Filmfare Flashback: Shatrughan Sinha on Rekha’s Unmatched Professionalism

by jummy84 October 10, 2025

She becomes a different person on the sets than what she is in real life. Given how moody she is in real life, it’s remarkable how she has always remained patient on the sets. Even after 15 or 20 retakes given by her co-stars on the sets, she has never lost her cool. She has always exhibited the zeal and enthusiasm of a newcomer. Even today, she rushes to the monitor to see the results of her work. Her capacity for experimentation and learning is remarkable. I fondly recall our first song together, Pyar ka samay, from Raampur Ka Lakshman (1972), where I danced with Rekha. It was unforgettable. I only took 13 retakes to match steps with her. We’ve experienced many highs and lows in our careers together and have worked on several films together like Raampur Ka Lakshman, Do Yaar (1972), Kashmakash (1973), Kahtey Hain Mujhko Raja (1975), Parmatma (1978), Jaani Dushman and, Muqabla (1979), Chehre Pe Chehra (1981), Maati Maangey Khoon (1984) and many more.

Rekha

My wife, Poonam (Sinha) shares a close bond with Rekha, their birthdays fall close and it’s heartwarming to see her always reach out to wish Poonam. Thanks to my Sawal Jawab column in Filmfare, where I sometimes comment on her and she doesn’t always take it sportingly, we’ve had periods where she hasn’t spoken to me for a time. I remember a film where I starred along with Rekha, Khoon Bhari Maang (1988), directed by Rakesh Roshan, where we managed to convey so much on screen without even speaking to each other in between shots. It was Poonam who brokered peace between us. Made us shake hands. Indeed, Rekha has consistently proven to be a great professional, reminding us of the grace of Hema Malini. Let me add here that there was a time when because of my stupidity and her childishness, Hema and I weren’t on speaking terms but still completed many films together successfully.

It’s truly fitting that Filmfare is compiling this thesis on Rekha’s birthday—she deserves every bit of recognition. As she celebrates her 70th year, we must give full credit to the one and only Rekha, who has maintained her elegance, grace and mystique throughout the years.

Filmfare Flashback: When Sharmila Tagore Took Home The Black Lady for Her Role in Aradhana

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

As Filmfare nears its 70th edition, we take head back to 1970, to the 17th Filmfare Awards. On 11 May 1970, Bombay (now Mumbai) saw the stars of Hindi cinema gather to celebrate films from 1969. Among the biggest winners that night was Aradhana, a romantic drama directed by Shakti Samanta.
Aradhana was released on 7 November 1969 in Hindi. It starred Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore in lead roles. The story mixes romance, sacrifice, identity, and strong emotions. Vandana (Sharmila Tagore) falls in love with Arun (Rajesh Khanna), who is an Air Force pilot. After Arun’s death in a crash, Vandana must face stigma, raise her son against odds, even when forced to give him up. She then becomes his caretaker later in life without revealing she is his mother. Over time, the film shows her silent strength and love.
At the 17th Filmfare Awards, Aradhana led the nominations with 9 nods. It won Best Film, and Sharmila Tagore won her first (and only) Best Actress award for her role as Vandana. Meanwhile, Rajesh Khanna was nominated for Best Actor for Aradhana, but the award went to Ashok Kumar for Aashirwad.

Other highlights: Anokhi Raat won four Filmfare awards, including Best Screenplay and Best Dialogue. Aradhana also gained praise for its music: songs like Mere Sapno Ki Rani became iconic. The film quickly became a blockbuster, not just in India, but also in the Soviet Union. It marked the rise of Rajesh Khanna as a superstar, and it firmly established Sharmila Tagore’s status among leading actresses.

Looking back to the 17th Filmfare Awards, Aradhana remains a landmark, not just for awards, but for stories that touch the heart. As Filmfare returns with new celebrations, it’s worth remembering how films like Aradhana shaped the legacy, melding romance, strength, music, and unforgettable performances.

Filmfare Flashback: Looking Back at Dilip Kumar and Nutan’s Wins for Devdas and Seema

As we gear up for the grand 70th edition of the Filmfare Awards in Gujarat, this is the perfect moment to look back at the glorious past of Indian cinema’s most celebrated event. Today, we turn the pages back to the 4th Filmfare Awards held in May 1957.

Two legends of Hindi cinema made history as Dilip Kumar won the Best Actor award for his unforgettable performance in Devdas, and Nutan clinched her very first Best Actress trophy for Seema (1955). This went on to become the late actress’ first of five Best Actress awards. Later, they posed together with their trophies, making it a memorable frame.

Take a look at the picture:

V Shantaram won the Best Director Award for Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje, and this film also won the Best Film award. In fact, the film swept the awards that year. AK Parmar won the award for Best Sound Design, and Kanu Desai bagged the Best Art Direction award for Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje.

Other awardees were Motilal (Best Supporting Actor; Devdas), Vyjayanthimala (Best Supporting Actress; Devdas), GG Mayekar (Best Music Director; Shree 420) and Amiya Chakravarty (Best Story; Seema), among others.

From icons like Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, and Nargis in the early years, to Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, and Rishi Kapoor, every era of Hindi cinema has left its imprint on the Filmfare stage. In more recent years, Shah Rukh Khan’s wit as a host, Salman Khan’s electrifying performances, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s elegance, Deepika Padukone’s grace, Priyanka Chopra’s energy, and Ranveer Singh’s larger-than-life stage presence have turned the awards into a spectacle of glamour and entertainment. The 70th Filmfare Awards will take place in Gujarat in October this year.

Stay tuned to Filmfare for more updates on the awards.
