Family Talks Foundation And Festival

VIBE Lineage is an interview series with the heirs of Black excellence. Now that their legendary predecessors have gained high regards in their own right, these younger kin are blazing their own trails.

Otis Redding is considered to be one of the greatest and most influential R&B singers to ever exist. Known as the “King Of Soul” for timeless hits including “(Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay,” “Stand By Me,” and “Try A Little Tenderness” —which was famously covered by Chris Brown in the 2007 classic, This Christmas— Redding made a powerful, indelible, global impact during his 26 years on Earth.

Not only does his legacy live on through his discography, it’s tangibly felt because of his widow, Zelma and their children: Dexter, Karla, and Otis III. Ask Karla and she’ll joke that her brothers got their father’s musical talents, but she didn’t. Instead, she’s using her talents to help run the Otis Redding Foundation along with the Center For The Arts and King of Soul Music Festival.

Formally launched in 2007— 40 years after Redding’s tragic death— the foundation serves as the umbrella to mentor the next generation of musicians as well as celebrate those who align with Redding’s commitment to education, philanthropy, and the community.

VIBE spoke with Karla Redding-Andrews (Vice President/Executive Director of the Foundation), and her son, Justin Andrews (Director of Special Projects and Outreach), to discuss why their favorite songs of his are deep cuts, how being part of the foundation helped them become the singer’s biggest fans, and how the three aforementioned entities intertwine and play a part in keeping the legacy of Otis Redding alive.

“The Otis Redding Foundation was the first of the dream that my mom and dad shared, even before his untimely passing in December of 1967,” Karla reflected over Zoom. “They were already being very philanthropic and [promoting] the importance of staying in school paired with an education with music in the arts […] In 2007, we officially formed in a public capacity the Otis Redding Foundation, because Mom, even after Dad died, continued to provide scholarships and continuing education opportunities for young people to make sure that they got their best foot forward to do what they wanted to do in life.”

Karla confessed that the crooner “always knew” what he wanted his legacy to be and so did Zelma. “Mom would say Dad would always say he’s not the best entertainer or the best singer, but what he can do is inspire people to be their best authentic selves. They remained just really positive people all the time— never arrogant, always humble. I think that is what the legacy of Zelma and Otis Redding is all about,” she expressed.

Ironically, she and her siblings admittedly didn’t fully grasp what it meant to be their legacy while growing up. “Learning dad’s catalog, and even growing up, my brothers and I didn’t quite understand the magnitude of the Otis Redding. He was just dad to us,” Karla explained.

It didn’t click until after she graduated college and really had to “learn his legacy” and it was then that she accepted this innate pursuit.

“Once I really accepted the fact that my dad was a big deal, I was in college. I think with any celebrity kid, you don’t want to be known as ‘Otis Redding’s daughter,’ so you got to go out and try to prove to yourself that you can make it in a world outside of having this great legacy to live under,” she confessed. Now, being Redding’s daughter is worn like a badge of honor.

Karla explained, “I said, ‘Listen, that’s who you are, and you should be so proud. There can only be one Otis Redding’s daughter, and that’s you, and you better get your behind in gear and accept it, and do it.’ I was like it would be crazy for you to allow someone else to pick up the legacy like this and promote it, other than family, and what your mom has been working all of her life to uphold and to make right. I found my place, and I think I’m the best at promoting all things Otis Redding and the Otis Redding Foundation. I am fortunate to be able to do this.”

In doing so, Karla quipped that “it’s almost like being Otis Redding’s biggest fan all over again,” as she found herself “learning the music, the clothes he wore, what he loved to eat, how was he with the other musicians, and listening to the stories that people tell about what a great human he was.”

Upon acquiring such knowledge, she instilled it all in her own children. For Justin, he noted, “I always preface this by saying this is someone that I never had the opportunity to meet [but I love] putting the pieces together of actually who my granddaddy is as a person.”

Whether it’s him listening to how other artists talk about Redding’s impact or hearing it from his fans, Justin loves that Redding is “still a pillar in the music industry” especially in areas like Nashville where R&B isn’t the dominant genre, and noted, “Otis Redding still has that impact on every single genre in the music industry.”

For them, they prefer Redding’s deep cuts. Justin often rotates between “Ole Man Trouble” and “Cigarettes and Coffee” whereas Karla’s pressing play on “Love Man” and “I’ve Got Dreams To Remember”— with the latter being a poem Zelma wrote for Redding that he turned into a surprise song.

She praised her father for “always [being] totally authentic to himself.”

Explaining, “He never wanted to change who he was, or how he sang, or what he looked like for anyone. He was true to himself, and I think to be an artist and to stay in that moment like that and not say, ‘I’ve got to be like the Motown [standard].’ He was like, ‘No, this is who I am and this is who I’m authentically always going to be, whether it’s accepted or not.’ Dad started exactly as he finished. He never faltered.”

Karla feels if Redding were here today, he’d be very hands-on when it comes to the foundation, Center For The Arts, and music festival. “He’d be right here in this place every moment of the day, any time we needed him to engage and be involved with these kids […] He would just be so humble and so proud,” she shared.

With both her and Justin handling the foundation and its subsidiaries, Karla said, “The world is ours right now. This was a dream of his, and here we are now still living in that moment. As long as we continue to get kids in here, if we get the next Otis Redding, so be it. But if we don’t, we’re still going to make sure that we are providing confidence, and self empowerment, and creativity in this space.”

Justin added, “We can do whatever we want to. If all else besides the music, the instruments, and everything we do here, we are instilling confidence in kids. Watching those kids come in from day one and be kind of shy, and be on the outskirts, to literally walking on stage with 3,500 people on a sold-out crowd on one of the most historic stages in the world— that to me is why we do it. Just keep pushing that envelope of Otis Redding.”

Upon accepting the foundation’s Ray Harris Lifetime Achievement Award onstage at Atlanta’s Flourish by Legendary, Jam shared that “Ray Harris was so instrumental early in our careers with literally the first record that we did at SOLAR Records, which was ‘Wild Girls’ by Klymaxx. So to get an award from him with his name on it is absolutely amazing.”

Calling the occasion a full-circle moment, Lewis added, “We’re just two guys who like to make music. You all are the ones who made them hits.”

The foundation also awarded three other top awards. National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters (NABOB) president/CEO James L. Winston was presented with the Chairman’s Award by Living Legends Foundation chairman David C. Linton. Zelma Redding, widow of soul legend Otis Redding and president/founder of the Otis Redding Foundation, was the recipient of the Legacy Award, presented by Sony Music Publishing chairman/CEO Jon Platt. And Quality Control Music (Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, City Girls) COO Kevin “Coach K” Lee and CEO Pierre “P” Thomas were given the Impact Award.

For the first time, six female executive trailblazers were also saluted. Joining the aforementioned Selolwane (the Music Executive Award) and Cynthia Horner (Media Icon Award) in that circle were iHeartMedia Chicago vp of programming Kashon Powell (Jerry Boulding Radio Executive Award), nationally syndicated radio host DeDe McGuire (DeDe in the Morning; Frankie Crocker Radio Personality Award), broadcast and music industry executive Carole Carper (Mike Bernardo Female Executive Award) and West Entertainment Services CEO Louise West (Kendall Minter Entertainment Advocate Award).

In presenting the award to West, Grammy-winning artist Anthony Hamilton noted, “I’m standing here after 30 years [working with West], having complete ownership of my publishing and my work, my music — and I owe that all to you.”

Powell said of her honor, “This reward is not just a recognition of past achievements. It’s a reminder of the endless possibilities the future holds.” Horner commented during her acceptance speech, “Right On! magazine is a cultural phenomenon. And it’s my honor to not only have been the editor of the publication, but now I’m one of the owners of the same publication. It’s now Black-owned; it wasn’t before.”

Selolwane, who oversees hip-hop, R&B and mixshow promotion at RCA, described herself as “just a conduit of the art to the masses,” highlighting “the fact that we every day get a chance to spend time with some of the most creative people on this planet and really be a part of their success stories.”

Event Buyers Live announces British Heart Foundation as new charity partner

by jummy84 September 18, 2025
written by jummy84

Event Buyers Live (EBL) is proud to reveal a new charity partner for EBL25.

This year, the hosted buyer event is raising vital funds for the British Heart Foundation (BHF). But that’s not all. Attendees will also have the opportunity to take part in essential CPR and defibrillator training on the final day, too.

Neil Fagg, co-founder of EBL, explained: “Every year, EBL supports a charity and moving forward (after 3 years supporting Mental Health UK), we have chosen to support the British Heart Foundation.

“It’s a charity and purpose that is too close to the team and me sadly, the facts and statistics on the BHF website don’t lie – Heart and circulatory diseases cause around a quarter (26 per cent) of all deaths in the UK.  I lost a key figure in my world this year due to XXX. Out of a dark situation, light can be found however, and from one loss, another life and many more can be saved through awareness and pushing others to get checked and tested.  People I admire, trust and mentors, explained to focus on a charity based on personal reasoning and feelings.

“We want to raise as much money as possible for the charity and help Team BHF raise awareness of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Why? Because every day, in the UK, 270 people are admitted to hospital after having a heart attack and there are more than 40,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests in the UK each year. How many of those heart attacks could take place on your event site or office environment?

“Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chance of someone surviving a heart attack by up to ten per cent. If we can educate our audience on the crucial work that BHF does, raise money to support its work, and give our audience an amazing opportunity to learn a life-saving skill than I could not be more proud, and I know my family will be too. Especially my Godfather who also trained others and served more than XX years with St John’s Ambulance.”

Team BHF will deliver CPR and defibrillator training at EBL25, which takes place at Carden Park, Cheshire (November 10-12).

Tess Swainson, fundraising manager at BHF, said: “We’re delighted that EBL has chosen to support the British Heart Foundation and the vital work that me and the team carry out on a daily basis. There are more than 7.6 million people in the UK living with CVD and a range of heart conditions so the more people that Team BHF can educate on the amazing work that we do, the better.

“I am looking forward to attending EBL with my colleagues to deliver CPR and defibrillator training and talk to event professionals about common questions we get asked every day, such as what to do if you have to carry out CPR on a woman. We have worked with lots of organisations, delivering support and advice so we can’t wait to help spread the message even further.”

Fagg continued: “We want to support BHF, which is why we would like to raise as much money as possible and fund their amazing work by asking everyone to make any donation possible.  For those attending EBL25, there will be a blind and live auction running on-site, but anyone can support our goal and target of raising £10,000 this year via our JustGiving page – www.justgiving.com/page/event-buyers-live-2025

Dakota Johnson is rocking fifty shades of sheer.

The Materialists star stepped out in a jaw-dropping take on the naked dress for the Kering Foundation’s Caring for Women dinner in New York City Sept. 11.

For the outing, Dakota donned a floor-length sheer black Gucci gown with lace detailing that barely covered her skin underneath. And to keep her—er—private areas covered, she paired the dress with a matching bra and underwear set.

As for her accessories? The 35-year-old let her head-turning fashion steal the show, opting to style her hair in a classic updo, sporting a tennis necklace and donning coordinating silver earrings.

Of course, Dakota wasn’t the only star to earn a few double takes at the Kering Foundation event. Lauren Sánchez Bezos made her first red carpet appearance since tying the knot with Jeff Bezos in June for the occasion. Plus, Colman Domingo, Winnie Harlow, Demi Moore and Adrien Brody all posed in haute couture ‘fits for the cameras as well.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Meer Foundation Delivers Relief Kits, Supplies To 1,500 Families Affected By Punjab Floods

Shah Rukh Khan’s charitable organisation, the Meer Foundation, has stepped up to provide vital assistance to families affected by the recent devastating floods in Punjab. In partnership with local NGOs, the foundation has launched a comprehensive relief effort, reaching 1,500 households across districts, including Amritsar, Patiala, Fazilka, and Firozpur.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Meer Foundation Sends Relief To 1500 Punjab Floods-Affected Families

The aid packages comprise essential medicines, hygiene items, food supplies, mosquito nets, tarpaulins, foldable beds, cotton mattresses, and other critical necessities. This initiative aims to address immediate health and safety needs while also supporting long-term rebuilding efforts, helping families restore their lives with dignity.

Celebrities Responding To Flood Relief In Punjab

Punjab is facing one of its most severe flood crises in recent history, with rising waters from the Beas, Satluj, Ravi, and Ghaggar rivers displacing thousands. The disaster has sparked an outpouring of support from the entertainment and sports communities, with many celebrities contributing resources for relief and recovery.

Salman Khan’s Being Human sent 5 lifeboats to rescue the affected families. Akshay Kumar has committed Rs 5 crore, calling his contribution “seva” rather than charity. Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh has donated 10 boats to assist rescue efforts, while his wife Geeta Basra has been actively distributing supplies on the ground.

Punjabi artist and actor Ammy Virk is working to reconstruct 200 homes for displaced families, even postponing the release of his upcoming film. Singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh has adopted 10 villages in the Majha region, focusing on sustainable solutions like solar power and essential supplies for long-term rehabilitation. Sonu Sood has urged his followers to donate generously, with his sister Malvika leading on-the-ground relief activities.

What Happened In The Punjab Floods?

The floods in Punjab in 2025 began intensely in late August, between August 26 and 29, triggered by heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir that caused the rivers Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, and Ghaggar to overflow. This resulted in flooding in districts such as Ferozepur, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, and Kapurthala, submerging farmland and homes. By August 29, more than 1,000 villages were submerged. The situation worsened in early September due to continuous rainfall and controlled releases from dams, affecting all 23 districts. This has been described as the most severe flood in Punjab since 1988.

11 Celebs Wore *This* Foundation at the Venice Film Festival

by jummy84 September 9, 2025
written by jummy84

There’s only one foundation that meets (nay, exceeds) virtually every standard for icon status. It’s A) recommended by an overwhelming number of makeup artists, B) editor-approved, having won a Who What Wear Beauty Award, and C) worn by celebrities when they walk the red carpet in front of screaming fans and high-definition cameras.

Most recently, 11 celebrities wore it while on the red carpet at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival. Yep, 11, including Gemma Chan, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Sofia Carson. If that’s not proof it has a next-level formula, then I don’t know what is. Ahead, see the exact foundation and how it looked IRL.

Armani Beauty

Luminous Silk Natural Glow Foundation

Size: 1 oz | Shades: 40 | Finish: Natural | Coverage: Medium (buildable)

Yep, it’s Armani Beauty’s cult-favorite Luminous Silk Foundation. Makeup artists and facialists recommend it to literally everyone. Take it from celebrity makeup artist Tobi Henney, who previously told Who What Wear, “I love Armani Luminous Silk, as it creates such a healthy-looking glow to the skin. It has buildable coverage, which works perfectly depending on how you like your skin to look.”

Etienne Ortega is a celebrity makeup artist and the founder of Ortega. His clients include Lana Del Rey and Christina Aguilera. He previously told Who What Wear that it’s his “favorite foundation of all time.”

Skin experts say it works just as well for oily and acne-prone skin types as it does for dry skin types (and everything in between). It’s thanks to a hydrating formula that doesn’t clog pores or exacerbate acne. “I always recommend Armani Luminous Silk to my clients with oily or acne-prone skin. Its light, oil-free formulation gives your skin a luminous glow—just like its name promises—without causing any acne or congestion,” says esthetician Dakota Katt.
