Dame Julie Andrews finally wins Emmy award for Bridgerton role

The 89-year-old actress was previously nominated for the Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance award in 2021, 2022 and 2023 and now in 2025 she has emerged victorious at last, beating off strong competition from Hank Azaria for The Simpsons, Maya Rudolph in Big Mouth, Alan Tudyk for Andor, Jeffrey Wright in What If…? and Invincible’s Steven Yeun.

2025 Creative Arts Emmys presenter Craig Robinson accepted the award on behalf of Andrews, who did not attend the ceremony.

Bridgerton premiered on Netflix in 2020 and Andrews previously revealed she had never met any of her co-stars.

She told the Today show: “You know I’ve never met the company in person. Of course, I see them on the show sometimes. But I do all my recording far, far away from them.

“I think it’s gorgeous looking, and they’re all wonderful in it and they’re lovely people to work with. [Producer] Shonda Rhimes and the whole gang down, they’re terrific. And I’m thrilled that they asked me.”

Meanwhile, the top nominees were among the top winners on the first night of the 77th Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday (06.09.25), which was devoted to scripted programming and animation.

The Studio, starring Seth Rogen (who cocreated it with longtime partner Evan Goldberg) won nine awards, followed by Colin Farrell’s The Penguin with eight Emmys and psychological drama Severance, with six.

Severance had led the way with 27 nominations, The Penguin had 24 and The Studio tied for third with The White Lotus at 23.

The Studio’s awards included guest actor in a comedy series for Bryan Cranston, contemporary costumes for a series; production design for a narrative show (half-hour); casting for a comedy series; picture editing for a single camera comedy series; sound editing for a comedy or drama series (half-hour); sound mixing for a comedy or drama series (half-hour) and animation; music supervision; and cinematography for a series (half-hour).

Mohanlal Finally Opens Up About AMMA Resignation After One Year

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

On August 2024, superstar Mohanlal had willingly resigned from the post of the president at the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), days after the release of the Hema Committee report. In fact, the whole association was dissolved amid backlash and criticisms. Many claimed that it did not do much to protect artistes against harassment and sexual abuse. While Mohanlal had quietly resigned back then, he recently spoke about the aftermath.

In an interview with Asianet News, Mohanlal shared that he did not resign due to the criticisms faced by the association. He noted that he had a different reason to step down. Mohanlal further added that he resigned when he felt was the right time for him. He said, “I faced a lot of criticism. Suddenly, we became enemies to many people. But the resignations were not because of the criticism. I resigned when I felt it was time to put a full stop.”

Moreover, the actor stated that he hopes individuals who parted ways with AMMA due to differences would consider returning. The actor further added that he does not see his exit from the organisation as a “defeat.” He opened up about leaving as a “natural transition” which helped Shwetha Menon take over as president. Mohanlal also lauded the change of a woman taking up the most important role in the organisation.

When did Mohanlal serve as the president of AMMA?

For those unaware, the superstar served as the president for two consecutive terms. He was in the leadership position from 2018 to 2021 and 2021 to 2024. Interestingly, he was supposed to continue till 2027 but resigned midway. He also did not compete in the elections that happened in 2025.

What was the Hema Committee report?

Justice Hema Committee, formed in 2017, had released a detailed report on August 19, 2024. The report detailed horrifying tales of discrimination and sexual harassment of women in the Malayalam film industry. The committee comprised retired High Court Justice K. Hema, former actor Sharada and retired IAS officer K.B. Valsala Kumari.

The committee was officially formed after they came across a petition from the Kerala-based Women in Cinema Collective’s (WCC). The committee delved into issues of sexual harassment and gender inequality in the Malayalam film industry. Having said that, the WCC was also formed after a Malayalam actress spoke about being abducted and sexually assaulted in Kochi. The investigation for the case, conducted by Kerala Police, focused on Malayalam actor Dileep.

The Hema Committee report also noted that sexual favours have long been perceived as a means of gaining access to the Malayalam film industry. Moreover, the harassment experiences weren’t limited to actors but also affected women who worked as makeup artists, dancers, technicians and support members.

After the release of the Hema Committee report, many actresses from the industry opened up about the sexual abuse that they faced.

Jennifer Aniston Finally Reveals Why She's Never Attended the Met Gala

Jennifer Aniston Finally Reveals Why She’s Never Attended the Met Gala

by jummy84 September 2, 2025
written by jummy84

Jennifer Aniston has always been the quintessential L.A. girl. From her signature flip flops and tank tops to her sun-kissed bronde hair, she epitomizes what we think of as California style, as eponymous to L.A. as the Dodgers, palm trees, and green juice.

But Aniston has also spent plenty of time on the East Coast New York as well. Whether she’s filming The Morning Show on location or dining out with friends or a rumored new relationship, she’s obviously comfortable navigating New York City.

So, why then, has Jennifer Aniston—one of the biggest TV and movie stars on the planet—never attended fashion’s biggest night? She’s been a staple at the Emmys, the Oscars, the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards, but never the Met Gala, the exclusive annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

“Yes, I have [been invited],” Aniston confirms to Glamour for our September global cover story on the women of The Morning Show. The Emmy-winning actor would no doubt stun in whatever look she’d choose, but says that the thought of posing on and walking those iconic stairs “overwhelms me.”

“I’m a jeans and flip-flop and tank top kind of girl,” Aniston continues. “I love dressing up too, but, for me, it’s a mental game of…put on a fancy dress, makeup, get your hair all purdy and go sit in a big room with your peers. [And yes,] everyone’s there to celebrate each other and have some fun, but I get nervous.”

It’s understandable. And Aniston’s not alone. Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson, Angelina Jolie, Annette Bening, and many more A-listers (including, interestedly enough, Brad Pitt) have never attended the annual gala chaired, of course, by Condé Nast Chief Content Office and Vogue Global Editorial Director, Anna Wintour.

“I even get a little anxious about public speaking, especially over the years of having your words twisted and taken out of context,” Aniston says. “So, I find myself almost hall monitoring myself in a weird way.”

Even so, Aniston says she still appreciates the red carpet, even if her Morning Show character, Alex Levy, has a certain disdain for it. “I don’t feel [the same way Alex does].” Still, “some people find it like a sport where they build you up and then they love to tear you down. What’s the reason why people do it? Who knows? But I just try as best I can [to tune it out] because it doesn’t do you any good.”

Still, that’s not to say Aniston won’t ever walk those famous stairs. But her decision not to attend is one of the many reasons we love the former Friends star; she stays true to herself, flip flops and all.

Liz and SOPHIE Collaboration “Sunscreen” Finally Released: Watch the Video

by jummy84 August 24, 2025
written by jummy84

In 2018, SOPHIE and Liz reunited to make a follow-up to their 2015 collaboration “When I Rule the World” at SOPHIE’s Nichols Canyon home studio. That song, “Sunscreen,” did not immediately see the light of day, though it leaked on streaming platforms and occasionally popped up in DJ sets. Now, Liz is back, and she is releasing the finished song to mark her return. Below, watch the song’s video, shot on the Greek island of Mykonos. James Orlando directed it, and co-designer Renata Raksha drew from an idea conceptualized with SOPHIE.

SOPHIE’s brother, Benny Long, and vocal engineer Suzy Shinn worked with Liz to complete the track. The song is also getting a vinyl release. “Sunscreen” is the latest in a string of posthumous SOPHIE releases, the latest being the self-titled album released last year.

Liz wrote on social media, “After all the years of rips, leaks, lore, and speculation, SUNSCREEN is finally here. SOPHIE always wanted me to put this song out, and I’m so grateful to Benny and Emily Long for being the loving and classy individuals they are, and for trusting me with the vision for this release.”

She added, “And to SOPHIE… your brilliance, your spirit, your friendship—I carry all of it with me. Thank you for believing in me. You continue to shape me and so many others; your impact is eternal. SOPHIE FOREVER.”

Earl Sweatshirt Is Finally Ready to Live Laugh Love: Review

Earl Sweatshirt Is Finally Ready to Live Laugh Love: Review

by jummy84 August 23, 2025
written by jummy84

It can be difficult to tell when Earl Sweatshirt is happy on wax. In his defense, he’s been through a lot since EARL, his breakthrough mixtape in 2010. By 2015’s I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside, he had established himself as a stark, brooding lyricist who was consumed by the life brewing within him and around him. With each subsequent release, Earl has moved closer and closer to understanding, only to be yanked back by the circumstances of humanity. He’s lost his father, and become a father and partner; found his creative community and shed dead weight. On Live Laugh Love, titled after the overused suburban wall décor phrase, Earl finds contentment and comfort in his growth and faith — unironically.

With his latest album, Earl sounds like a man made anew. Through warbling, funk-fueled production provided by Queens rapper/producer Theravada on the album opener, “gsw vs sac,” you can hear the smile in Earl’s voice as he processes his place in life. “Every day, I lace my cleats and give Him praise, get your head in the game,” he raps, firmly establishing his beliefs. Earl cedes the last minute of the song to a character who stands in as a source of comical inspiration. “You wanna chase instead of find,” the voice says humorously. “What you running from, yourself?” Together, Earl and his accompanying guest encourage us to find our purpose in our own time and not a moment sooner.

Earl has long been on a path of self-discovery, and he’s using Live Laugh Love to catch us up on his hard-earned progress. On Theravada’s “INFATUATION,” pumped full of soul samples and chiming keys, Earl raps about the lessons he’s been taught by life itself. “Flirts with danger, we hastily learn how to dance,” he spits, before sharing that he’s “gleaning what I can from what I have amassed.” At the end, Earl recalls the less-fortunate circumstances he’s come from, before snapping back to his blessed present: “The low hum of hunger had my stomach singing a song of sadness, wishing that it wasn’t flat/ Tonight, we dining where?” He has the gravitas and willingness to revisit the depths of his most formative moments, while still appreciating and reveling in his current position.

Any writing about Earl you come across will inevitably involve the word “dense.” From his lyrical delivery to the production he prefers to rap over, Earl’s approach is concentrated in its compacted intensity. He stretches and pulls syllables like a taffy machine, inventing his very own relationship with words over production that scatters your brain at max volume. In particular, the weighty beats crafted by Detroit DJ/producer Black Noi$e give Earl copious opportunities to parse through his own streams of thought. “Live” opens with echoing drums and tinging cymbal, sounding considerably brighter than the songs that preceded it. You can almost envision Earl gripping a mic as he spits closely to it, an intimate display of heightened concentration. The beat switches exactly halfway through to a reverberating video game-inspired soundscape, as Earl borderline mumbles under his breath: “My stronghold faith what’s keeping me whole.” The clash of sound over voice can be difficult to understand at times (a recurring issue throughout Live Laugh Love), but it gets at the heart of Earl’s present focus.

Earl has famously overcome boarding school and the trappings of teen fame, but depression has been lingering in his peripheral for years. The anthemic “Static,” also produced by Black Noi$e, feels triumphant compared to the rest of the album, and even the majority of Earl’s discography — he sounds vocally clear and inspired to talk his shit. Somehow, he manages to string together a film reference that doubles as a call-back to a historical prison performance, and tops that with a hat-tip to both Prince and Future: “Let it Sing Sing on you like a Voice from East Harlem/ Easy target, three-ball, game blouses/ Let the purple rain douse ’em/ I thought it was a drought?” Earl is having more fun with spinning bars out of his complex experiences, be they traumatic or joyful. Even his simplistic flexes ring out louder than the hardest lyrics from mainstream rappers.

Are We Finally About To Get Better Sunscreen?

by jummy84 August 23, 2025
written by jummy84

The last time a new sunscreen active ingredient — you know, the good stuff that protects skin from the sun’s aging and cancer-causing rays — was approved in the United States, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were dating, “Believe” by Cher was top of the charts, and The Sopranos had just debuted on HBO.

Before you cry a river, some good news: In June, four representatives from Congress introduced the bipartisan bill, the SAFE Sunscreen Standards Act, to overhaul regulations many feel are more dated than the above pop culture references. If passed, the act would introduce more modern evaluation methods, including real-world studies and alternatives to animal testing, putting us better in line with current global standards.

“This is a big deal,” says Carl D’Ruiz, the head of science advocacy and business development at DSM-Firmenich in North America, which manufactures sunscreen ingredients, among other beauty products. “The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been under fire from Congress for not having been able to add a new [sunscreen] ingredient since 1999. At least it gives you a fighting chance to bring innovation that hasn’t been introduced to the US that’s available in other countries.”

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been under fire from Congress for not having been able to add a new [sunscreen] ingredient since 1999.

Carl D’Ruiz, head of science advocacy and business development at DSM-Firmenich

Why do US sunscreens fall behind?

While in Asia and Europe, sunscreens are considered cosmetic, here they are classified as drugs and regulated by the FDA, which means any new filter needs to undergo a full approval process to be considered GRASE or generally recognized as safe and effective.

That means an incredible amount of testing. From human clinical studies (these are called maximum usage trials, basically putting swathes of sunscreen on to mimic worst-case exposure; something no other country uses to test sunscreen) to animal testing (the latter, which most brands don’t want to do, for good reason). The process can take years and cost millions of dollars.

Complicating the matter? It’s up to the sunscreen brands to pay for this testing themselves. D’Ruiz’s company is close to getting the ingredient PARSOL Shield (aka bemotrizinol) across the finish line of FDA approvals. He estimates they’ve spent $9 million since 2018 alone. To be clear, PARSOL Shield is a veteran chemical filter (chemical filters absorb UV rays and convert them to heat) that’s been in use in formulas around the world since 2001.

In an extra special gut punch, once approved, D’Ruiz’s company only gets exclusivity on using PARSOL Shield for 18 months before other brands can tap it for their formulas. “That’s one of many issues the industry has with this testing,” says Becky Kamowitz, executive director of the Skin Cancer Foundation. “If one manufacturer goes ahead and pays for that testing, why would another manufacturer also pay for it? It would fall to the larger companies to do this, and the larger companies don’t want to bear that burden to have smaller companies profit off of their testing.”

The Skin Cancer Foundation has drafted a letter of support for the SAFE Sunscreen Standards Act for people to sign. The act is currently in limbo: It has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, but hasn’t been ratified and will go back in front of them in September. However, a companion bill in the Senate was passed unanimously on July 30.

Before you clean out your current sunscreen supply, the approved filters in the US are not less effective than others on the market.

When will we get better sunscreen?

But time is ticking. Michael Werner, senior policy advisor to the Public Access to Sunscreens (PASS) Coalition, says, “September is a critical month for the SAFE Sunscreen Act because it is tied to the reauthorization of the Over-the-Counter Monograph User Fee Act (OMUFA), which is a must-pass bill as the program will expire Sept 30. The Senate and House versions of the bill will need to be reconciled and passed in both chambers to become law.”

It’s high stakes — even everybody’s favorite Congressperson, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has weighed in on the issue. Back in 2023, she went live on Instagram with Dieux Skincare founder Charlotte Palermino discussing the issue. “US sunscreens are far behind the rest of the world,” adding, “We deserve better here in the US”

Especially because it’s the consumer who suffers. While about 30 to 40 filters are approved globally, only nine are commonly used in the US (two of which have been banned in Hawaii to protect the reefs). The FDA isn’t necessarily on board with all of these. In 2019, it asked for more data on 12 of the 16 filters currently approved for use in the US. Insert face-melting emoji here.

Are approved sunscreen filters less effective than others?

Before you clean out your current sunscreen supply, the approved filters in the US are not less effective than others on the market. “There’s a misconception that European Union-approved filters are automatically safer or that US filters are outdated,” says Dr. Caroline Robinson, Chicago-based dermatologist and founder of TONE. What we are lacking is newer filters, which Dr. Robinson says may improve cosmetic elegance and encourage more consistent use.

Outside of the SAFE Sunscreen Act, she hopes to see more inclusivity in future testing. “It’s important to recognize that sunscreen use among African Americans has historically been low, and only recently has it become more common,” she says. “Future decisions should be informed by research that includes all phototypes and addresses visible-light protection, not just UV, one of the many reasons I advocate for diversity in clinical trials.”

Think of the formulas you see all over TikTok, while we’re stuck with thicker, goopier formulas that leave white casts. Beauty of Joseon, a fave of AOC and all of Gen Z, even had to reformulate its viral sunscreen with filters approved in the US, to sell here.

“We’ve always said the best sunscreen is the one you are most likely to use,” agrees Kamowitz. “If Americans have more options for products, that would make them more likely to use these products. We know that these ingredients that are not available here might lead to a much better experience for people, if these products blend better, if they work better with their skin tone, that sort of thing.”

Especially in an era where skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US, instances of melanoma have doubled over the past 30 years. Gen Z on TikTok are shouting out the benefits of tanning beds, and some beauty brands are claiming that the sun isn’t poison; anything we can do to make people slather on their ‘screen is crucial.

In general, our experts agree that the best practice when you’re heading to your next outdoor park hang is daily use of a broad-spectrum SPF 30+, reapply every two hours outdoors, and combine with hats, shade, and protective clothing.

Britney Spears playlist optional.
