Romain Gavras’ Eco-Satire Has An Emotional Impact

For a book that not many people know about or have read, James George Frazer’s The Golden Bough (1890) has had quite an impact on cult cinema, particularly in the ’70s. For reasons that would take too long to go into here — and thanks to its influence on Joseph Campbell’s 1949 book The Hero with a Thousand Faces — it turns out that Frazer’s non-fiction investigation of religion, mythology, folk tales and the subsequent journey to science has since shaped films as seemingly far afield as The Wicker Man, the very first Star Wars, and Apocalypse Now. Well, you wouldn’t necessarily ever put those three films on a triple bill, but, once you see it, there is a certain overlap, mostly in the concept of the unwitting hero, a man chosen by fate, and not necessarily for the better.

With that in mind, Greek-French director Romain Gavras’s Sacrifice, his English-language debut, comes at a very interesting time in the world’s history. Though outwardly a blunt comedy (of sorts), it’s a film that, through its central character, asks questions about seeking out actual heroism within the fog of tokenism.

That character is Mike Tyler (Chris Evans), a Hollywood star recovering from a recent nervous breakdown and attending a garish eco-friendly charity party for the super-super-rich that’s being held in a fantastically austere Greek mine. Tyler, conflicted even about his own attendance, is sceptical about everyone else’s motives and says so, calling out the event’s star guest, environmental billionaire Ben Bracken (Vincent Cassel), on a live video stream for his hypocritical politics, condemning the mining of fossil fuels yet happy to exploit the sea for energy.

To backtrack, Gavras’ film is an odd fish in that respect, because, despite the comedic veneer, its agenda is actually very real, and that’s how it starts. Before we meet Tyler, we see Joan (Anya Taylor-Joy) overseeing the fiery funeral of her own mother (who, worryingly, might not actually be dead yet). Joan is the leader of what looks like a teenage militia from The Village of the Damned (1960 or 1995, take your pick), and she’s on a mission. “The old way must burn to ash,” she says, under orders from a nearby volcano. Which is what guides her, and her two siblings, to storm the event and take its guests hostage — while Tyler is in the bathroom, licking his wounds after his mic drop moment goes horribly viral.

The gala itself is a cringeworthy as you might expect, the imminent climate catastrophe spelled out to the private jet-ferried audience through — what else? — the medium of an interpretative dance battle and a neon sign saying “MAKE EARTH COOL AGAIN”. In fact, it’s so cheesy that it takes a while for the guests to realize that Joan and her army aren’t part of the entertainment too; it’s only when the blood starts to flow that they realize she’s serious. At which point Tyler re-enters the room and is given up by the terrified crowd (and, more importantly, anointed by Joan) as one of three people — including Bracken and one of the show’s dancers — who must make the film’s titular sacrifice to save the world from an imminent catastrophe.

As a hostage, Tyler gets Stockholm Syndrome early on, taking all this to be student hijinks (“No justice, no peace,” he roars to the media), much to the annoyance of Bracken, who accuses him of promoting what he calls “Green Isis”. The ratio of laughs to drama changes quite sharply, however, as Joan takes her hostages off on their journey, leading to a bond with Tyler and a lot of unexpected revelations about Joan’s background.

You might think you know where all this is going, and the script does cover a lot of those bases, most of them involving movie stars’ egos and their power and privilege in the real world. But Sacrifice is interesting, not just because it takes risks even within its own sui generis genre (note to self: is sci-fi folk horror a thing yet?) but because it’s actually quite clear in its thinking: What constitutes is a sacrifice in today’s world?

As Tyler, Evans holds the film surprisingly well, given the twists and turns (in story as well as tone) that await him, and the poker-faced Taylor-Joy, never more serious (and quite convincingly playing way younger than she actually is), is a great foil to that. To make things even more entertaining, John Malkovich pops up as what seems, briefly, to be the voice of reason.

In short, it’s nuts, and not for everyone. But Sacrifice does have a message, and it’s about the ouroboros — the perpetual self-eating snake — that is the world’s performative reaction to climate change. It goes further than where you might not think it will, and the emotional payoff from that may well outlast the jokes.

From Fat Shaming To Stardom: Mithun Chakraborty’s Impact On This Actress’s Career | Glamsham.com

Many aspiring actors arrive in Mumbai dreaming of stardom, but not all find success easily — even those with film lineage. Shilpa Shirodkar, granddaughter of legendary Marathi actress Meenakshi Shirodkar and sister of Miss India 1993 Namrata Shirodkar, faced her share of harsh rejection in Bollywood.

Labelled ‘Unattractive’ Despite Her Talent

Shilpa made her acting debut in 1989 in Ramesh Sippy’s Bhrashtachar, playing a blind woman opposite Mithun Chakraborty. Despite her strong performance, she was quickly labelled as “fat,” “unattractive,” and even “unlucky” by the industry. Originally set to debut opposite Sanjay Kapoor in a Boney Kapoor production, the project was shelved. Two more of her films met the same fate, earning her the unfortunate tag of a jinx.

Mithun Chakraborty Changed Her Fate

In a candid interview with Pinkvilla, Shilpa revealed how veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty played a crucial role in launching her career. Madhuri Dixit’s then-manager Riku Rakesh Nath introduced her to Mithun, who promised to help. During the muhurat of a Bengali film in Kolkata, it was officially announced that Shilpa would be the lead actress — a turning point in her struggling career.

She acknowledges Mithun’s contribution openly, saying, “I got the offer for Bhrashtachar because of Dada (Mithun Chakraborty). I am here today because of him.”

A Modest Film Career and a Peaceful Life Beyond

Shilpa went on to act in films like Hum (1991), Khuda Gawah (1992), and Aankhen (1993), sharing screens with Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda. Although she didn’t achieve superstar status, she earned a respectable place in Bollywood.

Later, she stepped away from acting, got married, and settled in London, choosing a peaceful life away from the limelight.

Lambrini Girls’ Selin Macieira-Boşgelmez to “take a step back from live shows” due to “seek medical help” on severe impact of touring with disabilities

Lambrini Girls bassist Selin Macieira-Boşgelmez has announced that she is taking “a step back from live shows”.

  • READ MORE: Lambrini Girls are all bark and tons of bite

The band are set to embark on a US tour later this month and a 19-date trek across the UK and Europe starting on November 19 at London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town.

But Macieira in a lengthy post on her Instagram page, has announced she will not be part of the US tour and Big Girl’s Kaitlin Pelkey will be filling in for her.

“Hello. I want to talk about something quite personal, partially because of my violent need to be deeply understood by those in my life, partially in order to be transparent about touring with disabilities in hopes to raise awareness, in hopes, that people in my position can relate and feel less alone,” she began before adding: “And also because I’ve never understood, nor had the desire to understand, the taboo of being very personal with strangers.”

She continued: “Being in this band has taken me places and shown me things I never thought I’d see, and I’m forever grateful that I get to play shows for a living and write music that people enjoy.

“But after extensive touring, I’ve been forced to come face to face with my limit. I’ve always struggled badly in touring environments, and despite my best efforts, those struggles have consumed me entirely and spat me out again.”

Macieira goes on to explain that she was diagnosed as being bipolar and with autism four years ago and after touring last year she “developed a physical tic, that has since progressed to a vocal tic” and is “causing me a lot of distress and pain.”

“I’ve never wanted anything more in my life than to be able to exist normally in this world, and having the realisation that this is not possible has put me in a dangerous place mentally,” she said.

“I have to withdraw and try to simulate a safe environment, to mend the foundations I’ve cracked in myself to try and come back to myself. Unfortunately this means I will be taking a step back from live shows with Lambrini Girls, to give myself a chance to seek medical help.

“Our scheduled shows are still going ahead and I’ll appear on stage when I’m able, but for our upcoming US tour you’ll have the brilliant Kaitlin Pelkey from Big Girl filling in for me on bass.”

Macieira went to say that she is tired of being “expected to be ‘loud’ and ‘energetic’ – to be ‘on’ all the time.”

She concluded: “I’m tired of feeling like being quiet in this band is weakness and inadequacy, like it’s not enough. I’ve betrayed myself for so long at nobody’s cost but my own. No more cosplaying from me. Peace up, A-town.”

The duo’s debut album ‘Who Let The Dogs Out’ was released earlier this year. In a glowing five-star review of the LP, NME shared: “Lambrini Girls prove punk is alive and kicking. They’re unapologetically amplifying chaos, calling out societal wrongs, and daring us all to feel something. This record is loud, raw, and impossible to ignore.”

Lambrini Girls are due to kick off their UK tour on November 19. Check out a full list of tour dates here and visit here to purchase tickets.

GURU RANDHAWA’S FUTURE IN JEOPARDY?” – Singer Faces Severe Criticism Over Azul Music Video, Could It Impact His Career? | Glamsham.com

Guru Randhawa’s new song Azul has gone viral within no time, but not for all the good reasons. The music video where Randhawa is a photographer who goes to an all-girls school to take a class photo has come under immense flak for s*xualizing schoolgirls and depicting them in a derogatory way.

Representing Schoolgirls and Alcohol Metaphors
The clip starts by announcing it’s “highly addictive.” But audiences were stunned to see Randhawa not only sexualising school-going girls (played by adult women) but even comparing them with different types and brands of alcohol. The singer makes at least 15 references to alcohol throughout the song, employing them as metaphors to describe women’s looks, aura, and personality. Critics are of the opinion that such comparisons are tone-deaf and insensitive, particularly in 2025, when women’s representation discourse is more prevalent than ever.

Public Outrage and Criticism
The track has also triggered outrage on social media platforms, with numerous women condemning Randhawa for peddling a “pornographic fetishisation” of children. According to them, while the roles are played by adults, the school environment validates a sick message that normalises harassment and objectification of teenage girls. Some netizens criticized the video for celebrating improper fantasies in the name of music and entertainment.

Silence from the Singer
With the backlash on the rise, Randhawa has not yet released a statement. Still, he has already disabled comments on his Instagram posts, which shows him being cognizant of the controversy. This only ignited more debate, as fans and critics alike wait to hear if the singer responds to the criticism.

Cultural Context
Though Punjabi music has had a tradition of comparing women to booze, Randhawa’s Azul is in the dock for overstepping. The mix of school references and drunken analogies has seemed to many as socially irresponsible and has brought the singer into the spotlight.

Netflix Unveils Impact Report for Thailand

by jummy84 August 22, 2025
written by jummy84

It’s been less than a decade since Netflix first became available in Thailand and only six years since it made its Thai-based production debut with the drama series “The Stranded” but, as it revealed in its first-ever Impact Report on Wednesday, the streamer is clearly just getting started in the country.

The report, “Netflix in Thailand: Supporting the Future of Local Storytelling,” was unveiled at a press event at the 515 Victory event space in Bangkok with Thai government officials, filmmakers, press members and Netflix executives in attendance.

Netflix invested $200 million in Thai-based productions, which resulted in 20 films and series and employed 13,500 cast and crew across all levels of the creative industry between 2021 and 2024, according to the report, which also pointed out that the streamer has regularly licensed existing Thai titles that have also been a part of the programming slate.

Its 2025 slate consists of nine local originals, including six films (“Ziam,” the just-released “Gold Rush Gang” and upcoming “Same Day with Someone”) and three series (“Dalah: Death and Flowers,” “Mad Unicorn” and the upcoming second season of “The Believers”).

“With a dedicated team in Bangkok, we’re deeply rooted in Thailand’s creative community. Our productions go beyond the beautiful locations of Thailand to tap into the artistry and authenticity of local storytelling. We’re collaborating with exciting local creators to tell stories that they can’t tell anywhere else, and that resonate deeply with Thai audiences,” says Malobika Banerji, head of content in Southeast Asia at Netflix. “Today’s new report showcases how Netflix’s investment contributes to Thailand’s creative economy — highlighting the scale of our support and its impact in creating jobs, building capabilities, and expanding local opportunities,” Banerji continued.

Following the report unveiling, a panel further exploring Netflix’s commitment to Thai productions was held with Ruben Hattari, Netflix’s director of global affairs in Southeast Asia; Prabda Yoon, producer and writer of Netflix’s film “Bangkok Breaking: Heaven and Hell” and series “Dalah: Death and the Flowers;” and Chakrit Pichyangkul, executive director and creative economy agency (CEA) participating.

Hattari said Netflix has been focusing on authentic Thai content to reflect the community and culture not only for the sake of Thai audiences but international audiences that are also watching the programming. In fact, more than 15 Thai originals have landed in the streamer’s Global Top 10 Non-English list.

While horror is a huge draw to Thai audiences, other popular genres in Thailand are comedy drama and BL (Boys’ Love) projects, Yoon said. Hattari added that “One of the wonderful things about Netflix is that we are available in over 190 countries, and we have over 300 million members and no two members enjoy the same taste so when you think about bringing content to our service, we want to make sure that we have as diverse content as possible.” So far, that broad thinking and execution of projects clearly has served the streamer very well.

“We have seen a growing appreciation for local content not only in domestic markets but across other countries as well,” Hattari said during the panel. “In 2024 alone on our service, roughly more than 750 million hours were spent watching Thai content. Hopefully that number will continue to grow and we can only do that through the wonderful partnerships.”

Those partnerships come from the country’s generous government incentives but also through partnerships with other companies, like the Creative Economy Agency which also invests in talent and emerging technologies. “Through CEA’s Content Lab, we are nurturing local talent and fueling the growth of Thailand’s creative industries,” says Pichyangkul. “In partnership with Netflix’s Fund for Creative Equity, we empower emerging creators in cities beyond Bangkok, equipping them with skills, fostering inclusion and helping advance Thailand’s ambition to upskill 20 million people by 2027.”

The panelists also agreed that local authenticity can only be achieved by both understanding and being an active part of the creative landscape on the local level. “We want to understand the local nuances and we want to understand the local taste and preference and we can only do that if we have a strong local team,” Hattari said. “We do that by having folks here that are on the ground that really are deeply rooted in the film industry that really understand all of the tastes and also understand the partners, as well.” In addition, he said working in the local ecosystem can also help them maintain the authenticity in their productions now and into the future.

Netflix is also having a big impact on local tourism. The report indeed stressed that productions are not only focused on metropolitan centers like Bangkok but lesser-known areas of Thailand, which has helped boost tourism in those spaces. For example, the 2024 series “Master of the House” filmed at Chateau De Khaoyai in Nakhon Ratchasima, the country’s third largest city, while the 2023 film “Analog Squad” filmed in mountains and beaches found in the south in Phang Nga.
