Luxury brands embark on high-stakes reboots

New designers at Chanel, Dior, Gucci aim to revive consumer interest

*

High-end industry struggles amid prolonged economic slump

By Mimosa Spencer

PARIS, Sept 8 – Chanel and Dior are among a record number of top fashion brands that will introduce new designers’ collections on the catwalk in the coming weeks, aiming to reignite shoppers’ interest in a bruised luxury industry that lost one of its greats, Giorgio Armani, last week.

The stakes are high for the $400 billion sector which kicks off a month of fashion shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris on September 10. Brands have struggled to revamp sales since the post-pandemic boom wound down two years ago.

After averaging annual growth of 10% for nearly a decade, the sector slumped last year, triggering a flurry of changes at the leadership and creative level.

“The industry is facing troubled waters,” said Jonathan Siboni, CEO of consultancy Luxurynsight. The Chinese economy has remained hobbled by a property crisis while U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war is weighing on U.S. consumer confidence and threatening margins at European high-end brands. The slump has prompted sweeping change across the sector, with new CEOs arriving at companies including Gucci-owner Kering and Italian brand Valentino, as well as high-level management reshuffles at the world’s biggest luxury conglomerate LVMH.

A new generation of designers is taking command at three of fashion’s biggest global brands, Chanel, Dior and Gucci. The death of Italian fashion icon Giorgio Armani on September 4 is raising questions on the future of the Italian label.

The industry-wide designer shakeup has also reached smaller labels: LVMH’s Celine, Loewe and Givenchy; Kering brands Bottega Veneta and Alexander McQueen; Prada’s recently acquired Versace; Puig labels Dries Van Noten and Jean Paul Gaultier and OTB’s Maison Margiela.

The pressure on the new crop of creative directors is especially high this season. The task traditionally is to introduce new styles that bring excitement to historic labels without diluting brand image – but here they also need to spark enough interest to win back inflation-weary shoppers who are no longer interested in splashing out on handbags. “Fundamentally, this season will indicate whether or not luxury brands will be able to reconnect with the consumers,” said Christian Kurtzke, CEO of Together Group, a global collective of luxury-focused creative consultancies, immersive technology, marketing and production studios. Catwalk presentations are no longer just industrial showcases, but also serve to generate excitement around a brand.

“What’s next probably will be more a revolution than an evolution,” said Siboni.

LOSING TOUCH

Brands like Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton relied heavily on hefty price hikes to drive profit during the post-pandemic boom. But as prices rose, shoppers began to turn away. The sector lost 50 million customers last year, according to consultancy Bain, as economic pressures and price fatigue dampened appetite for designer clothing and handbags.

To get noticed, fashion brands need to “set themselves apart, be more and more spectacular, while at the same time, given budget cuts and the economic crisis, also have to be more ‘quiet'”, said Stephane Galienni, associate of creative agency Balistik Art.

The challenge is particularly acute at Gucci, which missed out on the post-pandemic boom and has struggled since the departure of designer Alessandro Michele in 2024. The designer’s baroque styles, which had fallen out of favor with shoppers, were replaced by a minimalist approach steered by successor Sabato de Sarno, but those, too, failed to reignite sales.

It is now up to Demna – who created buzz at smaller Kering label Balenciaga and is known for applying high-end tailoring techniques to make oversize suits, streetwear and couture – to revive the storied Italian brand, which accounts for the bulk of the group’s sales and profits. Initial designs from Demna will be shown at a presentation in Milan on September 23, but the designer’s first fashion show for the brand will be in March.

Chanel, which reported a rare decline in sales last year, recruited Matthieu Blazy to refresh the French fashion house’s tweed looks that for decades were designed by Karl Lagerfeld, who was succeeded by longtime collaborator Virginie Viard after his death in 2019. Blazy, who is credited with climbing sales at Kering’s Bottega Veneta, makes his debut with an evening show on October 6 at Lagerfeld’s favored venue, the Grand Palais in Paris.

LVMH’s second largest label, Dior, which has lagged its stablemate Louis Vuitton, brought on Jonathan Anderson to replace both menswear designer Kim Jones and womenswear designer Maria Grazia Chiuri. Anderson, who showed menswear in July, debuts womenswear on October 1.

A number of labels have shown looks from their new designers on celebrities on the red carpet of the Venice Film Festival, with Versace’s new designer Dario Vitale dressing Julia Roberts, for example, in a slender dark gown that swept the floor.

But showing a sneak peek ahead of the important debuts in Paris and Milan – without a runway event’s special setting, music and lineup of dozens of looks – carries risks, said brand advisor Fabio Becheri.

“When you just throw one out in the midst of the red carpet you lose the magic touch to it – it’s super risky,” said Becheri, noting this exposed brands to negative comments on social media.

“That’s the worst way to start a new creative direction.”

Iconic fashion designer Giorgio Armani dead at 91 – National

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Giorgio Armani, a stalwart of Milan ready-to-wear who revolutionized fashion with unstructured looks, died Thursday at the age of 91, his fashion house confirmed.

Armani died at home, the fashion house said. The fashion designer failed to appear at his runway shows in June as he was recovering from an undisclosed illness. He was planning a major event to celebrate 50 years of his signature Giorgio Armani fashion house during Milan Fashion Week this month.

Starting with an unlined jacket, a simple pair of pants and an urban palette, Armani put Italian ready-to-wear style on the international fashion map in the late 1970s, creating an instantly recognizable relaxed silhouette that has propelled the fashion house for half a century.

From the executive office to the Hollywood screen, Armani dressed the rich and famous in classic tailored styles, fashioned in super-soft fabrics and muted tones. His handsome black tie outfits and glittering evening gowns often stole the show on award season red carpets.

At the time of his death, Armani had put together an empire worth over $10 billion, which along with clothing included accessories, home furnishings, perfumes, cosmetics, books, flowers and even chocolates, ranking him in the world’s top 200 billionaires, according to Forbes.

The designer also owned several bars, clubs, restaurants and his own basketball team EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, better known as Olympia Milano. Armani opened more than than 20 restaurants from Milan to Tokyo since 1998, and two hotels, one in Dubai in 2009 and another in Milan, in 2010.

Armani himself was the foundation of his style

Armani style began with Giorgio Armani himself, from the penetrating blue eyes framed in a permanent tan and early-age shock of silver hair, to the trademark jeans and t-shirt work clothes and the minimalist decoration of his private homes.

Armani’s fashion vision was that of easygoing elegance where attention to detail made the difference.

“I design for real people. There is no virtue whatsoever in creating clothes and accessories that are not practical,” he liked to say when asked to identify his clientele.

In conversation, the designer’s disarming smile and exquisitely mild manners belied the tough businessman underneath, who was able to turn creative talent into a fashion empire worth over $10 billion. Never a merger nor a sale, Re Giorgio (King George) as the Italians call him, was always his own boss.

Born July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, a small town south of Milan, Armani dreamed of becoming a doctor before a part-time job as a window decorator in a Milan department store opened his eyes to the world of fashion.

In 1975, Armani and his partner Sergio Galeotti sold their Volkswagen for $10,000 to start up their own menswear ready-to-wear label. Womenswear followed a year later.

The symbol of his new style was the liningless sports jacket, which was launched in the late 1970s and became an instant success from Hollywood to Wall Street. The designer paired the jacket with a simple t-shirt, an item of clothing he termed “the alpha and omega of the fashion alphabet.”

The Armani suit soon became a must in the closet of the well-heeled man. And for women, the introduction of the pantsuit in the executive workroom was all but revolutionary. Dubbed the “power suit” with its shoulder-padded jacket and man-tailored trousers, it became the trademark of the rising class of businesswomen in the 1980s.

Over the years Armani would soften the look with delicate detailing, luxurious fabrics and brighter shades for his basic beige and gray palette. His insistence on pants and jackets led some critics to label his fashion “androgynous.”

Armani hits Hollywood

The 1980 film classic American Gigolo launched both Armani and actor Richard Gere on their Hollywood careers. Dressed in Armani, Gere became America’s new favourite heart throb, and “Geeorgeeo” as they called him, the glam set’s most popular designer.

The Hollywood connection earned him wardrobe film credits in over 200 films, and in 2003 a place on Rodeo Drive’s “Walk of Fame.”

Oscar night always sparkled, with smart suiting for the men, and glittering gowns for the ladies. The 2009 best actor winner Sean Penn picked up his statue in a black-on-black Armani outfit, while best actress nominee Anne Hathaway walked the red carpet in a shimmering white strapless evening gown from Armani’s latest Prive couture collection.

Other longtime devotees included Jodie Foster, George Clooney, Sofia Loren and Brad Pitt. David and Victoria Beckham were the “face” of his 2009 underwear ad campaign.

So significant was the impact of Armani style, not only on how people dressed but how they approached fashion, that in 2000 New York’s Guggenheim museum presented a retrospective of Armani’s first 25 years in fashion.

“I love things that age well, things that don’t date and become living examples of the absolute best,” Armani said of his efforts.

Armani has gone well beyond fashion

Today, the Armani empire has an army of more than 9,000 employees, with women comprising half of the executive suite, along with seven industrial hubs and over 600 stores worldwide, according to figures released in 2023. Along with clothes and accessories, the company produces perfumes, cosmetics and home furnishings, as well as selling its own candy, flowers and even books. The designer opened his fifth multi-brand store on New York’s fashionable Fifth Avenue in February 2009.

In the realm of fashion hobbies, Armani owned several bars, restaurants and clubs, as well as the basketball team. Recreation time was spent in getaways in Broni in the countryside near Milan, the isle of Pantelleria off Sicily and St. Tropez on the French Riviera. Each home bore the trademark of Armani design: bare walls, important pieces, few knickknacks.

Like many of his colleagues, Armani tried to give back some of the fame and fortune he amassed during the heyday of the “moda Milanese” which put Italian ready-to-wear at the center of the world’s fashion map at the turn of the millennium. Personally involved in several charity organizations devoted to children and a staunch supporter of the battle against AIDS, in 2002 Armani was named a U.N. goodwill ambassador for refugees.

Galeotti died in 1985. Armani had no children but was very close to his niece Roberta, daughter of his late brother Sergio. She abandoned a budding film career to become his director of public relations, and often represented her uncle, who wasn’t much of a party-goer, at social events. In later years she was a key go-between with the celebrity world.

In 2006, she orchestrated the top-billed wedding of actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in a medieval castle outside Rome, while Uncle Giorgio designed the attire for both bride and groom.

Armani had indicated that as he considered succession he was looking toward his longtime head of menswear Leo Dell’Orco and his niece Silvana Armani, who fills the same role for womenswear.

Italian Fashion Designer Giorgio Armani Passes Away At 91| Bollywood Bubble

by jummy84 September 4, 2025
written by jummy84

The fashion world has bid farewell to one of its brightest luminaries, Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian designer whose name became synonymous with modern elegance and who built an empire rooted in his vision, has passed away at the age of 91 in Milan. Born in Piacenza on July 11, 1934, Armani’s legacy endures through the Armani Group, which announced that its founder departed peacefully, leaving an indelible mark on design and entrepreneurship.

Giorgio Armani Passed Away At 91

More than just a designer, Armani was a philosopher-king of fashion. In 1975, he sold his Volkswagen Beetle to fund his dreams — and within seven years, he graced the cover of Time magazine. His empire grew from tailored suits and red-carpet gowns to hotels, homewares, and chocolates, cementing his status as Italy’s most successful designer and one of its most astute businessmen. By 2019, his company was generating 2.1 billion euros, and his personal wealth was estimated at a staggering $11 billion.

Giorgio Connection With India

India held a special place in Armani’s creative soul. During a visit in 1994, he fell in love with the country’s rich culture, heritage, and vibrancy. Inspired by this journey, he crafted collections that captured India’s spirit, showcasing them with his signature elegance on Milan’s runways. Armani once reflected on his drive: “Perfectionism, and the need to always have new goals and achieve them, is a state of mind that brings profound meaning to life.”

Final Walk On The Runaway

Armani’s farewell was as iconic as his career — during Milan Fashion Week’s F/W 2025-26 womenswear show titled Roots, he was escorted by two shimmering models. At 90, he was still meticulously overseeing every detail backstage, a testament to his unwavering perfectionism. The runway, designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, became the stage for his poignant last bow.

Funeral arrangements are scheduled at Teatro Armani in Milan from September 6 to 7, open to the public from 9 am to 6 pm.

Indian fashion fraternity mourns the death of Italian designer Giorgio Armani

by jummy84 September 4, 2025
written by jummy84

The Italian designer died at 91 due to age-related illness.

Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, popularly known as King Giorgio has died at 91. His demise has left a void in fashion and he was single-handedly responsible for rewriting the rules of fashion. The designer was the archetype of Italian style and built a multibillion-dollar fashion empire. His fashion house released a statement soon after his death. “Indefatigable to the end, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections and the many ongoing and future projects,” the statement said.

The iconic designer died at his house surrounded by his loved ones. He gave a miss to the June 2025 Milan Fashion Week for the first time, and was planning a major event to celebrate his brand’s 50 years during Milan Fashion Week this month.

Indian fashion designers and personalities poured in their condolences for the icon.

Sunil Sethi, FDCI Chairman

This is such a big loss for all of us. His name has been synonymous with fashion. I had the fortune of working with him for two years for the launch of Armani Casa. I was his guest at the opening of Armani Casa in Milan, where I met him personally. I was in awe of his personality. Meeting him was the biggest highlight of my life. My first meeting with him was in the year 1994 at Oberoi Hotel and had a brief interaction in the hotel’s elevator.

Rahul Mishra, Designer

Giorgio Armani’s passing marks the end of an era. He wasn’t only a master of elegance and restraint—he was the architect of how a designer could build a global brand. Armani created a business model that became a case study for generations: from Armani cafe, Armani Casa to multiple divisions under his name, he showed that creativity and structure can coexist at the highest level. For independent designers like myself, and even for conglomerates, his legacy is both wisdom and roadmap. Personally, for my study having lived in Milan and witnessed his vision up close, I can say his influence shaped my own path. His ideas, his craftsmanship, and his relentless vision will remain safe in history—and he will be deeply missed by us all…

Ritu Beri, Designer

The world has lost a true icon with the passing of Giorgio Armani. His vision redefined elegance and simplicity, leaving an indelible mark on global fashion. For me, Armani was the epitome of timeless style and creative genius, an inspiration whose legacy will live on forever.

Suneet Varma, Designer

Giorgio Armani, the maestro of timeless elegance, redefined modern fashion with his quiet confidence and pure lines. He gave the world a new order of style—where tailoring was softened, glamour became effortless, and jeans stood as a symbol of democracy in dress. Armani dressed presidents, film stars, and dreamers alike, yet his true genius was in making sophistication accessible. With his passing, we lose not just a designer, but a visionary who shaped how the world dresses forever.

Nachiket Barve, Designer

Giorgio Armani is an absolute legend whose contribution to fashion is eternal. Bringing ease and fluidity to menswear, sophisticated androgyny to women’s fashion and being one of the first designers to build and nurture an independent fashion empire, his legacy is large and inspiring to generations of designers. I continue to be inspired by his focus and timeless elegance as he built his signature over decades.

Rina Dhaka, Designer

As a young designer my only first big dream was to wear Armani head-to -toe. He exemplified quiet class in clothing, no logos sreaming what you are wearing. With time ofcourse newer brands came, but Monsieur Armani at 91 could still be seen at the end of the show walking tall though frail with age. Students in India in fashion in 2025 must read of his legacy his craft to understand my perspective.

Alia Bhatt opens up about her favourite fashion moments, from iconic tributes to Rekha to glamorous red carpets, and how she brings creativity to every look.

Alia Bhatt is an absolute fashionista who has made her mark on the global stage, whether it’s Cannes, Gucci, or the Met Gala, she has proved time and again that the actor remains at the top of the fashion charts. In her September 4 interview with Grazia, she opened up about what draws her to certain events, the people she collaborates with, and how she approaches fashion as more than just a look. (Also read: Alia Bhatt’s fitness trainer says ‘sitting is the new smoking’; shares easy exercises to stay active )

In her latest interview, Alia Bhatt discusses her trust in her creative team and the meaningful connections she forms at global events.

What makes Alia’s red carpet moments so special

Reflecting on her experiences at prestigious events like Gucci shows, the Cannes red carpet, and The Met, Alia explains that these occasions are about far more than fashion. “I truly enjoy every moment of these events,” she says.

Alia adds, “There’s a beautiful kind of chaos, but it’s filled with incredible energy. What makes it even more special is meeting talented women from across the globe, learning about the work they’re doing, and sharing a little bit of yourself in return. It creates a sense of connection that makes the world feel smaller, and that feeling is really wonderful.” For her, these gatherings are not just glamorous outings, they are spaces to connect, exchange ideas, and celebrate creativity in all its forms.

How she recreated Rekha’s iconic look

Alia’s approach to fashion is thoughtful, guided by collaborations with people who value storytelling and attention to detail. Whether working with Rhea Kapoor, Anaita Shroff Adajania, or Sabya Mukherjee, she gravitates toward projects that go beyond the surface. “We take pleasure in the little details, whether people get it or not is okay,” she adds.

Her most recent homage to the legendary Rekha highlights this philosophy perfectly. Trusting her team completely, she recreated the iconic look on the day of the screening, embracing both spontaneity and creativity. “I trust my team and people like Rhea blindly; we align on thought which is why we work together,” she says.

Ranveer Singh once again proved why he’s Bollywood’s most charming star. The actor was recently seen at the airport, with ease converting the terminal into a style runway with his signature swag and striking presence.

Wearing black athleisure wear, Ranveer looked like the epitome of comfort and coolness in equal proportions, finishing the look with a shaven face and neatly styled short hair a welcome deviation from his regular bold style statements. He greeted the paparazzi with his trademark charm, flashing a bright smile and a thumbs-up before swinging into his expensive vehicle, making it a talking point among fans.

Ranveer Singh to Head Don 3, May Share Screen with Shah Rukh Khan & Amitabh Bachchan

In the professional sphere, Ranveer Singh is preparing for one of his most hyped roles taking over Shah Rukh Khan in Don 3. The decision created quite a hullabaloo on the internet, with people split down the middle about the drastic casting call. But interest in the movie has picked up even more with rumors that both Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan two iconic dons might feature in the sequel too.

As per India Today reports, both superstars have been approached for their appearance in the film. Although no confirmation has been officially done, fans are already excited at the possibility of a three-generation Don crossover on the big screen.

Kiara Advani Back to Don 3 After Pregnancy Break

To add to the thrill, actress Kiara Advani, who was reportedly dropped from the project owing to her pregnancy, is now back on board. She is to replace Priyanka Chopra as the female lead in the film. A source close to the production team revealed to Subhash K Jha,

“Yes, there’s been a delay but it couldn’t be helped. Kiara got pregnant, and Farhan Akhtar got busy with 120 Bahadur, where he plays Major Shaitan Singh.”

The shooting for Don 3 is now likely to start in January next year, with director Farhan Akhtar set to pick up from where he left after his current commitments are over.

With back-to-back blockbusters, Ranveer Singh’s star continues to shine brightly both at the airport and on the big screen.

Does your makeup secretly cause skin pigmentation? A dermatologist explains | Fashion Trends

Makeup has been around for years. From ancient kohl eyeliners to modern-day high-definition foundations, people have always used cosmetics to enhance their appearance and express themselves. Be it a bold red lipstick to showcase your bold and charismatic look or a subtle nude shade for a girl-next-door look, makeup has become an integral part of our lifestyle.

Skin pigmentation and its correlation with makeup(Pexels)

However, one skin concern that often arises is if makeup can cause skin pigmentation as well. With so many cosmetic and ingredients used in them, it’s worth exploring how makeup interacts with our skin and whether it truly contributes to pigmentation problems.

Understanding skin pigmentation and their causes

Pigmentation occurs when the skin produces excess melanin. This can be triggered by sun exposure, hormonal imbalances, post-inflammatory changes from acne or injury, certain medications, and even genetic predisposition. Among these, UV damage remains the most common cause in India, given our climate, dermatologist Dr Rinky Kapoor, Director and Co-Founder, The Esthetic Clinics, tells HT Lifestyle in an interview.

Can makeup trigger pigmentation?

As per the expert, wearing foundation, concealer, or lipstick and other makeup products don’t directly cause pigmentation. But certain practices and ingredients can worsen existing conditions. She further adds that using low-quality or expired products, heavy foundations that clog pores, or formulations with harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances can irritate the skin and trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

In addition to this, wearing makeup for long hours without proper cleansing also increases risk.

What ingredients to look for in makeup products to avoid skin pigmentation?

“Ingredients like fragrance, mineral oils, and certain preservatives may aggravate sensitive skin, while products without SPF leave skin vulnerable to sun damage, the leading cause of pigmentation,” says Dr Kapoor. She recommends choosing dermatologically tested, non-comedogenic products, removing makeup thoroughly before bed, and pairing makeup with a good sunscreen to reduce pigmentation risk.

Are there any natural remedies or lifestyle changes to reduce skin pigmentation?

“Lifestyle modifications such as regular sunscreen use, maintaining a diet rich in antioxidants, staying hydrated, and managing stress can help reduce further pigmentation,” suggests the expert. She also advises the use of natural remedies like aloe vera, green tea extracts, or turmeric to support skin health. However, here’s a word of caution from Dr Kapoor: “These should be seen as complementary, not primary solutions.”

What are the safest and most effective solutions to prevent or manage skin pigmentation?

The most reliable solutions are dermatologist-recommended treatments such as topical agents containing vitamin C, kojic acid, retinoids, or azelaic acid,” says Dr Kapoor. Depending on severity, procedures like chemical peels, laser therapy, and microdermabrasion deliver excellent results when supervised by experts. Prevention through consistent sun protection remains the foundation of managing pigmentation.

Safe makeup practices to prevent pigmentation

Pigmentation caused or aggravated by makeup is largely preventable with mindful habits. Here are some dermatologist-recommended practices:

Invest in quality products: Always choose trusted, dermatologically tested brands. Look for labels like “non-comedogenic” and “hypoallergenic” if you have sensitive skin.

Check ingredients: Avoid products with high concentrations of alcohol, artificial fragrances, or parabens if your skin reacts easily.

Never skip sunscreen: Since UV rays are the leading cause of pigmentation, applying sunscreen beneath makeup is crucial, even on cloudy days.

Remove makeup thoroughly: Double cleansing (using an oil-based cleanser followed by a gentle face wash) ensures all residue, dirt, and pollutants are removed before bedtime.

Follow hygiene rules: Clean your makeup brushes and sponges regularly. Avoid sharing makeup to minimize bacterial transfer.

Perform patch tests: Before using a new product, test it on a small patch of skin to avoid allergic reactions.

When to see a dermatologist

If you notice persistent dark patches, uneven skin tone, or irritation after using makeup, consult a dermatologist. They can help identify whether the pigmentation is due to product sensitivity, sun exposure, or another underlying condition. Treatments like chemical peels, laser therapy, or topical creams containing vitamin C, niacinamide, or hydroquinone may be prescribed.

In a nutshell, makeup does not directly cause pigmentation, but the real culprits are low-quality products, poor skincare practices, prolonged sun exposure, and neglecting proper cleansing.

By choosing safe products, maintaining proper skin hygiene, and protecting your skin from UV damage, you can enjoy makeup without worrying about pigmentation issues. Remember, healthy skin should always be the foundation of beautiful makeup.
