Gynaecologist lists 3 red flags of PCOS in teens; shares tips to manage naturally

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is increasingly affecting girls as young as 13 or 14, but its early signs often resemble normal puberty changes, leading to delayed diagnosis. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Yashica Gudesar, director and unit head, obstetrician and gynaecology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dwarka said, “Early detection and timely management can prevent long-term health consequences and help young girls lead healthy, balanced lives.” Also read | Gynaecologist shares 7 lesser-known symptoms of PCOS: Fertility problems to hair thinning

Dr. Yashica Gudesar further listed the early warning signs of PCOS in young girls that parents should be aware of:

1. Watch for irregular periods

One of the first warning signs of PCOS in teens is irregular or missed periods. While some fluctuation is normal during the first couple of years after menarche, consistently skipped cycles, very heavy bleeding, or fewer than eight periods a year may signal hormonal and inflammatory imbalances that require medical attention.

2. Notice physical changes

High levels of male hormones (androgens) in PCOS frequently lead to overt physical signs like excess face or body hair, severe acne (especially along the jawline), oily skin, dandruff, and dark patches of skin on the neck or underarms. Sudden weight gain, particularly excess belly fat, without an apparent cause is another frequent sign. 3. Emotional and mental health matters

PCOS doesn’t just affect the body, it can impact emotional well-being too. Symptoms might include mood swings, fatigue, anxiety, and poor sleep. Since many PCOS symptoms mimic normal teen stress, they might be downplayed and go unnoticed, unless parents and caregivers are observant.

Why early diagnosis is important?

“Identifying PCOS early allows for better management and helps avoid complications down the road. Importantly, PCOS is treated according to symptoms, not every girl needs medication. Proper evaluation with a gynaecologist or endocrinologist, along with blood tests and ultrasounds (if required), ensures that treatment or lifestyle guidance is tailored to individual needs,” said the doctor.

Tips to manage PCOS naturally:

He gynaecologist said, “Making lifestyle modifications is critical for teenagers with PCOS. Eating a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, and tracking menstrual cycles can all help reduce inflammation, balance hormones, and improve overall health. Establishing these habits early builds a strong foundation for the future.” Also read | Gynaecologist lists 5 PCOS symptoms in teens that parents often overlook: Rapid weight gain, severe acne

Hormones are chemical messengers responsible for proper functioning of the body. From menstrual cycle to metabolism to mood regulation, hormones play a significant role in each of these processes. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Aruna Kalra, director, obstetrics and gynecology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram said, “When hormone levels get too high or too low, changes in your health become obvious. Identifying these early on can lead you to get timely medical attention and avoid complications.” Also read | Doctor shares 7 facts about hormonal imbalance: ‘Eating less and moving more won’t fix you’

Dr Aruna Kalra further shared 10 signs of hormonal imbalance that we should know:

1. Irregular or skipped periods

Abnormal changes in your menstrual pattern, like heavier or lighter than usual bleeding, skipped periods, or erratic timing, can indicate conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disease, or perimenopause.

2. Unexplained weight changes

Weight gain or loss that occurs without shifts in your diet or exercise habits can signal imbalances in hormones like insulin, cortisol, or thyroid hormone.

3. Persistent fatigue

Chronic exhaustion in spite of proper rest may be associated with hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue, or hormonal shifts in reproductive hormones such as estrogen and progesterone.

4. Mood changes and anxiety

Sudden irritability, mood swings, or heightened anxiety can be seen when levels of estrogen and progesterone change, particularly at PMS, perimenopause, or postpartum.

5. Skin problems

Adult acne, excess oiliness, or dryness can be caused by elevated androgen levels or decreased estrogen, both of which can influence oil production and skin health. Also read | Nutritionist reveals 6 daily habits that impact your hormonal health, affect PCOD symptoms

6. Hair loss or excess hair growth

Scalp hair loss or excessive facial and body hair can be a sign of hormonal conditions such as PCOS or thyroid disorders.

7. Hot flashes and night sweats

Sudden spells of heat or sweating, especially at night, are commonly associated with low estrogen levels during perimenopause and menopause.

8. Sleep disturbances

Sleeping or falling asleep might become a challenge when progesterone or estrogen levels decrease.

9. Decreased sex drive

Loss of sex drive may result from low levels of estrogen, testosterone, or thyroid hormones.

10. Digestive problems

Bloating, constipation, or diarrhea occurring in sync with your menstrual cycle can also be caused by hormone changes. Also read | Hormonal imbalance and mental health: Doctor shares 5 ways how hormones can affect your mood

Sushin Shyam Flags Netflix Over Uncredited Use of Aavesham Track in Splinter Cell: Deathwatch Teaser

Malayalam composer Sushin Shyam, who gave Aavesham its pulsating soundscape, has publicly raised concerns after hearing his track The Last Dance in the teaser of Netflix’s new animated series Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. The track, originally created with rapper Hanumankind, plays prominently in the action-packed promo, but neither artiste was credited.

A Familiar Beat, An Absent Credit

The teaser quickly went viral, but for Malayalam cinema fans, the music was unmistakable. Sushin drew attention to the omission in typically wry fashion, commenting beneath the official YouTube upload: “Thanks Netflix for featuring my track! Would’ve been even cooler if my name had made it to the credits too.” His words sparked a wider discussion online about how regional creators often slip through the cracks when their work is repurposed for global platforms. As of now, neither Netflix nor Ubisoft, which owns the Splinter Cell franchise, has issued a statement.

Milestones Beyond the Controversy

The composer, however, has also had reasons to celebrate. Recently, Sushin described experiencing his “first real fanboy moment” when AR Rahman followed him on Instagram, a gesture he said left him overwhelmed and grateful. On the personal front, Sushin tied the knot last year, while professionally he has been on a short breather since delivering back-to-back hits with Manjummel Boys and Aavesham.

Still, he hasn’t been idle. July saw him drop Ray, his first independent single, marking a step into non-film music. And on the horizon are two big projects: Balan: The Boy, directed by Chidambaram and written by Aavesham filmmaker Jithu Madhavan, and Torpedo, filmmaker Tharun Moorthy’s next, starring Fahadh Faasil, Naslen, Arjun Das and Ganapathi.

The Bigger Picture

Sushin’s blunt yet humorous response highlights a larger debate: when regional music travels beyond borders, are its creators given their due? While The Last Dance finding space in a high-profile Netflix production is undeniably a milestone, the lack of credit raises uncomfortable questions about visibility and fairness. For now, the incident has amplified Sushin’s voice beyond Kerala and reaffirmed the growing global appetite for music born in Indian cinema.

Having chronic eye pain? Eye surgeon shares 6 red flags of glaucoma to never overlook | Health

Glaucoma, often called the silent thief of sight, is an optic disorder that can cause irreversible vision loss. What makes it especially dangerous is that it develops quietly, without noticeable symptoms in the early stages.

What makes glaucoma more dangerous is the absence of early prominent symptoms.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Vineet Sehgal, senior glaucoma specialist, Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals said, “Most of the times, the patient might not be knowing that he is having glaucoma. Glaucoma significantly affects the optic nerve, and when the symptoms become pronounced, it indicates permanent damage.” Also read | Doctors call glaucoma the ‘silent thief of sight’: Here’s how to stop it and save your eyes from permanent blindness

Dr. Vineet Sehgal further listed the red flags of glaucoma to watch out for, to address it immediately.

1. Frequent change of power of near glasses:

Frequent change of power of near glasses might be suggestive of glaucoma.

2. Halos around the lights:

Rainbow rings or halos can be experienced by patients having high eye pressure.

3. Eye pain or headache:

Patients with acute onset glaucoma may present with headache, stony eyeball, redness, and nausea.

4. Loss of peripheral vision:

The patient may complain that he is not able to see the objects/vehicles coming from the side. Also read | Why early detection is crucial for glaucoma? Doctor explains warning signs to watch out for

5. Family history of glaucoma:

While there are no symptoms, being a close relative of someone with glaucoma increases your risk. In such cases, regular eye check-ups should be one’s priority, even if there are no symptoms.

6. History of diabetes, eye injury and drugs:

History of injury to the eye, high power of glasses, Diabetes, use of steroids, and drugs like antidepressants are risk factors which warrant regular eye pressure monitoring and check-up.

“Early detection is the best defense against glaucoma. It is recommended to have a comprehensive eye exam every year after the age of 40, or earlier if you have a family history or other risk factors. Don’t ignore the small changes in your vision; your body is always giving you signs that something is wrong,” said Dr. Vineet Sehgal.
