Harvard gastroenterologist shares 3 foods to avoid that cause fatty liver: ‘Sodas and juices are liquid poison…’

Cases of fatty liver are on the rise, largely fueled by poor dietary habits and processed foods. While the condition can have serious long-term consequences, simple changes to what you eat can significantly reduce fat accumulation in the liver and lower the risk of liver disease.

Gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi, trained at AIIMS, Harvard and Stanford universities, is breaking down the role of unhealthy nutrition choices that contribute to the accumulation of fat in the liver. In an Instagram video posted on September 9, the gut doctor revealed three common food choices that are detrimental to your liver health and should be avoided in order to protect your liver, stressing that simple dietary changes make a big difference.

Sugary drinks

According to Dr Sethi, sugary drinks like sodas and juices “are loaded with empty calories and can severely damage your liver, contributing to fatty liver disease.” Sugary drinks, especially those containing high-fructose corn syrup, contribute to insulin resistance and liver fat accumulation by overwhelming the liver’s ability to process fructose, leading to fat buildup and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, according to a study published in Hepatology Communications.

The gastroenterologist dubs soft drinks as “liquid poison” and recommends sticking to water, sparkling water, tea or coffee, as they are much healthier choices.

Deep-fried foods

Second on Dr Sethi’s list are deep-fried foods. He states, “deep-fried foods, especially those cooked in unhealthy oils, should be avoided,” to reduce liver fat because they are high in unhealthy trans fats and saturated fats, which lead to fat accumulation, inflammation, obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, according to Chennai Liver Foundation.

Ultra-processed foods

Lastly, Dr Sethi explains, “Items like chips, candies, sugary cereals, hot dogs, and instant noodles are highly processed and detrimental to liver health.” Ultra-processed foods are high in unhealthy fats, added sugars, and artificial additives that strain the liver, as per Hepatitis NSW, and can contribute to liver inflammation and disruption of the gut microbiome.

Tamannaah Bhatia’s fitness trainer reveals 5 worst foods for weight loss: Aloo paratha, Coke, bhatura and more

by jummy84 September 7, 2025

Siddhartha Singh, who keeps sharing workout videos from his sessions with actor Tamannaah Bhatia, took to Instagram on August 15 to share his advice for weight loss as he highlighted five types of food to avoid or limit. Siddhartha said you should avoid sugary drinks like ‘normal Coke’ due to their high empty-calorie content. Also read | 7 weight loss myths busted by celebrity fitness trainer Tridev Pandey: ‘Never go for Ozempic…’

The fitness coach suggested you avoid eating aloo parathas on their own for their lack of nutritional value. (Representative picture: Freepik)

He added that dal (lentils), which is seen as a high-protein source, is actually higher in carbohydrates. He also criticised homemade aloo parathas (potato-stuffed flatbreads) for their lack of nutritional value unless paired with protein, which increases overall calories.

Siddhartha flagged fried foods, such as bhature (deep-fried bread made from refined flour), for their high calorie count per serving. He also added that packaged processed foods, such as instant noodles, which are primarily made of refined flour, should also be avoided due to their minimal nutritional benefit and high carbohydrate content.

Coke ‘has 100 to 150 calories, just empty calories’

In the video he posted, Siddhartha said in Punjabi, “These are the five worst foods for weight loss. Number one is Coke. This is not Diet Coke, normal Coke. It has 100 to 150 calories, just empty calories. Number two is dal. Dal, when used as a source of protein, is more of a carbohydrate source and less of a protein source.”

‘One bhatura has 150 calories’

He added, “On number three comes your favourite homemade aloo parathas. These also have no nutritional value, unless you eat some protein with them, but then the calories will increase a lot. For fat loss, avoid them. Number four – fried foods, like this bhatura. One bhatura has 150 calories, and if you eat one bhatura, or if you eat two bhature with chole (chickpea curry), 500-600 calories are gone, and so are your weight loss dreams.”

Siddhartha concluded: “And lastly, comes these packaged things, like this ‘paharon wali’ (hinting at Maggi, a comfort food that many love to eat during a trip to the mountains), you know what, I can’t take its name otherwise they’ll send a legal notice. But this is also just refined flour that will get stuck in the intestines of your stomach. Technically, it doesn’t happen like that, but you get the idea – just carbohydrates, and it doesn’t keep your stomach full.”

Woman shares she ‘lost all her belly fat in 1 month by cutting out these 5 foods’: ‘You don’t need magic pills’

by jummy84 September 7, 2025

Nutritionist and health coach Ruchi Sharmma took to Instagram on July 18 to share how she toned up by avoiding certain foods. She said, “I lost close to 5 kg and got a flatter stomach in a month. You don’t need magic pills. You need to know what to stop eating first. These 5 food types were silently holding me back.” Also read | French biochemist shares simple hack for enjoying fast food with fewer blood sugar spikes

In her post, titled, ‘I lost all my belly fat in a month by cutting out these 5 foods’, Ruchi shared foods you can avoid or limit if you want a flat belly like her:

1. Refined seed oils (Sunflower, soybean)

She said, “Found in namkeens, fried food, biscuits, restaurant meals, you name it, these oils mess with your hormones, gut, and digestion.” What I did: switched to ghee and cold-pressed coconut oil. My bloating reduced, energy improved, and mood stabilised.”

2. Bread, noodles, pasta and grains on their own

Ruchi added, “Eating carbs alone can spike your blood sugar and keep you in fat-storing mode. But carbs aren’t the villain, they just need balance. What I did: I started pairing carbs with protein and fibre, like adding paneer to my dosa or tofu with rice and sabzi. Energy = stable. Hunger = gone.”

3. Tea-time snacking: biscuits, rusks, diet namkeen, makhana

Ruchi said, “These sneaky snacks seem ‘lightl but keep your insulin constantly high. Mindless snacking between meals = constant fat gain. What I did: moved to 2-3 proper meals and 1 intentional snack if needed. No grazing. No distractions. Just real food.”

4. Hidden sugars in ‘healthy’ foods

“Protein bars, health drinks, flavoured yoghurts, granola – all sold as ‘healthy’ but packed with sugar, gums, and low-quality ingredients. What I did: focused on whole, clean protein like eggs, tofu, Greek yoghurt, protein powders, paneer, chicken, and fish. Cravings vanished, and skin cleared up, too,” she said.

5. Flavoured coffees, nut milks and ‘healthy’ smoothies

Ruchi shared, “These are loaded with additives, sugar, and artificial ingredients, even when they claim to be dairy-free or plant-based. What I did: switched to black coffee, plain milk or herbal chai. Less sugar = better gut = clearer mind.”

Ruchi further shared what she ate and did instead to achieve a flat belly:

⦿ Added good fats and fibre like mixed seeds and sabzi to every meal

⦿ Made every meal protein-rich including snacks

⦿ Didn’t give up carbs; instead, enjoyed balanced versions of pasta, dosa, paratha, and sandwiches

⦿ Focused on habits, not hacks

⦿ Walked daily, got sunlight, slept better

AIIMS, Harvard gastroenterologist shares top 3 reasons for bloating, says ‘even healthy foods can trigger symptoms’ | Health

Bloating can be uncomfortable and confusing. AIIMS, Harvard gastroenterologist Dr. Sethi shares the top 3 causes and how to tackle them effectively.

Bloating can be uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing, affecting your daily routine and overall digestion. Many people struggle to identify why it happens, as the causes are often overlooked or misunderstood. Dr Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist and liver specialist trained at AIIMS, Harvard and Stanford Universities, shared in his September 3 Instagram post the top 3 reasons for bloating and how to tackle them effectively. (Also read: Gastroenterologist shares 7 common mistakes people make while cooking in air fryer: ‘Always clean the tray and use…’ )

Dr. Sethi reveals key factors behind bloating and digestive discomfort.(Shutterstock)

1. Diet

Dr. Sethi explains that what you eat can play a huge role in bloating. “The biggest culprits are lactose, fructose, fructans, sorbitol, and other carbohydrates that your gut does not fully absorb. Even healthy foods can ferment in the digestive tract and trigger symptoms if you are sensitive,” he says. He emphasises that it’s not just “junk” foods, sometimes foods considered healthy can also lead to gas and discomfort depending on an individual’s gut sensitivity.

2. IBS or Functional Dyspepsia

According to Dr. Sethi, conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or functional dyspepsia mean your gut is more sensitive than usual. “The movement of your intestines is disordered, which can lead to gas getting trapped, belly distention, and bloating,” he explains. He also points out that these issues are often linked to changes in gut bacteria, meaning your digestive system may react more strongly to foods or stress than usual.

3. Constipation

Slow-moving bowels can also be a major factor in bloating. Dr. Sethi says, “Even if you are going once a day, if your colon moves slowly, food sits longer, leading to more fermentation, gas buildup, and bloating.” He adds that constipation can make the gut overly sensitive, contributing to the same problems seen in IBS, including gas trapping, belly distention, and alterations in gut bacteria.

Nutritionist lists 5 everyday foods to keep us going all day: Complex carbs to hydration champions | Health

A healthy diet does not consist of fancy dishes; it is all about the perfect balance in nutrition and finding the simplest food items that can provide us that.

A balanced diet that includes vegetables, proteins and more is important. (Shutterstock)

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Prachi Jain, chief clinical nutritionist, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram said, “Basic function of food is to give energy which is required to fulfill our daily day to day activities but eating right and safe food is an art of living. Be mindful while selecting your food options to stay active and healthy. Choose locally grown food, seasonal food, which are readily available at affordable prices.” Also read | Nutritionist shares 10 easy fat loss hacks that will help you lose weight without starving: Start every meal with dahi

The nutritionist further noted down the simple foods to add to diet to keep going:

1. Complex carbohydrates:

Rice, whole wheat roti, multigrain preparations, and millets like ragi, jowar, bajra, maize, and oats, along with foods like bananas and sweet potatoes, are rich in complex carbohydrates. These not only provide sustained energy by releasing it slowly but also supply fibre to keep you fuller for longer. On average, 1 gram of carbohydrates provides 4 kcal of energy.

2. Protein:

Proteins play a key role in muscle building, tissue growth, and repair. They also support strength and endurance, making them essential for overall health. Add protein-rich foods like whole pulses, sprouts, eggs, lean meat, chicken, fish, tofu, and paneer to your daily meals. Each gram of protein provides 4 kcal of energy.

3. Fats:

Fats are often misunderstood, but they are essential for good health. In fact, 1 gram of fat provides 9 kcal, more than double the energy from carbohydrates. The key lies in choosing healthy fats such as nuts (almonds, walnuts), seeds (flax, chia, pumpkin), avocado, and freshwater fish. Good fats help you feel full, curb cravings, stabilize mood, and most importantly, aid in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. 4. Fruits and vegetables:

Fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fibre, making them essential for overall health. Seasonal varieties are especially rich in antioxidants that fight free radicals and strengthen immunity. Low in calories yet nutrient-dense, they make a smart choice for mid-morning snacks or fillers between meals.

5. Water:

Water may not be classified as a nutrient, but it is vital for life. An adult needs about 2–2.5 litres daily to stay healthy. It regulates body temperature, prevents dehydration, and directly impacts energy levels, physical performance, and overall wellbeing. Tips to stay active:

  • Eat short, frequent and balanced meals that include complex carbohydrates, protein and good fats.
  • Stay hydrated. Dehydration leads to fatigue and low concentration which directly affects your activity.
  • Stay away from processed sugars, carbonated drinks, fried food, packed, preserved, canned bakery and ready-to-eat food.
