French biochemist reveals how movement helps balance glucose spikes after meals, shares 4 tips: ‘Household chores like…’

Sitting down and relaxing immediately after meals can spike glucose levels. Instead, Jesse Inchauspé recommends 4 daily activities to help balance spikes.

Glucose-rich meals can cause sharp spikes in blood sugar, leaving the body struggling to bring levels back to balance. While many people instinctively sit down or relax after eating, this habit can actually worsen the problem. Simple physical movement – even light daily chores – can make a significant difference in curbing these spikes and supporting healthier glucose control.

Jessie Inchauspé, a French biochemist, NYT bestselling author, and health activist popularly known as the Glucose Goddess on social media, highlights why moving after glucose-rich meals is key to balancing out blood sugar spikes. In an Instagram video posted on October 2, she explains how physical activity impacts blood glucose levels, recommending simple movements – even everyday household chores – that can help lower both glucose and insulin levels.

Why moving helps balance glucose spikes

According to Jesse, your muscles contract due to movement, and this helps them absorb glucose faster. She explains, “When your muscles contract, for example, if you’re walking, you’re squatting, you’re cleaning your apartment, after you eat something high in glucose, your muscles will uptake the glucose from that meal without needing insulin.” She stresses that it is important to keep your insulin levels low in order to prevent spikes. “So, just 10 minutes of movement after a meal can help you reduce your glucose spike of the meal without increasing your insulin levels, which is two birds, one stone,” Jesse adds.

Recommended movements

Glucose and insulin spikes can be avoided by performing simple movements, and even daily household chores can help. Besides chores, activities like walking and performing air squats are effective in lowering glucose spikes. Jesse recommends the following:

  • Walking for 10 minutes.
  • Calf raises (also known as soleus push-ups).
  • Household chores like vacuuming, folding laundry, washing dishes, cleaning the bathroom.
  • Air squats.

A Week In Victoria, BC On A $150,000 Household Income

Was there an expectation for you to attend higher education? Did you participate in any form of higher education? If yes, how did you pay for it?
Yes, my parents both come from cultures where education is important and my dad worked in academia. However, I took an alternative route and went to a private fashion and beauty college rather than a regular college or university. I took out a student loan to pay for it, which I paid off in 2020.

Growing up, what kind of conversations did you have about money? Did your parent(s) educate you about finances?
I was told when we were doing ok financially, and when we needed to focus on saving. Apart from that, my parents did not really educate me about finances.

What was your first job and why did you get it?
I worked at a rock climbing gym in high school. I wanted to have my own spending money, and I also got to climb for free on the days I worked.

Did you worry about money growing up?
Not too much. My mom was a hard worker and she always made sure we were comfortable, but she was transparent about not being able to afford certain things. Still, I never felt that we were seriously struggling.

Do you worry about money now?
Somewhat. Things have gotten a lot easier since J. started working again (and got a six figure job to boot), but I also know that life is unpredictable and anything can happen. Even though our household income has essentially tripled since he started working again, I haven’t changed my spending habits very much because I know that our situation could change again.

At what age did you become financially responsible for yourself and do you have a financial safety net?
I moved out of my mom’s place when I was 20. My husband and I have about $50,000 in savings, which we’d like to invest more in the future.

Do you or have you ever received passive or inherited income? If yes, please explain.
No.

AIIMS gastroenterologist shares 3 everyday household items to throw away immediately: Scented candles to non-stick pans

Even everyday kitchen items can hide health risks. AIIMS gastroenterologist highlights 3 common household products that should be discarded immediately.

Even in clean, well-kept homes, hidden health hazards can lurk in everyday items. Some seemingly harmless products may irritate your gut or affect overall wellness. Dr Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford Universities, shares in his September 12 Instagram post 3 toxic household items to throw away immediately. (Also read: AIIMS gastroenterologist warns ‘don’t spend more than 10 minutes on toilet’; shares 8 simple tips for healthy gut )

1. Regular scented candles

“Many of these contain phthalates, which can disrupt hormones, and paraffin wax, which can release soot and VOCs when burned,” says Dr Saurabh. He adds, “These chemicals can aggravate allergies, respiratory issues, and even impact gut health over time.” Quoting some better options, he suggests, “unscented soy, coconut, or beeswax candles, which are cleaner-burning and safer for daily use.”

2. Plastic cutting boards

“Knife marks can shed tiny plastic particles into your food. The risk builds up over years of use,” says Dr Sethi. He explains that these microplastics can accumulate in the body and potentially affect long-term health. Better options, he adds, are well-maintained wood or bamboo boards. “Glass is hygienic but dulls knives quickly, so it’s not always practical,” he notes.

3. Scratched or chipped non-stick pans

“Older pans often use PFOA, which is linked to reproductive and hormonal issues. Modern non-stick pans are PFOA-free but scratches can still release microscopic coating particles plus any additives trapped inside,” says Dr Sethi. He recommends safer alternatives, sharing, “Stainless steel, cast iron, or pure ceramic cookware are much better options for everyday cooking and long-term health.”
