Can Melatonin Cause Heart Failure? What We Know About the Supplement – Hollywood Life

New research has raised concerns about the long-term use of melatonin supplements, which are widely available for purchase in the United States. With countless Americans having taken the supplement at least once in their lives, many are wondering if they are at risk of heart failure. So, could taking melatonin actually lead to heart failure?

Below, we break down the new study about melatonin and the risk, according to the data released by the American Heart Association as part of its Scientific Sessions.

Is Melatonin a Hormone?

Yes, melatonin is a hormone produced in the human body that helps the sleep cycle.

What Do Melatonin Supplements do?

Melatonin supplements help a person’s sleep-and-wake cycle. Those living with insomnia, for example, can take melatonin on a short-term basis to help their sleep pattern.

Does Melatonin Cause Heart Failure?

Technically, yes, but it depends on how much melatonin you take. Researchers revealed in November 2025 that long-term supplement users were more than three times as likely to suffer from heart failure and twice as likely to die from any cause. Additionally, they found that more than 100,000 adults living with chronic insomnia and taking melatonin for more than one year had a 90 percent higher chance of experiencing heart failure over the next five years.

However, the American Heart Association’s news release pointed out that the discovery “cannot prove a cause-and-effect relationship” even though it raised safety concerns about the long-term usage of the supplement.

The preliminary research will be presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2025 this month, the AHA revealed in a news release.

Is it Still Safe to Take Melatonin?

Yes, short-term usage of melatonin is still safe, but the new research still raises concerns for those who have taken melatonin over the counter for more than one year. Marie-Pierre St-Onge, Ph.D., C.C.S.H., FAHA, and chair of the writing group for the American Heart Association’s 2025 scientific statement, said she was “surprised that physicians would prescribe melatonin for insomnia and have patients use it for more than 365 days, since melatonin, at least in the U.S., is not indicated for the treatment of insomnia.”

“In the U.S., melatonin can be taken as an over-the-counter supplement, and people should be aware that it should not be taken chronically without a proper indication,” St-Onge said, per the AHA’s news release.

Showrunner Says the Series Reveals How Prejudice Fuels Evil and Systematic Failure

Peacock’s Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy tells the chilling true story of a Chicago contractor who hid behind the mask of a friendly neighbor and community volunteer while preying on vulnerable young men and boys. By day, John Wayne Gacy (Michael Chernus) shook hands with officials, attended fundraisers, and performed as “Pogo the Clown.” By night, he murdered (at least) 33 victims between 1972 and 1978, burying most beneath his home.

Based on the 2021 docuseries John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise, the series recounts Gacy’s brutality as it exposes the systemic failures of authorities at the time, when victims from working-class families, immigrant backgrounds, and the gay community were too often dismissed by law enforcement. Devil in Disguise reveals how prejudice and neglect allowed a killer to thrive while the cries of the vulnerable went unheard.

In the series, detectives are often seen victim-blaming and dismissing crucial evidence, revealing a culture of prejudice that allowed Gacy’s crimes to continue unchecked. For example, in Episode 5, one of Gacy’s victims is called a “whore” by the investigating detective Joe Kozenczak (James Badge Dale) because his lack of financial stability forced him to stay with Gacy in his house of horrors. In Episode 8, a victim named Jeffrey (Augustus Prew) is blamed for his own attack due to his alternative lifestyle.

Although it may seem like a story rooted in a bygone era, showrunner, writer, and executive producer Patrick Macmanus sees it as a cautionary tale about what happens when those meant to protect and serve look the other way — particularly when it came to the cries of marginalized groups of the times, such as women and LGBTQ+ individuals, the most vulnerable members of society.

“It is honestly sort of the main driving theme of the show,” said Macmanus. “Number one, the shows I’ve worked with before have all been driven by some semblance of systemic failure. It’s something that I am just interested in exploring. This one was absolutely the systemic failure of the police to be able to find and stop Gacy, specifically the Chicago Police Department.”

“Now, part of it was because of communications issues at the time that they were facing, that’s absolutely true,” clarified Macmanus. “But a large part of it was the fact that they were blinded and clouded by prejudice. That is a fact.”

“I want to go on the record as saying that we are in no way, shape or form, demonizing police, because if you look on the flip side of the coin, you’re look you’re watching a whole other story of police who are in that pit every single day for months, trying to unearth and uncover and name every victim that was in John Wayne Gacy’s house. So we are lauding the police as much as we are critiquing and analyzing the failures of the system,” continued Macmanus.

“On the other hand, I believe that this is as relevant to the story as it’s ever been. I think that anybody who thinks that this is a story that time has passed, that we’re exploring some other time in which people were prejudiced and allowed these things to happen, is not paying attention to the world that we currently live in.”

“The world that we currently live in is, at present, driven oftentimes by prejudice,” said Macmanus. “And that prejudice is ultimately a driver of the degradation of our societies, the degradation of our citizens, no matter where they are in the world, and ultimately a driver of violence in our world. And that is fueled by more than anything, by social media.”

“And so I would say that actually, it is more dangerous now than it’s ever been — definitely in my lifetime,” Macmanus concluded.

Cardiologist reveals 1 daily habit that’s putting ‘young, healthy people in their 20s and 30s suddenly in heart failure’

In a September 6 Instagram post, Dr Dmitry Yaranov asked, “Do you think energy drinks are harmless? Or have you ever felt your heart race after one?” The cardiologist, who is known on social media as ‘Heart Transplant Doc,’ titled his post ‘The one daily habit that’s putting young hearts into failure.’ Also read | Cardiologist explains 10 signs of heart disease you ignore but should not: Irregular heartbeat, swollen feet, jaw pain

Cardiologist warns about ‘energy drink heart’

Energy drink consumption has been linked to serious heart issues in young, healthy individuals. Dr Yaranov’s observation of ‘energy drink heart’ cases highlights the potential risks associated with excessive energy drink consumption.

He said, “The ‘energy drink heart’ I keep seeing in my clinic. I’m seeing this more and more — young, healthy people in their 20s and 30s suddenly in heart failure. No smoking, no family history. The common thread? 3–4 energy drinks a day.”

Energy drinks can trigger abnormal rhythms

Dr Yaranov explained that energy drinks can increase blood pressure, trigger abnormal heart rhythms, and weaken heart muscles over time. High levels of caffeine and other stimulants can push the heart into overdrive, leading to potentially life-threatening conditions.

He said, “High caffeine + stimulants push your heart into overdrive. They can trigger abnormal rhythms, raise your blood pressure, and — over time — weaken your heart muscle. Your heart isn’t designed to run at ‘max’ all day, every day.”

Dr Yaranov added it’s crucial for people to be aware of the potential dangers of excessive energy drink consumption, and said: “And here’s the scary part — many of these patients thought they were fine… right up until they weren’t.”

Energy drinks can spike heart rate, increase BP

What are the cons of consuming energy drinks? In a June 27, 2025 interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Sanjeeva Kumar Gupta, consultant, department of cardiology, CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, had said, “Packed with high levels of caffeine and sugar, they (energy drinks) can spike heart rate, increase blood pressure and trigger anxiety or sleep disturbances. Over time, frequent consumption can strain your heart and elevate the risk of arrhythmias or other cardiac problems, even in healthy individuals.”

He had added, “The mental boost is temporary, but the physiological stress can be lasting. It’s important to read labels, stay informed, and choose healthier hydration options like water or natural juices to truly support both heart and mind health.”
