Consume Kiwis to fight constipation

One in ten people experiences persistent constipation, which can significantly lower a person’s quality of life. According to theNational Health Service (NHS), if you have not had a bowel motion at least three times in the past week, or if you are going less frequently than normal, you are constipated.

Dr Eirini Dimidi from King’s College London told the BBC: “People can report up to 30 different symptoms of constipation.” According to the latest guidelines, one should focus on fruits and drinks to fight constipation.

On that note, Dr Dimidi explained that people must eat two or three kiwis every day to improve constipation. “Even without the skin, it’s good and contains fibre,” Dimidi added.

The fibre in kiwi fruit has an effect on the gut that can cause bowel contractions and increase the volume of faeces. “Kiwi also increases water content in the gut, which may soften stools,” Dr Dimidi revealed. On the other hand, the fruits can improve immunity since they are rich in vitamin C. Additionally, kiwis can help manage blood pressure as they contain potassium.

Eating eight to ten prunes and some rye bread as a daily snack can also have a comparable impact.

The benefits of drinking mineral water

Dr Dimidi also claims that mineral water “is better than tap water”. Magnesium is an essential mineral that acts as a laxative. The study indicates that consuming magnesium oxide supplements has many advantages.

Magnesium oxide supplements can lessen lower abdominal pain, bloating, and straining as well as facilitate bowel movements.

According to Professor Kevin Whelan, the new guidance “marks a promising step towards empowering health professionals and their patients to manage constipation through diet”.

The British Dietetic Association also lauded the research by King’s College London. It said the latest guidance was “a more diet-focused and evidence-based approach to the management of chronic constipation”.

Tamannaah Bhatia’s fitness trainer revealed how you can increase your protein intake. (Picture credit: Instagram)

Celebrity fitness coach Siddhartha Singh, who has worked with stars like Tamannaah Bhatia, shared in a November 1 post about the versatile ingredient. “If you would ask me one thing, what you could include in your nutrition to up your protein in the easiest way possible. I would say Greek yoghurt,” he said, naming Greek yoghurt. It is one of the most convenient ways to boost daily protein without spending hours in the kitchen.

The fitness coach shared these 3 reasons why Greek yoghurt works so well to improve your protein intake.

1. Versatile

The first reason the fitness coach pointed out was Greek yoghurt’s versatility. It’s a blank canvas for healthy eating as it fits in for both sweet and savoury treats.

Siddhartha elaborated,“If you add fruits into your Greek yoghurt, it becomes a sweet snack; at the same time, if you add something like, say, peanut butter and nuts, it becomes a savoury snack. So the versatility is amazing.”

This way, Greek yoghurt can multitask for you as the flavour notes of Greek yoghurt work for all kinds of dishes.

2. No cooking

The next reason is that Greek yoghurt doesn’t require you to cook. Siddhartha highlighted that you can simply place a quick order on a 10-minute delivery app, and you will have a ready-to-eat, high-protein snack within minutes. He called it, ‘an amazing high protein snack at your disposal.’

3. Beneficial for gut health

Other than being a great source of protein, Greek yoghurt also contains probiotics.

“Greek yoghurt has probiotics, so basically it’s great for your gut, so instead of taking random supplements off the counter to get your pre and probiotics in, just have some Greek yoghurt, ”Siddhartha explained. Greek yoghurt is also a more accessible and easier way to support gut health, over the supplements.

Dr Sethi titled his September 17 Instagram post, ‘4 simple things to improve your gut health ASAP (as soon as possible),’ and wrote in his caption: “Your gut health impacts digestion, energy, and even your immune system. These 4 tips are science-backed, easy to follow, and make a BIG difference.”

According to Dr Sethi, prebiotics serve as food for beneficial gut bacteria, promoting a healthy gut microbiome, while probiotics introduce beneficial bacteria to the gut, enhancing digestion and immunity. He added that a high-fibre diet supports gut health, satiety, and overall well-being. Dr Sethi further shared that adequate hydration was crucial for fibre absorption and gut function.

1. Eat more prebiotic foods

In the video he posted, Dr Sethi said: “First, eat more prebiotic foods like garlic, onions, and asparagus. Prebiotics are the food for our gut bacteria.”

2. Include probiotic-rich foods

“Second, eat more probiotic-rich foods. For example, yoghurt, dahi, kaffir, kombucha, kimchi, and idli,” he added.

3. Consume high-fibre foods

Dr Sethi said, “Third, eat more high-fibre foods. For example, chia seeds, berries, and oatmeal. These are all high in fibre. People who eat more fibre, live longer and have less acid reflux and less constipation. Aim for 30 grams of fibre daily.”

4. Drink more water

He concluded: “And fourth, increase your water intake. Fibre and water go hand in hand. Fibre absorbs water. Aim for around 8 glasses of water daily.”

Anant Ambani's fitness trainer says simple movements like ‘sitting cross-legged, squatting’ can improve joint health

Anant Ambani’s fitness trainer says simple movements like ‘sitting cross-legged, squatting’ can improve joint health

From sitting in chairs all day to avoiding natural movements like squatting or sitting cross-legged, modern habits are quietly weakening our joints and core. Celebrity fitness trainer Vinod Channa, who helped Anant Ambani and Nita Ambani with their weight loss journeys, explains in his September 16 Instagram post why reconnecting with these basic postures is essential for long-term health. (Also read: Fitness coach says ‘walk like your life depends on it’, shares 10 rules to melt belly fat and get lean by New Year )

Fitness trainer Vinod Channa advocates for traditional movements to combat modern sedentary habits.

Why are people struggling with basic movements today

Vinod explains in his post, “I tell people who come to the bot centre that they don’t do any intense or beneficial workouts. Whether it’s getting up, sitting down, some agility work, speed, endurance, or power, they avoid it.”

He adds, “The main reason for this is that nowadays, everybody sits at a 90-degree angle, and the lower body strength required for squatting has been lost. Their ankles, knees, hip joints, core strength, and elbows are all weak. That’s why they struggle with getting up, sitting down, and performing agility movements. They don’t even spend a full hour in 24 hours doing basic human activities like walking or moving around.”

Can simple routines keep your body strong

Highlighting the importance of simple routines, he says, “Even a simple hour of walking in a day is enough to maintain your joint and overall body strength. The lack of this is the reason for weakness. So whenever you get a chance, sit down to eat in a squatting position.”

Calling it the most natural way to use the body, Vinod concludes, “This is the traditional Indian style and is the best way, it engages elbows, wrists, shoulders, and hip joints while eating. Always try to use your joints and muscles whenever you get the opportunity.”

Geriatrician shares 4 tips for older adults to improve mental health: From solving puzzles to doing meditation | Health

Mental health needs to be supported with healthy habits to ensure overall wellbeing in older adults.

Mental health is closely connected to physical health, with factors like the gut-brain axis making it even more prominent. On top of that, as one ages, mental wellness can decline due to stress from major life events, such as the death of a spouse, chronic illness or retirement. Along with this, old age also carries the natural risks of cognitive decline. All these make taking care of mental health during old age a non-negotiable priority.

To address the concerns of old age mental wellness, Dr Prasun Chatterjee, Chief of Geriatric Medicine at Artemis Hospitals, shared with HT Lifestyle how to keep the mind healthy and resilient during old age.

He said, “Taking care of our mental health is just as important as taking care of our physical health as we get older. A healthy mind keeps older people independent, active, and happy. Small, regular efforts can make a big difference in helping seniors. Every stress kills some important memory cells, so managing stress in middle age and later life is very important for a healthy mind. ”

Here are 4 tips he shared for older adults for better mental health:

1. Stay mentally active:

  • Stay mentally active by reading, doing puzzles, playing memory games, or learning new things. This will keep your brain sharp.
  • Doing things that make your mind work can slow down cognitive decline and help your memory.

2. Maintain social connections:

  • Being alone and lonely can be bad for your mental health. Talk to family, friends, or community groups on a regular basis.
  • Being social makes you feel better, lowers anxiety, and helps keep you from getting depressed.

3. Put your physical health first:

  • Eating well, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly all have a direct effect on how your brain works.
  • Walking, doing yoga, or light strength training are all good for your brain because they increase blood flow to it. This helps with memory and thinking.

4. Practice mindfulness and relaxation:

  • This helps you clear your mind when you’re stressed or anxious.
  • Meditation, deep breathing, or gentle hobbies like gardening can help you relax, focus better, and feel better emotionally.
