Mobb Deep: Infinite Album Review

by jummy84 October 8, 2025
written by jummy84

On paper, every dial imaginable has been set back. Outside of a stray COVID mention and a dumb Havoc bar about getting canceled for joking about someone’s chromosomes, references are either era-specific (“Taj Mahal” is named for the formerly Trump-owned casino) or universal enough to not matter. Instead of the stable of producers behind Infamous, Havoc handles 11 of the album’s 15 beats, with Alchemist embracing his grimy Murda Muzik and Infamy roots on the other four.

The best Havoc beats from Mobb Deep’s prime took familiar sounds and bent them into menacing shapes. Here, tracks like “The M. The O. The B. The B.” and “Mr. Magik” mix that menace with the muted drum patterns he used on Kanye’s The Life of Pablo, giving the low-end even more depth. Alchemist, for his part, falls back on the style that made him famous—all gutter drums and echoing samples. The glitzy fuzz of “Taj Mahal,” in particular, sounds like it was pulled off a lesser-known Street Sweepers mixtape, while “Score Points” and “My Era” wouldn’t sound out of place on his collaborative albums with Prodigy.

Prodigy has no half-way appearances, either; he has at least one verse on every song, and does the hooks for a chunk of them. P’s delivery is as curt and chilling as ever (“RIP, you can’t son me/My pop’s dead,” he deadpans on “My Era”), even when his writing treads well-worn ground. There were seams to tighten and holes to fill, but Havoc and Alchemist handle his vocals with care. Most importantly, Havoc and Prodigy’s chemistry remains intact. Neither has ever been a particularly showy writer or lyrical gymnast—their respective appeal comes from their pugilist directness and the way their personalities stayed burrowed deep in the cement of LeFrak City, no matter how high their stars ascended. In this sense, “Mr. Magik” gets the closest to vintage Mobb Deep, particularly when the two trade the mic every few bars to go in on their enemies while dodging CIA agents and laying up with mistresses. The same could be said for the shuffling “Easy Bruh,” anchored by a drumbreak, faint keys, sirens, and the tightest Prodigy raps on the whole album (“Niggas mad? Put a cape on ’em/Now they super mad” got a good laugh out of me). At its best, Infinite feels effortless in a way Mobb Deep hasn’t for years, the pair comfortable in their older, wearier skin.

The Smashing Pumpkins Announce 30th Anniversary Edition of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

The Smashing Pumpkins have announced a 30th anniversary edition of their seminal double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

The new expanded edition will be available November 21st as a 6-LP super deluxe edition and on January 9th as a 4-CD box set. Each contains the original tracklist along with 80 minutes of previously unreleased and recently unearthed recordings from the 1996 tour in support of the album.

“Unearthing these live recordings from the original lineup’s true, last large-scale tour was a labour of love, and for me certainly a bittersweet as once we blew apart in 1996, we were never quite the same: be it emotionally, or spiritually,” commented frontman Billy Corgan in a press release. “Thankfully, I can say this as the band is now enjoying our greatest public success since that time, and one can hear in these tapes the raw power that such nascent faith afforded us, then, and the will and wisdom to persevere that followed.”

The 6-LP deluxe vinyl box set also includes a hardbound book featuring new liner notes by Corgan, a custom tarot card deck, and seven lithographs in a velvet slipcase.

In addition to the expanded reissue, Corgan will also be celebrating the album’s anniversary with a seven-concert collaboration with the Lyric Opera of Chicago in November. Dubbed “A Night of Melon Collie and Infinite Sadness,” these shows will see Corgan performing newly commissioned arrangements and orchestrations he made alongside conductor James Lowe. Corgan will be joined by soprano Sydney Mancasola, mezzo-soprano Zoie Reams, tenor Dominick Chenes, and baritone Edward Parks. Dates include November 21st, 22nd, 25th, 26th, 28th, 29th, and 30th. Get tickets here.

Moreover, the Pumpkins are collaborating with Chicago-based chocolatier Vosges Haut-Chocolat on a limited-edition chocolate box set containing a limited-edition poster and six chocolate bars inspired by Mellon Collie songs.

You can pre-order the Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness reissues via uDiscovermusic. Check out the product photos, CD tracklist, and a newly unearthed live recording of “Geek U.S.A.” below.

Mobb Deep Announce New Album Infinite, Share New Song “Against the World”: Listen

For the first time since 2014, there will be a new Mobb Deep album: Infinite, the follow-up to The Infamous Mobb Deep, is out October 10 via Mass Appeal. Below, listen to the 15-track record’s Havoc-produced opener, “Against the World.” Scroll down for the new album’s artwork.

Infinite is the first album from Mobb Deep since the death of Prodigy in 2017. It’s also Prodigy’s second posthumous release, following 2022’s The Hegelian Dialectic 2: The Book of Heroine.

“This one feels like coming full circle,” Havoc stated in a press release. “It’s that classic Mobb energy—dark, real, unfiltered. The sound that shaped who we are but also speaks to where hip-hop is right now.”

A month after Infinite’s release, Havoc (under the Mobb Deep) banner will go on a co-headlining tour with Raekwon. He’ll be celebrating the 30th anniversary of Mobb Deep’s iconic sophomore album, 1995’s The Infamous.

Havoc Teases First Single From New Mobb Deep Album, ‘Infinite’

by jummy84 September 12, 2025
written by jummy84

Mobb Deep is returning with their first album in over a decade. Havoc has revealed that the group’s forthcoming LP is titled Infinite, and it’s set for release on October 10 via Mass Appeal Records.

The lead single, “Against The World,” finds Havoc and the late Prodigy trading verses over a soulful instrumental — a rare duo appearance since Prodigy’s passing in 2017.

Nas announced the project in an Instagram post on Monday (Sept. 8), teasing the album with the line, “@mobbdeepqb Against The World #Infinite coming soon.”

The next day, Havoc previewed “Against The World” on the Joe and Jada podcast. In his opening verse, Prodigy raps, “New York is just one crumb on the map/ One crumb ain’t a lot,” delivering his signature grit and aggression that fans have long associated with his style.

Infinite is being billed not just as a comeback for Mobb Deep, but also as a tribute. It’s their first full album since The Infamous Mobb Deep (2014), and it’s their first released after Prodigy’s death. The project is entirely produced by Havoc and The Alchemist, and uses unreleased vocals from Prodigy.

To recap Mobb Deep’s legacy: the duo, composed of Havoc and Prodigy, rose to prominence in the mid-1990s out of Queensbridge, New York. Their 1995 album The Infamous is considered a classic for its raw storytelling, menacing production, and vivid depictions of street life.

Over the years, they released several acclaimed albums like Hell on Earth (1996), Murda Muzik (1999), and Blood Money (2006), among others. Prodigy (born Albert Johnson) passed away on June 20, 2017, from complications related to sickle cell anemia.

Since his death, his estate has released his solo posthumous album, The Hegelian Dialectic 2: The Book of Heroine (2022), and also brought his solo catalog back to streaming platforms.

As Infinite approaches, it represents both an end and a preservation of what Mobb Deep has meant in hip-hop — honoring Prodigy’s voice, cementing their influence, and offering fans a proper swan song from one of rap’s favorite duos.
