“The Gorgeous Miss Piggy,” by Leo Lerman, was originally published in the March 1978 issue of Vogue.

Watch out Barbra, Liza, Divine Miss M., Ann-Margret. Here’s Miss Piggy. Her game: world show-biz center stage take-over. “All these men,” she smolders, “they want me…” And women and children—they all want her to sing, dance quip, flip her glorious hair., and lust after hr unrequited passion, Kermit the Frog, on Jim Henson’s The Muppet Show: probably the most-viewed TV show in the world. They’re even bonkers about it in Iron Curtain Yugoslavia. When onscreen time in Britain was scheduled for early Friday evening (weekend shopping, pub, commuting), the populace near-rioted until it was switched to Sunday evening (everybody ‘round the “telly” and cheering). “I know,” murmurs Miss Piggy throatily, lowering her heavily lashed, lavender-painted eyelids coyly over her burning eyes and settling her snout demurely. “Thank you. But, after all, I’ve always believed that I was destined to become a superstar.”

Miss Piggy’s obviously lived a great deal, and although Kermit the Frog’s her “love of my life,” she’s had, reveals Frank Oz, “Well, not affairs but dalliances. When she recently danced, sang, and shared a steam bath with Rudolf Nureyev on a Muppet Show, she went bananas over him. She calls him ‘Rudi-baby.’ Well, she wouldn’t mind having a dalliance with him. Ringo Starr sent her roses. Elton John didn’t want to get involved with her, but he was really involved.”

In the onscreen-this-month TV-er Julie Andrews: One Step into Spring, Miss Piggy hogs the show. “I wouldn’t have minded so much,” says Miss A., “except that throughout the show Miss Piggy kept telling me I was singing flat.” “Well, she does go on forever with her songs,” says The Piggy, “and, frankly, she needed help. I merely offered to replace her.” Miss Piggy loves to help. Her advice to other girls: “I’m strong as an ox, but I’m not a relative. I do have a health regime, and the basis of it is: whatever exercises I can do on high heels. Beauty? I think I’m a natural blond, and I would suggest very strongly that you think so, too. My eyes are so beautiful—it’s a curse. My fashion advice? Wear what suits you. Luckily, everything suits me. I happen to be very fortunate. Everything I put on looks beautiful. But don’t ever try to look prettier than me—it’s futile.”

Sessa Harnesses Soulful Sparks on Gorgeous LP » PopMatters

by jummy84 November 8, 2025
written by jummy84

As Sessa, singer-songwriter Sergio Sayeg has a particular knack for making sounds that are both cosmic and pastoral, gentle and awesome. His lyricism follows in this same vein, engaging in deeply poetic explorations of nature and the quotidian. It is not surprising that on luminous new album Pequena Vertigem de Amor, dedicated in large part to the birth of his and his partner’s first child, he continues to find beauty in the world and bring it forth in his typically gorgeous brand of languid funk. This record, like all of his music so far, is easy to enjoy, and more nuances emerge with each listen.

The album’s title is a fitting one: a little vertigo of love, a phrase that evokes the heady feeling of irrational and unconditional affection. It works in tandem with the wistful gauze of instrumentation that shifts and flows throughout the record. Sayeg’s acoustic guitar and lead vocals; an equally important backing chorus of singers Cecília Góes, Lau Ra, Ina, and Paloma Mecozzi; Biel Basile’s typically light-handed percussion; Marcelo Cabral’s grounding bass, and a handful of strings, synths, winds, and horns make for a substantial and versatile ensemble. They can (and do) drive as well as they drift.

Sessa – “Vale a Pena”

There’s no need to push, though, and Sessa and company know it. Every song feels as natural as breathing, albeit with quirkier rhythms. It’s remarkable how organic the wah effects sound on “Bicho Lento,” and how Filipe Nader’s alto sax on “Gestos Naturais” evokes the sensation of wind sweeping through leafy branches. To make something sound so effortless takes a tremendous amount of skill and care. These are here. This is art that springs from love.

That love is audible in the jaunty keys of “Nome de Deus” and the luscious string arrangements of the closing ballad “Revolução Interior” alike. In “Roupa dos Mortos”, the wordless quality shines through in the instrumental eloquence of pulsing bass and fluttering flutes. In “Dodói”, there is a childlike innocence in both its lexical content (“dodói” roughly translates to “boo-boo”) and the plaintive stomps of drums and synths. The affective layers of Pequena Vertigem de Amor are rich and multisensory.

Stylistically, Pequena Vertigem de Amor leans retro. Warm hues of 1970s samba and soul are foundational to the whole album, but are not so garish as to shoehorn it into the throwback realm. Instead, they are open, capacious enough to let Sayeg let loose with meditations on his present situation as lover, father, and human. It is an LP of sounds familiar enough to radiate comfort and original enough to feel fully realized.

Sessa – “Nome de Deus”

Sessa’s body of work thus far has been uniformly excellent, extending to this third full-length release. Refreshing musical subtleties and emotional complexities make Peqeuna Vertigem de Amor worth repeat listens. As Sessa, Sayeg makes magic. He knows how to harness the sublime in all things and translate it into song for us. Whether pondering the wonders of new life or simply standing in joy against inevitable struggles, Sessa finds sparks of inspiration everywhere and knows just what to do with them.

Patterns

Katy Pinke and Will Graefe

Glamour Gowns

29 August 2025

Good cover albums should always adhere to two basic principles. First, try to pick at least a few relatively obscure songs. Second, always put a unique stamp on your version whenever possible. Weezer mercilessly broke both rules in 2019 with their awful Teal Album. Who wants to hear anyone play note-for-note renditions of instantly recognizable songs? That’s not art, it’s karaoke. Fortunately, Katy Pinke and Will Graefe have selected an interesting and unique batch of songs from a diverse group of songwriters for their beautiful, intimate covers album, Patterns.

Pinke – whose sophomore album, Strange Behavior, was released earlier this year, and Graefe – a highly skilled guitarist who’s worked with Okkervil River, Kesha, Orville Peck, Sam Wilkes and more – conceived the idea of a covers project during a series of duo gigs before recording a series of songs live to tape “in a single-day burst of inspiration”, according to the press notes. The result is refreshingly simple: Pinke on vocals and Graefe on guitar.

While Pinke’s first two records showed a gifted songwriter at work, she’s also known as a tremendous interpreter of other people’s songs: Strange Behavior included a breathtaking cover of Blossom Dearie’s “You Are There”, which stopped me dead in my tracks when I heard her perform it in a tiny Boston-area club a few months ago. She and Graefe do not disappoint here.

Bobbie Gentry‘s “Courtyard” opens the record with gentle confidence and even provides the album’s title in the chorus (“Patterns on a courtyard floor / Illusions of all I’m living for”). While Gentry is best known for her monster 1967 smash hit “Ode to Billie Joe”, choosing a lesser-known song is a brilliant move. The song selection takes an even more interesting turn with SZA‘s “Good Days”. While retrofitting the neo-soul single for an indie-folk template seems unusual on the surface, Pinke’s exquisite vocals, alongside Graefe’s sympathetic accompaniment, showcase the song’s tenderness and beautifully simple melodies.

Frank Ocean and Swedish rapper Yung Lean are among the additional contemporary artists covered on Patterns. The shimmering balladry of Ocean’s “Dear April” is given an achingly heartfelt, almost minimalist treatment here, while Lean’s “Agony”, full of fragile experimental touches in its original form, is transformed by Pinke and Graefe into a long-lost pop-folk classic. It’s essential to note that none of this resembles any genre parody. When, for example, the Gourds released their hillbilly take on Snoop Dogg‘s “Gin and Juice”, it was likely for a cheap laugh. Pinke and Graefe appreciate the artistry in all the songs they’ve chosen to cover here, regardless of format or the song’s original style.

Elsewhere, Paul Simon‘s “Night Game” (from Still Crazy After All These Years) is covered with the record’s one guest appearance. Jake Sherman provides a beautiful chromatic harmonica solo. While it’s not exactly a deep cut, the Beach Boys‘ “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)” is a pleasant surprise, combining uncomplicated romantic sentiment with the harmonic touches that are so prevalent on the Pet Sounds album. Elliott Smith has been covered numerous times before and since his untimely passing, receiving two songs on Patterns, “Clementine” and “Everything Means Nothing to Me”, which excel in his typical confessional, storytelling style of writing and are treated with grace and eloquence.

The record’s high point is the cover of Jeff Buckley‘s “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over”. Pink and Graefe don’t reinvent the wheel here; the song is a masterpiece of tender, aching passion, and making large-scale changes to it would be unwise. They stick to a simple, unadorned, acoustic rendition, and Pinke’s voice is an astonishing gift, from gentle murmurs to sweet falsetto to heartfelt soaring; never grandstanding or attempting to outshine Buckley’s classic rendition. The late singer/songwriter’s music has never been in better hands than it is here.

Katy Pinke and Will Graefe are exceptional artists in their own right when performing their own compositions, but as they prove here, they’re also master interpreters with seemingly unlimited gifts. Patterns deserves a seat at the table alongside classic covers albums such as Bryan Ferry‘s These Foolish Things, Willie Nelson‘s Stardust, and Cat Power‘s The Covers Record. It really is that good.

Watch Bad Bunny Host, Doja Cat Perform “Aaahh Men!” and “Gorgeous” on Saturday Night Live

by jummy84 October 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Earlier this year, Bad Bunny helped to close out Saturday Night Live’s 50th season as its finale musical guest. The Puerto Rican superstar returned to NBC last weekend to host the show’s Season 51 premiere. He starred in sketches throughout the evening as a sperm donor hopeful, a fan of the Netflix original film KPop Demon Hunters, and the inventor of the Spanish language, and led the SNL cast in a recreation of the ’70s Mexican sitcom El Chavo del Ocho. Joining Bad Bunny was musical guest Doja Cat, who made her Saturday Night Live debut performing “Aaahh Men!” and “Gorgeous” from her new album Vie. Check out those performances and sketches below.

During his opening monologue, Bad Bunny discussed his recent 31-show concert residency in Puerto Rico and the news that he’ll be performing the halftime show at Super Bowl LX this February. He also noted that the evening marked his fourth appearance on Saturday Night Live, joking “I think Marcello [Hernandez] is getting nervous that Lorne has a new favorite Latino.”

Bad Bunny previously hosted SNL in 2023. In November, he’s set to embark an international tour in support of his new album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos. Doja Cat’s Tour Ma Vie World Tour also kicks off that same month.

This week’s episode of Saturday Night Live will be hosted will be hosted by Amy Poehler alongside musical guest Role Model. Then, on October 18, Sabrina Carpenter will pull double duty as host and musical guest for the first time.

See where Bad Bunny’s 2020 album YHLQMDLG falls on Pitchfork’s new list of “The 100 Best Rap Albums of All Time.”

Watch Doja Cat Perform ‘Gorgeous,’ ‘Aaahh Men!’ from New Album

The rapper-songwriter debuts on SNL by performing two singles from her new album, Vie

Doja Cat made her musical guest debut on Saturday Night Live—the season 51 premiere—with performances of a pair of singles from her new album, Vie.

After an introduction from SNL host Bad Bunny, the rapper-songwriter opened with the Jack Antonoff-produced “Aaahh Men!”

On Vie, Doja Cat’s fifth studio album and the follow-up to 2023’s Scarlet, the Los Angeles native “devotes an entire album to the pop and R&B sounds of the Hair Decade, an album full of pastels and neon and mega-cheese sax solos,” as Rolling Stone‘s Rob Sheffield wrote in a review. That was reflected in the set design for “Aaahh Men!” and the attire of the six others on stage, including the two bassists for the bass-centric song.

Trending Stories

Doja Cat’s second performance was of “Gorgeous,” one of the several tracks on Vie that incorporates the saxophone.

Last week, Doja Cat announced her 50-date Tour Ma Vie World Tour, which begins in New Zealand next month. She’ll begin the U.S. leg next October in Detroit, and will wrap up at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Dec. 1.

Tanner Adell wrapped a successful, seven-city trek Thursday (Aug. 21) as her Giddy Up, Gorgeous Tour came to a close in Nashville.

Best known for her 2023 breakout song “Buckle Bunny” and her news-making collaboration “BLACKBIIRD” alongside Beyoncé, Tiera Kennedy, Brittney Spencer, and Reyna Roberts, the young country-pop star held her own on her second headlining tour, following 2024’s The Buckle Bunny Tour.

“It’s not just about playing songs — it’s about sharing stories, energy and real moments with the people who’ve been riding with me since day one,” Adell said of the tour ahead of her first show in Milwaukee, reminding fans to “pack your boots, your glitter and your heartbreak” for a show she described as a “full-blown emotional rodeo.”
