the publication. “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”

The actor did not give further details on his diagnosis, but shared in an Instagram post: “I’m in a good place and feeling strong.”

“I’ve been dealing with this privately until now, getting treatment and dialing in my overall health with greater focus than ever before,” he continued on Instagram. “It’s been quite the initiation, and I’ll tell you more when I’m ready.”

In the post, he said he decided to make the announcement before he’d planned, explaining that while he wanted to talk about it “at length” with People, another publication was getting set to run the story.

“That plan had to be altered early this morning when I was informed that a tabloid was going to run with the news,” Van Der Beek wrote.

An increasing number of younger people are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer in Canada and the United States — even though overall cases and deaths have fallen in recent years.

According to a 2023 study from the American Cancer Society, one in five cases diagnosed in 2019 were in people under 55, almost double the rate of 11 per cent in 1995.

It’s a similar situation in Canada, where colorectal cancer is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer, according to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Colorectal cancer starts in the colon or rectum, which are part of the large intestine, and can also spread to other parts of the body.

Unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking and alcohol consumption increase the risks for this type of cancer, but family history is also a contributing factor.

James Van Der Beek is auctioning off Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues props to help with the financial burden of his cancer battle.

James Van Der Beek is selling film and TV props amid cancer battle

The 48-year-old actor – who was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer last year – is giving film and TV fans a chance to own memorabilia from his career with 100 percent of the proceeds from the items helping alleviate the cost of his health struggles.

He told PEOPLE magazine: “I’ve been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and with all of the recent unexpected twists and turns life has presented recently, it’s clear that the time is now.

“While I have some nostalgia tugging at me as I part with these items, it feels good to be able to offer them through Propstore’s auction to share with those who have supported my work over the years.”

The items from James’ personal collection will be available next month in Propstore’s Winter Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction from December 5 to 7.

Many of the items are being made public for the first time, with wardrobe, props and set pieces from the actor’s career.

One major piece of TV history being offered is the necklace Dawson gave Joey for prom in Dawson’s Creek, which is estimated to detch between $26,400 and $52,800.

The collection includes items from throughout the series – which ran from 1998 to 2003 – including James’ pilot episode costume, which could bring in almost $4,000.

There are also items from 1999 movie Varsity Blues, including his film-worn West Caana Coyotes Hat, and cleats.

Anyone interested in bidding for pieces of the collection can register now ahead of live in-room bidding in London on December 6, while global bidding will be available until the end of play on December 7.

In September, James made a surprise appearance during a Dawson’s Creek reunion, having had to drop out due to suffering from “two stomach viruses”.

However, he shocked fans on the night at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City on Monday (22.09.25) when he made a virtual appearance at the event in support of the F Cancer charity.

In a pre-recorded video, which was projected onto the stage, he said: “I have been looking forward to this night for months and months ever since my angel Michelle Williams said she was putting it together.

“I can’t believe I’m not there. I can’t believe I don’t get to see my cast mates, my beautiful cast in person.

“And just I want to stand on that stage and thank every single person in the theatre for being here tonight. From the cast to the crew to everybody who’s doing anything and has been so generous, and especially every single last one of you – you are the best fans in the world.

“Thank you for coming. It’s just absolutely humbling just how much you did for this night, and I just want to say thank you. Thank you to every single person here.”

5 Albums I Can’t Live Without: James Atkin of EMF

by jummy84 November 2, 2025
written by jummy84

Name  James Atkin

Best known for  Singer for the band EMF.

Current city  Yorkshire Dales, U.K.

Really want to be in  Back in the tour van visiting a new town or city every day.

Excited about  The new EMF releases and heading back to the U.S. for Spring tours.

My current music collection has a lot of  The wife jokes that I struggle to discover new music, often waiting for her or someone in our family to champion a new band, then I jump on the bandwagon. Recently, I’ve enjoyed new music by Geese, Rio Kosta, and Chalk, and like Syd Minsky from Working Men’s Club’s solo stuff.

And a little bit of  Very broad, from guitars to acid house.

Preferred format  We’ve recently moved the turntable out of the studio and set it up in the living room. Each family member has a crate of vinyl. There are often arguments on who gets to choose the day’s music. I love the convenience of streaming, but vinyl all the way.

5 Albums I Can’t Live Without:

1

Technique, New Order

My first real experience of music that used both electronics and guitars whilst capturing perfectly formed pop songs. The emotion from Bernard Sumner’s voice on this album connected with me instantly.

They recorded it in Ibiza in 1989, obviously influenced by their surroundings and the hedonistic club lifestyle of the island. You can almost feel sunshine when you listen to it. There are songs of romance, partying a little too hard, regret, honesty, and self-doubt. A definite blueprint for our own EMF journey.

2

The Queen is Dead, The Smiths

Before discovering acid house music, it was all about the guitars. Johnny Marr’s musical melodies just blew our young minds. 1986 was probably the most important year for me personally getting influenced by music, discovering the Smiths changed everything. I can most definitely recite more Smiths lyrics off the top of my head than any other band. I remember when I was a kid people would say, ‘Why do you listen to that miserable music?’ I’d point them in the direction of this album as it’s full of irony, humor, and lyrical joy.

3

Blue Lines, Massive Attack

One of those albums that still gets played in our house relentlessly. So much depth that you never tire of.  Born out of the mild-mild west of Bristol, incorporating reggae sound system culture, the U.K.’s take on slowed down hip-hop and samples from scratchy old ’60s records. It’s totally infectious and the perfect choice on the decks for those morning comedowns. I can’t imagine a life without this record, it’s definitely stood the tests of time.

4

Blue, Joni Mitchell

It’s good to have different albums for different moods or states of mind. If calmness is needed, this is my go-to album. I think perhaps it’s the nostalgia or the place it transports me back to. I first heard it drifting up the stairs when I was a small child when my parents used to play it. Her angelic voice can lift your spirits and purify your soul. I could happily listen to this record repeatedly. In fact, I think I’m on my third copy as I’ve worn it out so much over the years.

5

Homework, Daft Punk

I adore electronic dance music. This album is so raw and is pretty punk rock. From start to finish, it’s full of repetitive grooves and hypnotic vocals that take you on a journey. I remember this album sounding so fresh and exciting when it came out. Daft Punk had a very unique French disco/acid-funk sound. Since arriving in 1997, their influence can be heard in other bands I love, like Justice, but for me, Daft Punk are the original purveyors of this style of music.

Toronto Indie Coming-of-Age ‘Boxcutter’ Trailer Starring Ashton James

“Even if it doesn’t work out, at least I tried…” Film Movement has debuted the trailer for a Canadian indie film titled Boxcutter, about an aspiring rapper goes on a quest across the gentrifying streets of Toronto to find his music in time for the event that could change his life. It premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year and drops in limited theaters starting today (on October 24th) heading to VOD next month. After aspiring rapper Rome’s apartment is burgled, and his only copy of his music stolen on his laptop, he devises a plan with the help of his friend Jenaya to track down his four producers & reassemble his album in time for an event with megastar music producer Richie Hill. Starring Ashton James as Rome, with Zoe Lewis, Viphusan Vani, Clairmont The Second, Matthew Worku, & Rich Kidd. Per the description, the film offers a gritty, heartfelt coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of Toronto’s vibrant music and art scene. Boxcutter dives into the hustle & grind of independent artistry, exploring the lengths one will go to to protect their passion and dreams. Looks like another great indie discovery this year – worth a watch.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Reza Dahya’s film Boxcutter, direct from YouTube:

Aspiring rapper Rome (Ashton James) has the talent and vision to break out in Toronto’s hip-hop scene, but his crippling insecurity is holding him back. When he learns that megastar producer Richie Hill will be making an appearance at a local club, Rome seizes the chance to meet him and get his album into Richie’s hands. However, disaster strikes when Rome’s apartment is burglarized and the only copy of his album is stolen. Racing across the city with his friend Jenaya, Rome scrambles to track down his collaborators and his records before the show begins and he misses his one shot. Boxcutter is directed by the Canadian indie filmmaker Reza Dahya, his second feature after making Samanthology previously, plus many other short films. The screenplay is written by Chris Cromie. It’s produced by Soko Negash, Reza Dahya. This initially premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. Film Movement will debut Dahya’s Boxcutter film in select US theaters starting October 24th, 2025 – playing now. For more info, visit their official site.
