Taylor Swift continues her domination of the ARIA charts this week, locking in her fourth consecutive double-header as The Life of a Showgirl and “The Fate of Ophelia” remain at No. 1 on the Albums and Singles charts, respectively.

The feat marks yet another high in a standout year for Swift, with both her re-recordings and original material continuing to perform strongly in Australia. Her latest chart-toppers have held steady across Halloween week — a fitting flex for a pop sorceress who’s made chart magic her signature move.

Meanwhile, Australian country artist James Johnston celebrates a new career high, debuting at No. 5 with his sophomore album Where You’ll Find Me, which also lands at No. 1 on the ARIA Australian Albums Chart. It follows the success of his debut Raised Like That, which peaked at No. 7 in 2023.

British pop icon Lily Allen returns to the top 10 with West End Girl, her first album in seven years. The project opens at No. 6, becoming her fifth top 10 ARIA album. Her previous efforts include 2009’s chart-topping It’s Not Me, It’s You and 2014’s Sheezus, which peaked at No. 4.

UK rapper Dave also makes a strong entrance with The Boy Who Played the Harp, debuting at No. 7. It follows his 2021 project We’re All Alone in This Together, which reached No. 5.

Melbourne’s Paul Dempsey claims the No. 8 spot with Shotgun Karaoke Vol. II, a covers record that features renditions of songs by R.E.M., Patti Smith, Cher, and more. The Something for Kate frontman also lands at No. 2 on the ARIA Vinyl Albums Chart. Dempsey has a long history of top-charting albums, both solo and with his band, including No. 1 albums The Official Fiction (2003) and Desert Lights (2006).

On the Singles Chart, Olivia Dean continues her Australian ascent. “Man I Need” holds firm at No. 2, while “So Easy (To Fall In Love)” jumps to No. 7 from No. 22. Former hit “Nice To Each Other” climbs from No. 16 to No. 12. Dean now has five tracks in the top 50 as she gears up to perform at the ARIA Awards on Nov. 19.

Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours holds the No. 1 spot on the On Replay Albums Chart, while Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” continues its reign atop the Hitseekers Singles Chart.

Henry Threadgill Extends His Compositional Daring Into Intimacy » PopMatters

by jummy84 October 9, 2025
written by jummy84

The musical art of composer Henry Threadgill has taken many forms over the course of more than half a century. When he emerged as a darting, era-spanning alto saxophonist with the trio AIR in 1971, Threadgill was already defying expectations, playing in the post-bebop “free style” of that loft jazz era, but also covering ragtime songs along the way. His bands over the years were adventurous and unusual: a sextet with two drummers, cello, and brass; the Very Very Circus with two electric guitars and two tubas; a Flute Force Four with, you guessed it, four flutes; the Make a Move band with guitar and accordion; and Zooid, his most recent band, which shapeshifts from project to project.

Along the way, it became clear that Threadgill’s bracing saxophone playing was only a small part of his art. As a composer and bandleader, he had developed a distinctive voice, refracting the lineage of jazz through his personal musical language: contrasting timbres, overlapping rhythms, and a practice of improvisation that encouraged unusual intervals and fresh melodic patterns. During recent recordings, it became clear that Threadgill’s art has expanded beyond any single band to encompass ensembles of unusual size and composition.

The new album, Listen Ship, features a particularly unique ensemble of four acoustic guitars (Brandon Ross on the soprano in addition to Bill Frisell, Miles Okazaki, and Greg Belisle-Chi), two acoustic bass guitars (Jerome Harris and Stomu Takeishi), and two pianos (Maya Keren and Rahul Carlberg). The musicians play a suite of 16 precise and sympathetically connected pieces that largely evade a sense of genre.

Let me emphasize: although Henry Threadgill began his career as a “jazz musician”, Listen Ship only fleetingly sounds like jazz. However, the guitar-centric pieces, in particular, contain the rhythmic give-and-take that is distinctive to jazz. The music, in terms of genre or category, is simply in its own space.

For the first six installments, Threadgill segregates the pianos and guitars, alternating between piano duets and guitar treatments. (For titles, the segments are “lettered”, A, B, etc, with “IJ” as a single piece.) The contrast between these first pieces acts as a prelude. The piano duets are slower and more legato, with notes and clusters ringing in gentle pastels that only occasionally ruffle your sonic feathers. For example, “E” is a set of whispered curls and chords, with low tones and cushioned chords setting up isolated spikes of high notes. Threadgill allows Keren and Carlberg moments of drama here, but most of the playing comes home to layers of gentle accompaniment.

The guitars-only pieces that start the suite are more likely to be contrapuntal and rhythmic, like “D”, with its delicate, dancing plucking. The guitars cover the spectrum from high to low, each voice in place but coming together in strands of written melody that cycle around like a wheel.

The first segment that brings all the instruments together develops Threadgill’s ideas more fully. On “G”, the guitars continue to assert a more percussive voice, but the pianos emerge gently from beneath and then match the guitars with vigor. Suddenly, then, this piece resets to allow the keyboards to play a ballad segment that reinforces their identity, which invites the guitars along, with a bass guitar trading lead improvisations with Ross’s soprano. Ultimately, the eight instruments converge in a single theme.

The second half of the program continues to mix the players and instruments more freely. The bass guitarists face off on a frankly funky duel on “M”; a single piano part underlies one jagged guitar melody on “P”; and the 40-second “Q” is a tightly-composed symphony in a flash.

The two longest segments of the suite also come in this second half of the program, and they are the highlights. The concluding piece, “R”, offers the richest harmonic landscape on the record. The opening piano solo sounds conspicuously like (almost) mainstream jazz, though with this program’s criss-crossing guitar accompaniment. Guitarists also solo, utilizing beautiful harmonic movement as the piece develops a solid background of rhythmic hits. In the final minute, Threadgill brings together a written melody that pays off everything that came before.

A particularly sumptuous performance emerges in segment “L”, marked by a lead guitar that begins with a Flamenco-tinged lyrical bravura. Pianos and guitars move beneath the lead with gentle, consonant support, lifting the piece to shivering beauty. Listeners familiar with some of the folk-inspired jazz of the 1970s may hear echoes of the band Oregon with Ralph Towner’s guitar. Still, soon enough Threadgill’s written theme distinguishes the piece as his own, with two guitars playing a unison melody as bass, piano chords, and contrasting melodies and percussive effects complete the album’s most masterful performance.

One other observation seems important. The soloists on this album typically stand out as utterly themselves regardless of the context in which you hear them play. Bill Frisell, Miles Okazaki, and Brandon Ross rarely disappear into a recording, essentially anonymous. However, it’s seldom obvious on this record who may be soloing. That may be because the settings are so gentle and careful that these huge musical personalities didn’t look to impose their singular stamps. Does this mostly quiet program invite or require a certain egolessness?

Compared to many of Henry Threadgill’s prior ensemble recordings, Listen Ship is a delicate work. Perhaps it tempts us to overlook it, but small can be bold as well as beautiful. This new composition and construction by Threadgill has a “chamber jazz” quality at times. Still, in its relative hush — no urgent saxophones, no amplified insistence or distortion — it invites the closest possible listening. Careful attention is richly rewarded by Listen Ship. You will hear some of the finest creative musicians in the world lose themselves in Henry Threadgill’s patterns and plans, the pathways he sets up that allow melodies and rhythms to wander, weave, and be discovered.

This is subtle music, only occasionally acerbic, but capable of a full range of interest. It moves across styles — yes, there is some folkiness, some hip jazz harmonies, some moments of noise or just texture — but it is best understood as a boundary-blasting form that reflects the adventure inside the head and soul of Henry Threadgill, the most congenial and inviting avant-garde artist in American music.
Listen Ship is a gentle, daring classic.

Karnataka HC extends stay order on movie ticket price cap, will it affect Kantara Chapter 1 collections? Details inside

by jummy84 October 4, 2025
written by jummy84

On Friday, the Karnataka High Court extended its stay order on the ₹200 price limit imposed on movie tickets in all multiplexes in the state. The Multiplex Association of India has moved court against the Karnataka State Film Chamber of Commerce’s decision to cap ticket prices in the state.

Kantara Chapter 1 stars Rishab Shetty in this charged-up prequel to Kantara.

The extension comes as Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1 is running to packed houses across the state. Theatre owners had hoped that not having a ticket price cap during such a blockbuster would help their businesses by increasing collections.

The Karnataka High Court order

In the case of Karnataka State Film Chamber of Commerce vs Multiplex Association of India, filed before the Principal Bench of the Karnataka High Court, the Court, on 30.09.2025, in addition to continuing the stay order issued on 23.09.2025 regarding the ₹200 limit imposed on cinema tickets, has ordered as follows.

All cash transactions shall be digitally traceable, and cash registers shall be countersigned by the manager of the multiplex daily. The court has also asked moviegoers to keep a record of their tickets and save them for potential reimbursement in the future, in case the price cap is upheld by the court at a later date.

“In case the petitioner is successful in the final judgment of this appeal/petition, all the amounts collected through electronic means (excluding applicable GST) during the pendency of this writ petition shall be refunded to the individual customers who booked the tickets through the same mode of payment used for the booking. The respondent No. 1 shall submit a refund process plan to the licensing authority within 45 days from today for approval, which shall explain the procedure for refunding the customers. After approval by the licensing authority, it shall be placed before this court for final approval,” the order read

Will the order affect Kantara Chapter 1?

Not having a price cap means multiplex owners can price tickets higher than ₹200, which is the case in most tier-1 multiplexes across Karnataka right now. Given it’s the festive season, the high ticket prices have not deterred even the family audiences from coming to the theatres. And Kantara Chapter 1 has reaped the rewards. The film registered 82% occupancy for its Kannada shows on Friday, including 95-100% for night shows in centres like Bengaluru and Hubli. This will only increase over the weekend.

By the time the court rules on the price cap in its next hearing, Kantara Chapter 1 will have completed the bulk of its run. Any refund that could be given to the viewers later would come from the theatres’ pockets.

Written and directed by Rishab Shetty, Kantara Chapter 1 earned over ₹100 crore in India in its first two days. It is poised for a long run at the box office and is likely to end up as one of the highest-grossing Indian films of the year.

Jeezy Extends TM:101 Tour With Vegas Residency, Announces New Mixtape

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Jeezy has a lot to celebrate these days. Following the conclusion of the first leg of his Thug Motivation 101 20th anniversary tour in Detroit, the beloved emcee revealed to VIBE that his new mixtape with DJ Drama is set to drop on his birthday.

“We celebrating 20 years of ‘TM: 101,’ which has been amazing. Been a milestone in my career taking an orchestra on the road, but also wanted to keep it going,” Jeezy stated. “I feel like I’m in the zone. I feel like I got my second wind in the creative space so much so that DJ Drama and I are dropping a new project on 9/28, which is my birthday.”

The project is titled Still Snowin’ and is part of Drama’s Gangsta Grillz series. The rapper described it as “one of his favorite projects ever.”

Funny enough, there was a moment in time where this project may not have even happened because of a strife between Jeezy and Drama.

“There was a real situation where we wasn’t really seeing eye-to-eye, and I think the fact that we brought it back full circle and being able to do this with so much love just speaks to our character,” Jeezy reflected. “You don’t really get a lot of friends in this s**t. You just don’t. You don’t get people that’ll stick with you. Me and Drama would probably be 25 years in because it was before I really had a major [label] release that we got down.”

He continued, “When I look back and I see him backstage, just smiling, it just makes me happy to see the crew there. To see the guys that I started with. You don’t really end with everybody you started with, but the people that understand the vision [and] the goal they’re gonna be there. He’s always been that type of person.”

With Still Snowin’, Jeezy praised the fact that their chemistry is still intact. “We still talkin’ that talk and we just on another level,” said the best-selling author.

Jeezy announces Las Vegas residency. He’s transforming the TM:101 live experience into a masquerade for Halloween and the Nutcracker for Christmas. He’s also bringing along a 101-piece orchestra, a larger ensemble than this tour.?

Later in the press conference, Jeezy announced that he would be extending his TM: 101 Live anniversary tour with a Las Vegas residency.

“I got a lot of calls about why we didn’t do the West Coast, and it was very interesting because we were already working on something,” Jeezy teased before the big reveal.

His residency will be housed at Planet Hollywood. The first part, which is masquerade-themed, will take place on October 31 and November 1. The second part will be Nutcracker-themed and occur on December 19 and 21.

When praising the upcoming residency, Jeezy quipped, “If you don’t call that Black excellence and leveling up, then I don’t know what is.”

This time, he is bringing a 101-piece orchestra, conducted by Derrick Hodge. Hodge’s COLOR OF NOIZE ensemble accompanied Jeezy during the initial tour run. The Sin City shows will also be produced by the incomparable Adam Blackstone, who was behind the Waiting To Exhale tribute set at ESSENCE Fest 2025.

Overall, the term “thug motivation” means more to Jeezy today than ever before.

“[Back then], I was just tryna get out of my circumstances, but now when I hear ‘Soul Survivor’ or ‘Trap Or Die,’ that’s me. I lived through that. I been through that,” he confessed. “It’s real life and real records. They say you have your whole life to make your first album. ‘Thug Motivation’ was an amazing album, but I can tell you 20 years later, it really resonates with me now. I am a soul survivor.”

Revisit Jeezy’s major label debut below. Presale tickets for the residency go live on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Tm101live.com. General on-sale starts on Friday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. local time.
