CNN Live News Stream Being Pulled From HBO Max

by jummy84 October 3, 2025
written by jummy84

CNN Max, the cable news network’s live news stream, will no longer be available on HBO Max starting on Nov. 17.

CNN is about the launch is own streaming channel this fall, although an exact launch dates has not yet been announced.

HBO Max will continue to stream CNN Originals like Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy and The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper.

Alex MacCallum, executive vice president of digital products and services for CNN, said in a statement, “CNN has benefitted tremendously from its two years of offering a live 24/7 feed of news to HBO Max customers. We learned from HBO Max’s large base of subscribers what people want and enjoy the most from CNN, and with the launch of our own new streaming subscription offering coming later this fall, we look forward to building off that and growing our audience with this unique, new offering.”

CNN launched the livestream in the fall of 2023, after the short life of another streaming venture, CNN+.

The new subscription streaming offering will feature a selection of live channels and on-demand programming, designed to put all of the network’s video offerings in one place. Warner Bros. Discovery, meanwhile, changed the name of Max back to HBO Max earlier this year, reflecting a reversion to a narrower selection of content offerings.

Witness Protection Origin Story Series In The Works At HBO

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

EXCLUSIVE: Pete Earley and Gerald Shur’s nonfiction book WitSec: Inside the Federal Witness Protection Program is being developed for TV at HBO, from Peter Chernin’s Chernin Entertainment. Justin Piasecki (Relay) and David Kob (Foundation) will serve as writers on the project.

TheWitsec series follows a DOJ lawyer and a hardened mob hitman, both fed up with the corrupt institutions around them, who form a precarious alliance to convict criminal titans and save lives in the rogue origins of the Witness Protection Program.

Witsec will be executive produced by Alex Jackson of Chernin Entertainment, Earley and Miriam Shur.

Piasecki is currently writing his as-yet-untitled original thriller feature for Amazon MGM Studios. He also has his feature Stakehorse at Amazon, which has Justin Lin attached to direct and Hidden Pictures attached to produce. His feature Relay was released this fall by Bleecker Street and is directed by David Mackenzie and stars Lily James, Riz Ahmed and Sam Worthington. Piasecki is repped by Paradigm, Range and Hansen Jacobson Teller Hoberman.

Kob recently was elevated from executive producer to co-showrunner on Foundation for Apple TV+ and Skydance, after being with the show since Season 1. The sci-fi series recently was renewed for a fourth season. He is repped by Paradigm and Signature Management.

Founded three years ago, Chernin Entertainment is a global content studio whose projects span scripted, unscripted and documentary content. Its labels include Chernin Entertainment (film, TV and indie), North Road Television, Words + Pictures and Kinetic Content, among others.

Recent projects include the action-comedy Back in Action and Fear Street: Prom Queen, both of which debuted at No. 1 on Netflix’s most-watched list. Its upcoming film slate includes Apex and sci-fi 11817 — both for Netflix — as well as Altar with Kyle MacLachlan and January Jones. On the TV front, they released the Jason Momoa-led Chief of War and Starz’s P-Valley, with The Backrooms (fka Man on Fire) with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve coming soon to Netflix. Earlier this year, Chernin Entertainment signed a multi-year first-look film deal with Apple TV+.

Industry season 4 release window for US confirmed by HBO

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Bloys also said that he would “love to see that show and those performers break through” when speaking about Industry, reflecting on the fact it has yet to get major awards recognition in the US.

In the UK, it has been more successful, with star Marisa Abela winning a Leading Actress BAFTA for her role as Yasmin.

The UK release date for the season has yet to be confirmed, but based on the schedules for previous runs we’d imagine all of the episodes will arrive at once after they have finished airing in the US. This means they are likely to be added to BBC iPlayer some time in March or April next year.

Industry season 4 is set to be a very different season. The end of season 3 which saw Pierpoint’s London trading floor close, and the central characters scattered.

Harper was last seen starting a fund which she planned to run from New York, Eric was jobless, Yasmin was set to marry Sir Henry Muck and Rishi was left in a very perilous situation indeed.

The new run will feature a host of new characters, played by the likes of Max Minghella, Kiernan Shipka, Jack Farthing, Toheeb Jimoh, Amy James-Kelly, Kal Penn, Charlie Heaton and Claire Forlani.

Meanwhile, original star Harry Lawtey won’t be returning due to scheduling conflicts. His character Robert Spearing started a new role at a psilocybin start-up at the end of season 3, but we won’t be following his journey in that new position in season 4.

Beyond that, not much is known about the new episodes.

Earlier this year, Kenny star Conor MacNeill was asked whether his character would be returning to which he said: “Kenny’s gone from Pierpoint – at the end of season 3, Pierpoint is gone itself. I don’t know is the God’s honest truth. It felt very explosive.”

Industry seasons 1-3 are on BBC iPlayer in the UK. The drama airs on HBO in the US.

Warner Bros. Discovery is accelerating its international streaming push with HBO Max‘s expansion into 14 additional Asia Pacific territories set for Oct. 15.

The rollout will bring the premium streamer to Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Macau, Mongolia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, among other territories, marking another significant milestone in the platform’s aggressive global expansion strategy.

The launch timing aligns strategically with HBO’s upcoming original series “IT: Welcome to Derry,” which premieres Oct. 27. The Stephen King-inspired drama features an ensemble cast led by Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, Rudy Mancuso, and Bill Skarsgård. Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs developed the series, which expands the horror universe Muschietti established in his “IT” film duology.

“Following successful launches in Australia and Europe earlier this year, the global expansion of HBO Max continues to bring unparalleled entertainment to more fans across the world,” said JB Perrette, CEO and president of global streaming and games at Warner Bros. Discovery. “By the end of the year, HBO Max will be available in more than 100 markets, with more to come in 2026, including major launches in Germany, Italy and the U.K.”

The service will showcase Warner Bros. Discovery’s portfolio spanning HBO’s prestige programming, blockbuster franchises like “Harry Potter” and DC Universe properties, plus content from Cartoon Network and various lifestyle networks including Discovery, TLC, Food Network, ID and HGTV.

New subscribers will access recent theatrical releases including “Superman,” “Sinners” and “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” alongside HBO’s flagship series “House of the Dragon,” “The Last of Us,” “The Penguin,” and “The Pitt.”

The platform will also feature upcoming originals “The Paper” and “MobLand,” reality programming like “Gold Rush,” “Deadliest Catch,” and “90 Day Fiancé,” plus animated favorites spanning “Adventure Time,” “We Bare Bears,” “Tom and Jerry,” “Looney Tunes,” and “The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball.”

Warwick Davis Returns to ‘Harry Potter’ in New HBO TV Series

by jummy84 September 2, 2025
written by jummy84

HBO‘s upcoming Harry Potter TV series has cast a familiar face to play Hogwarts Professor Filius Flitwick.

Warwick Davis, who played Flitwick in the original Harry Potter film series, will reprise the role for the TV series, which will debut on HBO and HBO Max in 2027.

Davis is the only actor (so far) to play the same role on the TV reboot as in the original films. His return to the franchise was announced as part of the annual Back to Hogwarts event, which is held each Sept. 1 and celebrates the franchise.

In addition to Davis, HBO also announced castings for seven other roles in the upcoming series:

  • Hogwarts students: Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas, Finn Stephens as Vincent Crabbe and William Nash as Gregory Goyle
  • Hogwarts staff: Sirine Saba as Professor Pomona Sprout, Richard Durden as Professor Cuthbert Binns, and Bríd Brennan as Madam Poppy Pomfrey
  • Gringotts: Leigh Gill as Griphook

HBO has been active in casting the show over the summer, starting with the new actors playing Harry, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, with John Lithgow playing Dumbledore, Janet McTeer playing Professor Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu playing Professor Severus Snape and Nick Frost playing Hagrid, among other roles.

You can see the full cast list so far here.

The new Harry Potter series is in production now and will take a more expansive approach to author J.K. Rowling’s original book series, delving into storylines that weren’t able to be included in the films. While the cast is new, the inclusion of Davis as the Hogwarts charms professor provides some connective tissue between the original film franchise and the upcoming series.

Davis also portrayed Griphook in the film franchise but is not returning for the role in the TV series. The actor has also appeared in the Star Wars and Leprechaun franchises as well as the title character in Willow.

The series is being written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner. Mark Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes of the series for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The series is executive produced by Rowling, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.

Warwick Davis to reprise one of his ‘Harry Potter’ roles in HBO reboot series

by jummy84 September 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Warwick Davis has been confirmed as part of the cast for the Harry Potter television series, reprising one of the same roles he had in the films.

Davis has been revealed as the first actor from the original film franchise – based on the J.K. Rowling book series – to be taking part in the forthcoming series made for HBO.

In the show, which is expected to arrive on screens in 2027, Davis will once again be taking on the role of Professor Filius Flitwick. In the films, he also played the character Griphook – a goblin employed at the Gringotts Wizarding Bank – however, this role in the series will be played by Leigh Gill.

The news was announced as part of the Back To Hogwarts celebration today (September 1), and also saw other new members of the cast revealed for the first time.

These, as shared by Deadline, included the role of Dean Thomas, a student at Hogwarts who was part of the Gryffindor House, and those of Slytherin students Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle. Thomas will be played by Elijah Oshin, and Crabbe and Goyle will be played by Finn Stephens and William Nash, respectively.

Also confirmed is Sirine Saba as Professor Pomona Sprout (played by Miriam Margolyes in the films), Richard Durden as Professor Cuthbert Binns, and Bríd Brennan as Madam Poppy Pomfrey. Binns is the ghost of a teacher who continues to teach at Hogwarts, and featured in the J.K. Rowling books but not in the film series. Pomfrey is a nurse who was played by Gemma Jones in the movies.

Earlier this year, other members of the cast were revealed, and it was reported that over 32,000 children auditioned for the three lead roles – Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley.

In May, it was confirmed that Dominic McLaughlin would be playing Harry, Arabella Stanton will portray Hermione, and Alastair Stout will take on the role of Ron.

Before then, it was reported that John Lithgow would play the role of Albus Dumbledore. HBO later confirmed the casting, and also announced Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Others in the cast include Luke Thallon as Professor Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as caretaker Argus Filch, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Harry’s aunt and uncle Petunia and Vernon Dursley depicted by Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby, Draco Malfoy being played by Lox Pratt, and his father, Lucius, brought to life by Johnny Flynn. Check out the full cast so far here.

Since the series was announced, an actor from the original films, Jason Isaacs, has called out “racist” critics of Paapa Essiedu’s casting as Severus Snape in the show, and Chris Columbus, who directed the first two films, has criticised the look of the series, questioning why it needs to be made.

Netflix, HBO Max and More

There’s no denying the fact that true-crime stories are everywhere — in podcasts, TV series, or movies — and the craze doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. The Hollywood Reporter compiled a list of some of the most recent true-crime series and films available to stream.

These hit shows and movies have garnered more than 60 Emmy nominations over the last few years, with 11 coming this year for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

A 2022 YouGov poll showed that half of Americans enjoy true-crime content, with one in three saying they consume it at least once a week and one in four admitting that they watch it multiple times per week. The poll also showed that true-crime series and movies tend to make people more empathetic toward victims and safety-conscious, as well as better-versed in how the criminal justice system works.

With interest in true crime seemingly at an all-time high, as viewers seek content that transports them into real-life stories, it’s no surprise there are constantly more docuseries premiering across several streaming platforms.

So, what is it about the true crime genre that draws people in so much? According to Jean Kim, M.D., audiences may be entranced by the content because they find comfort in the reassuring narrative formula, its reinforcing sense of moral clarity and how it reminds them of their luck at times.

Below, find a list of 37 true-crime (or true-crime adjacent) TV shows and movies that can be watched on Max, Netflix, Hulu and more. (This story first published in 2024 and has been updated to include more items.)

R. Scott Gemmill on HBO Max’s Hit Medical Drama ‘The Pitt’

The Pitt, which is nominated for 13 Emmys, has eerie parallels to the real world. Not only did its episode on measles debut the week of an outbreak in the U.S., but the HBO Max drama also grappled with a hospital’s lack of resources amid a larger culture of health care haves and have-nots, not unlike President Trump’s recent “Big Beautiful Bill” proposal that likely will lead to millions of people losing their Medicaid benefits.

Dr. Robby to the rescue? The Pitt’s creator and showrunner R. Scott Gemmill says only Noah Wyle could embrace the titular role in this timeless series.

The show had an interesting trajectory in the way it got started. I know you said you never wanted to do a medical drama again after ER.

Yes correct. I didn’t want to do one. We had done what was I thought was considered the best version, and we had done so many stories. So it was like, what would you do differently? And I would always want to go back to the ER, because it’s the most dynamic place in medicine for me. I had a way to do it as a reboot for ER, and then when that didn’t work, we just walked away. We were back to square one. And then when HBO Max said they still wanted to do a medical show, then it was sort of a clean slate, other than it was going to be me, John Wells and Noah Wyle and my friend Joe. I wanted Joe Sachs to work on the show with me, but it was like, what does a new show look like in this era and for streaming? It was great because we got to reinvent what we’d done before, and build on what we knew worked, and try things that we were totally untested by us.

How did you settle on the idea of The Pitt? I know Noah was getting an influx of messages from health care workers during COVID about how hard it was in the sector.

That was happening to Noah, but I was unaware. After COVID, I was going to develop [an idea] with another writer friend. We’d worked on shows together, including ER, and were developing and weren’t having a lot of luck. Everybody was struggling. He said, “Why wouldn’t John [Wells, executive producer on ER and The Pitt] reboot ER?” And I gave him this list of why we would never do it again. And then I said, “If there was ever a way, it would have to be very different, but same.” And I came up with a way that involved Noah. I only was going to do it if it was Noah. I knew I would have access to the original footage of ER so I could do scenes with Noah as Dr. John Carter and flash back to him as John Carter as a med student. And never in the history of television has anyone had access to footage of an actor playing the same role 30 years earlier. It never got off the ground, unfortunately. So then HBO said, “We want a medical show. What can we do?” Noah was already involved. John was already involved. And that’s where we started.

And ultimately, you decided to do a series shot in real time.

With Noah playing a doctor and also playing, because we were post COVID, a doctor that I knew from the get go was probably going to be suffering from PTSD… that, between the Robbie character and the 12 hour shift, that was sort of the how it really all started.

The show has been lauded for its realistic portrayal of hospital care and the many details that make it authentic. For example, there’s no music.

That was a big idea to sell. I did at least two episodes of ER without any music, and I knew if it was written in a specific way, you can get by without the music. That was a bit of a challenge. Not everyone was as enthusiastic about the idea, and we even tried putting music in a couple of scenes, and it just doesn’t work. … If you’ve ever been in an ER, it’s noisy, it’s horrible. And the only way to really capture that was to not have any music, so you’re not telling anyone what to feel.

What type of research goes into writing a show like this?

Research is a huge part of our show. For the mass casualty episode, we went through all the interviews that happened in Las Vegas at the mass shooting there, talked to experts who are responsible for prepping for the mass casualty situations. We even came up with some new things: The slap bands was something that we came up with for identifying patients in triage, to the point where we had people asking where they could get those.

Which scene was the most challenging for you to write?

I think Robbie’s breakdown was a little difficult. I worked with Noah a lot with that, because it’s very easy for me to write, “Robbie breaks down.” I’m very, very sympathetic about acting, and I really encourage even my writers to spend some time acting so that they understand the dynamics of the scene. Every character has some sort of intention for a scene, and once you learn that, I think it makes you a better writer. So that’s really a collaborative process.

It is eerie that some storylines are playing out the way they are in real life.

That happens more often than you realize. Our purpose is to predict a little bit. The mass casualty, that happens constantly; the measles outbreak was inevitable. The problems that Medicare and the Medicaid cuts are going to cause are inevitable, because once people can’t afford insurance, where do they go for medical care? They go to the free clinics, or they go to the ER, and they get busier and busier. We’re tapping into the experts all the time to get a leg up on, “What are the concerns?” Especially with medicine, you don’t want to be playing catch-up. Once it’s out in the open, it’s already a problem. And that’s what makes the ER so fundamentally great for storytelling is that everything shows up in the ER, and it usually shows up there before it shows up everywhere else. It’s like the canary in the coal mine. The ER has its pulse on what’s going on with society.

What can we expect for S2?

Noah’s gonna write two epidodes, and I think he’s gonna direct at least one. He’s directing episode six. He wrote episode three. And I forget what other episode he’s gonna write. I guess he’s bored. We’ll see some new faces, which is nice. We’ll see some new med students and some new doctor faces, we’ll see some of the people from before, some returns. and hopefully we’ll see some revelations about some of our other characters.
