Zubeen Garg’s Manager Breaks Silence On Music Rights And Royalties After Singer’s Death

by jummy84 September 29, 2025

Days after the sudden and tragic passing of renowned singer Zubeen Garg, his longtime manager and close associate, Siddharth Sarma, has issued a heartfelt and detailed statement on Facebook. In an open letter, Siddharth addressed the growing public speculation surrounding the ownership of Zubeen’s vast music catalogue and the revenue generated from his artistic work.

Siddharth began by clarifying widespread misconceptions, particularly regarding who owns the rights to Zubeen’s music. He stated that the majority of Zubeen’s body of work — an estimated 38,000 songs — is owned by various music labels and production companies, not by Zubeen himself.

“Almost all of Zubeen da’s songs, even the biggest blockbusters, were done before I entered his life,” Siddharth wrote. “He often lamented how he was shortchanged — producers and labels earned crores, while he received only modest payments. This can be verified with those companies directly.”

In an effort to reclaim control over his creative output, Zubeen took significant steps in 2021 by launching his own music label, Zubeen Garg Music LLP . Siddharth Sarma was also a partner in the venture, with Zubeen holding a majority 60% stake.

However, Siddharth admitted that the LLP had not yet become a major source of income. “The LLP has generated only a few thousand rupees monthly so far. The entire amount remains untouched in the company account,” he wrote, adding, “I consider it my duty to ensure his family inherits his rightful share.”

Siddharth also addressed concerns about royalties. He clarified that any royalties Zubeen earned in his role as a composer or lyricist were deposited directly into Zubeen’s personal account. He further stated that these funds will now be transferred to Zubeen’s widow, Garima Garg, ensuring that the singer’s earnings remain within his family.

Zubeen Garg’s Untimely Death

Zubeen Garg, a beloved figure in Assamese and Indian music, passed away on September 19 while visiting Singapore for the North East Festival. He was found in critical condition in the sea by local authorities and was immediately taken to a hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU. Despite receiving intensive medical care, he later succumbed to his injuries.

Zubeen’s death has sent shockwaves across the country, particularly in Assam and the Northeastern region, where he was considered a cultural icon. Known for his genre-defying music, multilingual prowess, and relentless passion, Zubeen recorded more than 38,000 songs across various Indian languages during his illustrious career.

As the investigation into his death continues, tributes from fans, artists, politicians, and cultural figures have poured in, honouring his immense contribution to Indian music and culture. Many remember him not only as a prolific artist but as a voice that amplified the identity and issues of the Northeast.

Siddharth’s statement offers a glimpse into the lesser-known aspects of Zubeen’s professional journey, shedding light on the legal and financial complexities surrounding his work. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of artists having control over their creative rights, even in industries where such control is often elusive.

The untimely death of one of Assam’s favorite musicians, Zubeen Garg, has created a big gap in the hearts of people across the state and other places as well. While tributes keep coming in, a poignant video on social media has emerged with the singer fighting for life in the water in what is assumed to be his last moments.

The video, which is said to have been shot during his latest visit to Singapore, captures Zubeen swimming sans life jacket, clearly tired and struggling for air as he attempts to swim towards a raft. Friends can be seen trying to rescue him, but the horrific images have left fans in shock. This comes just days after Zubeen was seen having fun at a cruise party, with a life jacket and a smile.

According to reports, Zubeen had initially entered the water with a life jacket but removed it shortly after, saying it was uncomfortable. He returned to swim without one, and during this second attempt, he is believed to have suffered a medical episode. Singapore authorities later confirmed “drowning” as the official cause of death, with officials also suspecting he may have experienced an epileptic seizure.

Zubeen passed away on September 19 while swimming in the sea with friends and colleagues on his trip to attend the North East Festival, a festival that promotes the culture of the region globally. His mortal remains were flown back to Guwahati on September 22, and he was cremated with full state honours in Sonapur on September 23. The government of Assam has since decided to develop the cremation ground into a memorial, and another in his native town, Jorhat.

Fans all over the nation were in shock after it was announced on Friday evening that singer Zubeen Garg, best known for Ya Ali, died after a freak scuba diving accident in Singapore. He was 52. The singer rose to fame in Assam in the 90s, and became a household name nationally with the success of his song, Ya Ali. Now, the late singer’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, has appealed for peace during his departure and posted a video message for fans.

Zubeen Garg’s wife Garima Saikia Garg appealed to fans in a video message.

What Garima said

As per a video message that was shared by India Today Nepal, Garima Saikia Garg, wife of Zubeen Garg, said in Nepali, “I am urging everyone—Zubeen is coming home. When he was alive, you all showered him with love and blessings, and Zubeen loved all of you in return. I hope the last rites for his departure go peacefully. The police, along with the state administration, are fully supporting us.

Zubeen must come back, and we will all get to see him one last time. Along with Zubeen, Siddharth, who has been like a brother to him from the very beginning, will also be coming. As you all know, in 2020, when Zubeen suffered a massive seizure, we had to go to Mumbai for further treatment. During COVID, when everything was shut down, Siddharth went out of his way to get us food and supplies, and even brought Zubeen back from Mumbai by bus.

‘I request everyone to set aside any negative thoughts…’

Zubeen has always been our own, and whenever anyone spoke against Siddharth, Zubeen always stood by him. Please allow Siddharth to be part of Zubeen’s final journey. I request everyone to set aside any negative thoughts about Siddharth. I need all my people around me tomorrow, and I will need Siddhart’s support—without him, I cannot do anything.

Zubeen has many unfinished tasks, and I cannot complete them alone. I also request that all FIRs filed against Siddharth be withdrawn.”

Zubeen Garg, the celebrated musician, actor, and activist, was in Singapore to participate in a three-day cultural festival promoting North East India on the global stage. Tragically, his untimely death came just a day before he was set to perform. The organisers have decided to cancel the festival after the tragic news. An FIR was launched against the organisers of the event.
