Nutritionist reveals if ground flaxseeds are better: ‘Whole flaxseeds are very healthy, but…’

Flaxseeds are one of the superfoods which have grown to become a wellness favourite lately. Whether they are added to smoothies or sprinkled over salads, this seed has earned a good reputation.

Flaxseeds are of two types: Ground and whole. (Picture credit: Shutterstock)

But are you taking the right kind of flaxseeds? This seed can be consumed in two forms: whole and ground. Whole flaxseeds come with a hard outer shell, while ground flaxseeds are usually crushed into a fine powder.

Nutritionist Deepshikha Jain, MSc Global Public Health Nutrition, UK and national diabetes educator, shared in an October 29 Instagram post about the key differences between these two forms of flaxseeds, and which one should you ideally consume for better nutrients.

Whole flaxseeds

According to the nutritionist, when you eat whole flaxseeds, your body cannot properly break them down.

“Flax seeds are very healthy, but when you are consuming whole flaxseed, they have a very hard outer covering, and that makes it harder for your body to digest and absorb the nutrients, making the flaxseeds just pass through your intestine and your body without getting absorbed,” she elaborated.

What does this mean? Your digestive system, because of the harder outer shell, cannot access the nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, fibre inside. Then the flaxseed remains undigested and passes through your intestine and comes out in stool. In other words, you don’t get much of the health benefits.

Ground flaxseeds

However, as per the nutritionist, if you remove the hard coating by grinding the flaxseed, which is how ground flaxseeds are prepared, then there are better advantages.

“When you ground the flax seeds, this will actually break the hard outer covering, making the nutrients more easily available for the body, hence giving you all the health benefits,” Deepshika said, highlighting the value of ground flaxseeds and the increased nutritional absorption in the absence of the outer coating.

“So it is always better to consume ground flaxseeds over whole flaxseeds if you want to get all the health benefits,” she recommends.

So what is the takeaway? While there isn’t any risk in choosing one form over the other, the difference lies in the wasted health potential if you stick to whole flaxseeds. Because of the interference of the hard coating, the body cannot extract all the nutrients, so they go unused. Next time, before you add flaxseeds to your smoothie bowl, consider grinding them up and sprinkling them for better nutrient absorption.

Stacey Jackson Breaks Ground with the First-Ever Musical Novel

When Stacey Jackson describes her new project, How a Gangsta Rapper Made Me a Better Mom (Integrated Musical Edition), she isn’t just announcing a book. She’s unveiling a format no one has ever attempted before a hybrid of fiction and original music that she hopes will transform the way audiences consume stories.

Each version connects story and song in real time through QR codes, hyperlinks, and embedded audio. “This is a first-of-its-kind format that fuses fiction with original music in real time,” Jackson explained.

The scope is ambitious. Alongside the novel, audiences will get The Original Book Soundtrack on streaming platforms and an Immersive Edition in spatial audio. Each chapter is paired with a track designed to heighten the emotion of the narrative. For the audiobook, those tracks are fully mastered and integrated within the storyline—making it one of the first audiobooks in history to deliver a cinematic, musical experience.

The idea stems from Jackson’s long-standing desire to merge storytelling with the euphoric energy of her music. Her dance anthems have climbed international charts, and collaborations with icons like Snoop Dogg cemented her place in the music world. But she wanted to do more than release singles; she wanted to reinvent the way stories could be told. “Everything I’m putting out this year is about truth and reinvention owning your story, even the messy bits,” she said. “Blinded By Goodbye might sound like a breakup anthem, but it’s really about that blink moment when the rug gets pulled out and you decide to stand up anyway sparkles and all”.

It’s fitting that her debut musical novel is rooted in resilience. The book explores identity, motherhood, and the surprising lessons Jackson learned through her unconventional journey in entertainment. The music deepens that narrative, echoing themes of heartbreak, empowerment, and survival. “Pain can be fierce,” she reflected. “And it’s euphoric because healing doesn’t have to be quiet. Sometimes you just need to blast a breakup banger and shake it off with a little glitter and a lot of bass”.

For Jackson, this format also reflects her Gen X identity a generation she champions on her podcast The Gen-X-Perience. “We were reinventing ourselves long before it became a branding strategy,” she explained. “The show dives into those layered stories of reinvention that wasn’t loud but was powerful, resilient, and often hilariously messy”. That same ethos of resilience and reinvention threads through her musical novel, proving that she’s not only telling stories for her generation but also innovating how they’re told.

By being the first to integrate book publishing and music this way, Jackson is doing more than experimenting she’s setting a precedent. This launch isn’t just a release; it’s the beginning of a new storytelling format that could inspire other creators to merge mediums. “This pioneering format signals a new era for readers and listeners alike where storytelling is no longer bound to the page, but fully brought to life through music”.

On the Ground at the 2025 US Open, Huge Crowds, High Fashion, and a Honey Deuce or Two

New York doesn’t lack for topflight sporting venues, nor for athletes who can set a crowd on its feet. Yet there’s been a frisson of something extra at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center during this summer’s US Open.

It started during Fan Week, when a new mixed-doubles format meant look-ins from major singles players—Carlos Alcaraz, Emma Raducanu, Iga Swiatek, Casper Ruud, Jack Draper, Jessica Pegula, Frances Tiafoe, Madison Keys, Novak Djokovic… to name only a few—though it was a pair of Italian doubles specialists, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, who claimed the $1 million prize. Needless to say, it was the most well-attended Fan Week in history, welcoming nearly 240,000 people to the Open’s grounds over six days.

Then came the start of the singles tournament, with defending champion Jannik Sinner and a freshly buzz-cut Alcaraz both making sparks fly across their first three matches—while on the women’s side, fan favorites Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka are set to face off in the round of 16 on Monday. (Aryna Sabalenka, our other defending champ, should have an easier go of it against the unseeded Spaniard Cristina Bucșa this afternoon—but hey, you never know.)

It’s been a crowded Open, a loud Open, an occasionally hostile Open (we’re looking at you, Medvedev and Ostapenko)—but it’s also been an Open teeming with jaw-dropping athleticism and pulse-quickening excitement, enough to make even the casual viewer fall in love with the game.

Photographer OK McCausland was out in Flushing this week to capture the players, the ball kids, the fans, the celebrities, the fashion, and—of course—the Honey Deuces. See the Open through her lens right here.
