  • Strain the mixture to remove aromatics.
  • Return the infused liquid to the pot, add agar-agar, and whisk continuously over medium heat until dissolved (2–3 minutes).
  • Fold in the chopped tender coconut flesh.
  • Pour into serving bowls and refrigerate for 2–3 hours until set.

B. Blueberry compote

  • Combine blueberries, brown sugar, and sherry vinegar in a saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add citrus zest and lemon juice.
  • Cook gently until the berries break down and the mixture thickens to a jammy consistency (8–10 minutes).
  • Cool completely before using.

C. Salted coconut crunch

  • Preheat oven to 160°C.
  • In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Mix in toasted coconut.

  • Shake gently until the cookie separates and turns golden brown.
  • Drain on paper towels and cool completely.

To assemble

  • Top the set coconut pudding with a generous spoon of blueberry compote.

Ingredients:

A. For the cake

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp cornstarch
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 cup plant milk (almond, soy, or oat)
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • ½ cup neutral oil (such as sunflower or canola)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

B. For the soak (“three milks”)

  • ½ cup vegan condensed milk (coconut-based or oat)
  • ½ cup full-fat coconut milk or coconut cream
  • ½ cup plant milk of choice
  • 1 tsp rose water (optional but recommended)

C. For the topping

  • 1 cup vegan whipped cream
  • 2 Tbsp crushed pistachios
  • 2 Tbsp edible rose petals

Method:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8×8-inch baking pan.
  • Make vegan buttermilk: Combine the plant milk and vinegar; let sit for 5 minutes to curdle slightly.
  • Prepare the batter: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add oil, vanilla, and the buttermilk mixture; stir gently until smooth.
  • Bake: Pour into the prepared pan and bake 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes.
  • Soak: In a separate bowl, whisk together the three milks and rose water. Poke small holes all over the cake with a fork, then slowly pour the milk mixture evenly over the top. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours, or overnight, to allow the cake to absorb the liquid.
  • Finish and serve: Spread the whipped cream over the chilled cake, then sprinkle with pistachios and rose petals. Serve cold.
  • Chef’s tips: Use food-grade rose petals and pure rose water for the best aroma. A little goes a long way. To intensify the nutty flavour, add 1–2 tablespoons of finely ground pistachios to the batter. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; the texture improves as it rests.

Brighten up your home this Diwali with the help of 4 smart lighting hacks. From exercising balance to layering, know all the tricks here.

Diwali 2025: As homeowners enthusiastically prepare their houses for the festival of light, from dusting every shelf to repainting walls, one aspect cohesively and irrevocably reflects the festive cheer: lighting. How you choose to illuminate your home refreshes the mood. It is only fitting that the lighting check boxes are dutifully ticked off for the festival of light.

When it comes to Diwali, lighting often begins and ends with fairy lights and diyas, but there’s so much more to explore. Creating a well-rounded, well-lit space requires strategy while also retaining the warmth and intimacy of festive fervour at the very heart of the lighting arrangement.

To achieve a cohesive lighting strategy, Anupriyam Arora, Design Lead, MagickHome, shared with HT Lifestyle 4 key hacks for this Diwali season. According to her, lighting transcends the purpose of utility as it is also about emotion. Emphasising the value of proper light arrangement on Diwali, she said, “If walls are the bones of a home, then lighting is its heartbeat.” This also highlights that festive decor’s revamp isn’t only confined to painting walls, as your illumination techniques also require your diligent attention.

Here are the 4 lighting hacks Anupriyam suggested:

1. Layer lights

Layer lighting in your room to create an effect of 'layers.'(Picture credit: Image generated by Gemini)
Layer lighting in your room to create an effect of ‘layers.'(Picture credit: Image generated by Gemini)
  • Start with layers. A common mistake is relying on a single overhead light.
  • Instead, think in terms of ambient, task, and accent lighting.
  • Ambient lighting creates the overall glow, task lighting helps you focus in areas like the kitchen or study, and accent lighting adds drama by spotlighting art, textures, or architectural details.
  • Together, these layers make a space versatile and dynamic.

2. Avoid overlighting

Don't go overboard; find a balance. Avoid overlighting!(Picture credit: Image generated by Gemini)

  • A critical point that is often overlooked is overlighting.
  • Too many fixtures or overly bright lights can create harsh shadows, glare, and visual clutter, which can actually make a space feel smaller or uncomfortable.
  • Effective lighting is always about balance – enough to illuminate and highlight, but carefully controlled to maintain warmth, depth, and mood.

3. Add statement lights

  • A statement chandelier can be the jewel of a dining room, while pendant lights bring intimacy to a breakfast nook.
  • Wall sconces or floor lamps can add warmth and depth without major renovation.

4. Amplify natural light wherever possible

Leverage natural light with the help of mirror placements. (Picture credit: Image generated by Gemini)

  • Natural light is the most underrated design element.
  • Play with sheer curtains, mirrors, and reflective surfaces to amplify daylight – it instantly makes rooms feel bigger and more welcoming.

When it comes to unique and stylish festive wear, the one-of-a-kind actor, Vijay Varma, has become a go-to source of inspiration. He consistently breaks away from traditional silhouettes, offering a fresh, modern take on Indian festive fashion. He often mixes and matches conventional Indian garments with unexpected cuts, fabrics, and a touch of avant-garde flair. If you’re looking to upgrade your wardrobe for the upcoming celebrations, here are five festive looks from Vijay Varma that you’ll want to emulate.

5 Vijay Varma Looks To Steal This Festive Season

The Regal Brocade Look

In this look, Vijay Varma wears a stunning gold and black brocade jacket with a striking floral and leaf pattern. The jacket features a clean, sharp silhouette and is paired with flowy black trousers. Underneath, he sports a sheer black button-down shirt, which adds a subtle, modern edge to the traditional opulence of the brocade. His hair is neatly styled, and he accessorises with a single ring.

The Minimalist Monochrome Look

Vijay Varma poses in a monochromatic off-white ensemble. He is wearing a textured, raw-finish sherwani jacket over a matching tunic. The sherwani has a structured, open-front design, and the tunic has a simple, mandarin-collar neckline. The look is completed with matching off-white trousers and a pair of white sneakers with a green and yellow accent, giving the outfit a comfortable and modern feel.

He pairs it with a light-toned tunic and wide-legged black trousers. The outfit is accessorised with a watch and a statement ring on his finger, and he completes the look with black dress shoes.

The All-Black Power Look

This is a powerful, all-black ensemble. Varma wears a long, open-front black jacket with intricate embroidered details on the collar and cuffs. The jacket is layered over a black tunic with an asymmetrical hemline. He pairs this with black, loose-fitting, pleated trousers that create a dramatic, layered silhouette. The look is finished with black loafers adorned with gold embellishments.

The Modern Pathani Ensemble

Vijay Varma stands in front of a stone staircase, showcasing a dramatic, all-black outfit. He wears a long, open-front black jacket with a high, closed collar. The jacket is layered over a black tunic that falls to his knees. The most distinctive part of the look is the wide-legged, pleated black trousers that gather at the ankles, creating a voluminous silhouette. He completes the look with polished black dress shoes and sunglasses.

Feeling lonely this Navratri? Therapist shares 6 tips to navigate through loneliness this festive season

The festive season is a time of joy, celebration, and the warmth of togetherness. However, it may not be a great time for everyone, especially those living far away or cut off from family and friends. Many people experience disappointment and despair during the holidays due to family conflicts, the death of a loved one, and other pressures, which exacerbates the all too prevalent feeling of seasonal loneliness – but rest assured, you are not alone.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Mansi Poddar – a trauma-informed psychotherapist and mental health expert with over 15 years of experience – stresses that the holiday season can be an exceptionally difficult time for some people, which is a completely normal human response to loneliness. She outlines six therapist-approved tips to help cope with festive loneliness, making the season a little easier for those who find it challenging to navigate through the holidays.

1. Acknowledge your emotions

According to Dr Poddar, “Festive loneliness is more prevalent than most people realise. Recognise your feelings rather than ignoring them. By giving your emotions a name, you can lessen their intensity and keep them from turning into self-blame.”

2. Practice mindfulness

According to the therapist, some research indicates that practising mindfulness might help reduce feelings of loneliness. Even if you are only using mindfulness apps and practicing it only for a period of time every day, it makes a difference.

3. Keep a simple routine

Dr Poddar recommends making a to-do list of things you can do, be it daily activities or something special, over the holidays – it helps keep your schedule as well as your mind organised.

She elaborates, “Give yourself permission to let go of everything you are unable to do over the holidays due to emotional, mental, or physical limitations. Try making a menu of things you can do, broken down into high and low-energy activities, if you have trouble sticking to a schedule. It’s crucial that you determine what activities are truly engaging rather than merely something you ‘should’ do.”

4. Treat yourself with compassion

“Imagine a loved one approaching you to share their feelings of loneliness over the holidays. You would most likely listen to their worries, treat them with the utmost kindness, and tell them that you care about and love them,” says Dr Poddar, adding the question, “So why not do the same to yourself?”

She suggests treating yourself the way you would treat someone you love – be gentle with yourself, practice kindness and compassion, believe in yourself, and care for yourself just as you would for a friend.

5. Practice gratitude

“An excellent place to start is with a gratitude diary. Writing down all of your blessings, from the more philosophical to the more mundane, could be a good place to start,” suggests the mental health expert.

Practising gratitude and counting your blessings can help you see the good in people, point out the things you are blessed with, which helps you appreciate what you have – directing your attention to life’s good aspects and eventually, aiding your recovery.

6. Engage with communities

The festive season is a time of celebration and togetherness, so it is only natural to feel lonely. Dr Poddar emphasises that it is a common human sensation and should not be viewed as a personal weakness. “Even if the holidays don’t look like traditional festivities, you may make them a time of healing and purpose by establishing deliberate connections, rituals, and self-care routines,” she highlights.

“The impacts of social isolation can be countered even by conversing with complete strangers. Attend local gatherings like concerts, sporting events, or open-mic nights where you may meet others who share your interests. Become a member of a book club. Make use of social media to broaden your network and get in touch with former acquaintances. Engage in forums and social media groups related to your interests.”

Centaur External at Cheltenham Racecourse

Cheltenham Racecourse, part of Jockey Club Venues, is set to showcase the flexibility of its flagship events space this December with Santa – The Visit, a brand-new Christmas production directed by Strictly Come Dancing star Craig Revel Horwood.

Running from 19th to 24th December in The Centaur, the racecourse’s 2,250-capacity auditorium, the theatrical experience will transform the venue into a fully themed festive environment. Bringing together music, interactive storytelling, festive characters and high-spec production design, the show will welcome thousands of visitors across six days in the lead up to Christmas.

The event showcases The Centaur’s ability to host not only major conferences, exhibitions and corporate events, but also large-scale theatrical productions requiring complex staging, technical production and audience engagement.

Guy Lavender, Chief Executive, Cheltenham Racecourse said: “Cheltenham Racecourse has welcomed some very distinguished, VIP guests over many years but perhaps this is our most unusual and exciting yet. We’re not entirely sure what to expect, let alone where we’ll park his sleigh, but we’re honoured and thrilled to host his visit and help play our part in saving Christmas for the people of Cheltenham and beyond.”

Craig Revel Horwood, said: “Darlings, I am beyond thrilled to be teaming up with the one and only Santa Claus this December at Cheltenham Racecourse! Christmas is in a spot of bother – but never fear, because with a little theatrical flair, some Strictly-style sparkle, and a sprinkle of festive magic, we are going to save it together.

“‘Santa – The Visit’ is not just another meet-and-greet, oh no. It’s an immersive, musical, magical adventure where families will step into Santa’s world and become part of the mission to rescue Christmas spirit itself. Expect music, characters, laughter, and more than a few surprises along the way. I can’t wait to welcome you all, big kids and little ones alike to join Santa and his elite elves, on this extraordinary festive journey. It will be nothing short of… fab-u-lous!”

With more than 10,000sqm of flexible indoor space, breakout areas and award-winning hospitality, Cheltenham Racecourse has become one of the South West’s premier destinations for conferences, corporate events and exhibitions. The venue’s ability to host Santa himself, alongside a West End-level immersive production – further illustrates its capacity to deliver standout delegate and visitor experiences.

Tickets for Santa – The Visit start from £18 per person and are available to buy from Friday 26th September here: www.santathevisit.com.
