From Anoushka Shankar to Asha Bhosle, Gorillaz’s The Mountain elevates Indian artists beyond exotic backdrops

Animated alternative rock band Gorillaz, led by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, have announced their ninth studio album The Mountain, releasing on March 20, 2026. This new project is a departure from the virtual band’s wide-ranging earlier catalogue – which usually blends alternative rock with synth-pop, electronica and hip-hop – incorporating Indian themes, Hindustani classical music, as well as collaborations with Indian artists including the likes of Anoushka Shankar and Asha Bhosle.

The artwork and tracklist

The album cover, artwork, and tracklist were revealed on social media on September 12. The album cover says “Parvat” in Hindi letters and the artwork features the four animated band members with various oriental overtones – Murdoc as a full-blown sanyasi or yogi wearing rudraksh-style beads, Russel sitting with a tuba donning a kurta-pajama set, complete with a pagri, Noodle acting as the bridge between the mystical and the modern, with a face full of Kabuki-inspired makeup, and 2D posing as the American traveler – and a representation of Nataraj in typical Gorillaz art style, holding various items including two crosses, a mobile phone and a sitar. It also features a royal Bengal tiger, a goat and a monkey.

The tracklist revealed epic collaborations in five different languages with artists including Asha Bhosle, Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash, Ajay Prasanna, Omar Souleyman, Asha Puthli, Anoushka Shankar, IDLES, Paul Simonon, Jalen Ngonda, and Johnny Marr from the Smiths (interesting, right?). In an interview with Rolling Stone UK, Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett discussed their inspiration behind the album, their travels to India, their experience collaborating with Indian artists, and the theme of life, death, and transition, which is central to the project.

From voiceless muse to cultural agency

When Hindustani classical music was first popularised in Western music by the Beatles, back in the 60s, they borrowed musical elements, including instruments like the sitar and tambura, and appropriated the ‘exotic’ soundscapes into British psychedelic rock. Ever since the hippies turned to India for spiritual and religious transcendence, the country has been branded as a kaleidoscopic land of psychedelic visions, trippy colours and drugged ascetics lost in mind-bending meditation. Along with this came the appropriation of Hindustani music – long sitar solos and tambura drones in the backdrop – again branded as exotic background ambience for the Western imagination rather than celebrated as the work of skilled Indian musicians.

Gorillaz’s new album marks a departure from this century’s old Western tradition of idealising the East as the exotic land without a voice – the narrative of representation and the politics of authenticity has always been controlled by the West. The album explores the fictional travels of the four animated bandmates through India, and was recorded in London, Devon, and places in India. In the Rolling Stone interview, both Albarn and Hewlett talk about going through tragic losses – the deaths of their fathers and Hewlett’s mother-in-law – and finding comfort in the attitudes of Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism towards death. Belonging to a fundamentally Anglo-Christian background, their response is comparable to the hippie movement’s attraction to the east.

Collaboration with Indian artists

The duo mentioned having their best time working with Indian artists and experiencing the country in ‘glorious technicolour’. One collaboration, however, stood out for Albarn – Anoushka Shankar. He was introduced to sitar virtuoso Pandit Ravi Shankar at an early age, courtesy of his parents’ deep appreciation for Indian classical music and ragas, and having the sitar guru’s daughter on his record marks a full circle moment for him. He told Rolling Stone, “I probably listened to Ravi Shankar before I listened to The Beatles when I was a kid,” and added, “to have Anoushka Shankar on the record is not only a real privilege, but the connection with my dad and his love of Ravi Shankar is great.”

This collaboration is not only a defining moment for Damon Albarn’s experience, but also marks a poetic return to the era when psych rock first wove Hindustani classical into its sonic tapestry – from the Beatles’ transformative journey to Rishikesh, where George Harrison learnt to play the sitar under the guidance of the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankar.

Allowing Indian artists to have a voice and representing them on the global stage restores an agency to Eastern culture that was long overdue. Unlike past Western projects that borrowed Indian sounds as exotic adornments, this album places Indian musicians and instruments at the heart of its sonic identity. From Anoushka Shankar’s sitar to the intricate rhythms of classical percussion, the contributions aren’t background flourishes – they shape the very texture of the music. In doing so, Gorillaz challenge the old orientalist template, transforming India from a passive muse into an active co-creator in a globally resonant soundscape.

Oncologist shares top 10 Indian foods that quietly supercharge your gut: Idli, dosa, dahi, curd rice, poha, ragi, moong

Gut health refers to the balance and well-being of the microbiome in your gastrointestinal tract. A healthy gut microbiome can aid in digestion, help the immune system function optimally, and even influence your mood and mental health. When this balance and diversity of gut microorganisms is disrupted, it can lead to health implications. So, how exactly can you improve gut health naturally? Also read | Nutritionist shares surprising probiotic, prebiotic foods in Indian kitchens apart from dahi

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Arpit Bansal, a laparoscopic surgeon and oncologist at Jeevan Jyoti Hospital, Prayagraj, shared that following a gut-friendly diet can be the first step towards improving gut health and overall well-being.

“A healthy gut isn’t built by fancy powders — it’s trained daily by simple, living foods that feed good microbes, strengthen the intestinal barrier, and reduce inflammation through short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs),” he said.

Dr Bansal shared a list of 10 everyday Indian staples ‘that are silent healers that can keep your microbiome thriving’. Here they are:

Buttermilk contains probiotics, which can support gut health by promoting beneficial bacteria.
Buttermilk contains probiotics, which can support gut health by promoting beneficial bacteria.

1. Dahi and chaas (Curd and buttermilk)

Dr Bansal said, “Rich in live cultures like lactobacillus, these traditional ferments improve lactose digestion, reinforce the gut lining, and balance immunity. Always try to go for plain, unsweetened versions.”

2. Idli and dosa batter (Fermented rice and lentils)

“Fermentation pre-digests carbs and proteins, improves mineral absorption, and seeds the gut with beneficial lactic acid bacteria. The microbial metabolites remain active even after you steam them,” Dr Bansal said.

3. Dal and legumes (Moong, masoor, rajma, chana)

He added, “Dals are prebiotics full of resistant starch and soluble fibre. They feed butyrate-producing bacteria, the major molecule that soothes inflammation and fortifies gut walls.”

4. Cooked-then-cooled rice (Curd rice, poha)

Dr Bansal said, “When rice cools, its starch crystallises into ‘resistant starch’, which microbes ferment to SCFAs. This reduces gut pH, regulates sugar peaks, and minimises inflammation.”

5. Raw banana (Kaccha kela)

Dr Bansal further said, “Green bananas contain a wealth of resistant starch and pectin — wonderful for feeding up helpful species, particularly after antibiotic treatment or gut upset.”

6. Millets (Ragi, jowar, bajra)

He added, “Apart from fibre, their polyphenols behave as ‘microbe trainers’, enhancing metabolic indicators and microbial diversity. They take time to digest, maintaining gut and glucose stability.”

7. Haldi (Turmeric)

According to the doctor, “Curcumin directly affects the microbiome, decreasing inflammation and oxidative stress while increasing microbial diversity. When taken with black pepper, it becomes more absorbable.”

8. Onion and garlic

Dr Bansal said, “Rich in inulin and fructooligosaccharides, they function as natural prebiotics that specifically support lactobacillus and bifidobacteria, two important factors in gut balance and general metabolic health.”

9. Fenugreek (methi)

“The soluble fibre galactomannan in methi seeds slows down the absorption of sugars and provides nourishment for gut microorganisms. Methi seeds can be soaked or the greens can be sautéed to increase their prebiotic activity and ease the digestive tract,” Dr Bansal said.

10. Kanji (Black carrot ferment)

He added, “A seasonal probiotic elixir, kanji teems with natural lactic acid bacteria that helps in digestion and builds resilience. It’s India’s age-old answer to kombucha.”

How to use foods from this list today

Dr Bansal suggested: “Anchor one fermented food (dahi, idli, or kanji) and one resistant starch source (dal, cooled rice, or raw banana) in every meal. Season liberally with haldi, garlic, and methi — and let your microbes do the rest.”

Mirai Review: Indian Mythology Meets Super Yodha Action In Teja Sajja’s Adventure

3.0 stars

Runtime: 2 hours and 49 minute

Mirai Review

Mirai stands out with its ambitious attempt to blend Indian mythology with a modern superhero template. The storyline revolving around the search for the 9th scripture (Granth) offers a Ramayan-inspired twist, making the film unique compared to typical superhero dramas.

Mirai follows the extraordinary tale of Ambika (Shriya Saran), a mother who sacrifices her life to protect humanity and safeguard the nine sacred scriptures that hold the power to transform mortals into deities. From her sacrifice is born Veda (Teja Sajja), destined to become the Super Yodha, a warrior chosen to savr the final and most powerful scripture the 9th Granth, Mirai. Standing against him is Mahavir Lama (Manoj Kumar Manchu), a ruthless asur who seeks the scripture to ascend as God. The film unfolds as a mythological superhero saga of sacrifice, destiny, and cosmic battle.

What Works

The scale is massive, with stunning visuals across the Himalayas, Varanasi, Hyderabad, Japan, Tibet, and Morocco, giving the film an international feel. Action sequences are choreographed with flair, and the mythological undertones provide a cultural depth that resonates with Indian audiences.

Teja Sajja power-packed performance in Mirai is the USP of the film. He effortlessly balances the intensity, emotion, and heroism in this fantasy adventure. His screen presence and action sequences make him a compelling super yodha. Director Karthik Gattamneni crafts a visually stunning spectacle, blending mythology with modern storytelling, while keeping the narrative engaging and larger-than-life.

What Doesn’t Work

While the film dares to be ambitious, the execution falters in parts. The screenplay sometimes feels stretched, with uneven pacing between the myth-lowkey dialogues and superhero action. Emotional beats don’t always land, and certain CGI portions fail to match the grandeur promised. The villain arc, though menacing, could have been more layered.

Technical Analysis

The cinematography is a major strength, capturing diverse landscapes beautifully. The VFX ranges from breathtaking to inconsistent, but the effort to create a larger-than-life superhero universe is commendable. The music and background score elevate key moments, though the editing could have been sharper to trim down the runtime.

Star Performances

Teja Sajja as Veda transforms into a compelling Super Yodha, balancing innocence with intensity. He carries the film’s weight on his shoulders.

Manoj Kumar Manchu as Mahavir Lama (Black Sword) delivers a striking performance as the ruthless asur bent on destroying mankind for the scripture.

Ritika Nayak as Vibha provides grace and emotional depth and is one of the most important character in the story.

Shriya Saran as Ambika brings elegance to her divine role. Her sacrifice for the people will touch your heart, also the performance is magnetic on screen.

The supporting cast including Tanjq Keller, Jagapathi Babu, Jayaram, Raghu Ram, Koushik Mahata, and Sriram Reddy add presence and give their valuable contribution to the storyline.

Conclusion

Mirai is a bold step in Telugu cinema’s superhero genre mythology meets Marvel-style spectacle. While not flawless, it’s a visual adventure that entertains and introduces audiences to a Ramayan-inspired superhero saga. Worth a watch for its scale and Teja Sajja’s committed performance, though it leaves room for sharper storytelling in a potential sequel.

Indian fashion fraternity mourns the death of Italian designer Giorgio Armani

by jummy84 September 4, 2025
written by jummy84

The Italian designer died at 91 due to age-related illness.

Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, popularly known as King Giorgio has died at 91. His demise has left a void in fashion and he was single-handedly responsible for rewriting the rules of fashion. The designer was the archetype of Italian style and built a multibillion-dollar fashion empire. His fashion house released a statement soon after his death. “Indefatigable to the end, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections and the many ongoing and future projects,” the statement said.

The iconic designer died at his house surrounded by his loved ones. He gave a miss to the June 2025 Milan Fashion Week for the first time, and was planning a major event to celebrate his brand’s 50 years during Milan Fashion Week this month.

Indian fashion designers and personalities poured in their condolences for the icon.

Sunil Sethi, FDCI Chairman

This is such a big loss for all of us. His name has been synonymous with fashion. I had the fortune of working with him for two years for the launch of Armani Casa. I was his guest at the opening of Armani Casa in Milan, where I met him personally. I was in awe of his personality. Meeting him was the biggest highlight of my life. My first meeting with him was in the year 1994 at Oberoi Hotel and had a brief interaction in the hotel’s elevator.

Rahul Mishra, Designer

Giorgio Armani’s passing marks the end of an era. He wasn’t only a master of elegance and restraint—he was the architect of how a designer could build a global brand. Armani created a business model that became a case study for generations: from Armani cafe, Armani Casa to multiple divisions under his name, he showed that creativity and structure can coexist at the highest level. For independent designers like myself, and even for conglomerates, his legacy is both wisdom and roadmap. Personally, for my study having lived in Milan and witnessed his vision up close, I can say his influence shaped my own path. His ideas, his craftsmanship, and his relentless vision will remain safe in history—and he will be deeply missed by us all…

Ritu Beri, Designer

The world has lost a true icon with the passing of Giorgio Armani. His vision redefined elegance and simplicity, leaving an indelible mark on global fashion. For me, Armani was the epitome of timeless style and creative genius, an inspiration whose legacy will live on forever.

Suneet Varma, Designer

Giorgio Armani, the maestro of timeless elegance, redefined modern fashion with his quiet confidence and pure lines. He gave the world a new order of style—where tailoring was softened, glamour became effortless, and jeans stood as a symbol of democracy in dress. Armani dressed presidents, film stars, and dreamers alike, yet his true genius was in making sophistication accessible. With his passing, we lose not just a designer, but a visionary who shaped how the world dresses forever.

Nachiket Barve, Designer

Giorgio Armani is an absolute legend whose contribution to fashion is eternal. Bringing ease and fluidity to menswear, sophisticated androgyny to women’s fashion and being one of the first designers to build and nurture an independent fashion empire, his legacy is large and inspiring to generations of designers. I continue to be inspired by his focus and timeless elegance as he built his signature over decades.

Rina Dhaka, Designer

As a young designer my only first big dream was to wear Armani head-to -toe. He exemplified quiet class in clothing, no logos sreaming what you are wearing. With time ofcourse newer brands came, but Monsieur Armani at 91 could still be seen at the end of the show walking tall though frail with age. Students in India in fashion in 2025 must read of his legacy his craft to understand my perspective.

Shilpa Shetty Shuts Down Bastian Bandra To Launch South Indian Restaurant Ammakai; Announces Bastian Beach Club Juhu

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Shilpa Shetty’s Bastian is not done with creating its legacy! The brand is looking forward to entering a new era! Recently, the social media page of Bastian Mumbai made an official announcement, stating that Bastian will undergo a transformation into Ammakai, a South Indian restaurant in Bandra, and it will also expand in Juhu with Bastian Beach Club, beginning from mid-October.

Biastian Bandra Will Now Be Called Ammakai

The statement read, “While you’re working hard at the ‘rumour mill’, today at Bastian, we’re serving ‘The Real Tea.’ Bandra was our beginning, and while that chapter closes, two new stories are waiting to be written. The Brand Steps Into a Next Era. Bastian Bandra, the flagship that started it, all bids adieu, the brand looks forward to opening new exciting new chapters in its culinary journey.”

“From mid-October, the iconic Bandra space will transform into Ammakai, a specialty South Indian restaurant. Meaning ‘the mother’s hand’, Ammakai embodies comfort, warmth, and authenticity. Ammakai pays homage to the depth of South Indian culinary traditions, recipes seeped in heritage, enriched with regional flavours, and brought to life with the impeccable service and quality synonymous with the Bastian name,” it added.

“At the same time, Bastian is expanding its vibrant spirit to the shores of Juhu with the Bastian Beach Club. This new coastal destination will capture the brand’s signature energy of indulgence and celebration. Bandra was where Bastian’s journey began, and it will always remain close to us. As we evolve, it feels right to honour the depth of South Indian cuisine through Ammakai while also bringing the energy and indulgence of Bastian to Juhu in a fresh new way. We’re closing one chapter, but two new stories are waiting to be written, and we can’t wait to welcome you into them,” it concluded.

This announcement refutes any rumours surrounding the shutdown of Bastian due to any financial issues. Instead, it’s a step ahead, with Shilpa Shetty at the fore once again.

Best Costumes, Moments From Brooklyn’s Annual West Indian Day Parade

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Brooklyn’s rich cultural fabric is stitched together by the many immigrant communities that call the borough home—but none have left quite as vibrant a mark as its thriving Caribbean population.

Each Labor Day, that influence takes center stage during J’Ouvert, an early-morning celebration of Caribbean pride that transforms the streets of Crown Heights into a lively, colorful Carnival, otherwise known as the West Indian Day Parade.

Running along Eastern Parkway, the West Indian Day Parade draws thousands from across the five boroughs and beyond. Revelers wave their flags high, dance to the rhythms of soca and steelpan, and fill the air with joy and liberation. Vendors line the sidewalks, offering everything from flavorful Caribbean dishes to festive regalia, adding to the high-energy, cultural immersion of the event.

And at the heart of it all? The unforgettable outfits and happening that occur throughout the day. Here are some of the most striking costumes, moments and looks from this year’s West Indian Day celebration.

Following its theatrical release on August 28, 2025, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, Malayalam cinema’s first female-led superhero movie starring Kalyani Priyadarshan in the lead role, received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. The Indian film industry has not produced many entries in the superhero genre, so comparisons with other notable titles are inevitable.

Let’s see how this ambitious Dominic Arun-directed film, bankrolled by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films, stacks up against some of the most popular modern Indian superhero movies like HanuMan, Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva, Minnal Murali, and Krish in terms of IMDb ratings. Is Lokah really the best Indian superhero movie so far? Let’s find out.

Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra vs. Popular Indian Superhero Movies – IMDb Ratings

As of now, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra holds an impressive IMDb user rating of 8.3/10. For comparison, here are the scores of some notable post-2000 Indian superhero films:

  1. Minnal Murali (2021) – 7.8/10
  2. HanuMan (2024) – 7.7/10
  3. Bhavesh Joshi Superhero (2018) – 7.6/10
  4. Maaveeran (2023) – 7.4/10
  5. Veeran (2023) – 7.3/10
  6. Krrish (2006) – 6.5/10
  7. Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva (2022) – 5.6/10
  8. Ra.One (2011) – 4.9/10

Clearly, none of the above modern Indian superhero films of the post-2000 era have surpassed Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra in IMDb ratings. The closest competitor is another Malayalam superhero film, Minnal Murali, with a 7.8/10 score. It will be interesting to see if Lokah can maintain its position as the highest-rated Indian superhero movie in the coming days.

What Is Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra About?

Directed by Dominic Arun, the film follows Chandra (Kalyani Priyadarshan), a mysterious woman who arrives in Bangalore for unknown reasons. She works night shifts at a café and lives opposite two jobless youths, Sunny (Naslen) and Venu (Chandu Salimkumar). While Sunny is drawn to her, he senses something unusual. As Chandra’s true identity emerges, she becomes entangled in a dangerous organ trafficking ring and must face dark forces threatening the world.

Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh lend their voices to Kailash Kher’s latest song Bharatiya Sena, his ode to Indian Armed Forces

Kailash Kher’s new song salutes the valour of Indian forces, with spoken lines by Cabinet ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh

For Kailash Kher, music has always been about more than melody. It has been about meaning. And with his latest release Bharatiya Sena, the singer-songwriter has turned his voice towards celebrating the might of the Indian armed forces.

Kailash Kher’s recent single celebrates the might of the Indian Armed Forces

Released on Saturday, the track stands apart from most patriotic songs. Instead of focusing on sacrifice and loss, the 52-year-old chose to highlight the strength, courage, and valour of India’s military. “I didn’t want to talk about the pain or the sacrifice this time. I wanted to bring out the power and the confidence that the Indian Army embodies, something the world is noticing today,” he says.

The project, which took over three months to produce, carries weight not only because of its theme but also because of the voices featured in it. The song includes spoken lines by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, lending it an added layer of authority and resonance. A video accompanying the song brings alive the scale and spirit of the armed forces that Kailash sought to capture.

Interestingly, this was not a song born out of personal whim. The Teri Deewani singer reveals that the idea came directly from the government. “The ministry approached me and asked if I could create something that celebrates the strength of our armed forces. For me, this was both a privilege and a responsibility,” he explains.

Known for his distinctive voice and deep-rooted connection to Indian traditions, Kailash says he approached Bharatiya Sena with the same sincerity that has marked his career. “Every note had to feel authentic. I wanted it to be a song that fills people with pride, the same way a soldier’s march fills the air with power,” he says.

As the song makes its way to listeners, Kailash hopes it does more than stir patriotic fervour. “This is about respect. Respect for the men and women who stand guard, and for the spirit of India that shines through them,” he says.

₹500 crore at box office: Where Rajinikanth starrer stands on list of highest grossing Indian films ever”>

Updated on: Aug 28, 2025 12:52 pm IST

Coolie, starring Rajinikanth, has become the third Indian film to breach the ₹500 crore mark at the worldwide box office this year.

Rajinikanth’s Coolie has entered the 500-crore club. On Wednesday, the Lokesh Kanagaraj-directed film crossed ₹500 crore worldwide gross. This makes it the third Indian film to do so in 2025, and the 27th overall. This also means that Rajinikanth is now among only the four Indian actors to have three such films (the other two being 2.0 and Jailer). But just how high is Coolie in the list of the highest-grossing Indian films?

₹500 crore at the box office.” title=”Rajinikanth’s Coolie has earned over ₹500 crore at the box office.” /> ₹500 crore at the box office.” title=”Rajinikanth’s Coolie has earned over ₹500 crore at the box office.” />
Rajinikanth’s Coolie has earned over ₹500 crore at the box office.

We take a look:

Coolie’s rank in highest-grossing Indian films

The Rajinikanth film currently ranks 27th among the highest-grossing Indian films. Just above it are three YRF films: Saiyaara ( ₹556 crore), Dhoom 3, and Tiger Zinda Hai ( ₹558 crore each). It is now the 4th highest-grossing Tamil film of all time, surpassing the lifetime box office collection of Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 ( ₹488 crore). The only Kollywood films ahead of it are 2.0 ( ₹723 crore), Jailer ( ₹610 crore), and Leo ( ₹605 crore).

Coolie enters top 10 South films in history

The four film industries colloquially called the ‘South’ – Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada – have all delivered multiple industry hits in the last decade, surpassing Hindi films on many occasions. That is why, despite earning over ₹500 crore, Coolie is ‘just’ ranked 10th in the list of highest-grossing South Indian films. It is behind Telugu films Baahubali 2, Pushpa 2, RRR, Kalki 2898 AD, Baahubali 1, and Salaar, as well as Kannada film KGF Chapter 2.

Coolie box office collection

Coolie earned ₹268.75 crore net ( ₹309 crore gross) in the domestic territories over its 14 days. Overseas, the Lokesh Kanagaraj film has earned just under $21 million overseas ( ₹182 crore). This takes its worldwide gross to ₹501 crore.

Coolie stars Rajinikanth in the titular role of a retired coolie and union leader who gets embroiled in a gang’s activities after his friend’s death. The film also stars Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, and Soubin Shahir, along with Upendra and Aamir Khan in special appearances.
