Diane Lane On Punk Legacy Of ‘The Fabulous Stains’

Nearly 45 years later, Diane Lane is proud of the punk legacy that has come from one of her pre-breakout roles.

In an interview with Deadline, the 3x Golden Globe nominee recently reflected on her Lou Adler-directed 1982 cult classic Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains, which is largely credited for influencing the riot grrrl movement of the ’90s.

“It was so wild,” she said of filming the movie as a teen. “It was airing not too long ago on TCM, and I was very vindicated to see that that film had the legs that it deserves to have, and it was wonderful to have been appreciated by people who went on in their music careers and were emboldened by our story.”

Lane continued, “It was February of 1980 when we filmed that. So, just put that in your pipe and smoke it. I mean, it was very real to the times just coming out of the 70s. So, punk was already there and getting only more so. But as a point in history, it’s lovely to say I was a part of it in whatever little way that I could be as a 15-year old girl in the film industry.”

In Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains, Lane starred as frustrated teen Corinne Burns, who forms the band, The Stains, with her sister Tracy (Marin Kanter) and their cousin Jessica McNeil (Laura Dern). When the punk group, The Looters, comes to town, the trio joins their tour and quickly rises to global stardom. The cast also featured the Sex Pistols’ Paul Thomas Cook and Steve Jones, as well as The Clash’s Paul Simonon.

Since garnering a cult following shortly after its release, musicians like Courtney Love, Bikini Kill’s Tobi Vail and Bratmobile’s Allison Wolfe have credited the film as an influence.

Amandaland Christmas special confirms Absolutely Fabulous reunion

The BBC has officially announced that Motherland spin-off Amandaland will be returning for a Christmas special, starring Lucy Punch, Philippa Dunne and Dame Joanna Lumley.

Lumley first revealed the news at the beginning of October during an appearance on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio UK, but the BBC has now officially confirmed that the festive special is indeed happening.

And if that isn’t fabulous enough for you, Lumley will be joined by her Absolutely Fabulous partner in crime Jennifer Saunders, who will play her on-screen sister Aunt Joan – described as “a ball of country-living, enthusiastic upper-class bluster [and] very, very different from Felicity”.

It also marks the first time the pair have been reunited on screen since their Ab Fab days.

“I am delighted to be joining the fabulous Amandaland gang for a Christmas special,” said Saunders, while writers Holly Walsh and Laurence Rickard called her “the perfect addition to the gang”.

“Playing Joanna’s on-screen sister is guaranteed to be a laugh – who doesn’t love a family reunion SoHa style?” added Saunders.

Punch went on to say that the Christmas special “is going to be an absolute cracker – it’s like totes fire, with all the festive feels, for reals. Slay bells!”

And in further exciting news, production has begun on the show’s second season, which was confirmed back in March following its strong ratings performance.

Its first episode attracted 7.4 million viewers, making it the BBC’s second-biggest new comedy launch in recent years, behind Ludwig.

Read more:

“It’s an absolute joy to be back in SoHa (South Harlesden) again,” said Walsh and Rickard.

“After six months of researching Brent Council’s fly-tipping rules, attempting Anne’s Irish accent and writing the odd bit of script, we’re so excited to get filming with our amazing cast.”

The first season followed Punch’s eponymous queen bee, who relocated to South Harlesden after her divorce – a move that brought plenty of challenges, including Amanda working in retail (the horror!) and narrowly avoiding what looked set to be another failed marriage following a whirlwind romance.

But could a new romance be on the cards with her neighbour Mal? And what else will drive Anne to the brink of a nervous breakdown?

Season 2 will arrive on the BBC in 2026.

Amandaland is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.

Andrew Lloyd Webber on Lady Gaga’s ‘Mayhem Ball’ show in London: “Absolutely fabulous”

Andrew Lloyd Webber has heavily praised Lady Gaga’s ‘Mayhem Ball’ show in London, describing it as “absolutely fabulous”.

The pop singer played a run of four shows in the O2 Arena in recent weeks as part of the tour supporting her latest album ‘Mayhem’, which was her seventh straight Number One record.

In attendance at one of the shows was musical theatre legend Webber, who shared his reaction to the show in a video on Instagram, in which he heaped praise on Gaga and saved special mention for the portion of the show in which she performs ‘Shallow’ in a rowing boat, in a nod to his production of The Phantom Of The Opera.

“I loved the Lady Gaga concert,” he said. “It was really fabulous. She really knows how to handle an audience. And it was a great evening.”

“It was so wonderful, actually, to see somebody really singing live, rather than, as we know, some artists who are really miming to a pre-recorded track. And there was nothing of that.”

“I was really, really pleased to see an opera house on stage, and even more pleased to see a boat with her in it being rowed across the big auditorium, that is O2,” he added. “It reminded me of something that I might have had a little involvement with.”

“I thought the concert was absolutely fabulous. And I think Lady Gaga is absolutely a world superstar.”

Gaga herself responded to his comments, replying to a video on TikTok: “This is. adream come true.”

NME was also at one of the London shows, writing in a glowing five star review: “Then, flames begin to flicker on top of the opera house behind her and she leaves the stage for the encore, returning make-up free, in a simple black outfit and beanie over the hair that’s been covered by countless wigs tonight. It’s a nod to the real person behind this artful masterpiece, but also another performance. Like every other that has come before it, though, it’s just perfect.”

The tour continues around Europe in the coming weeks – you can find all the dates and ticket information here.

In a four-star review of the ‘Mayhem’ album, NME wrote: “Ultimately, ‘Mayhem’ feels like a great Gaga album because it’s just so much fun. At times, it’s a bit like reconnecting with an old friend who makes sense even when they seem to be chatting nonsense. When she sings ‘river in my eyes, I’ve got a poem in my throat‘ on ‘LoveDrug’, it’s just her overblown way of saying she’s sad and tongue-tied.

“Seventeen years after she broke through with ‘Just Dance’, Lady Gaga remains pop’s foremost agent of impeccably crafted chaos.”
