Out in theaters at the end of the year just in time for Christmas. Directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan, Footloose), this is a fictional adaptation of the documentary of the same name – about Lightning and Thunder, a Milwaukee husband and wife Neil Diamond tribute act, experience soaring success and devastating heartbreak in their musical journey together. The upbeat music film stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as Mike Sardina and Claire Sardina. Two down-on-their-luck musicians form a joyous Neil Diamond tribute band, proving it is never too late to find love and to follow your dreams. Also starring Michael Imperioli, Ella Anderson, King Princess, Mustafa Shakir, Hudson Hensley, with Fisher Stevens and Jim Belushi. It looks joyous & upbeat & entertaining in all the right ways. Of course “Sweet Caroline” – everyone loves that song.

Kate Hudson felt ‘magic’ with Hugh Jackman on Song Sung Blue

Kate Hudson claims “it’s hard not to fall in love” with Hugh Jackman.

Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman star in Song Sung Blue together

The 46-year-old star has worked with the Australian actor on the new movie Song Sung Blue – based on the true story of married couple Mike and Claire Sardina who formed the Neil Diamond tribute act Lightning and Thunder – and felt “magic” collaborating with The Greatest Showman star.

Kate told The Hollywood Reporter at the movie’s AFI Fest premiere on Sunday (26.10.25): “It’s hard not to feel magic with Hugh; he’s a magical, sparkly man. He’s got this very youthful spirit, and his generosity of spirit is wide and large. So I feel like it’s hard not to fall in love with him; he’s really wonderful.”

The pair sing together in the movie and Hudson explained that practicing their vocals improved the on-screen chemistry between the duo.

Reflecting on their first time singing together, the Almost Famous star said: “We got in there and I think it was like finding the vibe because it’s one thing to record for a recording, it’s another thing to record for live, which is what we were doing; it was kind of fun to find the imperfections and what we were going to be doing on the day.

“It was a great way to get to know each other for us too because we’re in the studio for hours – before we got to go on set and play this very intimate married couple, we got to spend good time together.”

Song Sung Blue’s writer-director Craig Brewer was glowing in his praise of Hudson and Jackman, 57, as he shared fond memories of the production.

The 53-year-old filmmaker recalled: “That was magical, it really was. Getting them into the studio for the first time, watching them sing harmony for each other, it was just beautiful.

“The whole crew just said the same thing – they were like, ‘This is what we wanted, we just didn’t know we wanted it.’

“And it was just infectious; everybody on the set every day would just gather around the screens and just see the chemistry between the two of them.”

Hugh Jackman, Kate Hudson Neil Diamond Movie

by jummy84 October 27, 2025
written by jummy84

The best Neil Diamond songs share a few simple traits: they’re catchy enough to unite the largest crowds on the planet, deeply sentimental, and refuse to make even the slightest effort to be cool. They have a real egalitarian streak to them, making the case that everyone has a voice worth using and the world is a better place when we all sing along at the top of our lungs.

All of the same could be said about Craig Brewer’s “Song Sung Blue,” a soapy film about the stranger than fiction story of Mike and Claire Sardina, a couple whose Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder propelled them to the apex of the Milwaukee tribute band circuit in the 1980s and ’90s. Adapted from Greg Kohs’ 2008 documentary of the same name, it treats a middle-aged mechanic and hairdresser who cover “Cracklin’ Rosie” in sequined jumpsuits with all the seriousness that you’ll find in any “Walk Hard”-esque rock and roll biopic. The stakes might be infinitely lower, but the rise, fall, and rise again are all there.

Kris Bowers and Ben Proudfoot of the 'The Last Repair Shop' attend 96th Oscar Week Events: Live Action Short Film, Documentary Short Film, and Documentary Feature Film at Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

Mike Sardina (Hugh Jackman) has already lived a few full lives by the time we meet him on the 20th anniversary of his sobriety. A former Marine who battled addiction after coming home from Vietnam, he now plays music in any dive bar and county fair that will have him. Whether he’s playing guitar in a Black soul cover band or singing “Eye of the Tiger” under his preferred stage name Lightning, he follows the music wherever it takes him. But he becomes more and more frustrated with the fact that all of his paying gigs seem to require him to impersonate someone else. Everything seems to collapse out from under him when he backs out of playing Don Ho on a tribute act bill organized by a 52-year-old Buddy Holly impersonator (Michael Imperioli), who has been singing “Not Fade Away” for three decades longer than the real Holly ever got a chance to. Mike can’t understand why he can’t just perform as himself for a change, but a beautiful Patsy Cline impersonator points out that “nostalgia sells.”

That wise woman turns out to be Claire (Kate Hudson), who soon becomes Mike’s second wife and first (and only) performing partner. They form a new act called Lightning & Thunder — not a tribute band, they insist, but a Neil Diamond experience. A notable difference from the competition is that Mike never claims to be presenting himself as Diamond (even if his costumes are sparkly enough). They’re simply being themselves, offering interpretations of the music without the pressure to be carbon copies. Bolstered by an elite management team that includes Mike’s dentist (Fisher Stevens) and a local casino tour bus mogul (Jim Belushi), they soon find their local popularity skyrocketing once Mike reluctantly agrees to start opening with “Sweet Caroline.”

But every great music story needs a downfall, and “Song Sung Blue” offers plenty of them. At the risk of spoiling a 30-year-old true story, Claire loses a leg in a freak car accident and spirals into depression as she recovers. Mike also battles his own problems, and the pressure of keeping their blended family together while finding a way to pay their bills as working class performers weighs on them. Music brought them together and gave them the happiest years of their lives, but they’re forced to decide if it’s still enough.

Both Jackman and Hudson pour everything they have into their characters, and “Song Sung Blue” is at its most infectious when we’re watching this couple bask in the dorky pleasures of singing Neil Diamond songs loudly enough to drown out the painful realities of life. At two hours and 11 minutes, the film often feels overstuffed and too melodramatic for its own good — this movie did not need a single dream sequence, let alone multiple — and it touches on so many sensitive topics that its takes on addiction, teen pregnancy, PTSD, health insurance bureaucracy, and other social ills often feel shoehorned in with insufficient time for exploration. But even with those flaws, it’s still hard to look away from the silly sincerity that powers the film.

A dominant theme throughout “Song Sung Blue” is its defense of the kind of life that seems average and unremarkable compared to the other stories you’ll find playing at your local multiplex. “Sobriety makes you confront some hard truths,” Mike says at one point. “I know I’m not a star or a songwriter, I just want to entertain people and make a living.” The rest of the film tries to answer the question of whether someone who, by their own admission, does not have any particularly unique talent has any business pursuing such a dream. Its tensest story beats revolve around Milwaukee casino residencies and karaoke hosting gigs at all-you-can-eat Thai buffets. The biggest opportunity that’s ever at stake is the chance to play a theater show of Neil Diamond covers on the same night the real Neil Diamond is playing a show across town — even at the height of their powers, Mike and Claire are competing for the chance to be the second best opportunity to hear “Sweet Caroline” in a 25-mile radius.

But rather than mock their small-time dealings or direct them to chase brighter lights, “Song Sung Blue” treats Mike and Claire’s pursuit of tribute band glory as a sufficient driving force for a meaningful life. This isn’t a story about how you’re never too old to chase your wildest dreams and play in the big leagues; it’s about how there shouldn’t be any shame in realizing that you are. There’s no real money to be made or legacy to be forged in their line of work, but their love was never stronger than when they were belting out Neil Diamond covers together on stage. The satisfied customers who left the venue smiling each night were just an added bonus.

If that all sounds too sentimental for your tastes, fair enough — though in that case, it’s hard to imagine you were ever particularly moved by a song like “Forever in Blue Jeans,” and thus not the target audience for “Song Sung Blue.” But if the right Diamond song at the right time can turn you into mush, you’re likely to find that Brewer’s film is capable of tugging on the same heartstrings.

At the film’s AFI Fest premiere, Jackman told the audience that he had just finished a FaceTime conversation with the real Diamond (who retired from performing in 2018 due to his battle with Parkinson’s Disease) before taking the stage, and asked the legendary songwriter if he had a message for the crowd. Jackman said that Diamond’s response was simple: “Just keep singing.” Brewer’s film embodies that message to its core, and anyone who wishes they had a little more Neil Diamond in their life now has an excuse to sing a little more.

Grade: B-

“Song Sung Blue” premiered at AFI Fest 2025. Focus Features will release it in theaters on Thursday, December 25.

Hugh Jackman, Kate Hudson Find Love & Diamond

written by jummy84

If Song Sung Blue, which had its World Premiere as the Closing Night film of AFI Fest, weren’t a true story no one would ever have the nerve to make it. The unlikely triumphs and unspeakable tragedies of a Milwaukee Neil Diamond tribute band known as Lightning And Thunder may take some dramatic liberties (what true story doesn’t) along the way but the undeniably jaw-dropping realities of their story are so astonishing – and all here – that it isn’t surprising director Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) found it irresistible material for a movie.

Based on Greg Koh’s 2008 documentary, the story revolves around a pair of working class wannabe star singers who are basically reduced to being vocal impressionists in dive bars and local clubs where they get up and sing when they aren’t doing their day jobs. Mike Sardina (Hugh Jackman) is a divorced Vietnam vet, recovering alcoholic, and mechanic who believes in his musical mojo. Claire Stengl (Kate Hudson) is a single mom of two, Rachel (Ella Anderson) and Dayna (Hudson Hensley), working as a hairdresser by day, being a good, if struggling single mom, and performing as a Patsy Cline impersonator many nights. She finds joy in the music. Mike is a little more complicated. They discover each other, and at Claire’s suggestion they form a Neil Diamond tribute band with their stage names Lightning and Thunder. Mike really didn’t see this coming but for the love of Claire and maybe a new life he goes along.

Soon he finds he is a damn good substitute for Diamond (Jackman doing a Risky Business-like routine in his underwear seals the deal), their harmony -personally and on stage- clicks with a lovely rendition of “Play Me” , leading to local gigs and increasing notoriety in Milwaukee and environs. Joined by a back up band including Mark Shurilla (Michael Imperioli) who was a Buddy Holly impersonator who plays a mean guitar; and soon a manager, Tom D’Amato (a perfect Jim Belushi), this Diamond tribute act reaches the heights locally, even opening for Pearl Jam’s Wisconsin dates with Mike duetting with Eddie Vedder (John Beckwith) on “Forever In Blue Jeans” (yes, that really happened). They are starting to live their version of the American dream. Life is good, until it isn’t. The movie’s overall joyous tone – the love story of two people finding each other for another shot at happiness and a family coming together -changes tragically for both of them, most urgently for the ever optimistic Claire.

That Brewer never loses the delicate tone of this musical comedy/drama is a miracle itself. You will find yourself asking at more than one point, “could this have really happened?”, but ultimately Song Sung Blue is not just about a tribute to Neil Diamond, but to the resilience of the humans at the center of it all. Fortunately the film also has two ever-appealing and relatable stars knocking it out of the park – musically and dramatically. Jackman, complete with Diamond-style hair, is as good as he has ever been playing a complicated guy who finds his groove in the music of an iconic singer. It isn’t easy being such a recognizable star impersonating a man impersonating an equally recognizable star, but Jackman gives him edge and likability so we are with him all the way. His Diamond vocals are flawless. As for Hudson, she is simply sensational in her best screen role since her Oscar nominated and Golden Globe winning turn as the inimitable Penny Lane in 2000’s Almost Famous. As comfortable musically as she is with the heavy dramatics the role requires, her Claire will break your heart. Anderson and Hensley are ideally cast as the kids, and King Princess as Mike’s daughter Angelina is also fine. Imperioli also scores as that Buddy Holly guy turned key guitarist, and Mustafa Shakir gets smiles as a James Brown doppleganger, Sex Machine.

Song Sung Blue is an apt Diamond tune to title this film that doesn’t shy away from showing the curves life can throw at us, but this story of two good souls finding love and Sweet Caroline together is no mere impersonation itself. It is, in fact, about as real, emotional, and unpredictable as life can sometimes get.

Producers are Brewer, John Davis, and John Fox.

5 Things About Jordon Hudson – Hollywood Life

Bill Belichick and his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, have stayed in the spotlight since going public with their relationship in 2024—a move that followed his long-term partnership with Linda Holliday, which lasted 16 years. Recently, the two pulled out of a planned Hulu docuseries centered on Bill’s first season at UNC, citing creative differences and discomfort over the project’s personal focus, according to PEOPLE.

In October 2025, new footage surfaced showing Jordon and Bill criticizing production staff on a hot mic during a 2024 show, with Jordon calling out deficiencies in graphics and set design. Reporters and fans have also speculated about Jordon’s influence on his media projects, including before his UNC hire.

And as his coaching tenure at UNC continues to face scrutiny, the relationship remains a frequent subject of public and media discussion. Hollywood Life has rounded up five facts about Jordon and her relationship with Bill below.

Jordon Is Almost 50 Years Younger Than Bill

As of October 2025, Jordon is 24 years old, while Bill is 73, creating a 49-year age gap, which has become a prominent topic of discussion about their relationship.

On March 14, Jordon grew tired of the comments about their age difference and posted a screenshot of an exchange with an Instagram user who criticized their relationship. The user wrote, “but you do realize your relationship is insane right?” Jordon shared the message, displaying the sender’s name and handle, and tagged the person in the post. She responded, “But you do realize direct messaging a stranger on Instagram with the intent of harassing them regarding their own personal relationship is insane, right?”

At the 2025 NFL Honors, host Snoop Dogg made an age joke about the pair, saying, “I remember back when the Chiefs were bad. And I remember…” He then added, “What was it—Bill Belichick’s girlfriend wasn’t even born yet?”

In April 2025, The Athletic reported that Bill expressed concern in an email to UNC about online comments suggesting he’s a predator for dating Jordon.

While she was in high school, Jordon attended cosmetology school and graduated in 2019. The former Bridgewater State University student opened up about the 1,000-hour program in a 2019 Instagram post.

“During my senior year, I would tend to a normal high school schedule during the day, and then 4 nights a week commute to Harwich, for a 5-hour night class in cosmetology,” Jordon explained in her lengthy caption. “I would leave my house at 7:45 am, and then return home around 11 p.m. My Saturday would be playing catch-up with homework and chores. My Sunday included driving to West Bridgewater to learn from the best in cheerleading, where I was accepted into an amazing group of people who helped me grow incredibly through out the year. When I graduated high school, the grind never stopped. I continued commuting to cosmetology an hour away from home.”

Upon graduating from high school, Jordon continued working as a henna tattoo artist, a model and became a cheerleader for Bridgewater State University. However, she realized that cheerleading and cosmetology school would be a difficult balance.

“Just as I thought my schedule was as full as it could be, I was very, very wrong,” she continued. “As time for college approached, I realized that college cheerleading would conflict with my night course that I had spent hundreds of hours into. I was told I had to choose, between cheerleading and finishing my class. To give up my passion for cheerleading, or to accept the fate of a ‘beauty school drop out.’”

Nevertheless, Jordon pushed through the “many trials, tribulations, countless sacrifices and a few last minute trips to Texas,” and she graduated from the New England Hair Academy.

Jordon Was a College Cheerleader

While attending Bridgewater State University, Jordon joined their cheer squad. For years, she shared her experience to her Instagram account. In February 2024, she celebrated National Women in Sports Day by sharing photos of her best cheer memories.

“I’d like to put out how grateful I am for the sport that kept me anchored through difficult seasons of adolescence and young adulthood, engrained resilience, discipline, and punctuality into my bones,” Jordon wrote in her caption. “In the same breath, I want to express a higher sense of gratitude toward the medical professionals, holistic practitioners, coaches & peers who aided in neurological damage rehabilitation as resulted from repetitive concussions. (More on this later). Without y’all’s support, I wouldn’t have been able to ‘un-retire’ and be back on the mat to finish out the dream.”

According to TMZ, Bill and Jordon first met in 2021 while they were on a flight from Boston to Florida.

In February, Jordon shared more details about their relationship, revealing that they first met in February 2021 when Bill signed her copy of Deductive Logic, a textbook by Harvard University professor Warren Goldfarb. On Instagram, she posted on Feb. 11 that he signed the book with the date and wrote, “Thanks for giving me a course on logic! Safe travels!” He also noted the years of his Super Bowl wins.

Jordon & Bill Went Public With Their Relationship in 2024

Although they were spotted in public several times together in 2023, the couple didn’t go public with their relationship until 2024. That fall, Jordon shared photos of them together, including on Halloween.

Taylor shared, “We wanted to remember every moment leading up to the culmination of the most important and intense chapter of our lives, so we allowed filmmakers to capture this tour and all the stories woven throughout it as it wound down. And to film the final show in its entirety.”

Charlie Puth has announced his fourth studio album, Whatever’s Clever! will be out on March 6, 2026. He released a new single, “Changes,” where he reflects on both personal and professional changes. His wife Brooke Sansone makes a sweet cameo in the music video and they reveal a baby is on the way as they both place their hands on her stomach. Last month, Charlie kicked off a series of sold-out underplay residencies at Blue Note New York and continued this week in Los Angeles where he debuted his new song “Changes.”

No Doubt have announced six additional dates for their highly anticipated No Doubt Live at Sphere residency due to incredible fan demand. The newly added shows are set for May 21, 23, 24, 27, 29, and 30. The residency marks their first extended run of performances in nearly 14 years, following their historic Seven Night Stand in Los Angeles in 2012.

LANY announced their 2026 Soft World Tour and will be taking their new album, Soft, on the road for fans across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, UK, and Europe for thirty eight dates. The tour will kick off January 23 in Dubai.

Alicia Silverstone & Oliver Hudson in ‘A Merry Little Ex-Mas’ Trailer

“Lighten up, it’s Christmas! And it’s going to be fun!” Netflix has revealed the official trailer for a holiday romcom movie called A Merry Little Ex-Mas, the next holiday Hallmark Channel-esque Netflix offering this season. It’s set for a streaming debut in November, of course, to get everyone in a cheery (or not cheery) mood. Recently divorced Kate, played by Alicia Silverstone, hopes for one last perfect family Christmas before selling her house. But her holiday plans are hilariously derailed when her ex-husband unexpectedly introduces his younger & successful new girlfriend. With comedy, heart, plenty of holiday drama, A Merry Little Ex-Mas also stars Oliver Hudson as the ex, Jameela Jamil as new girl, Pierson Fodé, Wilder Hudson, Emily Hall, Timothy Innes, with Melissa Joan Hart, directed by Steve Carr (of Next Friday, Dr. Dolittle 2, Daddy Day Care, Paul Blart: Mall Cop). Netflix has been churning out more & more of these every year, to keep viewers constantly watching some sappy holiday content even if this is so super cheesy.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Steve Carr’s movie A Merry Little Ex-Mas, direct from YouTube:

Elisabeth Moss, Kate Hudson Sci-Fi Satire

by jummy84 October 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Toronto Film Festival. Republic Pictures releases “Shell” in select theaters Friday, October 3.

Some movies suffer because of bad timing. “Shell” wouldn’t be a very good movie under any circumstances, but it fares especially poorly against Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance,” a better and more outrageous film that deals in very similar subject matter. “Outrageous” is what director Max Minghella is going for here. And when it accepts its destiny as a ‘50s-style rubber-suit sci-fi monster movie, “Shell” does have camp value to it. Even then, it still doesn’t commit to the bit hard enough to make it successful.

Monster: The Ed Gein Story stars Charlie Hunnam as the actor playing Ed Gein, shown here smiling in the dark with his hand above his face

There are some funny moments in “Shell” — both intentional and unintentional — and some eye-catching images. The first living creature to appear on screen is a fluffy lap dog smeared with blood, which combines the two; it trots down a dark hallway in an ‘80s-style mansion, its little legs moving as fast as they can. The camera follows the dog into a retro tiled bathroom, where Elizabeth Berkley is sitting in a shell-pink bathtub wearing a matching silk robe cutting grotesque black bumps off of her leg. She’s freaking out. The tub is slippery with blood. She passes out and drops the knife, and the dog starts licking it clean.

It’s a promising cold open, one that leads into an uneasy blend of attempted pathos and tired entertainment-industry satire as Samantha (Elisabeth Moss) goes out for what she thinks is a meeting with the director of one of the downbeat indie movies Moss sometimes stars in in real life. It turns out to be an open audition, and Samantha loses the role — a divorced single mother of two — to “it” girl Chloe Benson (Kaia Gerber). Chloe is barely old enough to drink, let alone have two kids, but she’s hot and popular on social media so there you go. The experience leads Samantha’s reps (one of whom is played by Ziwe, perfectly cast) to suggest, their voices thick with smarmy faux-concern, that she go rest at the Shell clinic for a while.

CEO Zoe Shannon (Kate Hudson) is the face of Shell, a company whose services blend elements of “Death Becomes Her” and “The Lobster.” In a spa-like atmosphere, people like Samantha can stave off their fear of irrelevance by undergoing an outpatient procedure where their DNA is fused with the DNA of a lobster, or something, resulting in a younger, stronger, taller version of themselves with clear skin and bright eyes. A lot is explained, but none of it sticks. The only things that land are the cutting jokes, which, again, are nothing new — did you know Los Angeles is a shallow and insincere place? — but get some chuckles in the moment.

The satire here is clumsy, gesturing at similar points already made in better movies. There’s a rule in comedy that if you have to explain a joke, it’s not a very good joke, and a similar sort of ambiguity is at play here. It’s not always clear if, say, a montage set to “Walkin’ on Sunshine” after her Shell treatment improves Samantha’s life is a tongue-in-cheek parody of cheesy ‘80s movies, or if it’s just plain cheesy itself. This all ties into the camp factor, which could also be used to explain away hacky details like Samantha’s cat as a stand-in for her spinsterhood. Hypothetically.

“Shell” also fancies itself body horror, but again it doesn’t commit hard enough to truly excel in that area. Samantha barfs up some black bile, and Zoe’s sycophants eat her skin at a dinner party in a bit that briefly frames her as a Christ figure but doesn’t go anywhere. Then there are the bumps that pop up when the procedure “goes wrong,” which are referred to in the film as “scales” but are more like the kind of lumpy mole that would prompt a visit to the dermatologist. A whole rash of them is pretty gross, but not as gross as it needs to be. Where’s the goop?

Mysterious pink liquids are injected into willing subjects from unlabeled vials at the Shell clinic, again shades of “The Substance.” Even the surface aesthetics of the films are similar: Both have an eye for ‘80s-inspired fashions and architecture, which manifests here in the form of silver lamé and curved lines. The heightened reality of this film is not as well constructed, however, and with much less intentionality: The self-driving cars that appear in the background throughout the film, for example, serve no particular purpose except to shore up its sci-fi credentials.

Everyone in “Shell” lives in this reality except for schlumpy everywoman Moss, who feels like she’s about a half-step off from everyone else. That’s not a failure on the part of the actor, who has proven herself more than capable many times over. It is indicative of the overall clumsiness of the project, whose lack of consistency is present even in little details like that fact that some of the magazines in the film are real (Samantha is profiled in “Vanity Fair”) and others are not (ditto for Zoe in “Persons”).

Hudson, meanwhile, does understand the tone Minghella is aiming for here, or is perhaps setting it herself. Her motivations for striking up a friendship with Samantha are inscrutable and predatory, and she plays the chilly villainess with relish as she struts around in fabulous gowns and purrs out pseudo-scientific bullshit. (There’s also the potential for a lesbian subtext to her relationship with Moss, but this is sadly underdeveloped.) Her perfection is supposed to make her hateable, and Moss’ imperfection is similarly meant to frame her as relatable. But pulling off that dynamic in a movie that also has human-sized crustaceans in it is a project for a more skilled filmmaker than this one.

Grade: C
