Natural Information Society: Perseverance Flow Album Review

In the same way that a diamond’s symmetrical shine is both easy to admire and requires an eyepiece to appreciate in full, Perseverance Flow’s charm is shaped by the tiny variations built into the score. Once the theme is established and allowed to settle, harmonium player Lisa Alvarado flips her pattern, playing a palindrome of the simple rise-and-fall melody. The shift is so smooth it can take a moment to notice it’s happened, and even then you might second-guess the extent of the change. Drummer Mikel Patrick Avery loosens his percussion a few minutes later, playing something that sounds like pebbles sloshing in a plastic bucket. The soft shuffle is soon absorbed—whether actually or just by a kind of aural illusion—into the original pattern. Abrams anchors the sound with his Moroccan guembri, occasionally halting the steady limp of the primary line to tie a fluid knot without losing a step.

While it’s not unusual for repetition to turn a musical phrase inside out, similar to the way a word loses its meaning once you’ve said it a few times, Perseverance Flow’s emotional register stays constant. The phrases gradually begin to lengthen—at one point, Alvarado’s harmonium sounds more like an accordion playing a Cajun song in slow-mo—which gives the piece enough momentum to stay grounded. At no point does it even glance in the direction of chaos; you could probably thread a needle with the sound wave. Around the 19-minute mark, the entire ensemble pulls up together in a way that suggests a vamp, then immediately falls back into the pattern without anyone losing their place. It’s such a weird little thrill that, if you’re properly locked in, it feels like peaking in sync with a 2 a.m. bass drop.

While the instrumentation wouldn’t be out of place at your local roots festival, the dance music influence on Perseverance Flow is undeniable. Abrams’ frequent switches and intertwined notes mimic the braided bass hits and glitchy rhythms of footwork without ever leaving the aesthetic context of gnawa. Little clap-back rhythms pop up occasionally. At one point, something that sounds like a bag of shells being dropped on a snare drum introduces a new back-and-forth to the theme that matches the harmonium and brings the piece’s shuffle closer to something like hip-hop. It’s a canny way of making sure the listener’s body stays tuned in to what could easily become cerebral; you will not nod your head more insistently to a piece of experimental music this year.

bitchy | Will the British police actually investigate Prince Andrew with this new information?

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

There’s going to be a wall-to-wall royal catastrophe this week as the fallout from Prince Andrew’s degeneracy continues. On Friday, Andrew was allowed to “give up” his ducal title and his royal honors, all part of a private deal he worked out with King Charles. Then over the weekend, the Mail published never-before-seen emails and documents from the Epstein files. Additionally, excerpts from Virginia Giuffre’s book, Nobody’s Girl, continue to come out. Now we know that Andrew got a hold of Virginia’s Social Security number and information, and he gave that information to his police contacts because he wanted to harm and smear Virginia. Now it’s possible that Andrew could face an actual police investigation in the UK?

Prince Andrew faces becoming the first member of the Royal family to be investigated by police for more than 20 years after he was accused of trying to use his protection officer to smear his teenage sex abuse accuser. The Metropolitan Police is “actively looking into” allegations that he asked his taxpayer-funded bodyguard to investigate Virginia Giuffre after obtaining both her date of birth and social security number.

He then told Ed Perkins, Elizabeth II’s then deputy press secretary, that he had asked one of his officers to dig up information about Giuffre, according to a leaked email. A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “We are aware of media reporting and are actively looking into the claims made.”

The Prince could potentially face a criminal investigation in the US for sharing Giuffre’s nine-digit social security number without her consent. Spencer Kuvin, the lawyer who represented nine victims of Jeffrey Epstein – the late paedophile who abused Giuffre – suggested that the Prince could face a hefty jail sentence, noting that it was a crime to knowingly transfer, possess or use, without consent, another person’s social security number.

“Penalties for this crime are very severe and can be up to 15 years in prison,” he said. The US Social Security Act also protects this information. “Given the information disclosed so far it appears that Andrew may have violated both of these acts. The FBI should immediately open an investigation into his actions and request that Andrew subject himself to an interview. Both the US and British authorities should not protect this awful individual. The world should hold Andrew accountable and show everyone that justice matters.”

The Met has looked into allegations relating to the Prince and Epstein’s activities in London three times and opted not to investigate. In October 2021, Scotland Yard announced that it would take “no further action” against Prince Andrew after reviewing legal documents from the civil case brought by Giuffre. But Sigrid McCawley, Giuffre’s former lawyer, said on Sunday that the newly unearthed emails warranted a “thorough investigation” into the force’s actions.

She told The Telegraph: “For too long the Metropolitan Police has been a pawn for the powerful and privileged. Weaponising the criminal justice system to discredit and debase survivors is wrong and cannot be tolerated. These new revelations warrant a thorough investigation and a new examination of actions taken by Prince Andrew and the Metropolitan Police to silence the bravery of Virginia Giuffre.”

Buckingham Palace staff could also face questions over what they knew and what they knew about the sharing of Giuffre’s private information.

[From The Telegraph]

I absolutely hope that the Met Police investigate Andrew thoroughly, but I doubt it will happen. Or rather, they’ll announce a splashy investigation, then they’ll slow-walk it and eventually do nothing about him. Meanwhile, various MPs are now calling on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to change the law so that Andrew can be formally stripped of all or some of his titles. Right now, Andrew’s York ducal title is only “in abeyance,” meaning not used, or the title has been suspended. Andrew Lownie (a royal biographer) pointed out that Starmer would only have to tweak the Peerage Act of 1963 to really strip Andrew of his York title. But Andrew would still be a prince.

I also wanted to show this clip of Emily Maitlis speaking over the weekend. Maitlis interviewed Andrew in 2019, in what was the “beginning of the end” for Andrew, and part of this now six-year cover-up.

Very powerful interview from @maitlis on the removal of Prince Andrew’s titles. From her original work on Newsnight & still now she demonstrates that her work is for the targets & survivors of Epstein (& their families) – vitally prioritising truth in an age of convenient lies. pic.twitter.com/OdtZKT5gef

Bruce Springsteen film ‘Deliver Me From Nowhere’ promises “new information to even his most ardent fans”

The forthcoming Bruce Springsteen film Deliver Me From Nowhere will contain “new information to even his most ardent fans”.

The movie charts the period in The Boss’s life when he recorded his sixth album ‘Nebraska’ (1982), with The Bear star Jeremy Allen White portraying the legendary artist. It is set to arrive in cinemas on October 23.

During a new interview with Empire, writer and director Scott Cooper opened up about how he approached making Deliver Me From Nowhere – which Springsteen has described as “an anti-biopic”.

“[Springsteen] said to me, ‘Scott, the truth about yourself isn’t always pretty’,” Cooper told the publication.

“We discussed that this was going to be a film so far removed from the mythology of the rock star. The thing that was most important to him was that this would be no hagiography.”

He continued, teasing that even Springsteen diehards would learn something new: “There’ll be things in this film that will be new information to even Bruce’s most ardent fans – not covered in his Broadway show, or in documentaries, or in his memoir.”

Cooper added: “And he never once asked me to sand off the rough edges. But would you expect anything else from Bruce Springsteen? This man who’s the reluctant moral conscience of America?”

Springsteen recently revealed why he gave Deliver Me From Nowhere the go-ahead, despite it charting a “difficult” time in his life.

“You know, it’s really not a biopic,” he said. “It just takes a couple years out of my life when I was 31 and 32, and looks at them really at a time when I made this particular record, and when I went through some just difficult places in my life, you know. And, I’m old and I don’t give a fuck what I do now.”

The singer-songwriter explained that he and Cooper “had a very specific idea, particularly, of what we were gonna attempt to do” with the film.

Cooper previously praised White’s portrayal of The Boss, saying that the actor had “an intensity of vulnerability and authenticity”. He said: “Jeremy has two things that really, for me, make up Bruce Springsteen, and one is humility. And the other is swagger.”

Critics have largely praised White’s performance in the first reviews of Deliver Me From Nowhere, with one calling his transformation “nothing less than stunning”. Another writer described the movie as an “unorthodox” biopic, while acknowledging Cooper’s “choices that hinder Nowhere from being a truly great film”.

Alongside White, the film stars Succession‘s Jeremy Strong as Springsteen’s manager and producer Jon Landau, Adolescence‘s Stephen Graham as his father Douglas, and The Staircase‘s Odessa Young as love interest Faye Romano.

Springsteen visited White on set in New Jersey late last year before meeting the child actor who plays his younger self, Matthew Anthony Pellicano.

In other news, next month will see Springsteen finally release the legendary electric version of ‘Nebraska’. He has already previewed the collection with a demo version of ‘Born In The U.S.A.’.

Jon Stewart on Jimmy Kimmel Suspension: ‘Information Armageddon’

by jummy84 September 21, 2025
written by jummy84

As a response to Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension from ABC, Jon Stewart‘s special appearance on “The Daily Show” was more inferred than explicit. The celebrated host typically only sits behind the desk on Mondays, but made an exception Thursday night to lead the full team in a mock capitulation to Donald Trump.

On a set freshly adorned in the commander-in-chief’s favorite color and sporting a MAGA red tie, the “patriotically appropriate host” welcomed viewers with (what I imagine is only) slightly exaggerated anxiety. “Welcome to ‘The Daily Show’ on — I’m going to guess — Monday,” Stewart said. “We have another fun, hilarious… administration-compliant show.”

From there, Stewart moved forward with a standard lead story about the president’s visit to the U.K. that was framed by constant kowtowing to the “perfectly-tinted Trump.” Pausing from time to time to scold his audience for laughing at the wrong time and even slapping himself in the head for mistakenly pronouncing Armenia as Albania, Stewart’s extreme submissiveness worked well to highlight how he really felt about recent events and to acknowledge the very real fears of his audience.

If Trump wants to be a dictator, then Stewart will treat him like one — now, before it’s too late.

But for those who wanted the long-heralded satirist to speak more directly about Kimmel’s forced removal from late-night, Stewart got into it around the 10-minute mark via a clip of a British reporter asking Trump if free speech is “more under attack in Britain or America.” In mock fury, Stewart than recapped what the reporter was referring to — from the FCC “threatening” affiliates to those affiliates threatening Disney with an “ultimatum” of their own — all while “defending” Trump’s interpretation of the First Amendment.

“I don’” know who this Johnny Drimmel Live ABC character is,” Stewart said. “But the point is: Our great administration has laid out very clear rules about free speech. Now, some naysayers may argue that this administration’s speech concerns are merely a cynical ploy, a thin gruel of a ruse, a smokescreen to obscure an unprecedented consolidation of power and unitarian intimidation — principle-less and coldly antithetical to any experiment in a constitutional republic governance.”

“Not me, though,” he joked. “I think it’s great.”

After bringing on “The Daily Show’s” full team of correspondents for a literal song-and-dance (kudos to Jordan Klepper for hitting those high notes), Stewart then spent the bulk of the episode interviewing Maria Ressa, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist and author of the book “How to Stand Up to a Dictator.” Ressa was adamant in citing the similarities between the fall of democracy under Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines, her home country, and what she sees happening here in America. Both she and Stewart marveled at the speed at which each of their recent leaders collapsed the institutions meant to maintain a balance of power, including a legislative body that bent the knee and a judiciary that was under attack.

Notably, Ressa issued the same call to action twice, almost unprompted. “This is happening,” she said early in the interview. “If you do not reclaim your rights, if you don’t stand up, it’s going to be significantly harder to claw them back.”

Later, she described Americans as acting like “deer in headlights,” adding, “If you don’t move and protect the rights you have, you lose them. And it’s so much harder to reclaim them.”

While he didn’t say so himself, this was Stewart’s central message: Now is the time to act. Now is the time to speak up. Now is the time to establish what free speech really means, before it’s decided for us.

With Kimmel’s fate still hanging in the balance, it’s hard to think of a better stance to take. Despite what Trump has said, Kimmel has not been fired, and as of publishing this story, ABC has not provided an update on his suspension. Many late-night comedians have come to his defense, as they should, in addition to politicians and other prominent figures in entertainment. (Shout-out to Damon Lindelof for being among the first to commit to a Disney boycott if Kimmel’s suspension isn’t lifted, as well as all the protesters marching outside the Burbank lot.)

Ressa also said there were two ways she would describe our current moment: an information apocalypse or an information armageddon. And, as Stewart stressed she’s usually an optimistic person, she said she prefers the term armageddon “because I’m optimistic. Apocalypse is done, but armageddon is the battle. This is the battle.”

Even if he didn’t make a candid plea or straightforward statement, Stewart used his platform to defend Kimmel while urging everyone to keep fighting (“peacefully,” as he made sure to add). For “The Daily Show,” the timing, the presentation, and the format all stood out. Now, we all need to stand up.
