Fall 2025 Shopping Guide, According to Ilana Torbiner

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

As a fashion editor, I draw inspiration and product recommendations from others in the industry, but not just anyone. Over the years, I’ve curated a tight list of people I follow on Instagram, TikTok, and Substack—those with distinct personal style and a “less is more” approach to fashion. They aren’t swayed by micro-trends or rushing to buy the same Zara jacket everyone else has, and they don’t overhaul their wardrobes every season. Instead, they focus on building a strong foundation and a thoughtful capsule wardrobe anchored in timeless pieces with the occasional fun, fresh addition to keep things current and personal. One individual who excels in this area is Chicago-based influencer and personal stylist Ilana Torbiner.

No matter the season, Torbiner’s goal is clear: staying true to her personal style. “My aesthetic goal is to stay true to my personal style and incorporate all the clothes in my closet from past years while adding in some newer arrivals to keep things feeling fresh,” she tells Who What Wear.

Her signature look? “Laid-back with a ’90s influence,” she shares. “My mom worked at Barneys in the ’90s, so her wardrobe from that time has played a strong role in shaping my style.” Comfort is also a priority for Torbiner. “I tend to gravitate toward quality fabrics, classic shapes, and simple styles, but at the same time, I don’t aspire to have a super-minimal style,” she notes.

For fall 2025, that balance of comfort, timelessness, and a touch of trendiness will guide her. When it comes to the smartest method for shopping for the new season without feeling overwhelmed, she advises readers to “fill the gaps in their wardrobe first and build the foundation, adding fun pieces in from there.” She shares that everyone should keep their eyes on the new collections from designers such as Kallmeyer, Aflalo, and Attersee.

If it’s not clear by now, Torbiner has a knack for finding items that look expensive and are wearable. To explore the specific pieces Torbiner is currently excited about for fall, I asked her to curate an exclusive edit for the Who What Wear audience—you’re welcome. Because she plans to fully embrace the Western fashion trend this fall (think denim, suede, fringe, boots, leather, plaid), you can expect pieces that capture that aesthetic. Keep scrolling.

6 Outdated Fall Jacket Trends of 2025

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

I know, I know—summer’s not over yet, but as an outerwear-obsessed fashion person, I can’t wait any longer to talk about which jacket trends will dominate fall and which ones won’t. I made my predictions back in March when the fall/winter 2025 collections debuted in New York, Milan, London, Paris, and other cities. Now that fall is actually around the corner, it’s easier to see which styles will truly stick.

Based on fashion trends seen in Copenhagen during its recent fashion week, where people wore their new-season jackets; the way city dwellers in New York are layering lightweight toppers over black activewear and jeans prematurely; and everyone on Instagram and TikTok showing off their fall purchases, I’ve narrowed down the top six fall jacket trends you should buy and the six you should skip. To give you a sneak peek, funnel-neck leather bomber jackets will be replacing leather moto jackets. Keep scrolling to learn everything you need to know about chic outerwear for fall 2025.

Buy: Leather Funnel-Neck Bomber Jackets

When it comes to leather jackets for fall, there are many styles to covet, but at the top of this list is the funnel-neck leather bomber jacket. This silhouette is sleek with just the right amount of slouch. It can edge up a pair of tailored trousers and take something as simple as jeans, loafers, and a white tee to the next level.

Buy: Fringe Jackets

Ilana wears a black leather fringe jacket, white tee, and blue jeans.

Fringe jackets are quickly becoming the go-to for anyone wanting to look cool and trendy with minimal effort. I’m seeing everything from boxy leather styles to oversize suede options. Some of my favorites have been vintage, but if you can’t get your hands on one, I suggest checking out what Madewell and Re/Done have to offer. When styling them, consider drawing inspiration from fashion people in NYC who are pairing them with straight-leg jeans and flip-flops rather than sticking to bootcut jeans and cowboy boots, which will make the jacket look costumey.

Buy: Technical Jackets

Annabel wears an ivory technical jacket, black pants, black sandals, and a black shoulder bag.

In August 2024, senior fashion editor Eliza Huber reported on the sporty-jacket trend after noticing it in The Row’s, Tory Burch’s, and Proenza Schouler’s spring/summer 2024 collections. Now, over a year later, the outerwear trend is everywhere—on people in London, Paris, and L.A. and in new collections from Toteme, Massimo Dutti, Zara, and Uniqlo. For those unfamiliar, these sporty jackets are often made with technical fabrics and feature an anorak or zip-up silhouette. Instead of being styled with casual pieces, they’re being dressed up with silk pants, tailored trousers, and maxi skirts for an unexpected but chic look.

Previously, if you told me ponchos would make a comeback in 2025, I wouldn’t have believed you or said I was all for it. However, after seeing the sleeveless topper in Proenza Schouler’s F/W 25 collection and recently on Bella Hadid, I’ve definitely warmed up to the idea. In fact, I’m fully on board and need a poncho in my closet ASAP. Its soft, unstructured shape allows it to drape effortlessly over the body, adding a touch of elegance. I’m looking to brands like COS and J.Crew for casual styles and The Row and Scanlan Theodore for dressier, more artisanal options.

Buy: Faux-Fur Jackets

Sylvie wears a brown fur coat, white button-down, denim skirt, sheer tights, and slingbacks.

Fur outerwear was all over the fall/winter 2025 runways. I wasn’t 100% certain which collections used real fur (Gucci, Versace, Stella McCartney, and Michael Kors have committed to ethical alternatives), but here at Who What Wear, we only support faux fur. It’s 2025, and with so many sustainable options available, there’s no need to wear real fur. Faux-fur jackets provide all the cozy glamour without the guilt. They are just as warm, luxurious, and often more affordable than genuine fur. What could be better?

Buy: Long Plaid Jackets

Marilyn wears a plaid jacket, white jeans, white flip-flops, and a brown bag.

I know plaid jackets for fall aren’t groundbreaking, but what’s notable is how they’ve shifted from rebellious to refined. In the early 2000s, plaid outerwear was often associated with the alt girl fashion aesthetic. Now, the print, especially on jackets, has matured and been reimagined with cleaner lines and a more refined color palette, such as tonal neutrals and deep jewel tones. Most importantly, there has been a shift toward elevated fabrics. Instead of plush knit materials, the fabric choices for plaid outerwear now range from cotton to polyester blends, and long trench and car coat styles are taking the lead.

Phlur’s Cherry Stem Scent Is My #1 Fall Fragrance—Here’s Why

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Phlur is one of my all-time favorite fragrance brands. I love its minimalist aesthetic. I love its emphasis on storytelling through scent. Most of all, I love the products themselves—the diverse collection of perfumes and body mists. While I could discuss Phlur’s fragrance portfolio for hours (actually, I already have), the brand’s newest perfume has officially snatched my attention away from all others. Meet Phlur’s Cherry Stem Eau de Parfum, a sultry scent that just became my number one fall fragrance.

I’ll be the first to admit that cherry scents can be contentious. Honestly, I’ve steered clear of them in the past, as they tend to be too sweet, syrupy, or artificial for my taste. If it gives Red 40 rather than fresh, ripe fruit, I’m automatically out.

However, when done well, cherry scents are surprisingly sophisticated. That’s the case with Cherry Stem. Inspired by flirtatious meet-cutes in dimly lit bars, this upscale cherry fragrance is so sultry and alluring that I can’t stop wearing it. I’ll even go so far as to say it’s my all-time favorite cherry fragrance. Yes, it’s really that good. Ahead, learn more about this perfect-for-fall fragrance and get exclusive insight from Phlur’s creative director, Chriselle Lim.

Best picks for you

Fragrance family: Fruity woods

Fragrance notes: Black cherry, orange brandy, red freesia, sugared jasmine, plum nectar, ebony woods, caramel, soft leather accord

“Cherry Stem was inspired by flirtation,” Lim says. “The crossing of legs, the lingering eye contact across the bar… It’s mysterious, seductive, but still full of energy. A lot of cherry scents can lean juvenile or syrupy, but Cherry Stem perfectly captures what I wanted a cherry fragrance to be: fruity but more complex, sexy, and mature.”

Unlike other cherry perfumes, this one doesn’t scream cherry and leave it at that. Black cherry, while still the shining star, is enveloped in other highly sophisticated notes. There are florals (freesia and jasmine), gourmands (brandy and caramel), and grounding notes (wood and leather). The effect is elevated, layered, and complex—a perfume that will leave people wanting more.
