KISS Guitarist Ace Frehley Dies At 74

by jummy84 October 17, 2025
written by jummy84

KISS co-founder and guitarist Paul “Ace” Frehley died today (Oct. 16) from head injuries suffered during a recent fall in his recording studio. He was 74.

“We are completely devastated and heartbroken,” his family said. “In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth. We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others. The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension. Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever!”

Frehley was born on April 27, 1951, in the Bronx section of New York and taught himself how to play guitar as a teenager while listening to Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin records. “Half of my friends are dead now or OD’d,” Frehley told SPIN in 1996. “My best friend hung himself at Rikers Island. It was a rocky road — but music got me away from those people.”

He joined the band that would become the face-painted, fire-breathing, blood-spitting KISS in late 1972 after answering an audition ad in the Village Voice. It wasn’t long before he rose to fame and fortune alongside vocalist/guitarist Paul Stanley, vocalist/bassist Gene Simmons and drummer Peter Criss, with KISS reigning as one of the most popular rock groups of the decade.

“I was in love with Zeppelin from the very first note I heard,” Frehley recalled to SPIN last year. “Jimmy Page is one of my favorite guitar players. I was determined to figure out all his solos. In those days, I had to slow the record down because some of his guitar playing was so fast. I couldn’t figure out the notes. That was a big pain in the ass back then because when you slow the record down, it changes the pitch. Then, I [had] to retune my guitar.”

In KISS, Frehley painted stars over his eyes and dubbed himself The Spaceman, owing to his childhood love for science fiction. He also wore enormous platform boots that often caused him to fall down — so much so that he would play solos while on his knees. Among the songs he either wrote or co-wrote for KISS are “Cold Gin,” “Parasite,” “Rocket Ride” and “Shock Me,” which was inspired by a near-electrocution onstage in Florida in 1976.

Criss was fired from KISS in 1980 and Frehley, who was always the moodiest, most down-to-earth person in the band and never as comfortable in the spotlight as Stanley and Simmons, left in early 1982 to pursue a solo career. He enjoyed a decent hit with his 1987 debut as Frehley’s Comet, but struggled with addiction and to compete with the nascent grunge movement of the early ’90s.

“There were some hard feelings when I left,” he told SPIN in 1996. “I had some substance-abuse problems at that point in my life. I wasn’t thinking straight. I was getting very suicidal, frustrated, the syndrome of too much too soon. The success of my solo album… that kind of planted the seed: ‘Hey, maybe I can do it on my own.’”

A lifeline came in 1996, when KISS’ original quartet reunited in makeup for what at the time was one of the most anticipated tours of all time. He exited KISS permanently in 2002 and only performed with the group once since, in 2018, although he was inducted with Stanley, Simmons and Criss into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.

This is a developing story.

Rush Honor Kiss’ Guitarist Ace Frehley: ‘An Undeniable Character’

by jummy84 October 17, 2025
written by jummy84

The members of Rush are looking back on their time touring as an opener for Kiss in the Seventies. Following Ace Frehley‘s death on Thursday, Oct. 16, Rush shared a tribute to the Kiss guitarist, calling him an “undeniable character.”

“Absolutely stunned and saddened by the news Ace Frehley has tragically passed away,” the band wrote on Instagram. “Back in 1974, as the opening act for KISS, Alex, Neil and myself spent many a night hanging out together in his hotel room after shows, doing whatever nonsense we could think of, just to make him break out his inimitable and infectious laugh.”

The band added, “He was an undeniable character and an authentic rock star. RIP Ace .. thanks for welcoming us newbies into the rock and roll world.”

Rush‘s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson previously shared stories from their tour with Kiss (and especially Frehley) in a documentary, Time Stand Still, back in 2016.  While on the road, Lifeson used to dress as “The Bag” — placing a paper bag over his head and putting his hands through his pants to entertain his bandmates and Frehley.

“Gene was very, very upset with the Bag,” Lifeson recalled in the documentary. “And that made Ace even happier.”

Trending Stories

“Gene was straight,” Lee added at the time. “He wasn’t high like we were. He had a different sense of reality when he came into Ace’s room. We were drinking and smoking and generally being idiots.”

Frehley died in Morristown, New Jersey, at age 74. Lori Lousararian, Frehley’s rep, attributed his death to a “recent fall at his home,” though a specific cause of death was not immediately available. “We are completely devastated and heartbroken,” Frehley’s family said in a statement. “In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth.”

Paul Daniel “Ace” Frehley, the lead guitarist and co-founder of the rock group KISS, died on October 16, 2025, his family confirmed. Frehley was 74. With no known health issues in recent years, fans of the “Rock and Roll All Nite” artist are wondering what his cause of death could have been.

Hours after TMZ reported that Freshley was on life support, his family announced that he died in a statement obtained by Variety. It read, “We are completely devastated and heartbroken. In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth. We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others. The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension. Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever!”

Below, learn what happened to Frehley and what we know about his untimely death.

Did Ace Frehley Have Any Health Issues?

Frehley never publicly announced any major health issues. However, he reportedly sustained a brain bleed in September 2025 and had to cancel his upcoming tour dates. He was hospitalized and placed on life support, per TMZ.

Ace Frehley’s Cause of Death

Unfortunately, Frehley’s brain bleed caused a decline in health during his last few weeks, and he died as a result. TMZ reported that he had been placed on life support for “some time,” and his family had contemplated taking him off life support.

What Happened to Ace Frehley? How He Died

Frehley fell in his studio in September 2025, a statement shared to his Instagram account revealed. At the time, the fall was considered “minor.”

“Ace had a minor fall in his studio, resulting in a trip to the hospital,” the September 25 Instagram caption read. “He is fine, but against his wishes, his doctor insists that he refrain from travel at this time. As a result, he is forced to cancel his performance at the Antelope Valley Fair in Lancaster, California on Friday, September 26th. Please go to the fair to support his friends in Quiet Riot and Vixen, and Ace looks forward to continuing on his tour and finishing work on his next album, ‘Origins Vol. 4.’”

It turned out that Frehley’s fall was actually more serious. On October 6, a separate statement was released on his Instagram page, which read, “Due to some ongoing medical issues, Ace has made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of his 2025 dates.”

Frehley died about 10 days later.

Back in 2022, Turnstile announced they were parting ways with guitarist Brady Ebert after 12 years together.

The outfit shared the news in an Instagram story, writing: “We are deeply grateful for our time together. Our love for him continues and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”

Ebert was one of the group’s founding members, alongside vocalist Brendan Yates. They started the band in 2010, joined by bassist and vocalist Franz Lyons, drummer Daniel Fang and guitarist Sean Cullen (who left in 2015 and was replaced by Pat McCrory). He played on three of the band’s studio albums — 2016’s ‘Nonstop Feeling’, 2018’s ‘Time & Space’ and 2021’s ‘Glow On’.

Turnstile’s US tour kicked off on September 15 in Nashville, where they brought out Paramore’s Hayley Williams for a duet of ‘Seein’ Stars’. They will play around the country for the rest of the autumn, with support to come from SPEED, Jane Remover, Mannequin Pussy, Blood Orange, and Amyl & The Sniffers. See more information about the tour here and find any remaining tickets here.

The band’s latest album is ‘Never Enough’, which received a glowing five-star review from NME, and was also named as one of our best albums of 2025 so far.

Speaking to NME in June, drummer Daniel Fang says the success of 2021’s ‘Glow On’ didn’t create any pressure when making its follow-up. “I don’t know how anyone would have time or the bandwidth to manage outside expectations,” he said. “I don’t think any of us can even fathom that, because there’s an infinite well within everyone [in the band]… I don’t understand how anyone could be guided by that when there’s so much else to work off of.”

They played an acclaimed, moshpit-heavy Glastonbury 2025 set, and will embark on a UK and European tour, which kicks off in Dublin on October 31. See the full list of dates here and find tickets here.

In a five-star review of the Glastonbury set, NME wrote: “This set is what Turnstile are all about – there’s no needless chatter and no projections behind them illustrating what their songs are meant to symbolise. Instead, it simply boils down to the sheer intensity and precision with which they deliver each of their 15 tracks, and the unwavering loyalty they get in return. Get ready for Turnstile to dominate this summer – and beyond.”

Meanwhile, last week, an investigation was launched after a sheriff’s deputy appeared to pepper spray a Turnstile fan in Richmond.

Joining the band is James Richardson, a multi-instrumentalist best known for his work on tour and in the studio with MGMT. A representative for Real Estate confirmed that Richardson is a new full-time member of the band.

“You might notice a new and friendly face on stage with us this fall,” Real Estate shared on Instagram. “Please join us in welcoming @jomdry to the Real Estate Family! This dude rocks !!! … and he’s played on some of your favorite records of all time, I’m sure of it.”

Richardson has been a fixture in MGMT since Congratulations, and the band’s Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser have spoken fondly of him in interviews with Pitchfork. Beyond his work with MGMT, Richardson has played on Cameron Winter’s Heavy Metal, Snail Mail’s Lush, Cola Boyy’s Prosthetic Boombox, and more.

Cradle Of Filth fire guitarist a day after his wife quits band

Cradle Of Filth fire guitarist a day after his wife quits band

by jummy84 August 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Cradle Of Filth have announced the firing of guitarist Marek “Ashok” Šmerda – find out more below.

Last night, Cradle Of Filth and frontman Dani Filth took to social media to announce that they have fired Šmerda with immediate effect. The post came hours after Šmerda shared his own posts announcing that he would be leaving Cradle Of Filth at the end of their current tour.

His wife, Zoe Marie Federoff who was also in the band as keyboardist, also left the band mid-tour a day before Šmerda’s announcement. The couple cited “certain events” within the band as their reasons for wanting to leave.

Šmerda’s post revealed that the couple “do not feel like Cradle can provide for our future, and in fact hinders it. Among other reasons it is a lot of work for relatively low pay, the stress is quite high, and we haven’t felt for a while like this band actually prioritizing/caring about members. It has been years of unprofessional behavior from people above us that led to our decision.”

In response, Cradle Of Filth and Dani Filth have fired Šmerda with immediate effect. Filth wrote, addressing Šmerda’s and Federoof’s exits: “Thank you for your understanding in this horrible matter, we are all in a state of shock over proceedings and will share our side to these unfortunate events in due course. Please, respect our decision to part with Ashok now rather than at the end of the tour and avoid speculation as more clarity on the situation will be provided.”

“The rest of the band are cool, even if taken aback, and accusations toward management, who work very closely with me and the band are completely unjust and unfounded. Patience is a virtue and the truth will always come out.”

The band also confirmed that they will be proceeding with the rest of their tour despite being short of one guitarist and “all attempts to illegally defame and derail the band”.

It is currently unclear if Dani and Cradle Of Filth are seeking legal action against the couple for their “illegal” attempts at “defamation”.

Additionally, Šmerda has asked that his contributions to the band’s future releases, including the long-gestating collaboration with Ed Sheeran, be scrapped: “I have also asked all compositions of mine removed from upcoming releases including Ed Sheeran collab. This song feels like foolish clown antics for me at this point anyways- first it was charity single for kids, then for profit single, then on next album, and now who knows and I just do not want to be involved anymore, no disrespect to Ed Sheeran.”

The Ed Sheeran collaboration has been in the works for several years, dating all the way back to 2021. Work on the track was progressing in 2022 according to Filth, with that then being halted due to Sheeran becoming a father. Filth was then pictured at the pub with Sheeran and producer Scott Atkins in late 2022, with a tentative release date of summer 2023 then set.

Earlier this year, Dani Filth continued to talk up the collaboration, saying the track was “done and dusted”, but would later leave it off the band’s latest record.

Federoff joined Cradle of Filth in 2022, and was a part of the line-up when they shared their latest album ‘The Screaming Of The Valkyries’ in March 2025. Šmerda has been in the group for over a decade. They announced their engagement to celebrate New Year’s Day 2024, and officially tied the knot earlier this year – with Dani Filth in attendance.

Gavin Rossdale is forever “grateful” to late Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds for talking him out of taking “fatally dangerous” Xanax again.

Gavin Rossdale is ‘grateful’ to Brent Hinds for talking him out of taking Xanax again

The Bush frontman has spoken candidly in the past about how he was addicted to the anxiety medication for years and that a conversation with the heavy metal star – who tragically died in a motorcycle crash, aged 51, on August 22 – stopped him from relapsing.

Reacting to the sad news of his passing, Gavin penned on Instagram alongside a picture of the pair: “We lost Brent .this is just terrible and useless . What a musician . And he was directly responsible for stopping me on a self sabotage back to the fatally dangerous world of Xanax when our paths crossed that i had already escaped . he spoke about its actual deadly effects.the slowing down of the body .the barely breathing . I will always be grateful for that advice . This life can be ended in a literal moment . I should have taken guitar lessons from Brent (sic).”

The 59-year-old rocker spent four years relying on Xanax to sleep, but was eventually able to ween himself off the drug.

Appearing on Steve-O’s podcast, Steve-O’s Wild Ride!, in 2023, Gavin recounted: “I was addicted to Xanax for, like, four years or something like that when I was working a lot internationally. . . . I was like, ‘Oh, look, If I take this, I think I’m gonna sleep.’ I’m going to go sleep for eight hours. . . . [It became] this habit, and suddenly, before I knew it, it was three or four years and I couldn’t even think of sleeping without Xanax. I then decided I should stop, so I just stopped and I did two weeks where every night, it was like I’d been in a shower [from sweating] and then I got into bed. . . . People told me after that it was super dangerous [to] . . . stop [Xanax] dead.”

The I Am Here to Save Your Life singer went on to share how a chance meeting with Brent at Rock am Ring in 2022 saved him from taking Xanax again, amid vocal issues.

He told the host: “You know, I had the most moment and – you know, it’s a willful namedrop, ‘cause it’s fun for the programme. I had an incredible moment – Mastodon is one of my favourite bands. I love that band, and we were playing Rock am Ring last year. . . . We were on the same stage . . . and I went to watch them. . . . They’re so heavy, and I didn’t know if they’d – you know, when you see heavy bands, you’re like, ‘Are they going to be friendly?'”

He continued: “I went over to them and we took pictures with them. I’d just met Brent really quickly, and he asked me how I was doing. I’d been having trouble with my voice, and I wasn’t feeling good. I was like, ‘When I’m in Europe, f*** it. I’m just going to take the Xanax. I’m just going to go back to my Xanax, and I had my little pill bottle with me. I was like, ‘I’ll stop in a month, when I finish the tour. I just have to get through this tour with my voice.’

“I was telling myself all the reasons why I should take the Xanax. . . . And I said to [Brent], ‘I’m doing alright’ and I rattled this thing in my pocket. I said, ‘But I think that I shouldn’t probably do it, right? I think I’m gonna go back on this train.’ He goes, ‘Don’t!’ . . . I said to him, ‘Yeah, I don’t feel good with my voice and I don’t feel very healthy. I’m being an idiot but I really think I might spend the month doing shows and eating Xanax so I can get through this.’

“He then went on to tell me his journey with it. How he was addicted to it for way longer, of course. Way heavier than me and way longer than me on Xanax and he was telling me about how, actually, it makes you – everything slows down to the point of close to death. All your organs. Everything. Completely. Everything slows down. I just hugged him and was like, ‘You just saved me because your wisdom and insight and experience have made me not do that.'”
