Anushka Shetty swears by yoga to stay fit: On her 44th birthday, check top 7 weight loss asanas like surya namaskar

Anushka Shetty – known for Telegu films such as Baahubali: The Beginning, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty – celebrated her 44th birthday on November 7. So, what keeps her looking ageless and fit? You guessed it: yoga! The Tollywood star swears by the ancient Indian practice, crediting it for transforming her life. Happy birthday, Anushka Shetty! Check out what she said about yoga. (Instagram/ Anushka Shetty)

Over the years, the actor has spoken about her health and fitness in interviews and social media posts, sharing that one of the most consistent aspects of her fitness journey has been yoga. In a June 2017 Instagram post, Anushka Shetty said, “Most memorable moment in my Life is when I took the decision to teach Yoga. I come from a family of doctors and engineers. It was a brave decision on my side to go for yoga, but it has totally changed my life and is responsible for everything now.”

If you usually skip yoga for a high-intensity workout, thinking it will be more of a calorie burner, then you might not be entirely correct. If you are wondering if yoga can help with weight loss, in an August 2024 interview with HT Lifestyle, Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar, founder of Akshar Yoga Kendraa, shared some effective asanas for weight loss and weight management.

However, Himalayan pointed out that yoga alone won’t burn enough calories to reduce weight: “It’s important to note that while asanas can boost your metabolic rate and support weight management, they should be combined with a balanced diet and overall healthy lifestyle for optimal results.”

That said, here are seven asanas he recommended that are designed to boost your metabolism and support weight management. Try incorporating them into your routine:

1. Surya namaskar (Sun salutation)

This dynamic sequence of postures is a full-body workout that engages multiple muscle groups and elevates your heart rate. The flowing movements, combined with deep breathing, increase your body’s oxygen consumption and calorie burn, ultimately boosting your metabolic rate.

2. Chaturanga dandasana (Plank pose)

This powerful asana engages your entire body, particularly your core muscles, arms, and legs. Holding the plank position for an extended period can increase muscle tone, improve posture, and rev up your metabolism.

3. Virabhadrasana (Warrior pose)

The warrior poses, such as Virabhadrasana I, II, and III, challenge your lower body strength and engage your core muscles. These poses help build lean muscle mass, which in turn increases your resting metabolic rate, allowing you to burn more calories even when at rest.

4. Bhujangasana (Cobra pose)

This backbend asana targets your abdominal muscles, stimulating digestion and boosting your metabolic rate. Additionally, it strengthens your back muscles, improving overall posture and core strength.

5. Adho mukha svanasana (Downward-facing dog pose)

This inversion pose engages multiple muscle groups, including your arms, shoulders, legs, and core. It not only strengthens your body but also promotes better circulation and lymphatic drainage, which can aid in weight management.

6. Navasana (Boat pose)

This challenging asana targets your abdominal muscles, engaging your core and promoting better posture. By strengthening your core, you can improve your overall metabolic efficiency and burn more calories throughout the day.

7. Halasana (Plow pose)

This inverted asana stimulates the thyroid gland, which plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism. Additionally, it stretches and tones the abdominal muscles, contributing to better digestion and improved metabolic function.

Yoga is not just a physical practice; it’s a holistic approach to wellness. Combine it with a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, and you’ll be on your way to achieving your fitness goals and maintaining overall well-being. How the Monster Was Made to Fit Jacob Elordi

Guillermo del Toro’s well-reviewed “Frankenstein” is now in limited theaters from Netflix, on its way to a shoo-in surfeit of Oscar nominations, especially for its crafts. (It’s also moving up in the Metacritic rankings.) Before the film heads to streaming on November 7, IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” caught up with one of the film’s producers, J. Miles Dale, who joins this week’s episode as a special guest. Dale won the Best Picture Oscar in 2018 for producing “The Shape of Water” and also oversaw del Toro’s noir remake of “Nightmare Alley” (2021) as well as the del Toro-produced “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” (2019).

On this week’s episode, Anne Thompson is fresh back from the Middleburg Film Festival in Virginia, which showed the importance of regional festivals as a building block to Oscar nominations. (Many of the awards-prognosticating cabal, including IndieWire’s Marcus Jones, were on the ground also.) Audience prizes went to Focus Features’ “Hamnet” from Chloé Zhao and Searchlight’s “Rental Family” from HIKARI, both Oscar contenders as we head deeper into the season.

Co-host Ryan Lattanzio previews AFI Fest, now underway in Los Angeles through the weekend and featuring films from “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” (which brought The Boss himself for a performance at Hollywood and Highland) to the world premiere of “Song Sung Blue” and beloved indies like Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid’s audacious “Yes” and Max Silverman-Walker’s plaintive Josh O’Connor vehicle “Rebuilding.”

Recently, IndieWire tapped the AFI Fest programming team to share their picks for the best films to see.

Our special guest, producer Dale, has been working with Guillermo del Toro since he produced “Mama” (2013), which marked the directing debut of Andy Muschietti. He produced the FX series “The Strain” for four years, as well. Two period films, Best Picture Oscar winner “The Shape of Water” and Best Picture nominee “Nightmare Alley,” prepared Dale and his team for the daunting task of delivering del Toro’s two white whale movies: “Pinocchio” and “Frankenstein,” with a budget of $120 million, both backed by Netflix.

Del Toro saw James Whale’s “Frankenstein” when he was seven and read Mary Shelley’s classic when he was 11, said Dale. They discussed the film for years, as many potential backers passed on it. “When we realized we were going to do it,” said Dale, “we knew it was a hill to climb.” That’s because the project was weighted with expectations. Del Toro had been thinking about it for a long time, and the bar was high.

Luckily, it was not Dale’s first go-round. “My muscles and our collaborators’ stretched nicely to be ready for it,” he said. Del Toro’s philosophy of filmmaking: There are four legs. Costume design, production design, cinematography, and hair and makeup all work together, from color coding and contrasts to lighting.

The ball got rolling with Guy Davis, Del Toro’s longtime concept designer, as well as Bernie Wrightson’s “Frankenstein” book illustrations. As always, Del Toro gave his team “lots to look at,” said Dale. “Everyone comes together. Del Toro is a craft junkie. We made fabrics, the paint department was meticulous, the moss squad was laying moss. It got granular in terms of design.”

The biggest glitch came nine weeks out when Andrew Garfield fell out of availability. All the creature designs were customized to his face and body. Replacement Jacob Elordi was 6-feet-6-inches tall, which was a challenge for body sculptor Mike Hill, who had sculpted 42 pieces for Garfield. Elordi had wanted to play the creature, and here brings enormous empathy to him. But he had been playing a World War II prisoner in Justin Kurzel’s series “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” and had lost tons of weight. Now, he had “to stuff his face with pizzas to be a big strong monster,” said Dale. “It was something different every day.”

At the start of the movie, Elordi as the black-caped creature is convincingly large and terrifying. The production set up on a frozen lake a few hours north of Toronto, where Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac) arrives on a sled, facing driving snow (blown by giant Volkswagen engines). The 19th-century sailing ship with authentic rigging was built in a parking lot outside their Toronto studio, with an ice esplanade to get up to it. “It was 130 feet long and had to hold 100 or more people, sailors and crew,” said Dale. When you see the creature fall into the lake, it’s a tank. And when he pushes the ship, “it’s for real. The ship is on a giant gimbal. It was a major engineering project. It makes your brain hurt some days.”

The film’s other design feat was Frankenstein’s lab. They built a water tower comprised of eight different sets. “The giant exterior was built on the fairground, where we made the carnival for ‘Nightmare Alley,’” said Dale. “The foyer lobby set, the lab, in its various evolutions, visitors’ quarters, the top of the tower, and where he climbs to the top, the monster lair, and the escape water chute, which is not such a subtle metaphor for a birth canal. The exterior, which took four months to build and we shot for three days, provided the base for the tower.” Finally, there were also handmade miniatures. Del Toro tries to minimize the use of CG in order to emphasize the craft.

The final cut is two and a half hours, whittled down from over three hours. There was talk of two movies, but they decided to stick to one. It was important to del Toro to be faithful to the original Shelley. “He does identify with monsters,” said Dale. “He wanted to make sure to get the creature’s point of view. That’s unique about our film. He speaks and articulates.”

Brandon Flowers was the perfect fit

by jummy84 October 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Chrissie Hynde has shared a track-by-track guide to her star-studded new covers album, ‘Duets Special’, where she talks about how Brandon Flowers was the “perfect fit” for the project and more. Check it out exclusively on NME below.

The new record from the Pretenders frontwoman is set to arrive tomorrow (Friday October 17) via Parlophone (pre-order/pre-save here). Comprising 13 tracks, the project boasts team-ups with the likes of The Killers‘ frontman, Blondie‘s Debbie Harry, Depeche Mode‘s Dave Gahan and Garbage‘s Shirley Manson.

‘Duets Special’ also features the late Mark Lanegan on a rendition of Elvis Presley‘s ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’, as well as collaborations with The Black Keys‘ Dan Auerbach, Cat Power, Alan Sparhawk and more.

She explained in the Q&A that she didn’t get the chance to meet Lanegan before his death in 2022, and talked about why she decided to cover a Morrissey classic with Power, as well as revealing her “highlight” of the LP and which collaborator she has an “odd thing in common” with. Read in full below.

Let’s talk about the collaborations on ‘Duets Special’. The album opens with ‘Me And Mrs Jones’ with k.d. lang. You first crossed paths with k.d. on the ‘Tame Yourself’ album for PETA, is that right?

“I met k.d. on a tour we did. Very early days. It was up in Canada and we bonded right from the start because of our mutual interest in animal welfare. PETA stuff followed.”

Your performance at the ‘Mark Lanegan 60’ concert last year was symbolic of how special a person and artist Mark was. What was it like singing Elvis‘ ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ with him?

“I never got to meet him. I read his book Sing Backwards And Weep, and only then got familiar with his music. Then I realised what I had been missing. A great, great singer and songwriter. We emailed, and I was so looking forward to meeting him. But fate had other ideas.”

Of all the Rolling Stones‘ songs you could have chosen, what led you and Lucinda Williams to sing ‘Sway’?

“I always dug the song, and so did Lu.”

Next up is ‘Dolphins’. You interviewed Tim Buckley when you were working for the NME. Was it important to include one of his songs on ‘Duets Special’?

“Well it’s a Fred Neil song, but Tim did the definitive version. He was one of my favourite all-time singers.”

Tell us about your friendship with Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power. You have toured together and spoken to Chan for Interview Magazine. What does ‘First Of The Gang To Die’ mean to you both?

“She’s a mate. We did a tour together, and I’m a huge fan. She has such a distinctive voice and style. We both loved the song. Morrissey being one of our best ever songwriters.”

‘Always On My Mind’ is another song most people associate with Elvis. What does Elvis’ music mean to you and Rufus?

“I’m pretty sure Elvis’ music means a lot to any artist. He was the King.”

How did you first come to connect with Carleen Anderson? There’s a great photograph of you, Carleen and Lalah Hathaway together at a Billie Holiday tribute in 2004. Together, you’ve chosen Brenda Holloway’s ‘Every Little Bit Hurts’…

“That’s when I met Carleen.  We discovered that day that we had a mutual friend, the guitar player Donnie Baker. A Cleveland guy. Then I became pals with Carleen who is the best soul singer alive.”

What drew you to 10cc‘s ‘I’m Not In Love’? Why was that song right for Brandon Flowers?

“I’m mates with Kevin Godley, a good friend. I think I must have seen Kevin recently around the time, and was thinking about him. Great song. Brandon was the perfect fit with his beautiful voice.”

You chose a John Lennon song from The Beatles‘ catalogue, ‘It’s Only Love’. What was it like to sing John’s lines with his son Julian?

“I’ve met Julian and seen him perform. He is so talented.  I didn’t know if he’d be up for singing one of his father’s songs. But he obviously was, and it was a highlight to sing along with him.”

Why did you choose a Low song, ‘Try To Sleep’, to sing with Debbie Harry? This is an exciting and unexpected surprise.

“I loved Low – one of my all-time favourite bands. I toured with Debbie in Australia and thought her voice would suit it. I love her low-key, dignified approach. A great surprise that I got to sing with her!”

Your performance with Alan Sparhawk on ‘County Line’ is beautiful…

“I love it too. It was Benji’s idea. I originally had in mind for Mimi Parker to sing it but then Mimi died. So I sheepishly approached Alan, and he agreed to do it. I love his voice.”

How did you and Alan meet?

“I saw Low play and hung around after, as I was dying to meet them. I struck up a conversation with Mimi and told her Deb and I were doing her song for a duets album, and she stopped me in my tracks when she said point-blank, ‘Why didn’t you ask me to sing one with you?’ My excuse was that I didn’t know her – which was the truth – but I did after that night and sent her the song.

Tell us about working with Shirley Manson on ‘Love Letters’. You’ve known each other for a long time…

“Shirley and I have an odd thing in common. She’s from South Queensferry, Scotland, where I’ve spent time. Not many people can say that who aren’t from there. I’ve been a fan since the first Garbage album.”

The Pretenders covered ‘Little Latin Lupe Lu’, and here you return to The Righteous Brothers with The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. What does their music mean to you?

“I didn’t even know they did ‘Little Latin Lupe Lu’. I only knew the Mitch Ryder version. But I sure remembered The Righteous Brothers singing ‘You’re My Soul’. I’ve worked with Dan, and he’s one of my guitar heroes. He’s such a great producer and songwriter, and I wondered if those talents overshadow what a great singer he is. So I wanted to get his voice to highlight the fact.”

The tracklist for Chrissie Hynde’s ‘Duets Special’ is:

‘Me & Mrs Jones’ (feat. k.d. lang)
‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ (feat. Mark Lanegan)
‘Sway’ (feat. Lucinda Williams)
‘Dolphins’ (feat. Dave Gahan)
‘First Of The Gang To Die’ (feat. Cat Power)
‘Always On My Mind’ (feat. Rufus Wainwright)
‘Every Little Bit Hurts’ (feat. Carleen Anderson)
‘I’m Not In Love’ (feat. Brandon Flowers)
‘It’s Only Love’ (feat. Julian Lennon)
‘Try To Sleep’ (feat. Debbie Harry)
‘County Line’ (feat. Alan Sparhawk)
‘Love Letters’ (feat. Shirley Manson)
‘(You’re My) Soul And Inspiration’ (feat. Dan Auerbach)

Speaking previously about the origins of ‘Duets Special’, Chrissie Hynde explained that she’d “never thought” about doing something like it before. “I think the idea came about in 2023,” she said.

“I was talking to Jörn, Rufus Wainwright’s husband, on the phone. I think we were recommending novels to each other, and for some reason, I said, ‘Hey, maybe Rufus and I should do something,’ and quickly scribbled out 10 songs off the top of my head.

“So Jörn asked Rufus, who was up for it, and that’s how it started. A spontaneous and what I thought would be a fun thing.”

‘Duets Special’ follows on from Hynde’s second full-length solo album ‘Valve Bone Woe’ (2019) – a jazz-inspired covers collection – and 2021’s ‘Standing In The Doorway: Chrissie Hynde Sings Bob Dylan’.

In 2015, Brandon Flowers was joined by Hynde at a London gig for a performance of ‘Don’t Get Me Wrong’. The following year, The Black Keys’ Auerbach appeared on stage with The Pretenders on The Late Show.

This summer, Hynde attended one of Oasis’ Live ’25 reunion shows at Wembley Stadium in London earlier this month, alongside the former Smiths guitarist and his daughter Sonny, as well as Pretenders guitarist James Walbourne.

Chrissie Hynde & Pals’ ‘Duets Special’ is out tomorrow (Friday October 17) via Parlophone (pre-order/pre-save here). She is performing in the BBC Radio 2 Piano Room tonight (October 16).

Anant Ambani’s fitness trainer reveals how celebrities stay fit during gruelling film shoots: ‘They follow strict…’

Ever wondered how celebrities stay toned during hectic shoots? Anant Ambani’s trainer Vinod Channa shares the secret behind their on-screen fitness.

We often marvel at how actors look perfectly toned and fit, even with gruelling shoot schedules and long hours on set. Celebrity fitness trainer Vinod Channa, who has guided stars like Anant Ambani and Nita Ambani on their fitness journeys, breaks down the secret behind their on-screen physiques in his September 16 Instagram post. (Also read: Ranbir Kapoor’s fitness trainer shares 5 reasons why many people fail to lose weight: ‘The key is to keep challenging…’ )

Vinod Channa emphasizes that celebrity fitness is a year-round commitment involving disciplined diets and workouts.

How do celebrities stay fit during film shoots

“Celebrities stay fit during film shoots because they work really hard, consistently, over the years,” Channa explains. “This isn’t something that happens in a day. They work out throughout the year, which is why they look so fit for a specific movie.”

He adds, “On top of that, depending on the movie’s requirements, they start planning months in advance, sometimes 4-6 months before shooting. They follow strict diet-specific workouts to achieve the look needed for their character. And once they reach that physique, maintaining it is equally important, especially since shooting days can stretch up to 12 hours.”

What keeps them consistent during busy schedules

Channa further shares, “Whenever they get time, they make sure to work out and stick to a disciplined diet. Their meals don’t get compromised. This consistent effort allows them to match the character’s look perfectly, and that’s why the final result on screen looks flawless and earns appreciation from audiences.”

In short, celebrity fitness is not about last-minute efforts, it’s about dedication, consistency, and planning months ahead. According to Vinod, it’s this combination of hard work, discipline, and smart preparation that keeps stars looking camera-ready, no matter how demanding the shoot schedule.

Cult fit founder shares 4 exercises to do for strong knees if your parents are struggling to walk now

As our parents or grandparents grow older, their ability to perform certain daily activities also depletes. For women, their bones grow weak, especially if they don’t work out regularly or do strength training. According to Mayo Clinic, loss of estrogen in women due to menopause and lower testosterone levels in men increases bone loss and can also lead to the development of osteoporosis.

Training your knees isn’t just for the gym—it’s for everyday life. This is how you move better, without pain holding you back.

Diving straight into strength training may not be a plausible route for many. In a September 22 Instagram video, Rishabh Telang, co-founder of Cult Fit, shared 4 exercises that he makes his 63-year-old mother do to build stronger knees. So, even if you are going to the gym or just starting out, these exercises could help you move better.

4 exercises for stronger knees

Sharing the videos featuring the 4 exercises, the Cult Fit founder wrote, “You shouldn’t have to think twice before taking the stairs, kneeling on the floor, or walking longer distances. Training your knees isn’t just for the gym—it’s for everyday life. This is how you move better, without pain holding you back.”

1. Hip thrusts

In this assisted form of hip thrust exercise, lie down on the floor near an elevated surface like a sofa, and keep your heels on the edge of the sofa. Now, with your palms resting on the floor, lift your hips off the floor and thrust them up in the air. Repeat this motion to do the exercise.

2. Leg raises

This is another form of assisted exercise, where you can ask your parents to sit on the edge of the sofa or a chair, with a straight spine, thighs parallel to the ground, and feet firmly placed. Now, raise your legs in the air, parallel to the ground, and repeat the motion for each leg.

3. Calf raises

To do this exercise, stand in front of an armchair, and using it for balance, do the calf raises by lifting your heel off the ground and balancing your body on your toes. You feel the pull in your calves. Keep your spine straight for the routine.

4. Feet raises

Sit on a chair or a sofa. Now, while keeping your spine straight, raise your toes off the ground with your heels placed on the floor.
